People Conspire Against Zechariah

20 (A)Now the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people and said to them, “Thus says God, ‘(B)Why do you trespass against the commandments of Yahweh and do not succeed? (C)Because you have forsaken Yahweh, He has also forsaken you.’” 21 So (D)they conspired against him and at the command of the king they stoned him [a]to death in the court of the house of Yahweh. 22 Thus Joash the king did not remember the lovingkindness which his father Jehoiada had shown him, but he killed his son. And as he died he said, “May (E)Yahweh see and [b]avenge!”

20 The Spirit of God came upon[a] Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood in front of the people and said to them, “This is what God says. Why do you disobey the commandments of the Lord? You will not prosper. Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you.”

21 But they conspired against him, and by the command of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the House of the Lord.

22 Thus King Joash did not remember the kindness which Jehoiada, his mentor,[b] had shown to him. Instead, he killed Jehoiada’s son. As Zechariah was dying, he said, “The Lord will see and avenge.”
