4 David captured a thousand of his chariots, seven thousand charioteers[a] and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He hamstrung(A) all but a hundred of the chariot horses.
5 When the Arameans of Damascus(B) came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand of them. 6 He put garrisons(C) in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject(D) to him and brought tribute. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.(E)

4 David took from him one thousand chariots, [a]seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers. Also David (A)hamstrung all the chariot horses, except that he spared enough of them for one hundred chariots.
5 (B)When the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David killed twenty-two thousand of the Syrians. 6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became David’s servants, and brought tribute. So (C)the Lord preserved David wherever he went.
