Natan anklagar David
12 Herren sände Natan till David. När han kom dit sa han:
”Två män bodde i samma stad, den ene rik och den andre fattig. 2 Den rike ägde många får och stora boskapshjordar. 3 Den fattige ägde inget annat än ett litet lamm som han hade köpt och fött upp. Lammet växte upp hos honom och bland barnen i familjen. Han gav det av sin egen mat och han lät det dricka ur sin egen mugg och det låg i hans famn som om det varit hans egen lilla dotter. 4 Nu kom det en gäst till den rike mannens hem, men i stället för att slakta ett djur från sina egna hjordar till middag åt gästen, tog han den fattige mannens lamm och lagade till det.”
5 David blev rasande och sa till Natan: ”Så sant Herren lever, den man som gjort något sådant förtjänar döden! 6 Dessutom ska han ersätta lammet fyrdubbelt[a], eftersom han gjorde detta och var så obarmhärtig.”
7 Då sa Natan till David: ”Du är den mannen! Herren, Israels Gud, säger: ’Jag smorde dig till kung över Israel och räddade dig undan Saul. 8 Jag gav dig din herres kungadöme och hans hustrur i dina armar[b] och jag gav dig hela Israel och Juda. Om det inte hade varit tillräckligt, så skulle jag ha gett dig ännu mycket mer. 9 Varför har du då föraktat Herrens ord och gjort något så ont? Du har mördat Uria med svärd och tagit hans hustru. Du lät ammoniterna döda honom med svärd. 10 Från och med nu ska ett hotande svärd alltid hänga över din familj. Genom att ta Urias hustru har du visat ditt förakt för mig.’
11 Så säger Herren: ’För den här sakens skull ska jag se till att din egen familj blir din olycka. Ja, jag ska överlämna dina hustrur åt en annan man, en som står dig nära och han kommer att ligga med dem mitt på ljusa dagen. 12 Det du gjorde i hemlighet, det ska jag låta ske mot dig i dagsljus inför hela Israel.’ ”
13 ”Jag har syndat mot Herren”, bekände David. Natan svarade: ”Ja, och Herren förlåter dig. Du behöver inte dö. 14 Men du har gett Herrens fiender tillfälle att förakta honom och därför kommer ditt barn att dö.”
Davids och Batsebas barn dör
15 Sedan återvände Natan hem. Och Herren lät barnet som Urias hustru födde åt David bli svårt sjukt. 16 David bad Gud om att han skulle skona barnet. Han åt ingenting. Han gick hem och om nätterna låg han på bara marken. 17 De högsta tjänstemännen i palatset försökte få honom att stiga upp från marken och äta tillsammans med dem, men han vägrade. 18 När sju dagar hade gått dog barnet. Davids tjänare var rädda för att tala om det för honom.
”Han var alldeles utom sig när pojken var sjuk”, sa de. ”Vad ska han nu ta sig till när vi berättar att han har dött?”
19 Men när David såg att de viskade till varandra, förstod han vad som hänt. ”Har barnet dött?” frågade han. ”Ja, han är död”, svarade de. 20 Då reste sig David från marken, tvättade sig, smorde in sig med olja och bytte kläder. Sedan gick han in i Herrens hus och tillbad. Efter det återvände han till palatset, bad om mat och åt när de serverade åt honom. 21 Hans tjänare undrade varför han betedde sig så. De sa till honom: ”Medan barnet fortfarande levde, grät du och vägrade att äta, men nu när barnet har dött, går du upp och börjar äta som vanligt.”
22 David svarade: ”Jag fastade och grät medan barnet levde, för jag tänkte: ’Vem vet, kanske kommer Herren att vara barmhärtig mot mig och låta pojken leva.’ 23 Men varför ska jag fasta nu när han är död? Kan jag någonsin få honom tillbaka? En dag ska jag gå till honom, men han kommer aldrig tillbaka till mig.”
24 David tröstade Batseba. Han gick in till henne och låg med henne. Och hon födde en son som han kallade Salomo. Herren älskade det barnet 25 och lät hälsa genom profeten Natan att han för Herrens skull skulle kallas Jedidjah, Herrens älskade.
David besegrar ammoniterna
(1 Krön 20:1-3)
26 Joav anföll Rabba i Ammon och intog kungastaden[c]. 27 Joav skickade detta meddelande till David: ”Jag har anfallit Rabba och intagit vattenstaden. 28 Mönstra nu resten av armén och belägra och inta staden! Annars gör jag det och då får den bära mitt namn.”
29 Då mönstrade David hela sin armé och tågade mot Rabba. Han anföll staden och intog den. 30 David tog kronan från Milkoms[d] huvud. Den var gjord av guld, prydd med infattade dyrbara stenar och vägde över 30 kilo. Den sattes på Davids huvud. Han tog också en stor mängd krigsbyte från staden. 31 Befolkningen där satte han i arbete med sågar, järnhackor och yxor eller med att tillverka tegelsten som han brukade göra med alla ammonitiska städer. Sedan återvände David och armén till Jerusalem.

12 Och HERREN sände Natan till David. När han kom in till honom, sade han till honom: »Två män bodde i samma stad; den ene var rik och den andre fattig.
2 Den rike hade får och fäkreatur i stor myckenhet.
3 Men den fattige hade icke mer än ett enda litet lamm, som han hade köpt; han uppfödde det, och det växte upp hos honom och hans söner, tillsammans med dem: det åt av hans brödstycke och drack ur hans bägare och låg i hans famn och var för honom såsom en dotter.
4 Så kom en vägfarande till den rike mannen; då nändes han icke taga av sina får och fäkreatur för att tillreda åt den resande som hade kommit till honom, utan han tog den fattige mannens lamm och tillredde det åt mannen som hade kommit till honom.»
5 Då upptändes Davids vrede storligen mot den mannen, och han sade till Natan: »Så sant HERREN lever: dödens barn är den man som har gjort detta.
6 Och lammet skall han ersätta fyradubbelt, därför att han gjorde sådant, och eftersom han var så obarmhärtig.»
7 Men Natan sade till David: »Du är den mannen. Så säger HERREN, Israels Gud: Jag har smort dig till konung över Israel, och jag har räddat dig ur Sauls hand.
8 Jag har givit dig din herres hus och lagt din herres hustrur i din famn; ja jag har givit dig Israels hus och Juda. Och om detta skulle vara för litet, så vore jag villig att ytterligare giva dig både ett och annat.
9 Varför har du då föraktat HERRENS ord och gjort vad ont är i hans ögon? Hetiten Uria har du låtit slå ihjäl med svärd, och hans hustru har du tagit till hustru åt dig själv; ja, honom har du dräpt med Ammons barns svärd.
10 Så skall nu icke heller svärdet vika ifrån ditt hus till evig tid, därför att du har föraktat mig och tagit hetiten Urias hustru till hustru åt dig.
11 Så säger HERREN: Se, jag skall låta olyckor komma över dig från ditt eget hus, och jag skall taga dina hustrur inför dina ögon och giva dem åt en annan, och han skall ligga hos dina hustrur mitt på ljusa dagen.
12 Ty väl har du gjort sådant i hemlighet, men jag vill låta detta ske inför hela Israel, och det på ljusa dagen.»
13 Då sade David till Natan: »Jag har syndat mot HERREN.» Natan sade till David: »Så har ock HERREN tillgivit dig din synd; du skall icke dö.
14 Men eftersom du genom denna gärning har kommit HERRENS fiender att förakta honom, skall ock den son som har blivit född åt dig döden dö.»
15 Sedan gick Natan hem igen. Och HERREN slog barnet som Urias hustru hade fött åt David, han slog det, så att det blev dödssjukt.
16 Då sökte David Gud för gossens skull; och David höll fasta, och när han kom hem, låg han på bara marken över natten.
17 Då stodo de äldste i hans hus upp och gingo till honom, för att förmå honom att stiga upp från marken; men han ville icke, och han åt icke heller något med dem.
18 Men på sjunde dagen dog barnet. Då fruktade Davids tjänare att om tala för honom att barnet hade dött, ty de tänkte: »När vi talade till honom, medan barnet ännu levde, ville han ju icke lyssna till våra ord. Huru skulle vi då kunna säga till honom att barnet har dött? Han kunde göra något ont.»
19 Men när David såg att hans tjänare viskade med varandra, förstod han att barnet hade dött. Då frågade David sina tjänare: »Har barnet dött?» De svarade: »Ja.»
20 Då stod David upp från marken och tvådde sig och smorde sig och bytte om kläder och gick in i HERRENS hus och tillbad. Och när han kom hem igen, begärde han att man skulle sätta fram mat åt honom, och han åt.
21 Då sade hans tjänare till honom: »Varför gör du på detta sätt? Medan barnet levde, fastade du och grät för dess skull; men så snart barnet har dött, står du upp och äter!»
22 Han svarade: så länge barnet ännu levde, fastade och grät jag, ty jag tänkte: 'Vem vet, kanhända bliver HERREN mig nådig och låter barnet få leva.'
23 Men nu, när det har dött, varför skulle jag då fasta? Kan jag väl skaffa honom tillbaka igen? Jag går bort till honom, men han kommer icke tillbaka till mig.»
24 Och David tröstade sin hustru Bat-Seba och gick in till henne och låg hos henne. Och hon födde en son, åt vilken han gav namnet Salomo. Och HERREN älskade honom
25 och sände ett budskap med profeten Natan, och denne gav honom namnet Jedidja, för HERRENS skull.
26 Och Joab angrep Rabba i Ammons barns land och intog konungastaden.
27 Sedan sände Joab bud till David och lät säga honom: »Jag har angripit Rabba och har redan intagit Vattenstaden.
28 Så församla du nu det övriga folket och belägra staden och intag den, så att det icke bliver jag som intager staden och får bära namnet därför.»
29 Då församlade David allt folket och tågade till Rabba och angrep det och intog det.
30 Och han tog deras konungs krona från hans huvud; den vägde en talent guld och var prydd med en dyrbar sten. Den sattes nu på Davids huvud. Och han förde ut byte från staden i stor myckenhet.
31 Och folket därinne förde han ut och lade dem under sågar och tröskvagnar av järn och bilor av järn och överlämnade dem åt Molok. Så gjorde han mot Ammons barns alla städer. Sedan vände David med allt folket tillbaka till Jerusalem.

Nathan Rebukes David(A)
12 The Lord sent Nathan(B) to David.(C) When he came to him,(D) he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, 3 but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.
4 “Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.”
5 David(E) burned with anger(F) against the man(G) and said to Nathan, “As surely as the Lord lives,(H) the man who did this must die! 6 He must pay for that lamb four times over,(I) because he did such a thing and had no pity.”
7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man!(J) This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed(K) you(L) king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. 8 I gave your master’s house to you,(M) and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. 9 Why did you despise(N) the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down(O) Uriah(P) the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed(Q) him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now, therefore, the sword(R) will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’
11 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Out of your own household(S) I am going to bring calamity on you.(T) Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight.(U) 12 You did it in secret,(V) but I will do this thing in broad daylight(W) before all Israel.’”
13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned(X) against the Lord.”
Nathan replied, “The Lord has taken away(Y) your sin.(Z) You are not going to die.(AA) 14 But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for[a] the Lord,(AB) the son born to you will die.”
15 After Nathan had gone home, the Lord struck(AC) the child that Uriah’s wife had borne to David, and he became ill. 16 David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and spent the nights lying(AD) in sackcloth[b] on the ground. 17 The elders of his household stood beside him to get him up from the ground, but he refused,(AE) and he would not eat any food with them.(AF)
18 On the seventh day the child died. David’s attendants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they thought, “While the child was still living, he wouldn’t listen to us when we spoke to him. How can we now tell him the child is dead? He may do something desperate.”
19 David noticed that his attendants were whispering among themselves, and he realized the child was dead. “Is the child dead?” he asked.
“Yes,” they replied, “he is dead.”
20 Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed,(AG) put on lotions and changed his clothes,(AH) he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate.
21 His attendants asked him, “Why are you acting this way? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept,(AI) but now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!”
22 He answered, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, ‘Who knows?(AJ) The Lord may be gracious to me and let the child live.’(AK) 23 But now that he is dead, why should I go on fasting? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him,(AL) but he will not return to me.”(AM)
24 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba,(AN) and he went to her and made love to her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon.(AO) The Lord loved him; 25 and because the Lord loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah.[c](AP)
26 Meanwhile Joab fought against Rabbah(AQ) of the Ammonites and captured the royal citadel. 27 Joab then sent messengers to David, saying, “I have fought against Rabbah and taken its water supply. 28 Now muster the rest of the troops and besiege the city and capture it. Otherwise I will take the city, and it will be named after me.”
29 So David mustered the entire army and went to Rabbah, and attacked and captured it. 30 David took the crown(AR) from their king’s[d] head, and it was placed on his own head. It weighed a talent[e] of gold, and it was set with precious stones. David took a great quantity of plunder from the city 31 and brought out the people who were there, consigning them to labor with saws and with iron picks and axes, and he made them work at brickmaking.[f] David did this to all the Ammonite(AS) towns. Then he and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.

Nathan Condemns David
12 And the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, “There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds; 3 but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children; it used to eat of his morsel, and drink from his cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was like a daughter to him. 4 Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but he took the poor man’s lamb, and prepared it for the man who had come to him.” 5 Then David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die; 6 and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.”
7 Nathan said to David, “You are the man. Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul; 8 and I gave you your master’s house, and your master’s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if this were too little, I would add to you as much more. 9 Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have smitten Uri′ah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uri′ah the Hittite to be your wife.’ 11 Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12 For you did it secretly; but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.’” 13 David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die. 14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord,[a] the child that is born to you shall die.” 15 Then Nathan went to his house.
Bathsheba’s Child Dies
And the Lord struck the child that Uri′ah’s wife bore to David, and it became sick. 16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in and lay all night upon the ground. 17 And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground; but he would not, nor did he eat food with them. 18 On the seventh day the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he did not listen to us; how then can we say to him the child is dead? He may do himself some harm.” 19 But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.” 20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the Lord, and worshiped; he then went to his own house; and when he asked, they set food before him, and he ate. 21 Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while it was alive; but when the child died, you arose and ate food.” 22 He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who knows whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ 23 But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”
Solomon Is Born
24 Then David comforted his wife, Bathshe′ba, and went in to her, and lay with her; and she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. And the Lord loved him, 25 and sent a message by Nathan the prophet; so he called his name Jedidi′ah,[b] because of the Lord.
The Ammonites Crushed
26 Now Jo′ab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites, and took the royal city. 27 And Jo′ab sent messengers to David, and said, “I have fought against Rabbah; moreover, I have taken the city of waters. 28 Now, then, gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called by my name.” 29 So David gathered all the people together and went to Rabbah, and fought against it and took it. 30 And he took the crown of their king[c] from his head; the weight of it was a talent of gold, and in it was a precious stone; and it was placed on David’s head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city, a very great amount. 31 And he brought forth the people who were in it, and set them to labor with saws and iron picks and iron axes, and made them toil at[d] the brickkilns; and thus he did to all the cities of the Ammonites. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
