David kung över Juda
2 (A) Därefter frågade David Herren: ”Ska jag gå upp till någon av städerna i Juda?” Herren svarade honom: ”Gå.” David frågade: ”Vart ska jag gå?” Han svarade: ”Till Hebron[a].” 2 (B) David drog då dit upp med sina båda hustrur, Ahinoam från Jisreel och Abigail, änkan efter karmeliten Nabal. 3 (C) David tog också med sina män dit upp, var och en med sin familj, och de bosatte sig i Hebrons städer. 4 (D) Och Juda män kom dit och smorde David till kung över Juda hus.
När man berättade för David att det var männen från Jabesh i Gilead som hade begravt Saul, 5 skickade han sändebud till männen i Jabesh i Gilead och lät säga till dem: ”Herren välsigne er som har visat er herre Saul den godheten att begrava honom! 6 Må nu Herren visa nåd och trofasthet mot er. Jag vill också göra gott mot er som har gjort detta. 7 Var nu starka och tappra män, för er herre Saul är död och Juda hus har nu smort mig till kung över dem.”
Ish-Boshet kung över Israel
8 (E) Men Abner[b], Ners son, Sauls överbefälhavare, tog Sauls son Ish-Boshet[c] och förde honom till Mahanajim[d] 9 och gjorde honom till kung över Gilead, ashureerna, Jisreel, Efraim, Benjamin och hela Israel. 10 Sauls son Ish-Boshet var fyrtio år när han blev kung över Israel, och han regerade i två år. Bara Juda hus höll sig till David. 11 (F) Tiden då David var kung i Hebron över Juda hus utgjorde sju år och sex månader.
Krig mellan Israel och Juda
12 Abner, Ners son, drog ut med Sauls son Ish-Boshets folk, från Mahanajim till Gibeon. 13 (G) Joab, Serujas son, och Davids folk tågade också ut. De möttes vid Gibeons damm[e] och intog ställning på var sin sida om dammen. 14 Abner sade till Joab: ”Låt de unga männen komma fram och tävla i en kämpalek inför oss.” Joab svarade: ”De får komma.” 15 Då kom de fram och ställde upp och blev räknade, tolv för Benjamin och Sauls son Ish-Boshet och tolv av Davids tjänare. 16 De grep varandra i huvudet och stack svärdet i sidan[f] på varandra, och alla stupade. Därför kallas platsen Helkat-Hassurim.[g] Den ligger vid Gibeon.
17 Sedan började en mycket hård strid den dagen, och Abner och Israels män blev slagna av Davids folk. 18 Tre av Serujas[h] söner var där: Joab, Abishaj och Asael.[i] Asael var snabbfotad som en gasell på fältet. 19 Han förföljde Abner utan att vika undan vare sig åt höger eller vänster.
20 Då vände Abner sig om och sade: ”Är det du, Asael?” Han svarade: ”Ja.” 21 Då sade Abner till honom: ”Vik av åt höger eller vänster, angrip någon av de yngre och ta hans rustning.” Men Asael ville inte låta honom vara. 22 Då sade Abner än en gång till Asael: ”Låt mig vara! Varför ska jag slå ner dig? Hur ska jag sedan kunna se din bror Joab i ansiktet?” 23 (H) Men han vägrade låta honom vara, så Abner stötte honom med bakänden av sitt spjut[j] i buken, och spjutet gick ut genom ryggen. Han föll ner och dog där på stället. Och var och en som kom till platsen där Asael hade fallit och dött stannade upp.
24 Men Joab och Abishaj förföljde Abner. När solen gick ner och de kom till Ammahöjden, som ligger mitt emot Gia på vägen mot Gibeons öken, 25 samlades Benjamins barn bakom Abner till en enda skara och gick i ställning på toppen av en och samma höjd. 26 Abner ropade till Joab: ”Ska svärdet få fortsätta frossa? Förstår du inte att det får ett bittert slut? Hur länge ska det dröja innan du befaller ditt folk att sluta förfölja sina bröder?” 27 Joab svarade: ”Så sant Gud lever: Hade du inte sagt något, skulle folket ha fortsatt förfölja sina bröder till morgonen.” 28 Sedan blåste Joab i basunen, och allt folket gjorde halt. De förföljde inte Israel längre och fortsatte inte att strida.
29 Abner och hans män tågade genom Hedmarken hela den natten. De gick över Jordan och fortsatte hela förmiddagen[k] och kom så till Mahanajim. 30 När Joab slutade förfölja Abner och samlade folket saknades nitton av Davids män förutom Asael. 31 Men Davids män hade dödat trehundrasextio man av Benjamins och Abners folk. 32 De tog med sig Asael och begravde honom i hans fars grav i Betlehem. Därefter marscherade Joab och hans män hela natten och kom i gryningen till Hebron.

2 And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the Lord said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
2 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal's wife the Carmelite.
3 And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.
4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that buried Saul.
5 And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabeshgilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the Lord, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.
6 And now the Lord shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.
7 Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.
8 But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;
9 And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
10 Ishbosheth Saul's son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
12 And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
14 And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.
15 Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
16 And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkathhazzurim, which is in Gibeon.
17 And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
18 And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.
19 And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.
20 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.
21 And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
22 And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?
23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
24 Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
25 And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.
26 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?
27 And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.
28 So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
29 And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.
30 And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David's servants nineteen men and Asahel.
31 But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.
32 And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Bethlehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.

2 It happened after this that David (A)inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up to any of the cities of Judah?”
And the Lord said to him, “Go up.”
David said, “Where shall I go up?”
And He said, “To (B)Hebron.”
2 So David went up there, and his (C)two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite. 3 And David brought up (D)the men who were with him, every man with his household. So they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.
4 (E)Then the men of Judah came, and there they (F)anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, (G)“The men of Jabesh Gilead were the ones who buried Saul.” 5 So David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, (H)“You are blessed of the Lord, for you have shown this kindness to your lord, to Saul, and have buried him. 6 And now may (I)the Lord show kindness and truth to you. I also will repay you this kindness, because you have done this thing. 7 Now therefore, let your hands be strengthened, and be valiant; for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”
Ishbosheth Made King of Israel
8 But (J)Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, took [a]Ishbosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to (K)Mahanaim; 9 and he made him king over (L)Gilead, over the (M)Ashurites, over (N)Jezreel, over Ephraim, over Benjamin, and over all Israel. 10 Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. Only the house of Judah followed David. 11 And (O)the [b]time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
Israel and Judah at War
12 Now Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to (P)Gibeon. 13 And (Q)Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out and met them by (R)the pool of Gibeon. So they sat down, one on one side of the pool and the other on the other side of the pool. 14 Then Abner said to Joab, “Let the young men now arise and compete before us.”
And Joab said, “Let them arise.”
15 So they arose and went over by number, twelve from Benjamin, followers of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve from the servants of David. 16 And each one grasped his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his opponent’s side; so they fell down together. Therefore that place was called [c]the Field of Sharp Swords, which is in Gibeon. 17 So there was a very fierce battle that day, and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten before the servants of David.
18 Now the (S)three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab and Abishai and Asahel. And Asahel was (T)as fleet of foot (U)as a wild gazelle. 19 So Asahel pursued Abner, and in going he did not turn to the right hand or to the left from following Abner.
20 Then Abner looked behind him and said, “Are you Asahel?”
He answered, “I am.”
21 And Abner said to him, “Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and lay hold on one of the young men and take his armor for yourself.” But Asahel would not turn aside from following him. 22 So Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn aside from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I face your brother Joab?” 23 However, he refused to turn aside. Therefore Abner struck him (V)in the stomach with the blunt end of the spear, so that the spear came out of his back; and he fell down there and died on the spot. So it was that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died, stood (W)still.
24 Joab and Abishai also pursued Abner. And the sun was going down when they came to the hill of Ammah, which is before Giah by the road to the Wilderness of Gibeon. 25 Now the children of Benjamin gathered together behind Abner and became [d]a unit, and took their stand on top of a hill. 26 Then Abner called to Joab and said, “Shall the sword devour forever? Do you not know that it will be bitter in the latter end? How long will it be then until you tell the people to return from pursuing their brethren?”
27 And Joab said, “As God lives, [e]unless (X)you had spoken, surely then by morning all the people would have given up pursuing their brethren.” 28 So Joab blew a trumpet; and all the people stood still and did not pursue Israel anymore, nor did they fight anymore. 29 Then Abner and his men went on all that night through the plain, crossed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron; and they came to Mahanaim.
30 So Joab returned from pursuing Abner. And when he had gathered all the people together, there were missing of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel. 31 But the servants of David had struck down, of Benjamin and Abner’s men, three hundred and sixty men who died. 32 Then they took up Asahel and buried him in his father’s tomb, which was in (Y)Bethlehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at daybreak.

2 David spurgte nu Herren: „Skal jeg rejse tilbage til Judas land?”
Herren svarede: „Ja!”
„Hvilken by skal jeg slå mig ned i?”
„Hebron,” svarede Herren.
2 Så tog David sine koner, Ahinoam fra Jizre’el, og Abigajil, Nabals enke fra Karmel, 3 samt sine trofaste mænd med deres familier, og de bosatte sig i Hebron og omegn. 4 Derefter kom Judas ledere til David og salvede ham til konge over Juda.
Da David fik at vide, at indbyggerne i Jabesh i Gilead havde begravet Saul, 5 sendte han dem følgende budskab: „Må Herren velsigne jer, fordi I har været trofaste overfor jeres konge ved at give ham en anstændig begravelse. 6 Må Herren i sin trofasthed belønne jer for jeres storsind. Men også jeg vil gøre godt imod jer, fordi I gjorde dette. 7 Selvom Saul nu er død, må I ikke lade hænderne synke eller tabe modet. Judas stamme har allerede udråbt mig til konge.”
Ishboshet bliver konge over Nordriget
8 Men Abner, Sauls hærfører, bragte Sauls søn, Ishboshet, til Mahanajim og udråbte ham til konge over Nordriget. 9 Han kom til at regere over Gilead, Asher, Jizre’el, Efraim og Benjamins stamme, ja, hele Israel[a] bortset fra Judas område.
10-11 Ishboshet var 40 år gammel, da han blev konge, og han regerede ud fra Mahanajim i to år. David regerede over Judas land i syv et halvt år fra Hebron.
Krigen mellem David og Ishboshet
12 En dag tog Abner nogle af Ishboshets mænd med sig fra Mahanajim og kom til Gibeon. 13 Davids hærfører, Joab, Zerujas søn, gik dem i møde med nogle af Davids mænd. De to hære slog lejr på hver sin side af Gibeondammen. 14 Da foreslog Abner, at de unge krigere skulle åbne slaget med tvekamp. Joab gik med på idéen, 15 hvorefter man udpegede 12 mænd fra Benjamins stamme til at kæmpe for Ishboshet og 12 fra Judas stamme til at kæmpe for David. 16 Opgaven gik ud på at gribe modstanderen i håret og støde sværdet i siden på ham. På den måde blev samtlige 24 mænd dræbt. Siden har man kaldt dette sted ved Gibeon for „Sværdkampens mark”.
17 Derefter gik de to hære løs på hinanden med det resultat, at Abner samme dag måtte erkende sit nederlag til Joab og Davids mænd og tage flugten. 18 Joabs brødre, Abishaj og Asael, deltog også i slaget. Da Asael var hurtigløber, 19 satte han efter Abner uden at lade sig distrahere af noget som helst undervejs.
20 Da Abner så sig tilbage, var Asael ved at hale ind på ham. „Er det dig, Asael?” råbte Abner.
„Ja, det er!” svarede Asael.
21 „Find et andet offer!” råbte Abner advarende. „Der er nok af unge krigere, du kan afvæbne!” Men Asael ville have fat i Abner.
22 Da råbte Abner: „Hold op med at forfølge mig! Hvis jeg slår dig ihjel, vil jeg aldrig kunne se din bror Joab i øjnene igen!”
23 Asael lod sig imidlertid ikke ryste af. Pludselig standsede Abner, jog sit spyd bagud og ramte sin forfølger i maven med en sådan kraft, at spydspidsen kom ud på den anden side. Da styrtede Asael omkuld og døde, og alle, som kom til stedet, hvor han lå, standsede op for at kigge på ham.
24 Nu satte både Joab og Abishaj efter Abner, og ved solnedgang nåede de frem til Amma-højen øst for Gia ved vejen til Gibeons ørken. 25 På toppen af højen samlede alle krigerne fra Benjamins stamme sig bag Abner, 26 og Abner råbte ned til Joab: „Skal vi blive ved med at dræbe hinanden? Hvor længe skal det vare, før du befaler dine mænd at holde op med at jagte deres landsmænd?”
27 Joab råbte tilbage: „Jeg sværger ved den levende Gud, at hvis du ikke havde sagt noget, ville vi have jagtet jer til i morgen tidlig!” 28 Så afblæste han forfølgelsen, og mændene standsede kampen.
29 Samme nat begav Abner og hans mænd sig på hjemvejen. De gik op gennem Jordandalen, krydsede floden og nåede næste morgen frem til Mahanajim. 30 Også Joab og hans mænd vendte hjem. Da Joab opgjorde tabene, fandt han ud af, at ud over Asael manglede der kun 19 mand, 31 hvorimod Abner havde mistet 360 mand, alle af Benjamins stamme. 32 Joab og hans mænd bar Asaels lig til Betlehem og begravede ham ved hans fars side. Derefter gik de hele natten og nåede frem til Hebron ved daggry.
