1 Paulo, e Silvano, e Timóteo, à igreja dos tessalonicenses, em Deus, nosso Pai, e no Senhor Jesus Cristo: 2 graça e paz a vós, da parte de Deus, nosso Pai, e da do Senhor Jesus Cristo.
O progresso e a constância dos tessalonicenses na fé e no amor, a despeito das perseguições
3 Sempre devemos, irmãos, dar graças a Deus por vós, como é de razão, porque a vossa fé cresce muitíssimo, e o amor de cada um de vós aumenta de uns para com os outros, 4 de maneira que nós mesmos nos gloriamos de vós nas igrejas de Deus, por causa da vossa paciência e fé, e em todas as vossas perseguições e aflições que suportais, 5 prova clara do justo juízo de Deus, para que sejais havidos por dignos do Reino de Deus, pelo qual também padeceis; 6 se, de fato, é justo diante de Deus que dê em paga tribulação aos que vos atribulam, 7 e a vós, que sois atribulados, descanso conosco, quando se manifestar o Senhor Jesus desde o céu, com os anjos do seu poder, 8 como labareda de fogo, tomando vingança dos que não conhecem a Deus e dos que não obedecem ao evangelho de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo; 9 os quais, por castigo, padecerão eterna perdição, ante a face do Senhor e a glória do seu poder, 10 quando vier para ser glorificado nos seus santos e para se fazer admirável, naquele Dia, em todos os que creem (porquanto o nosso testemunho foi crido entre vós). 11 Pelo que também rogamos sempre por vós, para que o nosso Deus vos faça dignos da sua vocação e cumpra todo desejo da sua bondade e a obra da fé com poder; 12 para que o nome de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo seja em vós glorificado, e vós nele, segundo a graça de nosso Deus e do Senhor Jesus Cristo.

1 Eu, Paulo, e Silas, e Timóteo escrevemos esta carta aos irmãos da igreja da cidade de Tessalônica, irmãos que estão unidos com Deus, o nosso Pai, e com o Senhor Jesus Cristo.
2 Que a graça e a paz de Deus, o nosso Pai, e do Senhor Jesus Cristo estejam com vocês!
O Juízo Final
3 Irmãos, sempre temos de dar graças a Deus por vocês. Para nós é certo fazer isso porque a fé que vocês têm está crescendo cada vez mais, e o amor que vocês têm uns pelos outros está se tornando cada vez maior. 4 É por isso que nas igrejas de Deus falamos com orgulho sobre vocês. Nós temos orgulho de vocês por causa da paciência e da fé que vocês mostram no meio de todas as perseguições e sofrimentos. 5 Esta é uma prova de que Deus é justo na sua maneira de julgar.
Como resultado disso, vocês se tornarão merecedores do seu Reino, pelo qual estão sofrendo. 6 Deus fará o que é justo: ele trará sofrimento para aqueles que fazem com que vocês sofram 7 e dará descanso a vocês e também a nós, que sofremos. Ele fará isso quando o Senhor Jesus vier do céu e aparecer junto com os seus anjos poderosos, 8 no meio de chamas de fogo, para castigar os que rejeitam a Deus e não obedecem ao evangelho do nosso Senhor Jesus. 9 Eles serão castigados com a destruição eterna e ficarão longe da presença do Senhor e do seu glorioso poder. 10 Isso acontecerá naquele dia, o dia em que ele vier para ser louvado por todo o seu povo e para receber homenagens de todos os que creem. Vocês também estarão entre eles, pois creram na mensagem que nós anunciamos.
11 É por isso que sempre oramos por vocês, pedindo que o nosso Deus, que chamou vocês para a nova vida, faça com que sejam merecedores dela. Pedimos também que ele, pelo seu poder, realize todos os desejos que vocês têm de fazer o bem e complete o trabalho que fazem com fé. 12 Assim Jesus, o nosso Senhor, será louvado por causa do comportamento de vocês, e vocês serão elogiados por ele, por meio da graça do nosso Deus e do Senhor Jesus Cristo.

Salutation
1 From Paul[a] and Silvanus and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Grace and peace to you[b] from God the[c] Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
Thanksgiving
3 We ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters,[d] and rightly so,[e] because your faith flourishes more and more and the love of each one of you all for one another is ever greater. 4 As a result we ourselves boast about you in the churches of God for your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and afflictions you are enduring.
Encouragement in Persecution
5 This is evidence of God’s righteous judgment, to make you worthy[f] of the kingdom of God, for which in fact you are suffering. 6 For it is right[g] for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7 and to you who are being afflicted to give rest together with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed[h] from heaven with his mighty angels.[i] 8 With flaming fire he will mete out[j] punishment on those who do not know God[k] and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They[l] will undergo the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength,[m] 10 when he comes to be glorified among his saints and admired[n] on that day among all who have believed—and you did in fact believe our testimony.[o] 11 And in this regard we pray for you always, that our God will make you worthy of his calling[p] and fulfill by his power your every desire for goodness and every work of faith, 12 that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to[q] the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

- 2 Thessalonians 1:2 tc ‡ Most witnesses (א A F G I 0278 1175 1241 1505 2464 M lat sy sa) have ἡμῶν (hēmōn) after πατρός (patros), reading “God our Father,” in apparent emulation of Paul’s almost universal style. The omission of the pronoun (the reading of B D P 0111vid 33 1739 1881 SBL) seems to be the earlier wording of this salutation. As well, the intrinsic evidence also supports the shorter reading: If 2 Thessalonians is authentic, it was one of Paul’s earliest letters, and, if so, his stereotyped salutation was still in embryonic form (see discussion at 1 Thess 1:1). NA28 places the word in brackets, indicating some doubts as to its authenticity.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:3 tn Grk “brothers,” but the Greek word may be used for “brothers and sisters” or “fellow Christians” as here (cf. BDAG 18 s.v. ἀδελφός 1, where considerable nonbiblical evidence for the plural ἀδελφοί [adelphoi] meaning “brothers and sisters” is cited).
- 2 Thessalonians 1:3 tn Grk “as is worthy.”
- 2 Thessalonians 1:5 tn Grk “so that you may be made worthy.” The passive infinitive καταξιωθῆναι (kataxiōthēnai) has been translated as an active construction in English for stylistic reasons.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:6 tn Grk “if in fact/since,” as a continuation of the preceding.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:7 tn Grk “at the revelation of the Lord Jesus.”
- 2 Thessalonians 1:7 tn Grk “angels of power,” translated as an attributive genitive.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:8 tn Grk “meting out,” as a description of Jesus Christ in v. 7. Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started at the beginning of v. 8 in the translation.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:8 sn An allusion to Jer 10:25, possibly also to Ps 79:6 and Isa 66:15.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:9 tn Grk “who,” describing the people mentioned in v. 8. A new sentence was started here in the translation by replacing the relative pronoun with a personal pronoun.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:9 tn Or “power,” or “might.” The construction can also be translated as an attributed genitive: “from his glorious strength” (cf. TEV “glorious might”; CEV “glorious strength”; NLT “glorious power”).sn An allusion to Isa 2:10, 19, 21.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:10 tn Or “marveled at.”
