David får övertaget
3 Kriget mellan Sauls ätt och Davids blev långvarigt. Davids ställning blev allt starkare, medan motståndarnas position blev allt svagare.
2 David fick ett flertal söner medan han bodde i Hebron.
Den förstfödde hette Amnon, och han föddes av Achinoam från Jisreel.
3 Hans andre son hette Kilav, och han föddes av Avigajil, änkan till Naval från Karmel.
Den tredje sonen hette Absalom. Hans mor hette Maaka och hon var dotter till Talmaj, kungen av Geshur.
4 Den fjärde sonen var Adonia, som föddes av Haggit.
Den femte var Shefatja, son till Avital,
5 och den sjätte Jitream, son till Davids hustru Egla.
Alla dessa söner föddes åt David i Hebron.
Avner förhandlar med David
6 Allt eftersom kriget fortsatte, stärkte Avner sin position hos Sauls ätt. 7 Saul hade haft en bihustru vid namn Rispa, Ajas dotter, och när nu Ish-Boshet anklagade Avner för att ha legat med sin fars bihustru, 8 blev Avner rasande för Ish-Boshets beskyllning.
”Är jag en hund från Juda? Jag har varit lojal mot din far, Sauls familj, hans bröder och vänner och inte överlämnat dig åt David och så anklagar du mig för en kvinnas skull! 9 Gud får straffa Avner om jag inte gör allt som Herren med ed har lovat David: 10 att låta kungamakten tas från Sauls ätt och sätta David på tronen i Israel och i Juda, från Dan till Beer Sheva![a]”
11 Ish-Boshet vågade inte säga ett ord till om saken. Han blev rädd för Avner.
12 Efter det sände Avner budbärare till David för att säga: ”Vems land är detta? Slut förbund med mig, så ska jag hjälpa dig att få hela Israel på din sida!”
13 David svarade: ”Jag ingår gärna förbund med dig, men jag vägrar förhandla, om du inte tar med dig min hustru Mikal, Sauls dotter.” 14 David sände sedan följande besked till Ish-Boshet: ”Ge mig tillbaka min hustru Mikal, som jag köpte för hundra döda filistéers förhudar.”
15 Då lät Ish-Boshet hämta henne från hennes man Paltiel, Lajishs son, 16 som gråtande följde henne ända till Bachurim. Där befallde Avner honom att återvända hem och då gjorde han det.
17 Avner hade talat med Israels äldste och sagt: ”Under lång tid har ni önskat att få David till kung. 18 Nu är det dags att handla, för Herren har sagt: ’Det är genom min tjänare David som jag ska rädda mitt folk Israel från filistéerna och alla andra fiender.’ ”
19 Avner talade också med benjaminiterna.[b] Sedan gick han till Hebron och rapporterade för David vad Israel och Benjamins stam kommit fram till.
20 Tjugo män följde med Avner till David i Hebron och David ordnade med en fest för dem.
21 Avner sa till David: ”Jag vill gå och sammankalla hela Israels folk till dig, min herre och kung, så att de ingår förbund med dig, så att du får regera över allt, precis som du i ditt hjärta önskar.”
David lät Avner gå därifrån i lugn och ro.
Joav dödar Avner
22 Davids män och Joav kom just då tillbaka från en plundringsfärd och hade mycket byte med sig. Avner var inte kvar hos David i Hebron, eftersom denne hade låtit honom gå i lugn och ro därifrån. 23 Joav kom med hela sin här och fick reda på att Avner, Ners son, just hade varit hos kungen och fått gå därifrån i lugn och ro. 24 Joav gick in till kungen och sa: ”Vad har du gjort? Här kommer Avner till dig, vad menar du med att bara låta honom gå? 25 Du känner ju Avner, Ners son. Förstår du inte att han kom för att bedra dig och spionera på alla dina förehavanden?”
26 Joav lämnade David och skickade sedan budbärare för att hinna upp Avner. De hann ifatt honom vid Siras brunn och han återvände med dem. Men David visste ingenting om detta.
27 När Avner kom till Hebron, tog Joav honom åt sidan vid stadsporten som om han ville tala med honom i enrum. Men i stället stack han honom ett dödande hugg i magen för att hämnas sin bror Asael.
28 När David fick höra vad som hänt, sa han: ”Herren vet att jag och mitt kungadöme för alltid är oskyldiga till Avners, Ners sons, död. 29 Joav och hans släkt må bära skulden till hans död! Må det i deras släkt från och med nu alltid finnas någon med öppna sår eller spetälska, någon som går på kryckor, någon som faller i strid eller sådana som saknar mat!”
30 Joav och hans bror Avishaj dödade alltså Avner, eftersom han dödat deras bror Asael i slaget vid Givon.
31 Sedan sa David till Joav och alla dem som var med honom: ”Riv sönder era kläder! Ta på er säckkläder och gå framför Avners bår och håll dödsklagan!” Kung David följde också efter båren.
32 De begravde Avner i Hebron och kungen och allt folket grät och sörjde.
33 Kungen sjöng också en klagosång:
”Varför måste Avner dö som en laglös?
34 Dina händer var inte bundna,
dina fötter inte i bojor.
Du föll som man faller för onda män.”
Och allt folket grät än en gång för hans skull.
35 Sedan kom man med mat till David och försökte få honom att äta medan det fortfarande var dag, men han svor: ”Gud må straffa mig både nu och för alltid om jag smakar vare sig bröd eller något annat förrän solen gått ner!” 36 Folket fick snart reda på detta och uppskattade hans handlande. Ja, allt vad David gjorde uppskattades av folket.
37 Den dagen förstod hela folket där och i Israel att David inte på något sätt var skyldig till mordet på Avner, Ners son.
38 David sa till sina män: ”Förstår ni vilken mäktig ledare och stor man som har fallit i Israel i dag? 39 Men jag är alltför svag, även om jag är smord till kung, för att göra något åt de där starka männen, Serujas söner. Herren får straffa de onda för deras onda gärningar!”

Davids söner
3 (A) Kriget mellan Sauls hus och Davids hus[a] blev långvarigt. Under tiden blev David allt starkare, medan Sauls hus blev allt svagare.
2 (B) I Hebron föddes söner åt David. Hans förstfödde var Amnon, som han fick med Ahinoam från Jisreel. 3 (C) Hans andre son var Kilab, som han fick med Abigail, änkan efter karmeliten Nabal. Den tredje var Absalom, son till Maaka som var dotter till Talmaj, kungen i Geshur. 4 Den fjärde var Adonia, Haggits son, och den femte Sefatja, Abitals son. 5 Den sjätte var Jitream, som David fick med sin hustru Egla. Dessa föddes åt David i Hebron.
Abner går över till David
6 Medan kriget varade mellan Sauls hus och Davids hus stärkte Abner sin ställning i Sauls hus.
7 (D) Men Saul hade haft en bihustru vid namn Rispa, dotter till Aja. Och Ish-Boshet sade till Abner: ”Varför har du gått in till min fars bihustru?” 8 Abner blev djupt upprörd över Ish-Boshets ord och sade: ”Är jag ett hundhuvud från Juda land? Här visar jag godhet mot din far Sauls hus, mot hans bröder och hans vänner, och utlämnar dig inte i Davids hand, och så anklagar du mig i dag för en synd med den där kvinnan. 9 (E) Må Gud straffa Abner både nu och i framtiden om jag inte gör så med David som Herren med ed har lovat honom. 10 Jag ska ta kungadömet från Sauls hus och upprätta Davids tron över både Israel och Juda, från Dan till Beer-Sheba.”[b] 11 Då vågade han inte säga ett ord mer till Abner, så rädd var han för honom.
12 Abner skickade sändebud till David och lät säga: ”Vem tillhör landet? Slut förbund med mig, så ska min hand hjälpa dig att få över hela Israel på din sida.” 13 David svarade: ”Bra! Jag vill sluta förbund med dig. Men en sak kräver jag av dig: Du får inte komma hit inför mig utan att föra med dig Sauls dotter Mikal[c] när du kommer för att träda fram inför mig.” 14 (F) Därefter skickade David sändebud till Sauls son Ish-Boshet och lät säga: ”Ge mig min hustru Mikal som jag vann till priset av hundra filisteers förhudar.” 15 (G) Då sände Ish-Boshet bud och lät hämta henne från hennes man Paltiel, son till Laish. 16 Men hennes man gick med henne och följde henne gråtande ända till Bahurim. Där sade Abner till honom: ”Vänd och gå hem igen.” Då vände han tillbaka.
17 Abner hade talat med de äldste i Israel och sagt: ”Ni har länge försökt få David till kung över er. 18 Låt det nu ske, för Herren har sagt om David: Genom min tjänare Davids hand ska jag frälsa mitt folk Israel från filisteerna och från alla deras fiender.” 19 (H) Abner talade också med benjaminiterna. Sedan gick Abner till David i Hebron för att berätta allt som Israel och hela Benjamins hus hade godtagit. 20 Abner kom till David i Hebron, åtföljd av tjugo man, och David ordnade en fest för Abner och hans män. 21 Abner sade till David: ”Jag vill ge mig av och samla hela Israel till min herre kungen, så att de sluter förbund med dig och du kan regera över allt ditt hjärta önskar.” Då lät David Abner gå, och han gav sig av i frid.
Abner dödas av Joab
22 Just då kom Davids folk och Joab tillbaka från ett plundringståg med stort byte. Abner var inte kvar hos David i Hebron längre, för David hade låtit honom gå och han hade gett sig av i frid. 23 När Joab och hela hans här kom berättade man för honom att Abner, Ners son, hade kommit till kungen, som lät honom gå så att han gav sig av i frid. 24 Då gick Joab in till kungen och sade: ”Vad har du gjort? Abner kommer till dig, och du låter honom bara gå härifrån! 25 Du känner Abner, Ners son. Han kom för att bedra dig och få veta alla dina krigsplaner och ta reda på allt du gör.” 26 Joab gick ut från David och sände bud efter Abner, och de fick honom att vända tillbaka vid Sirabrunnen[d]. Men David visste inte om det. 27 (I) När Abner kom tillbaka till Hebron tog Joab honom avsides in i porten för att tala ostört med honom. Där stack han honom i magen så att han dog, som hämnd för sin bror Asaels blod.
28 När David fick höra om det efteråt sade han: ”Jag och mitt kungadöme är för evigt oskyldiga inför Herren till Abners, Ners sons, blod. 29 (J) Låt det komma över Joabs huvud och över hela hans fars hus. Låt det aldrig i Joabs hus saknas män som har flytning eller spetälska eller går på kryckor eller faller för svärd eller saknar bröd.” 30 Så mördade Joab och hans bror Abishaj Abner, därför att han hade dödat deras bror Asael under striden vid Gibeon.
David sörjer Abner
31 David sade till Joab och allt folket som var med honom: ”Riv sönder era kläder och klä er i säcktyg och håll dödsklagan efter Abner.” Och kung David gick själv bakom båren. 32 De begravde Abner i Hebron. Kungen brast i gråt vid Abners grav, och allt folket grät. 33 Och kungen sjöng en sorgesång över Abner:
”Måste Abner dö
en dåres död?
34 Dina händer var inte bundna,
dina fötter var inte slagna i bojor.
Du föll som man faller
för onda män.”
35 Sedan kom de alla för att få David att äta något medan det ännu var dag. Men David svor en ed och sade: ”Må Gud straffa mig både nu och i framtiden om jag smakar bröd eller något annat innan solen går ner!” 36 Hela folket hörde det och gillade det, liksom allt som kungen gjorde gillades av allt folket. 37 Hela folket och hela Israel insåg den dagen att kungen inte hade haft någon del i mordet på Abner, Ners son. 38 Kungen sade till sina tjänare: ”Förstår ni inte att en furste och en stor man har fallit i Israel i dag? 39 (K) Men jag är svag i dag, trots att jag är smord till kung, och de där männen, Serujas söner, är hårdare än jag. Må Herren straffa den som gör ont för hans ondska.”

3 The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time.(A) David grew stronger and stronger,(B) while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.(C)
2 Sons were born to David in Hebron:
His firstborn was Amnon(D) the son of Ahinoam(E) of Jezreel;
3 his second, Kileab the son of Abigail(F) the widow of Nabal of Carmel;
the third, Absalom(G) the son of Maakah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;(H)
4 the fourth, Adonijah(I) the son of Haggith;
the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;
5 and the sixth, Ithream the son of David’s wife Eglah.
These were born to David in Hebron.
Abner Goes Over to David
6 During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner(J) had been strengthening his own position in the house of Saul. 7 Now Saul had had a concubine(K) named Rizpah(L) daughter of Aiah. And Ish-Bosheth said to Abner, “Why did you sleep with my father’s concubine?”
8 Abner was very angry because of what Ish-Bosheth said. So he answered, “Am I a dog’s head(M)—on Judah’s side? This very day I am loyal to the house of your father Saul and to his family and friends. I haven’t handed you over to David. Yet now you accuse me of an offense involving this woman! 9 May God deal with Abner, be it ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the Lord promised(N) him on oath 10 and transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish David’s throne over Israel and Judah from Dan to Beersheba.”(O) 11 Ish-Bosheth did not dare to say another word to Abner, because he was afraid of him.
12 Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to say to David, “Whose land is it? Make an agreement with me, and I will help you bring all Israel over to you.”
13 “Good,” said David. “I will make an agreement with you. But I demand one thing of you: Do not come into my presence unless you bring Michal daughter of Saul when you come to see me.”(P) 14 Then David sent messengers to Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, demanding, “Give me my wife Michal,(Q) whom I betrothed to myself for the price of a hundred Philistine foreskins.”
15 So Ish-Bosheth gave orders and had her taken away from her husband(R) Paltiel(S) son of Laish. 16 Her husband, however, went with her, weeping behind her all the way to Bahurim.(T) Then Abner said to him, “Go back home!” So he went back.
17 Abner conferred with the elders(U) of Israel and said, “For some time you have wanted to make David your king. 18 Now do it! For the Lord promised David, ‘By my servant David I will rescue my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines(V) and from the hand of all their enemies.(W)’”
19 Abner also spoke to the Benjamites in person. Then he went to Hebron to tell David everything that Israel and the whole tribe of Benjamin(X) wanted to do. 20 When Abner, who had twenty men with him, came to David at Hebron, David prepared a feast(Y) for him and his men. 21 Then Abner said to David, “Let me go at once and assemble all Israel for my lord the king, so that they may make a covenant(Z) with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires.”(AA) So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.
Joab Murders Abner
22 Just then David’s men and Joab returned from a raid and brought with them a great deal of plunder. But Abner was no longer with David in Hebron, because David had sent him away, and he had gone in peace. 23 When Joab and all the soldiers with him arrived, he was told that Abner son of Ner had come to the king and that the king had sent him away and that he had gone in peace.
24 So Joab went to the king and said, “What have you done? Look, Abner came to you. Why did you let him go? Now he is gone! 25 You know Abner son of Ner; he came to deceive you and observe your movements and find out everything you are doing.”
26 Joab then left David and sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the cistern at Sirah. But David did not know it. 27 Now when Abner(AB) returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him(AC) in the stomach, and he died.(AD)
28 Later, when David heard about this, he said, “I and my kingdom are forever innocent(AE) before the Lord concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner. 29 May his blood(AF) fall on the head of Joab and on his whole family!(AG) May Joab’s family never be without someone who has a running sore(AH) or leprosy[a] or who leans on a crutch or who falls by the sword or who lacks food.”
30 (Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle at Gibeon.)
31 Then David said to Joab and all the people with him, “Tear your clothes and put on sackcloth(AI) and walk in mourning(AJ) in front of Abner.” King David himself walked behind the bier. 32 They buried Abner in Hebron, and the king wept(AK) aloud at Abner’s tomb. All the people wept also.
33 The king sang this lament(AL) for Abner:
“Should Abner have died as the lawless die?
34 Your hands were not bound,
your feet were not fettered.(AM)
You fell as one falls before the wicked.”
And all the people wept over him again.
35 Then they all came and urged David to eat something while it was still day; but David took an oath, saying, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,(AN) if I taste bread(AO) or anything else before the sun sets!”
36 All the people took note and were pleased; indeed, everything the king did pleased them. 37 So on that day all the people there and all Israel knew that the king had no part(AP) in the murder of Abner son of Ner.
38 Then the king said to his men, “Do you not realize that a commander and a great man has fallen(AQ) in Israel this day? 39 And today, though I am the anointed king, I am weak, and these sons of Zeruiah(AR) are too strong(AS) for me.(AT) May the Lord repay(AU) the evildoer according to his evil deeds!”

Joab Kills Abner

Abner Joins Forces with David
6 Now it was so, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner was strengthening his hold on the house of Saul.
7 And Saul had a concubine, whose name was (G)Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. So Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why have you (H)gone in to my father’s concubine?”
8 Then Abner became very angry at the words of Ishbosheth, and said, “Am I (I)a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show loyalty to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman? 9 (J)May God do so to Abner, and more also, if I do not do for David (K)as the Lord has sworn to him— 10 to transfer the kingdom from the [b]house of Saul, and set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, (L)from Dan to Beersheba.” 11 And he could not answer Abner another word, because he feared him.
12 Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to David, saying, “Whose is the land?” saying also, “Make your covenant with me, and indeed my hand shall be with you to bring all Israel to you.”
13 And David said, “Good, I will make a covenant with you. But one thing I require of you: (M)you shall not see my face unless you first bring (N)Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.” 14 So David sent messengers to (O)Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself (P)for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.” 15 And Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband, from [c]Paltiel the son of Laish. 16 Then her husband went along with her to (Q)Bahurim, [d]weeping behind her. So Abner said to him, “Go, return!” And he returned.
17 Now Abner had communicated with the elders of Israel, saying, “In time past you were seeking for David to be king over you. 18 Now then, do it! (R)For the Lord has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of My servant David, [e]I will save My people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and the hand of all their enemies.’ ” 19 And Abner also spoke in the hearing of (S)Benjamin. Then Abner also went to speak in the hearing of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel and the whole house of Benjamin.
20 So Abner and twenty men with him came to David at Hebron. And David made a feast for Abner and the men who were with him. 21 Then Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and (T)gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may (U)reign over all that your heart desires.” So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.
Joab Murders Abner
22 At that moment the servants of David and Joab came from a raid and brought much [f]spoil with them. But Abner was not with David in Hebron, for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace. 23 When Joab and all the troops that were with him had come, they told Joab, saying, “Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he sent him away, and he has gone in peace.” 24 Then Joab came to the king and said, “What have you done? Look, Abner came to you; why is it that you sent him away, and he has already gone? 25 Surely you realize that Abner the son of Ner came to deceive you, to know (V)your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you are doing.”
26 And when Joab had gone from David’s presence, he sent messengers after Abner, who brought him back from the well of Sirah. But David did not know it. 27 Now when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab (W)took him aside in the gate to speak with him privately, and there [g]stabbed him (X)in the stomach, so that he died for the blood of (Y)Asahel his brother.
28 Afterward, when David heard it, he said, “My kingdom and I are [h]guiltless before the Lord forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner. 29 (Z)Let it rest on the head of Joab and on all his father’s house; and let there never fail to be in the [i]house of Joab one (AA)who has a discharge or is a leper, who leans on a staff or falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.” 30 So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had killed their brother (AB)Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.
David’s Mourning for Abner
31 Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, (AC)“Tear your clothes, (AD)gird yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn for Abner.” And King David followed the coffin. 32 So they buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner, and all the people wept. 33 And the king sang a lament over Abner and said:
“Should Abner die as a (AE)fool dies?
34 Your hands were not bound
Nor your feet put into fetters;
As a man falls before wicked men, so you fell.”
Then all the people wept over him again.
35 And when all the people came (AF)to persuade David to eat food while it was still day, David took an oath, saying, (AG)“God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else (AH)till the sun goes down!” 36 Now all the people took note of it, and it pleased them, since whatever the king did pleased all the people. 37 For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it had not been the king’s intent to kill Abner the son of Ner. 38 Then the king said to his servants, “Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel? 39 And I am weak today, though anointed king; and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, (AI)are too harsh for me. (AJ)The Lord shall repay the evildoer according to his wickedness.”
