35 Later King Jehoshaphat of Judah made an alliance with King Ahaziah of Israel, who[a] did evil. 36 They agreed[b] to make large seagoing merchant ships;[c] they built the ships in Ezion Geber. 37 Eliezer son of Dodavahu from Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, “Because[d] you made an alliance with Ahaziah, the Lord will shatter what you have made.” The ships were wrecked and unable to go to sea.[e]

21 Jehoshaphat passed away[f] and was buried with his ancestors[g] in the City of David.[h] His son Jehoram[i] replaced him as king.

Footnotes

  1. 2 Chronicles 20:35 tn Heb “he.” The pronoun has been translated as a relative pronoun for stylistic reasons.
  2. 2 Chronicles 20:36 tn Heb “he made an alliance with him.”
  3. 2 Chronicles 20:36 tn Heb “make ships to go to Tarshish.” This probably refers to large ships either made in or capable of traveling to the distant western port of Tarshish; a “Tarshish-ship” was essentially a large seagoing merchant ship.
  4. 2 Chronicles 20:37 tn Heb “when.”
  5. 2 Chronicles 20:37 tn Heb “to go to Tarshish.”
  6. 2 Chronicles 21:1 tn Heb “lay down with his fathers.”
  7. 2 Chronicles 21:1 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 10, 12, 19).
  8. 2 Chronicles 21:1 sn The phrase the City of David refers here to the fortress of Zion in Jerusalem, not to Bethlehem. See 2 Sam 5:7.
  9. 2 Chronicles 21:1 tn The parallel account in 2 Kgs 8:20-24 has the variant spelling “Joram” for the son of Jehoshaphat.

Jehoshaphat’s Evil Alliance with Ahaziah

35 Sometime later, King Jehoshaphat of Judah entered into a military alliance with King Ahaziah of Israel, acting wickedly by doing so. 36 He also agreed with King Ahaziah[a] to build ships to sail toward Tarshish, which they built in Ezion-geber. 37 But Dodavahu’s son Eliezer from Mareshah prophesied in opposition to Jehoshaphat, “Because you have entered into an alliance with Ahaziah, the Lord has destroyed your efforts.” So the ships were destroyed and were never able to sail for Tarshish.

Jehoram Succeeds Jehoshaphat(A)

21 Jehoshaphat died, as had his ancestors, and was buried in the City of David alongside his ancestors. His son Jehoram became king in his place.
