5 Nu kom alla Israels stammar till David i Hebron och sa: ”Vi är ditt eget kött och blod! 2 Redan när Saul var kung var det du som anförde Israel i strid. Herren sa till dig: ’Du ska vara herde för mitt folk Israel, du ska vara furste över Israel!’ ”

3 Alla de äldste i Israel kom alltså nu till kung David i Hebron. David slöt ett förbund med dem inför Herren där i Hebron och de smorde honom till kung över Israel. 4 David var trettio år när han blev kung och han regerade i fyrtio år. 5 Först regerade han över Juda i Hebron i sju och ett halvt år och sedan regerade han i Jerusalem över både Israel och Juda under trettiotre år.

Davids rike upprättas evigt

(5:6—10:19)

David intar Jerusalem

(1 Krön 11:4-9; 14:1-2)

6 David ledde nu sina trupper mot Jerusalem för att strida mot jevuséerna som bodde där. ”Här kommer du inte in!” sa jevuséerna till honom. ”Till och med blinda och lama kan driva bort dig härifrån!” De menade att David inte kunde komma in där.

7 David intog då Sions borg, Davids stad. 8 David sa då: ”Den som vill slå jevuséerna ska genom vattentunneln nå fram till dessa blinda och lama som David hatar.[a]” Detta är ursprunget till talesättet: ” ’Blinda och lama’ får inte komma in i huset.”

9 David bosatte sig i borgen och han kallade den Davids stad. Han byggde upp staden med utgångspunkt från Millo[b] och sedan vidare inåt. 10 David blev allt mäktigare, för Herren härskarornas Gud var med honom.

11 Kung Hiram i Tyros skickade budbärare till David med stockar av cederträ och med snickare och murare för att bygga Davids palats. 12 Nu förstod David att Herren hade befäst hans kungadöme och upphöjt det för hans folk Israels skull.

13 Efter det att David flyttat från Hebron till Jerusalem, tog han sig fler hustrur och bihustrur och fick många söner och döttrar. 14 Dessa söner föddes åt honom i Jerusalem: Shammua, Shovav, Natan, Salomo, 15 Jivchar, Elishua, Nefeg, Jafia, 16 Elishama, Eljada och Elifelet.

David besegrar filistéerna

(1 Krön 14:8-17)

17 Filistéerna fick höra att David var smord till kung över Israel och de gav sig ut efter honom.[c] Men David fick höra om det och gick ner till borgen. 18 Filistéerna for fram och spred ut sig i Refaimdalen.

19 Då frågade David Herren: ”Ska jag dra ut mot filistéerna? Kommer du att överlämna dem åt mig?”

Herren svarade: ”Ja, gå! Jag ska överlämna dem åt dig!”

20 David gick då till Baal-Perasim och slog filistéerna där. ”Herren har brutit ner mina fiender genom min hand liksom vatten som bryter fram”, sa han. Det är därför platsen kallas Baal-Perasim[d]. 21 David och hans trupper lade också beslag på många avgudar som hade lämnats kvar av filistéerna.[e]

22 Men filistéerna steg upp och spred sig i Refaimdalen. 23 När David frågade Herren, svarade han: ”Du ska inte gå efter dem utan ta en omväg runt bakaträden! 24 Gå till attack när du hör ljudet som av en här på marsch i trädtopparna! Då har Herren gått före dig för att slå filistéernas armé.”

25 David gjorde som Herren hade befallt honom och han slog ner filistéer från Givon ända till Geser.

David blir kung över hela Israel

5 Sedan kom alla Israels stammar till David i Hebron och sade: "Vi är av samma kött och blod som du. 2 Redan för länge sedan, ännu medan Saul var kung över oss, var det du som var ledare och anförare för Israel. Till dig har Herren sagt: Du skall vara herde för mitt folk Israel, ja, du skall vara furste över Israel." 3 När alla de äldste i Israel kom till kungen i Hebron, slöt kung David förbund med dem i Hebron inför Herren. Och de smorde David till kung över Israel. 4 David var trettio år när han blev kung, och han regerade i fyrtio år. 5 I Hebron regerade han över Juda i sju år och sex månader, och i Jerusalem regerade han i trettiotre år över hela Israel och Juda.

David erövrar Jerusalem

6 Kungen och hans män tågade nu mot Jerusalem och jebusiterna som bodde där i landet. Dessa sade till David: "Hit in kommer du inte, till och med blinda och halta skall driva bort dig." De tänkte: David kan inte komma hit in. 7 Men David intog Sions borg, det vill säga Davids stad.

8 På den dagen sade David: "Den som slår jebusiterna skall genom vattentunneln nå fram till dessa halta och blinda som Davids själ hatar." Därför brukar man säga: "Ingen blind eller halt skall komma in i huset."

9 Och David slog sig ner på borgen och kallade den Davids stad. Där byggde han runt omkring, från Millo och vidare inåt. 10 David blev allt mäktigare, och Herren, härskarornas Gud, var med honom.

11 Hiram, kungen i Tyrus, skickade sändebud till David med cederträ och med timmermän och stenhuggare, och de byggde ett hus åt David. 12 Och David märkte att Herren hade befäst honom som kung över Israel och att han hade upphöjt hans kungadöme för sitt folk Israels skull.

13 David tog sig ännu fler bihustrur och hustrur från Jerusalem sedan han hade lämnat Hebron, och ännu fler söner och döttrar föddes åt David. 14 Detta är namnen på de söner som föddes åt honom i Jerusalem: Sammua, Sobab, Natan, Salomo, 15 Jibhar, Elisua, Nefeg, Jafia, 16 Elisama, Eljada och Elifelet.

David besegrar filisteerna

17 När filisteerna hörde att David hade blivit smord till kung över Israel, drog de alla upp för att söka efter David. När David hörde detta, gick han ner till borgen. 18 Sedan filisteerna hade kommit fram spred de sig i Refaimdalen. 19 Då frågade David Herren: "Skall jag dra upp mot filisteerna? Skall du då ge dem i min hand?" Herren svarade David: "Drag upp! Jag skall ge filisteerna i din hand."

20 Så kom David till Baal-Perasim, och där besegrade David dem. Han sade: " Herren har brutit ner[a] mina fiender inför mig, så som vatten bryter fram." Därav fick platsen namnet Baal-Perasim. 21 Filisteerna övergav där sina avgudabilder, och David och hans män förde bort dem.

22 Men filisteerna drog upp än en gång och spred sig i Refaimdalen. 23 När David då frågade Herren, svarade han: "Du skall inte dra dit upp. Gå runt dem bakifrån och kom över dem från det håll där bakaträden står. 24 Så snart du hör ljudet av ett marscherande i bakaträdens toppar, skall du genast rycka fram, ty då har Herren dragit ut framför dig för att slå filisteernas här." 25 Och David gjorde som Herren hade befallt honom. Han slog filisteerna och förföljde dem från Geba ända till Gezer.

David Becomes King Over Israel(A)

5 All the tribes of Israel(B) came to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood.(C) 2 In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns.(D) And the Lord said(E) to you, ‘You will shepherd(F) my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.(G)’”

3 When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant(H) with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed(I) David king over Israel.

4 David was thirty years old(J) when he became king, and he reigned(K) forty(L) years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months,(M) and in Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.

David Conquers Jerusalem(N)(O)

6 The king and his men marched to Jerusalem(P) to attack the Jebusites,(Q) who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off.” They thought, “David cannot get in here.” 7 Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion(R)—which is the City of David.(S)

8 On that day David had said, “Anyone who conquers the Jebusites will have to use the water shaft(T) to reach those ‘lame and blind’(U) who are David’s enemies.[a]” That is why they say, “The ‘blind and lame’ will not enter the palace.”

9 David then took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built up the area around it, from the terraces[b](V) inward. 10 And he became more and more powerful,(W) because the Lord God Almighty(X) was with him.(Y)

11 Now Hiram(Z) king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with cedar logs and carpenters and stonemasons, and they built a palace for David. 12 Then David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and had exalted his kingdom(AA) for the sake of his people Israel.

13 After he left Hebron, David took more concubines and wives(AB) in Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to him. 14 These are the names of the children born to him there:(AC) Shammua, Shobab, Nathan,(AD) Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet.

David Defeats the Philistines(AE)

17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went down to the stronghold.(AF) 18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim;(AG) 19 so David inquired(AH) of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?”

The Lord answered him, “Go, for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hands.”

20 So David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me.” So that place was called Baal Perazim.[c](AI) 21 The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them off.(AJ)

22 Once more the Philistines came up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; 23 so David inquired of the Lord, and he answered, “Do not go straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. 24 As soon as you hear the sound(AK) of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move quickly, because that will mean the Lord has gone out in front(AL) of you to strike the Philistine army.” 25 So David did as the Lord commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines(AM) all the way from Gibeon[d](AN) to Gezer.(AO)

The Conquest of Jerusalem(L)

6 (M)And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against (N)the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, “You shall not come in here; but the blind and the lame will repel you,” thinking, “David cannot come in here.” 7 Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion (O)(that is, the City of David).

8 Now David said on that day, “Whoever climbs up by way of the water shaft and defeats the Jebusites (the lame and the blind, who are hated by David’s soul), (P)he shall be chief and captain.” Therefore they say, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.”

9 Then David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it (Q)the City of David. And David built all around from [a]the Millo and inward. 10 So David went on and became great, and (R)the Lord God of hosts was with (S)him.

11 Then (T)Hiram (U)king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters and masons. And they built David a house. 12 So David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, and that He had (V)exalted His kingdom (W)for the sake of His people Israel.

The Philistines Defeated(AA)

And David heard of it (AC)and went down to the stronghold. 18 The Philistines also went and deployed themselves in (AD)the Valley of Rephaim. 19 So David (AE)inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?”

And the Lord said to David, “Go up, for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into your hand.”

20 So David went to (AF)Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place [d]Baal Perazim. 21 And they left their [e]images there, and David and his men (AG)carried them away.

22 (AH)Then the Philistines went up once again and deployed themselves in the Valley of Rephaim. 23 Therefore (AI)David inquired of the Lord, and He said, “You shall not go up; circle around behind them, and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees. 24 And it shall be, when you (AJ)hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall advance quickly. For then (AK)the Lord will go out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.” 25 And David did so, as the Lord commanded him; and he drove back the Philistines from (AL)Geba[f] as far as (AM)Gezer.

24 And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the Lord go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.

25 And David did so, as the Lord had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.
