20 Där var nu av en händelse en illasinnad man vid namn Seba, Bikris son, en benjaminit. Han blåste i hornet och sade:
"Vi har ingen del i David,
ingen arvslott i Isais son.
Var och en till sitt tält, Israel!"
2 Då övergav alla Israels män David och följde Seba, Bikris son. Men Juda män höll sig till sin kung, från Jordan ända till Jerusalem.
3 David kom nu till sitt palats i Jerusalem, och kungen tog de tio bihustrur som han hade lämnat kvar för att se efter palatset, och satte dem i ett särskilt hus under bevakning. Han gav dem underhåll men gick inte in till dem. Där förblev de instängda till sin död och levde som änkor.
4 Kungen sade till Amasa: "Kalla samman Juda män åt mig inom tre dagar och inställ dig här även du." 5 Amasa gav sig då i väg för att kalla samman Juda. Men när han dröjde över den bestämda tiden, 6 sade David till Abisaj: "Nu kommer Seba, Bikris son, att göra oss mer skada än Absalom. Tag din herres tjänare och sätt efter honom, så att han inte finner några befästa städer och undkommer oss." 7 Så drog Joabs män tillsammans med kereteerna och peleteerna och alla hjältarna ut efter honom. De drog ut från Jerusalem för att sätta efter Seba, Bikris son.
8 När de hade hunnit till den stora stenen vid Gibeon, kom Amasa mot dem. Joab var då klädd i sin vapendräkt, och ovanpå den hade han ett bälte med ett svärd i skidan, fäst vid höften. När han nu gick fram, föll det ut. 9 Joab sade till Amasa: "Är allt väl, min bror?" Och Joab fattade Amasa i skägget med högra handen för att kyssa honom. 10 Då Amasa inte var på sin vakt mot det svärd som Joab hade i handen, gav Joab honom en stöt i buken med det så att hans inälvor rann ut på marken. Så dog han, utan att Joab behövde ge en andra stöt. Sedan fortsatte Joab och hans bror Abisaj att förfölja Seba, Bikris son. 11 En av Joabs män som stod bredvid Amasa ropade: "Var och en som är Joabs vän och står på Davids sida - följ Joab!" 12 Amasa låg badande i sitt blod mitt på vägen. När mannen såg att allt folket stannade, förde han undan Amasa från vägen in på åkern och kastade ett skynke över honom, eftersom han såg att alla som kom förbi stannade. 13 Så snart man hade lyft undan honom från vägen, följde alla efter Joab för att förfölja Seba, Bikris son.
14 Seba drog genom alla Israels stammar till Abel, det vill säga Bet-Maaka, och genom hela Habberim. Och folk samlades och följde honom. 15 Men Joab kom och belägrade honom i Abel Bet-Hammaaka och kastade upp en jordvall mot staden som nådde fram till yttermuren. Allt Joabs folk arbetade på att förstöra muren och få den att falla. 16 Då ropade en klok kvinna från staden: "Lyssna! Lyssna! Säg till Joab att han kommer hit så att jag får tala med honom." 17 När han kom fram till kvinnan frågade hon: "Är du Joab?" Han svarade: "Ja." Hon sade till honom: "Lyssna till din tjänarinnas ord." Han svarade: "Jag lyssnar." 18 Då sade hon: "Förr brukade man säga: 'I Abel skall man fråga till råds.' Sedan blev saken avklarad. 19 Vi är de mest fridsamma och trofasta i Israel, och du försöker fördärva en stad som är en moder i Israel. Varför vill du utplåna Herrens arvedel?" 20 Joab svarade: "Nej aldrig, aldrig, att jag skulle vilja utplåna eller förstöra! 21 Så är det inte. Men en man från Efraims bergsbygd, han heter Seba, Bikris son, har rest sig upp mot kung David. Lämna bara ut honom så skall jag dra bort från staden." Kvinnan svarade Joab: "Hans huvud skall kastas ut till dig över muren." 22 Sedan vände sig kvinnan med sitt kloka råd till allt folket, och de högg huvudet av Seba, Bikris son, och kastade ut det till Joab. Då blåste han i hornet, och de drog bort från staden, var och en till sitt tält. Och Joab vände tillbaka till kungen i Jerusalem.
23 Joab hade nu befälet över hela krigshären i Israel, och Benaja, Jojadas son, hade befälet över kereteerna och peleteerna. 24 Adoram var ansvarig för tvångsarbetena, och Josafat, Ahiluds son, var kansler. 25 Seja var sekreterare, och Sadok och Ebjatar präster. 26 Också jairiten Ira var präst hos David.

The Rebellion of Sheba
20 And there happened to be there a [a]rebel, whose name was Sheba the son of Bichri, a Benjamite. And he blew a trumpet, and said:
(A)“We have no share in David,
Nor do we have inheritance in the son of Jesse;
(B)Every man to his tents, O Israel!”
2 So every man of Israel deserted David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the (C)men of Judah, from the Jordan as far as Jerusalem, remained loyal to their king.
3 Now David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took the ten women, (D)his concubines whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in seclusion and supported them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up to the day of their death, living in widowhood.
4 And the king said to Amasa, (E)“Assemble the men of Judah for me within three days, and be present here yourself.” 5 So Amasa went to assemble the men of Judah. But he delayed longer than the set time which David had appointed him. 6 And David said to (F)Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom. Take (G)your lord’s servants and pursue him, lest he find for himself fortified cities, and escape us.” 7 So Joab’s men, with the (H)Cherethites, the Pelethites, and (I)all the mighty men, went out after him. And they went out of Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri. 8 When they were at the large stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came before them. Now Joab was dressed in battle armor; on it was a belt with a sword fastened in its sheath at his hips; and as he was going forward, it fell out. 9 Then Joab said to Amasa, “Are you in health, my brother?” (J)And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. 10 But Amasa did not notice the sword that was in Joab’s hand. And (K)he struck him with it (L)in the stomach, and his entrails poured out on the ground; and he did not strike him again. Thus he died.
Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri. 11 Meanwhile one of Joab’s men stood near Amasa, and said, “Whoever favors Joab and whoever is for David—follow Joab!” 12 But Amasa wallowed in his blood in the middle of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he moved Amasa from the highway to the field and threw a garment over him, when he saw that everyone who came upon him halted. 13 When he was removed from the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
14 And he went through all the tribes of Israel to (M)Abel and Beth Maachah and all the Berites. So they were gathered together and also went after [b]Sheba. 15 Then they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth Maachah; and they (N)cast up a siege mound against the city, and it stood by the rampart. And all the people who were with Joab battered the wall to throw it down.
16 Then a wise woman cried out from the city, “Hear, hear! Please say to Joab, ‘Come nearby, that I may speak with you.’ ” 17 When he had come near to her, the woman said, “Are you Joab?”
He answered, “I am.”
Then she said to him, “Hear the words of your maidservant.”
And he answered, “I am listening.”
18 So she spoke, saying, “They used to talk in former times, saying, ‘They shall surely seek guidance at Abel,’ and so they would end disputes. 19 I am among the peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up (O)the inheritance of the Lord?”
20 And Joab answered and said, “Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy! 21 That is not so. But a man from the mountains of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has raised his hand against the king, against David. Deliver him only, and I will depart from the city.”
So the woman said to Joab, “Watch, his head will be thrown to you over the wall.” 22 Then the woman (P)in her wisdom went to all the people. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. Then he blew a trumpet, and they withdrew from the city, every man to his tent. So Joab returned to the king at Jerusalem.

23 And (Q)Joab was over all the army of Israel; Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; 24 Adoram was (R)in charge of revenue; (S)Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; 25 Sheva was scribe; (T)Zadok and Abiathar were the priests; 26 (U)and Ira the Jairite was [c]a chief minister under David.

The Rebellion of Sheba
20 Now there happened to be there (A)a worthless man, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite. And he blew the trumpet and said,
(B)“We have no portion in David,
and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse;
(C)every man to his tents, O Israel!”
2 So all the men of Israel withdrew from David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem.
3 And David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took (D)the ten concubines whom he had left to care for the house and put them in a house under guard and provided for them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as if in widowhood.
4 Then the king said to (E)Amasa, “Call the men of Judah together to me within three days, and be here yourself.” 5 So Amasa went to summon Judah, but he delayed beyond the set time that had been appointed him. 6 And David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom. Take (F)your lord's servants and pursue him, lest he get himself to fortified cities and escape from us.”[a] 7 And there went out after him Joab's men and the (G)Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men. They went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri. 8 When they were at the great stone that is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was wearing a soldier's garment, and over it was a belt with a sword in its sheath fastened on his thigh, and as he went forward it fell out. 9 And Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand (H)to kiss him. 10 But Amasa did not observe the sword that was in Joab's hand. (I)So Joab struck him with it (J)in the stomach and spilled his entrails to the ground without striking a second blow, and he died.
Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri. 11 And one of Joab's young men took his stand by Amasa and said, “Whoever favors Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab.” 12 And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the highway. And anyone who came by, seeing him, stopped. And when the man saw that all the people stopped, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field and threw a garment over him. 13 When he was taken out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
14 And Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to (K)Abel of (L)Beth-maacah,[b] and all (M)the Bichrites[c] assembled and followed him in. 15 And all the men who were with Joab came and besieged him in (N)Abel of Beth-maacah. (O)They cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart, and they were battering the wall to throw it down. 16 Then a wise woman called from the city, “Listen! Listen! Tell Joab, ‘Come here, that I may speak to you.’” 17 And he came near her, and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your servant.” And he answered, “I am listening.” 18 Then she said, “They used to say in former times, ‘Let them but ask counsel at (P)Abel,’ and so they settled a matter. 19 I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why will you (Q)swallow up (R)the heritage of the Lord?” 20 Joab answered, “Far be it from me, far be it, that I should (S)swallow up or destroy! 21 That is not true. But a man of (T)the hill country of Ephraim, called Sheba the son of Bichri, has lifted up his hand against King David. Give up him alone, and I will withdraw from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall.” 22 Then the woman went to all the people (U)in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it out to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they dispersed from the city, (V)every man to his home. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.
23 (W)Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the Cherethites and the Pelethites; 24 and (X)Adoram was in charge of the forced labor; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder; 25 and Sheva was secretary; and (Y)Zadok and Abiathar were priests; 26 and (Z)Ira the Jairite was also David's priest.
