1 Från Paulus, som genom Guds vilja är apostel[a] åt Kristus[b] Jesus, i enlighet med löftet om livet som finns i Kristus Jesus.
2 Till Timotheos, mitt kära barn[c].
Nåd, barmhärtighet och frid från Gud, Fadern, och Kristus Jesus, vår Herre.
Var trogen i din uppgift
3 Jag tackar Gud, som jag liksom mina förfäder tjänar, med rent samvete, när jag dag och natt ständigt kommer ihåg dig i mina böner.
4 Jag minns dina tårar och längtar efter att få se dig igen och fyllas av glädje. 5 Jag minns också den uppriktiga tro du har, den som fanns hos din mormor Lois och din mor Eunike. Jag är övertygad om att samma tro nu finns i dig.
6 Därför vill jag påminna dig om att blåsa liv i den nådegåva Gud gav dig, när jag lade mina händer på dig. 7 Gud har inte gett oss en modlöshetens ande, utan kraftens, kärlekens och självbehärskningens. 8 Därför ska du inte skämmas för att vittna om vår Herre, och inte heller skämmas över mig som sitter i fängelse för hans skull. Var beredd att lida för evangeliet du också, för Gud ska ge dig kraft.
9 Han har räddat oss och kallat oss med en helig kallelse, inte på grund av våra gärningar, utan på grund av sitt beslut och sin nåd, som han gav oss i Kristus Jesus redan före tidens början, 10 men som nu har uppenbarats när vår Frälsare Kristus Jesus trätt fram. Han har brutit dödens makt och fört liv och oförgänglighet fram i ljuset genom evangeliet, 11 som jag har utsetts att vara apostel, förkunnare och lärare för. 12 Det är också därför som jag får lida. Men jag skäms inte, för jag vet vem jag tror på, och jag är säker på att han också kan bevara det som har anförtrotts mig, ända till den dagen.
13 Ta det som du har hört från mig som modell för en sund undervisning, i tro och kärlek genom Kristus Jesus. 14 Bevara genom den heliga Anden som bor i oss det goda som du är anförtrodd.
15 Som du vet har alla i provinsen Asien[d] svikit mig, även Fygelos och Hermogenes. 16 Må Herren visa barmhärtighet mot Onesiforos och alla i hans hus, för han har ofta uppmuntrat mig och inte skämts för mina kedjor. 17 När han kom till Rom letade han efter mig överallt tills han hittade mig. 18 Må Herren visa barmhärtighet mot honom på den dagen. Dessutom var han till enorm hjälp i Efesos, det vet du bättre än någon annan.

願父上帝和我們的主基督耶穌的恩典、憐憫和平安臨到你！
勉勵忠心事奉
3 我日夜不停地為你禱告，對我效法祖先用清潔的良心事奉的上帝充滿了感恩。 4 每逢想起你流淚的情形，我就渴望見你，好使我的心充滿喜樂。 5 我記得你那真誠無偽的信心。你外祖母羅以和你母親友妮基首先有了這信心，我深信你也有。 6 因此我提醒你，要把上帝在我把手按在你身上時賜給你的恩賜充分發揮出來。 7 因為上帝賜給我們的不是懦弱的心，而是剛強、仁愛、自律的心。
8 所以，你不要羞於為我們的主做見證，也不要以我這為主被囚的人為恥，要靠著上帝的能力和我一同為福音受苦。 9 上帝拯救了我們，並呼召我們過聖潔的生活，不是因為我們的行為，而是出於祂的旨意和恩典。早在萬古以前，祂就在基督耶穌裡把這恩典賜給我們了， 10 如今藉著我們救主基督耶穌的降世顯明了出來。基督已經消滅了死亡，藉著福音將不朽的生命彰顯了出來。

Prefácio e saudação
1 Paulo, apóstolo de Jesus Cristo, pela vontade de Deus, segundo a promessa da vida que está em Cristo Jesus, 2 a Timóteo, meu amado filho: graça, misericórdia e paz, da parte de Deus Pai, e da de Cristo Jesus, Senhor nosso.
A aflição de Paulo por Timóteo. Exortação à firmeza e à constância no ministério
3 Dou graças a Deus, a quem, desde os meus antepassados, sirvo com uma consciência pura, porque sem cessar faço memória de ti nas minhas orações, noite e dia; 4 desejando muito ver-te, lembrando-me das tuas lágrimas, para me encher de gozo; 5 trazendo à memória a fé não fingida que em ti há, a qual habitou primeiro em tua avó Loide e em tua mãe Eunice, e estou certo de que também habita em ti.
6 Por este motivo, te lembro que despertes o dom de Deus, que existe em ti pela imposição das minhas mãos. 7 Porque Deus não nos deu o espírito de temor, mas de fortaleza, e de amor, e de moderação. 8 Portanto, não te envergonhes do testemunho de nosso Senhor, nem de mim, que sou prisioneiro seu; antes, participa das aflições do evangelho, segundo o poder de Deus, 9 que nos salvou e chamou com uma santa vocação; não segundo as nossas obras, mas segundo o seu próprio propósito e graça que nos foi dada em Cristo Jesus, antes dos tempos dos séculos, 10 e que é manifesta, agora, pela aparição de nosso Salvador Jesus Cristo, o qual aboliu a morte e trouxe à luz a vida e a incorrupção, pelo evangelho, 11 para o que fui constituído pregador, e apóstolo, e doutor dos gentios; 12 por cuja causa padeço também isto, mas não me envergonho, porque eu sei em quem tenho crido e estou certo de que é poderoso para guardar o meu depósito até àquele Dia. 13 Conserva o modelo das sãs palavras que de mim tens ouvido, na fé e no amor que há em Cristo Jesus. 14 Guarda o bom depósito pelo Espírito Santo que habita em nós.
15 Bem sabes isto: que os que estão na Ásia todos se apartaram de mim; entre os quais foram Fígelo e Hermógenes. 16 O Senhor conceda misericórdia à casa de Onesíforo, porque muitas vezes me recreou e não se envergonhou das minhas cadeias; 17 antes, vindo ele a Roma, com muito cuidado me procurou e me achou. 18 O Senhor lhe conceda que, naquele Dia, ache misericórdia diante do Senhor. E, quanto me ajudou em Éfeso, melhor o sabes tu.

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,
2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;
4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;
5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.
15 This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.
16 The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:
17 But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.
18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.
