David besegrar araméerna
(1 Krön 19:1-19)
10 En tid därefter dog Ammons kung och hans son Hanun efterträdde honom.
2 ”Jag vill visa min vänskap mot Hanun, eftersom hans far visade mig vänskap”, tänkte David och sände budbärare för att beklaga hans fars död. Men när Davids sändebud kom till ammoniternas land, 3 sa de ammonitiska furstarna till honom: ”Låt inte lura dig att David har skickat hit de där männen med tröst för din fars skull! De har kommit för att spionera på staden[a] och spana för att de ska kunna inta den.”
4 Hanun grep då Davids sändebud, lät raka av dem halva skägget och klippa av nedre hälften av deras kläder, innan han skickade iväg dem. 5 När David hörde vad som hänt, skickade han män för att möta dem eftersom de hade blivit så kränkta och uppmanade dem att stanna kvar i Jeriko tills skägget hade vuxit ut och sedan komma tillbaka.
6 När ammoniterna förstod att de hade gjort sig förhatliga för David, sände de bud och lejde 20 000 arameiska män från Bet-Rechov och Sova. Kungen i Maaka ställde upp med 1 000 man och 12 000 kom från Tov.
7 När David fick höra detta, skickade han ut Joav med hela hären, elittrupperna. 8 Ammoniterna ställde upp utanför stadsporten, medan araméerna från Rechov och Sova och männen från Maaka och Tov grupperade sig i det öppna landskapet. 9 När Joav insåg att han hade fientliga styrkor både framför och bakom sig, valde han ut de bästa krigarna i Israel och ställde upp dem mot araméerna. 10 Resten av armén överlämnade han åt sin bror Avishaj, och de ställde upp sig mot ammoniterna.
11 Joav sa: ”Om araméerna är för starka för mig, får du komma och rädda mig. Och om ammoniterna är för starka för dig, kommer jag och räddar dig. 12 Var stark och modig och låt oss kämpa tappert för vårt folk och för vår Guds städer! Sedan gör Herren vad han finner vara bäst.”
13 När Joav och hans soldater anföll araméerna, flydde de för honom. 14 När ammoniterna såg att araméerna flydde, flydde de för Avishaj in i staden. Joav lämnade dem då i fred och återvände till Jerusalem.
15 Men när araméerna insåg att de hade blivit besegrade av Israel, grupperade de om sina styrkor. 16 Hadadeser sände då bud efter araméer från andra sidan floden Eufrat. De kom till Helam under befäl av Shovak, överbefälhavaren över Hadadesers här.
17 Då David fick höra detta, samlade han hela Israels armé och tågade över Jordan till Helam. Där ställde araméerna upp och gav sig i strid med David. 18 De flydde för Israel, och David dödade 700 stridsvagnssoldater och 40 000 ryttare. Överbefälhavare Shovak slogs också ner och dog där. 19 När Hadadesers alla lydkungar insåg att de blivit slagna av Israel, slöt de fred med Israel och blev deras undersåtar.
Araméerna ville sedan inte längre hjälpa ammoniterna.

10 Und es begab sich darnach, daß der König der Kinder Ammon starb, und sein Sohn Hanun ward König an seiner Statt.
2 Da sprach David: Ich will Barmherzigkeit tun an Hanun, dem Sohn Nahas, wie sein Vater an mir Barmherzigkeit getan hat. Und sandte hin und ließ ihn trösten durch seine Knechte über seinen Vater. Da nun die Knechte Davids ins Land der Kinder Ammon kamen,
3 sprachen die Gewaltigen der Kinder Ammon zu ihrem Herrn, Hanun: Meinst du, daß David deinen Vater ehren wolle, daß er Tröster zu dir gesandt hat? Meinst du nicht, daß er darum hat seine Knechte zu dir gesandt, daß er die Stadt erforsche und erkunde und umkehre?
4 Da nahm Hanun die Knechte David und schor ihnen den Bart halb und schnitt ihnen die Kleider halb ab bis an den Gürtel und ließ sie gehen.
5 Da das David ward angesagt, sandte er ihnen entgegen; denn die Männer waren sehr geschändet. Und der König ließ ihnen sagen: Bleibt zu Jericho, bis euer Bart gewachsen; so kommt dann wieder.
6 Da aber die Kinder Ammon sahen, daß sie vor David stinkend geworden waren, sandten sie hin und dingten die Syrer des Hauses Rehob und die Syrer zu Zoba, zwanzigtausend Mann Fußvolk, und von dem König Maachas tausend Mann und von Is-Tob zwölftausend Mann.
7 Da das David hörte, sandte er Joab mit dem ganzen Heer der Kriegsleute.
8 Und die Kinder Ammon zogen aus und rüsteten sich zum Streit vor dem Eingang des Tors. Die Syrer aber von Zoba, von Rehob, von Is-Tob und von Maacha waren allein im Felde.
9 Da Joab nun sah, daß der Streit auf ihn gestellt war vorn und hinten, erwählte er aus aller jungen Mannschaft in Israel und stellte sich wider die Syrer.
10 Und das übrige Volk tat er unter die Hand seines Bruders Abisai, daß er sich rüstete wider dir Kinder Ammon,
11 und sprach: Werden mir die Syrer überlegen sein, so komm mir zu Hilfe; werden aber die Kinder Ammon dir überlegen sein, so will ich dir zu Hilfe kommen.
12 Sei getrost und laß uns stark sein für unser Volk und für die Städte unsers Gottes; der HERR aber tue, was ihm gefällt.
13 Und Joab machte sich herzu mit dem Volk, das bei ihm war, zu streiten wider die Syrer; und sie flohen vor ihm.
14 Und da die Kinder Ammon sahen, daß die Syrer flohen, flohen sie auch vor Abisai und zogen in die Stadt. Also kehrte Joab um von den Kindern Ammon und kam gen Jerusalem.
15 Und da die Syrer sahen, daß sie geschlagen waren vor Israel, kamen sie zuhauf.
16 Und Hadadeser sandte hin und brachte heraus die Syrer jenseit des Stromes und führte herein ihre Macht; und Sobach, der Feldhauptmann Hadadesers, zog vor ihnen her.
17 Da das David ward angesagt, sammelte er zuhauf das ganze Israel und zog über den Jordan und kam gen Helam. Und die Syrer stellten sich wider David, mit ihm zu streiten.
18 Aber die Syrer flohen vor Israel. Und David verderbte der Syrer siebenhundert Wagen und vierzigtausend Reiter; dazu Sobach, den Feldhauptmann, schlug er, daß er daselbst starb.
19 Da aber die Könige, die unter Hadadeser waren, sahen, daß sie geschlagen waren vor Israel, machten sie Frieden mit Israel und wurden ihnen untertan. Und die Syrer fürchteten sich, den Kindern Ammon mehr zu helfen.

10 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.
2 Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.
3 And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?
4 Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
5 When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men.
7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
8 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ishtob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.
9 When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:
10 And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.
11 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
12 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the Lord do that which seemeth him good.
13 And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
15 And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.
16 And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.
18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.
19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

10 It happened after this that the (B)king of the people of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. 2 Then David said, “I will show (C)kindness to Hanun the son of (D)Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.”
So David sent by the hand of his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the people of Ammon. 3 And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Has David not rather sent his servants to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?”
4 Therefore Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off half of their beards, cut off their garments in the middle, (E)at their buttocks, and sent them away. 5 When they told David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly [a]ashamed. And the king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”
6 When the people of Ammon saw that they (F)had made themselves repulsive to David, the people of Ammon sent and hired (G)the Syrians of (H)Beth Rehob and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand foot soldiers; and from the king of (I)Maacah one thousand men, and from (J)Ish-Tob twelve thousand men. 7 Now when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of (K)the mighty men. 8 Then the people of Ammon came out and put themselves in battle array at the entrance of the gate. And (L)the Syrians of Zoba, Beth Rehob, Ish-Tob, and Maacah were by themselves in the field.
9 When Joab saw that the battle line was against him before and behind, he chose some of Israel’s best and put them in battle array against the Syrians. 10 And the rest of the people he put under the command of (M)Abishai his brother, that he might set them in battle array against the people of Ammon. 11 Then he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. 12 (N)Be of good courage, and let us (O)be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. And may (P)the Lord do what is good in His sight.”
13 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near for the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. 14 When the people of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fleeing, they also fled before Abishai, and entered the city. So Joab returned from the people of Ammon and went to (Q)Jerusalem.
15 When the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered together. 16 Then [b]Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond [c]the River, and they came to Helam. And [d]Shobach the commander of Hadadezer’s army went before them. 17 When it was told David, he gathered all Israel, crossed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in battle array against David and fought with him. 18 Then the Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven hundred charioteers and forty thousand (R)horsemen of the Syrians, and struck Shobach the commander of their army, who died there. 19 And when all the kings who were servants to [e]Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and (S)served them. So the Syrians were afraid to help the people of Ammon anymore.
