La venuta del Signore e ciò che la precederà

Ora vi preghiamo, fratelli, riguardo alla venuta del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo e alla nostra riunione con lui, di non lasciarvi così facilmente confondere e turbare, né da pretese ispirazioni, né da parole, né da qualche lettera fatta passare come nostra, quasi che il giorno del Signore sia imminente. Nessuno vi inganni in alcun modo! Prima infatti dovrà avvenire l'apostasia e dovrà esser rivelato l'uomo iniquo, il figlio della perdizione, colui che si contrappone e s'innalza sopra ogni essere che viene detto Dio o è oggetto di culto, fino a sedere nel tempio di Dio, additando se stesso come Dio.

Non ricordate che, quando ancora ero tra voi, venivo dicendo queste cose? E ora sapete ciò che impedisce la sua manifestazione, che avverrà nella sua ora. Il mistero dell'iniquità è gia in atto, ma è necessario che sia tolto di mezzo chi finora lo trattiene. Solo allora sarà rivelato l'empio e il Signore Gesù lo distruggerà con il soffio della sua bocca e lo annienterà all'apparire della sua venuta, l'iniquo, la cui venuta avverrà nella potenza di satana, con ogni specie di portenti, di segni e prodigi menzogneri, 10 e con ogni sorta di empio inganno per quelli che vanno in rovina perché non hanno accolto l'amore della verità per essere salvi. 11 E per questo Dio invia loro una potenza d'inganno perché essi credano alla menzogna 12 e così siano condannati tutti quelli che non hanno creduto alla verità, ma hanno acconsentito all'iniquità.

Esortazione alla perseveranza

13 Noi però dobbiamo rendere sempre grazie a Dio per voi, fratelli amati dal Signore, perché Dio vi ha scelti come primizia per la salvezza, attraverso l'opera santificatrice dello Spirito e la fede nella verità, 14 chiamandovi a questo con il nostro vangelo, per il possesso della gloria del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo.

15 Perciò, fratelli, state saldi e mantenete le tradizioni che avete apprese così dalla nostra parola come dalla nostra lettera. 16 E lo stesso Signore nostro Gesù Cristo e Dio Padre nostro, che ci ha amati e ci ha dato, per sua grazia, una consolazione eterna e una buona speranza, 17 conforti i vostri cuori e li confermi in ogni opera e parola di bene.

Or vi preghiamo, fratelli, riguardo alla venuta del Signor nostro Gesú Cristo e al nostro adunamento con lui,

di non lasciarvi subito sconvolgere nella mente nè turbare o da spirito, o da parola, o da qualche epistola come se venisse da parte nostra, quasi che il giorno di Cristo sia già venuto.

Nessuno v'inganni in alcuna maniera, perché quel giorno non verrà se prima non sia venuta l'apostasia e prima che sia manifestato l'uomo del peccato, il figlio della perdizione,

l'avversario, colui che s'innalza sopra tutto ciò che è chiamato dio o oggetto di adorazione, tanto da porsi a sedere nel tempio di Dio come Dio, mettendo in mostra se stesso e proclamando di essere Dio.

Non vi ricordate che, quando ero ancora tra voi, vi dicevo queste cose?

E ora sapete ciò che lo ritiene, affinché sia manifestato a suo tempo.

Il mistero dell'empietà infatti è già all'opera, aspettando soltanto che chi lo ritiene al presente sia tolto di mezzo.

Allora sarà manifestato quell'empio che il Signore distruggerà col soffio della sua bocca e annienterà all'apparire della sua venuta.

La venuta di quell'empio avverrà per l'azione di Satana, accompagnata da ogni sorta di portenti, di segni e di prodigi bugiardi,

10 e da ogni inganno di malvagità per quelli che periscono, perché hanno rifiutato di amare la verità per essere salvati.

11 E per questo Dio manderà loro efficacia di errore, perché credano alla menzogna,

12 affinché siano giudicati tutti quelli che non hanno creduto alla verità, ma si sono compiaciuti nella malvagità!

13 Ma noi siamo obbligati a rendere del continuo grazie per voi a Dio, fratelli amati dal Signore, perché Dio vi ha eletti fin dal principio per salvarvi, mediante la santificazione dello Spirito e la fede nella verità;

14 a questo egli vi ha chiamati per mezzo del nostro evangelo, affinché giungiate ad ottenere la gloria del Signor nostro Gesú Cristo.

15 Perciò, fratelli, state saldi e ritenete gli insegnamenti che avete imparato tramite la parola o la nostra epistola.

16 Ora, il Signor nostro Gesú Cristo stesso e Dio nostro Padre, che ci ha amati e ci ha dato per grazia una consolazione eterna e una buona speranza,

17 consoli i vostri cuori e vi confermi in ogni buona parola ed opera.

The Day of the Lord

Now regarding the arrival[a] of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to be with him,[b] we ask you, brothers and sisters,[c] not to be easily[d] shaken from your composure or disturbed by any kind of spirit or message or letter allegedly from us,[e] to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not arrive until the rebellion comes[f] and the man of lawlessness[g] is revealed, the son of destruction.[h] He[i] opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, and as a result he takes his seat[j] in God’s temple, displaying himself as God.[k] Surely you recall[l] that I used to tell you these things while I was still with you. And so[m] you know what holds him back,[n] so that he will be revealed in his own time. For the hidden power of lawlessness[o] is already at work. However, the one who holds him back[p] will do so until he is taken out of the way, and then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord[q] will destroy by the breath of his mouth and wipe out by the manifestation of his arrival. The arrival of the lawless one[r] will be by Satan’s working with all kinds of miracles[s] and signs and false wonders, 10 and with every kind of evil deception directed against[t] those who are perishing, because they found no place in their hearts for the truth[u] so as to be saved. 11 Consequently[v] God sends on them a deluding influence[w] so that they will believe what is false. 12 And so[x] all of them who have not believed the truth but have delighted in evil will be condemned.[y]

Call to Stand Firm

13 But we ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters[z] loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning[aa] for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. 14 He called you to this salvation[ab] through our gospel, so that you may possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.[ac] 15 Therefore, brothers and sisters,[ad] stand firm and hold on to the traditions that we taught you, whether by speech or by letter.[ae] 16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you[af] in every good thing you do or say.[ag]

Internally, since ἁμαρτία (hamartia, “sin”) occurs nearly ten times as often as ἀνομία (anomia, “lawlessness”) in the corpus Paulinum, scribes would be expected to change the text to the more familiar term. At the same time, the mention of ἀνομία in v. 7 and ὁ ἄνομος (ho anomos, “the lawless one”) in v. 8, both of which look back to v. 3, may have prompted scribes to change the text toward ἀνομίας. The internal evidence is thus fairly evenly balanced. Although a decision is difficult, ἀνομίας has slightly greater probability of authenticity than ἁμαρτίας.

But apocalyptic texts like Revelation and Daniel portray human government of the end times as under Satanic control, not holding back his influence. Also the power to hold back Satanic forces can only come from God. So others understand this restraint to be some force from God: the preaching of the gospel or the working of the Holy Spirit through God’s people.
  17. 2 Thessalonians 2:8 tc ‡ Several significant witnesses of the Alexandrian and Western traditions, as well as many other witnesses, read ᾿Ιησοῦς (Iēsous, “Jesus”) after κύριος (kurios, “Lord”; so א A D* F G Lc P Ψ 0278 33 81 104 365 1241 2464 latt sy co). But there is sufficient evidence in the Alexandrian tradition for the shorter reading (B 1739 1881), supported by the Byzantine text, Irenaeus, and other witnesses (D2vid 630 1175 1505). Although it is possible that scribes overlooked ᾿Ιησοῦς if the two nomina sacra occurred together (kMsiMs), since “the Lord Jesus” is a frequent enough appellation, it looks to be a motivated reading. NA28 places ᾿Ιησοῦς in brackets, indicating some doubts as to its authenticity.

But Paul would not be likely to call the Thessalonians “the firstfruits” among his converts. Further, ἀπαρχή (aparchē, “firstfruit”) is a well-worn term in Paul’s letters (Rom 8:23; 11:16; 16:5; 1 Cor 15:20, 23; 16:15), while ἀπ᾿ ἀρχῆς occurs nowhere else in Paul. Scribes might be expected to change the text to the more familiar term. Nevertheless, a decision is difficult (see arguments for ἀπαρχήν in TCGNT 568), and ἀπ᾿ ἀρχῆς must be preferred only slightly.

Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ(A) and our being gathered to him,(B) we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter(C)—asserting that the day of the Lord(D) has already come.(E) Don’t let anyone deceive you(F) in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion(G) occurs and the man of lawlessness[a] is revealed,(H) the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God(I) or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.(J)

Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things?(K) And now you know what is holding him back,(L) so that he may be revealed at the proper time. For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back(M) will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed,(N) whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth(O) and destroy by the splendor of his coming.(P) The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan(Q) works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders(R) that serve the lie, 10 and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing.(S) They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.(T) 11 For this reason God sends them(U) a powerful delusion(V) so that they will believe the lie(W) 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.(X)

Stand Firm

13 But we ought always to thank God for you,(Y) brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits[b](Z) to be saved(AA) through the sanctifying work of the Spirit(AB) and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you(AC) to this through our gospel,(AD) that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm(AE) and hold fast to the teachings[c] we passed on to you,(AF) whether by word of mouth or by letter.

16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father,(AG) who loved us(AH) and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage(AI) your hearts and strengthen(AJ) you in every good deed and word.
