Joash Murders Son of Jehoiada

²⁰^(A)Then the Spirit of God ^[a]covered Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest like clothing; and he stood above the people and said to them, “This is what God has said, ‘^(B)Why do you break the commandments of the Lord and do not prosper? ^(C)Because you have abandoned the Lord, He has also abandoned you.’” ²¹So ^(D)they conspired against him, and at the command of the king they stoned him ^[b]to death in the courtyard of the house of the Lord. ²²So Joash the king did not remember the kindness which Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had shown him, but he murdered his son. And as Zechariah died he said, “May ^(E)the Lord see and ^[c]avenge!”

²⁰Then the Spirit of God ^[a]came upon ^(A)Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood above the people, and said to them, “Thus says God: ^(B)‘Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord, so that you cannot prosper? ^(C)Because you have forsaken the Lord, He also has forsaken you.’ ” ²¹So they conspired against him, and at the command of the king they ^(D)stoned him with stones in the court of the house of the Lord. ²²Thus Joash the king did not remember the kindness which Jehoiada his ^[b]father had done to him, but killed his son; and as he died, he said, “The Lord look on it, and ^(E)repay!”
