Hezekiah Sets Up Priests for Service

And Hezekiah set up (A)the divisions of the priests and the Levites by their divisions, each according to his service, both the priests and the Levites, (B)for burnt offerings and for peace offerings, to minister and to give thanks and to praise in the gates of the camp of Yahweh. He also appointed (C)the king’s portion of his goods for the burnt offerings, namely, for the morning and evening burnt offerings, and the burnt offerings for the sabbaths and for the new moons and for the appointed times, (D)as it is written in the law of Yahweh. Also he said to the people who lived in Jerusalem to give (E)the portion due to the priests and the Levites, that they might be strong in (F)the law of Yahweh. As soon as the word spread forth, the sons of Israel provided in abundance the first fruits of grain, new wine, oil, honey, and of all the produce of the field; and they brought in abundantly (G)the tithe of all. Now the sons of Israel and Judah who lived in the cities of Judah also brought in the tithe of oxen and sheep, and (H)the tithe of the holy gifts which were made holy to Yahweh their God, and put them in heaps. In the third month they began to [a]make the heaps, and completed them by the seventh month. Then Hezekiah and the rulers came and saw the heaps, and they blessed Yahweh and (I)His people Israel. Then Hezekiah inquired of the priests and the Levites concerning the heaps. 10 And Azariah the chief priest (J)of the house of Zadok said to [b]him, “(K)Since the contributions began to be brought into the house of Yahweh, there has been much to eat and be satisfied with and have left over, for Yahweh has blessed His people, and this great quantity is left over.”

11 Then Hezekiah ordered them to prepare (L)rooms in the house of Yahweh, and they prepared them. 12 And they faithfully brought in the contribution and the tithe and the holy things; and Conaniah the Levite was the officer over (M)them and his brother Shimei was second. 13 Now Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath, Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismachiah, Mahath, and Benaiah were overseers [c]assisting at the hand of Conaniah and Shimei his brother by the appointment of King Hezekiah, and (N)Azariah was the chief officer of the house of God. 14 And Kore the son of Imnah the Levite, the keeper of the eastern gate, was over the freewill offerings of God, to distribute the contributions for Yahweh and the most holy things. 15 Now assisting [d]by his hand were (O)Eden, Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah in (P)the cities of the priests, to distribute faithfully their portions to their brothers by divisions, whether great or small, 16 without regard to their genealogical record, to the males from [e](Q)thirty years old and upward—everyone who entered the house of Yahweh (R)for his daily obligations—for their service in their responsibilities according to their divisions; 17 as well as the priests who were recorded genealogically according to their fathers’ households, and the Levites (S)from twenty years old and upwards, by their responsibilities and their divisions. 18 The genealogical record included [f]all their little ones, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, for the whole assembly, for they set themselves apart [g]faithfully in holiness. 19 Also for the sons of Aaron the priests who were in (T)the pasture lands of their cities, or in each and every city, (U)there were men who were designated by name to distribute portions to every male among the priests and to everyone genealogically recorded among the Levites.

Offerings for Levites

Hezekiah reestablished the divisions(A) of the priests and Levites for the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, for ministry, for giving thanks, and for praise in the gates of the camp of the Lord,(B) each division corresponding to his service among the priests and Levites. The king contributed[a] from his own possessions(C) for the regular morning and evening burnt offerings, the burnt offerings of the Sabbaths, of the New Moons, and of the appointed feasts, as written in the law of the Lord.(D) He told the people who lived in Jerusalem to give a contribution(E) for the priests and Levites so that they could devote their energy to the law of the Lord. When the word spread, the Israelites gave liberally of the best of the grain, new wine, oil, honey, and of all the produce of the field, and they brought in an abundance, a tenth(F) of everything. As for the Israelites and Judahites who lived in the cities of Judah, they also brought a tenth of the cattle and sheep, and a tenth of the dedicated things that were consecrated to the Lord their God.(G) They gathered them into large piles. In the third month they began building up the piles, and they finished in the seventh month. When Hezekiah and his officials came and viewed the piles, they praised the Lord and His people Israel.

Hezekiah asked the priests and Levites about the piles. 10 Azariah, the chief priest of the household of Zadok,(H) answered him, “Since they began bringing the offering to the Lord’s temple, we eat and are satisfied and there is plenty left over because the Lord has blessed His people; this abundance is what is left over.”(I)

11 Hezekiah told them to prepare chambers(J) in the Lord’s temple, and they prepared them. 12 The offering, the tenth, and the dedicated things were brought faithfully. Conaniah the Levite was the officer in charge of them, and his brother Shimei was second.(K) 13 Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath, Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismachiah, Mahath, and Benaiah were deputies under the authority of Conaniah and his brother Shimei by appointment of King Hezekiah and of Azariah the chief official of God’s temple.

14 Kore son of Imnah the Levite, the keeper of the East Gate, was over the freewill offerings to God to distribute the contribution to the Lord and the consecrated things.(L) 15 Eden,(M) Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah in the cities of the priests(N) were to faithfully distribute it under his authority to their brothers by divisions, whether large or small. 16 In addition, they distributed it to males registered by genealogy three[b](O) years old and above; to all who would enter the Lord’s temple for their daily duty,(P) for their service in their responsibilities according to their divisions. 17 They distributed also to those recorded by genealogy of the priests by their ancestral families and the Levites 20 years old and above,(Q) by their responsibilities in their divisions; 18 to those registered by genealogy—with all their infants, wives, sons, and daughters—of the whole assembly (for they had faithfully consecrated themselves as holy); 19 and to the descendants of Aaron, the priests, in the common fields of their cities,(R) in each and every city. There were men who were registered by name(S) to distribute a portion to every male among the priests and to every Levite recorded by genealogy.
