David får övertaget
3 Detta var början till det långa kriget mellan Sauls anhängare och Davids. Davids ställning blev allt starkare, medan motståndarnas inflytande avtog.
2 David fick flera söner medan han bodde i Hebron. Den äldste hette Amnon, och Ahinoam från Jisreel var mor till honom.
3 Hans andre son hette Kilab, och det var Abigail, änkan till Nabal från Karmel, som var hans mor. Den tredje sonen hette Absalom. Hans mor hette Maaka och hon var dotter till kung Gesur.
4 Den fjärde sonen föddes av Haggit och hette Adonia. Abital födde Sefatja, och
5 Egla födde Jitream.
Abner förhandlar med David
6 Allteftersom kriget fortsatte, stärkte Abner sin position bland Sauls efterföljare.
7 Han utnyttjade sin ställning och låg med Rispa, en flicka som varit en av Sauls bihustrur. När Is-Boset anklagade Abner för detta,
8 blev Abner rasande.Är jag en judisk hund som du kan behandla hur du vill? skrek han. Är detta min belöning? Efter allt vad jag har gjort för dig och för din far genom att inte förråda dig till David så anklagar du mig för en kvinnas skull?
9-10 Gud får straffa mig om jag inte gör allt jag kan för att ta riket från dig, hela vägen från Dan till Beer-Seba, och ge det till David, precis som Herren har förutsagt.
11 Is-Boset vågade inte säga ett ord till om saken. Han blev rädd för Abner.
12 Då sände Abner budbärare till David för att föreslå en överenskommelse. Mot en viss belöning var Abner villig att överlämna hela Israel till David.
13 David svarade: Det ska väl kunna gå, men jag vill inte förhandla med dig om du inte tar med dig min hustru Mikal, Sauls dotter.
14 David sände sedan följande besked till Is-Boset: Ge mig tillbaka min hustru Mikal, som jag köpte för hundra döda filisteer.
15 Då lät Is-Boset hämta henne från hennes man Paltiel,
16 som gråtande följde henne ända till Bahurim. Där befallde Abner honom att återvända hem.
17 Under tiden rådgjorde Abner med Israels ledare och påminde dem om att de under en lång tid hade velat få David till kung.
18 Han sa till dem: Nu är det dags, för Herren har sagt: 'Det är David som jag ska använda för att frälsa folket från filisteerna och alla andra fiender.'
19 Abner talade också med ledarna för Benjamins stam. Sedan gick han till Hebron och rapporterade för David om förhandlingarna med Benjamins och Israels folk.
20 Tjugo män följde med honom dit, och David ordnade med en fest för dem.
21 När Abner gick därifrån, lovade han David: När jag kommer tillbaka, ska jag sammankalla hela Israels folk, och de kommer att välja dig till kung, som du så länge önskat. Då garanterade David Abners säkerhet och lät honom återvända.
Joab dödar Abner
22 Men strax efter det att Abner hade gått, kom Joab och några av Davids män tillbaka från en plundringsfärd, och de hade mycket byte med sig.
23 Joab fick reda på att Abner just hade varit gäst hos kungen och återvänt oskadd.
24-25 Han rusade in till kungen och ropade: Vad har du gjort? Vad menar du med att låta honom komma undan? Du vet mycket väl att han kom för att spionera på oss och att han planerar att återvända och anfalla oss!
26 Utan att David visste något skickade Joab budbärare för att hinna upp Abner och be honom komma tillbaka. De hann ifatt honom vid Siras brunn, och han återvände med dem.
27 När Abner kom till Hebron tog Joab honom åt sidan vid stadsporten, som om han ville tala med honom i enrum. Men i stället drog han fram en dolk och dödade honom för att hämnas sin bror Asael.
28 När David hörde om detta, sa han: Jag lovar inför Herren att jag och mitt folk är oskyldiga till detta brott mot Abner.
29 Joab och hans familj är de skyldiga, och det ska alltid förekomma spetälska, handikapp, barnlöshet och olyckor i deras familj.
30 Joab och hans bror Abisai dödade alltså Abner därför att han hade dödat deras bror Asael i slaget vid Gibeon.
31 Sedan sa David till Joab och alla dem som var med honom: Riv sönder era kläder. Ta på er sorgkläder och sörj över att Abner är död.Kung David följde också med ut till gravplatsen.
32 De begravde Abner i Hebron, och kungen och allt folket grät och sörjde. Kungen sjöng en klagosång:
33-34 Varför måste Abner dö som en dåre? Dina händer var inte bundna, dina fötter inte i bojor.Du mördades, ett offer för sammansvärjning.Och allt folket grät än en gång för hans skull.
35-36 Sedan kom man med mat till David, men han lovade Gud att han inte skulle äta något förrän solen gått ner. Detta gillade hans folk. Ja, allt David gjorde uppskattades av dem.
37 Den dagen förstod hela folket, både Juda och Israel, att David inte på något sätt var skyldig till Abners död.
38 David sa till sina män: En stor ledare och en stor man i Israel har i dag fallit.
39 Och även om jag är Guds utvalde kung, så kan jag inte göra något åt dessa söner till Seruja. Men Herren ska låta sin hämnd drabba dessa grymma människor för deras onda gärningar!

Davids söner
3 Kriget mellan Sauls hus och Davids hus blev långvarigt. Under tiden blev David allt starkare, medan Sauls hus blev allt svagare.
2 I Hebron föddes söner åt David. Hans förstfödde var Amnon, som han fick med Ahinoam från Jisreel. 3 Hans andre son var Kilab, som han fick med Abigail, änka efter karmeliten Nabal, och den tredje var Absalom, son till Maaka som var dotter till Talmaj, kungen i Gesur. 4 Den fjärde var Adonia, Haggits son, och den femte Sefatja, Abitals son. 5 Den sjätte var Jitream, som David fick med sin hustru Egla. Dessa föddes åt David i Hebron.
Abner går över till David
6 Så länge kriget varade mellan Sauls hus och Davids hus, stärkte Abner sin ställning i Sauls hus. 7 Men Saul hade haft en bihustru vid namn Rispa, dotter till Aja. Och Is-Boset sade till Abner: "Varför har du gått in till min fars bihustru?" 8 Abner blev mycket upprörd över dessa ord och sade: "Är jag då ett hundhuvud från Juda land? Just då jag visar godhet mot din fader Sauls hus, mot hans bröder och hans vänner, och inte har låtit dig falla i Davids hand, beskyller du mig för att ha begått en missgärning med denna kvinna. 9 Må Gud straffa Abner både nu och senare, om jag inte handlar så med David som Herren med ed har lovat honom. 10 Jag skall ta kungadömet från Sauls hus och upprätta Davids tron över både Israel och Juda, från Dan ända till Beer-Sheba." 11 Då kunde han inte säga ett ord mer till Abner av rädsla för honom.
12 Abner skickade sändebud till David och lät säga: "Vem tillhör landet? Slut förbund med mig och jag skall ge dig mitt stöd så att hela Israel går över till dig."
13 David svarade: "Bra! Jag vill sluta förbund med dig. Men en sak kräver jag av dig: Du får inte träda fram inför mitt ansikte utan att föra med dig Mikal, Sauls dotter, när du kommer för att träda fram inför mig." 14 Därefter skickade David sändebud till Is-Boset, Sauls son, och lät säga: "Ge mig min hustru Mikal, som jag tog mig till priset av etthundra filisteers förhudar." 15 Då sände Is-Boset bud och lät hämta henne från hennes man, Paltiel, Laish son.
16 Men hennes man gick med henne och följde henne gråtande ända till Bahurim. Här sade Abner till honom: "Vänd tillbaka och gå hem." Då vände han tillbaka.
17 Abner hade talat med de äldste i Israel och sagt: "Sedan lång tid har ni försökt att få David till kung över er. 18 Låt det nu ske, för Herren har sagt om David: Genom min tjänare Davids hand skall jag frälsa mitt folk Israel från filisteerna och från alla deras fiender." 19 Och Abner talade också med benjaminiterna. Därefter gick Abner till David i Hebron för att berätta allt vad Israel och hela Benjamins hus funnit vara riktigt. 20 Abner kom till David i Hebron, åtföljd av tjugo man, och David ordnade en fest för Abner och hans män. 21 Abner sade till David: "Jag vill ge mig av och samla hela Israel till min herre konungen, för att de må sluta förbund med dig, så att du kan regera över allt vad ditt hjärta önskar." Då lät David Abner fara, och han gav sig av i frid.
Abner dödas av Joab
22 Davids folk och Joab kom just då tillbaka från ett plundringståg och de förde med sig ett stort byte. Abner var nu inte längre kvar hos David i Hebron, för David hade låtit honom gå, och han hade givit sig av i frid. 23 När Joab och hela hans här kom, berättade man för honom att Abner, Ners son, hade kommit till kungen, som låtit honom gå, och att han hade givit sig av i frid. 24 Då gick Joab in till kungen och sade: "Vad har du gjort? Abner kommer till dig, och du låter honom bara gå härifrån! 25 Du känner Abner, Ners son. Han kom för att bedra dig och få veta alla dina krigsplaner och ta reda på allt vad du har för dig."
26 När Joab hade gått ut från David, sände han bud efter Abner, och de fick honom att vända tillbaka när han var vid Sirabrunnen. Men David visste ingenting om detta. 27 Då Abner kom tillbaka till Hebron, förde Joab honom avsides till mitten av porten för att tala enskilt med honom. Där stack han ner honom med ett dödande hugg i magen, som hämnd för sin bror Asaels blod.
28 När David senare fick höra detta, sade han: "Jag och mitt kungadöme är för evigt oskyldiga inför Herren till Abners, Ners sons, blod. 29 Må det komma över Joabs huvud och över hela hans fars hus. Må i Joabs hus aldrig saknas män som har flytning eller spetälska eller som stöder sig på kryckor eller som faller för svärd eller som lider brist på bröd." 30 Så hade Joab och hans bror Abisaj mördat Abner, därför att denne hade dödat deras bror Asael under striden vid Gibeon.
David sörjer Abner
31 David sade till Joab och allt folket som var med honom: "Riv sönder era kläder och kläd er i säcktyg och håll dödsklagan efter Abner." Och kung David gick själv bakom båren. 32 De begravde Abner i Hebron. Kungen brast ut i gråt vid Abners grav, och allt folket grät. 33 Och kungen sjöng en klagosång över Abner:
"Måste då Abner dö en dåres död?
34 Dina händer var ej bundna,
dina fötter ej slagna i bojor.
Du föll som man faller för onda män."
Då grät allt folket ännu mer över honom.
35 Sedan kom de alla för att förmå David att äta något medan det ännu var dag. Men David svor en ed och sade: "Må Gud straffa mig både nu och senare om jag smakar bröd eller något annat, innan solen har gått ner!" 36 Folket hörde detta, och det togs väl emot av alla, så som allt annat kungen gjorde togs väl emot av allt folket. 37 Hela folket och hela Israel insåg då att kungen inte hade haft någon del i att Abner, Ners son, hade blivit dödad. 38 Kungen sade till sina tjänare: "Vet ni inte att en furste och en stor man i dag har fallit i Israel? 39 Men jag är i dag svag, fastän jag är smord till kung, och de där männen, Serujas söner, är starkare än jag. Må Herren vedergälla den som gör ont för hans ondska."

3 The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time.(A) David grew stronger and stronger,(B) while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.(C)
2 Sons were born to David in Hebron:
His firstborn was Amnon(D) the son of Ahinoam(E) of Jezreel;
3 his second, Kileab the son of Abigail(F) the widow of Nabal of Carmel;
the third, Absalom(G) the son of Maakah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;(H)
4 the fourth, Adonijah(I) the son of Haggith;
the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;
5 and the sixth, Ithream the son of David’s wife Eglah.
These were born to David in Hebron.
Abner Goes Over to David
6 During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner(J) had been strengthening his own position in the house of Saul. 7 Now Saul had had a concubine(K) named Rizpah(L) daughter of Aiah. And Ish-Bosheth said to Abner, “Why did you sleep with my father’s concubine?”
8 Abner was very angry because of what Ish-Bosheth said. So he answered, “Am I a dog’s head(M)—on Judah’s side? This very day I am loyal to the house of your father Saul and to his family and friends. I haven’t handed you over to David. Yet now you accuse me of an offense involving this woman! 9 May God deal with Abner, be it ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the Lord promised(N) him on oath 10 and transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish David’s throne over Israel and Judah from Dan to Beersheba.”(O) 11 Ish-Bosheth did not dare to say another word to Abner, because he was afraid of him.
12 Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to say to David, “Whose land is it? Make an agreement with me, and I will help you bring all Israel over to you.”
13 “Good,” said David. “I will make an agreement with you. But I demand one thing of you: Do not come into my presence unless you bring Michal daughter of Saul when you come to see me.”(P) 14 Then David sent messengers to Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, demanding, “Give me my wife Michal,(Q) whom I betrothed to myself for the price of a hundred Philistine foreskins.”
15 So Ish-Bosheth gave orders and had her taken away from her husband(R) Paltiel(S) son of Laish. 16 Her husband, however, went with her, weeping behind her all the way to Bahurim.(T) Then Abner said to him, “Go back home!” So he went back.
17 Abner conferred with the elders(U) of Israel and said, “For some time you have wanted to make David your king. 18 Now do it! For the Lord promised David, ‘By my servant David I will rescue my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines(V) and from the hand of all their enemies.(W)’”
19 Abner also spoke to the Benjamites in person. Then he went to Hebron to tell David everything that Israel and the whole tribe of Benjamin(X) wanted to do. 20 When Abner, who had twenty men with him, came to David at Hebron, David prepared a feast(Y) for him and his men. 21 Then Abner said to David, “Let me go at once and assemble all Israel for my lord the king, so that they may make a covenant(Z) with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires.”(AA) So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.
Joab Murders Abner
22 Just then David’s men and Joab returned from a raid and brought with them a great deal of plunder. But Abner was no longer with David in Hebron, because David had sent him away, and he had gone in peace. 23 When Joab and all the soldiers with him arrived, he was told that Abner son of Ner had come to the king and that the king had sent him away and that he had gone in peace.
24 So Joab went to the king and said, “What have you done? Look, Abner came to you. Why did you let him go? Now he is gone! 25 You know Abner son of Ner; he came to deceive you and observe your movements and find out everything you are doing.”
26 Joab then left David and sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the cistern at Sirah. But David did not know it. 27 Now when Abner(AB) returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him(AC) in the stomach, and he died.(AD)
28 Later, when David heard about this, he said, “I and my kingdom are forever innocent(AE) before the Lord concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner. 29 May his blood(AF) fall on the head of Joab and on his whole family!(AG) May Joab’s family never be without someone who has a running sore(AH) or leprosy[a] or who leans on a crutch or who falls by the sword or who lacks food.”
30 (Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle at Gibeon.)
31 Then David said to Joab and all the people with him, “Tear your clothes and put on sackcloth(AI) and walk in mourning(AJ) in front of Abner.” King David himself walked behind the bier. 32 They buried Abner in Hebron, and the king wept(AK) aloud at Abner’s tomb. All the people wept also.
33 The king sang this lament(AL) for Abner:
“Should Abner have died as the lawless die?
34 Your hands were not bound,
your feet were not fettered.(AM)
You fell as one falls before the wicked.”
And all the people wept over him again.
35 Then they all came and urged David to eat something while it was still day; but David took an oath, saying, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,(AN) if I taste bread(AO) or anything else before the sun sets!”
36 All the people took note and were pleased; indeed, everything the king did pleased them. 37 So on that day all the people there and all Israel knew that the king had no part(AP) in the murder of Abner son of Ner.
38 Then the king said to his men, “Do you not realize that a commander and a great man has fallen(AQ) in Israel this day? 39 And today, though I am the anointed king, I am weak, and these sons of Zeruiah(AR) are too strong(AS) for me.(AT) May the Lord repay(AU) the evildoer according to his evil deeds!”

9 So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the Lord hath sworn to David, even so I do to him;
10 To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.
11 And he could not answer Abner a word again, because he feared him.
12 And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.
13 And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul's daughter, when thou comest to see my face.
14 And David sent messengers to Ishbosheth Saul's son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines.
15 And Ishbosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish.
16 And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned.
17 And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you:
18 Now then do it: for the Lord hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.
19 And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin.
20 So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast.
21 And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.
22 And, behold, the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.
23 When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.
24 Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?
25 Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest.
26 And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not.
27 And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.
28 And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the Lord for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner:
29 Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father's house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.
30 So Joab, and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.
31 And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David himself followed the bier.
32 And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.
33 And the king lamented over Abner, and said, Died Abner as a fool dieth?
34 Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. And all the people wept again over him.
35 And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down.
36 And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them: as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people.
37 For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner.
38 And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?
39 And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the Lord shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.
