7 Când(A) a locuit împăratul în casa lui şi când i-a dat odihnă Domnul, după ce l-a izbăvit de toţi vrăjmaşii care-l înconjurau, 2 a zis prorocului Natan: „Iată! Eu locuiesc într-o casă(B) de cedru, şi(C) chivotul lui Dumnezeu locuieşte într-un(D) cort.” 3 Natan a răspuns împăratului: „Du-te şi fă tot ce ai în inimă(E), căci Domnul este cu tine.” 4 În noaptea următoare, Cuvântul Domnului a vorbit lui Natan: 5 „Du-te şi spune robului meu David: ‘Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: «Oare tu Îmi vei(F) zidi o casă ca să locuiesc în ea? 6 Dar Eu n-am locuit într-o casă din(G) ziua când am scos pe copiii lui Israel din Egipt până în ziua aceasta, ci am călătorit într-un cort(H) drept locuinţă. 7 Pretutindeni pe unde am mers(I) cu toţi copiii lui Israel, am spus Eu oare vreo vorbă vreuneia din seminţiile lui Israel, căreia îi poruncisem să pască(J) pe poporul Meu, Israel, zicând: Pentru ce nu-Mi zidiţi o casă de cedru?»’ 8 Acum să spui robului Meu David: ‘Aşa vorbeşte Domnul oştirilor: «Te-am luat(K) de la păşune, de la oi, ca să fii căpetenie peste poporul Meu, peste Israel; 9 am fost(L) cu tine pretutindeni pe unde ai mers, am nimicit pe toţi vrăjmaşii(M) tăi dinaintea ta şi ţi-am făcut numele mare(N), ca numele celor mari de pe pământ; 10 am dat un loc poporului Meu, lui Israel, şi l-am sădit(O) ca să locuiască în el şi să nu mai fie tulburat, ca să nu-l mai apese cei răi(P) ca mai înainte 11 şi ca pe vremea când(Q) pusesem judecători peste poporul Meu, Israel. Ţi-am dat odihnă(R) izbăvindu-te de toţi vrăjmaşii tăi. Şi Domnul îţi vesteşte că-ţi(S) va zidi o casă. 12 Când(T) ţi se vor împlini zilele şi vei fi culcat(U) cu părinţii tăi, Eu îţi voi ridica(V) un urmaş după tine, care va ieşi din trupul tău, şi-i voi întări împărăţia. 13 El(W) va zidi Numelui Meu o casă şi voi(X) întări pe vecie scaunul de domnie al împărăţiei lui. 14 Eu(Y) îi voi fi Tată şi el Îmi va fi fiu. Dacă va face răul(Z), îl voi pedepsi cu o nuia omenească şi cu lovituri omeneşti; 15 dar harul Meu nu se va depărta de la el, cum(AA) l-am depărtat de la Saul, pe care l-am îndepărtat dinaintea ta. 16 Ci casa ta şi împărăţia ta vor dăinui(AB) veşnic înaintea Mea şi scaunul tău de domnie va fi întărit pe vecie».’ ”
Rugăciunea lui David
17 Natan a spus lui David toate aceste cuvinte şi toată vedenia aceasta. 18 Şi împăratul David s-a dus şi s-a înfăţişat înaintea Domnului şi a zis: „Cine(AC) sunt eu, Doamne, Dumnezeule, şi ce este casa mea, de m-ai făcut să ajung unde sunt? 19 Şi încă atât este puţin înaintea Ta, Doamne, Dumnezeule! Tu vorbeşti despre(AD) casa robului Tău şi în viitor. Şi binevoieşti să înveţi(AE) pe un om cu privire la aceste lucruri, Doamne, Dumnezeule! 20 Ce Ţi-ar putea spune David mai mult? Tu cunoşti(AF) pe robul Tău, Doamne, Dumnezeule! 21 După cuvântul Tău şi după inima Ta, Tu ai făcut toate aceste lucruri mari, ca să le descoperi robului Tău! 22 Ce mare(AG) eşti Tu, Doamne, Dumnezeule! Căci nimeni(AH) nu este ca Tine şi nu este alt Dumnezeu afară de Tine, după tot ce am auzit cu urechile noastre. 23 Este oare pe pământ un singur neam(AI) care să fie ca poporul Tău, ca Israel, pe care a venit să-l răscumpere Dumnezeu, ca să facă din el poporul Lui, ca să-Şi facă un Nume şi ca să facă pentru el, pentru ţara Ta, minuni şi semne, izgonind dinaintea poporului(AJ) Tău, pe care l-ai răscumpărat din Egipt, neamuri şi pe dumnezeii lor? 24 Tu ai întărit(AK) pe poporul Tău, Israel, ca să fie poporul Tău pe vecie, şi Tu(AL), Doamne, Te-ai făcut Dumnezeul lui. 25 Acum, Doamne, Dumnezeule, fă să rămână în veci cuvântul pe care l-ai rostit asupra robului Tău şi asupra casei lui şi lucrează după cuvântul Tău. 26 Slăvit să fie Numele Tău pe vecie şi să se zică: ‘Domnul oştirilor este Dumnezeul lui Israel. Şi casa robului Tău David să rămână înaintea Ta!’ 27 Căci Tu Însuţi, Doamne al oştirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel, Te-ai descoperit robului Tău zicând: ‘Eu îţi voi întemeia o casă!’ De aceea a îndrăznit robul Tău să-Ţi facă această rugăciune. 28 Acum, Doamne, Dumnezeule, Tu eşti Dumnezeu şi cuvintele(AM) Tale sunt adevăr şi Tu ai vestit harul acesta robului Tău. 29 Binecuvântează dar casa robului Tău, ca să dăinuiască pe vecie înaintea Ta! Căci Tu, Doamne, Dumnezeule, ai vorbit şi, prin binecuvântarea Ta, casa robului Tău va fi binecuvântată pe(AN) vecie”.

7 And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the Lord had given him rest round about from all his enemies;
2 That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.
3 And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the Lord is with thee.
4 And it came to pass that night, that the word of the Lord came unto Nathan, saying,
5 Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the Lord, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in?
6 Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.
7 In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of cedar?
8 Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:
9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.
10 Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime,
11 And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the Lord telleth thee that he will make thee an house.
12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.
14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
15 But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.
16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
17 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.
18 Then went king David in, and sat before the Lord, and he said, Who am I, O Lord God? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
19 And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord God; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord God?
20 And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord God, knowest thy servant.
21 For thy word's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all these great things, to make thy servant know them.
22 Wherefore thou art great, O Lord God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
23 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods?
24 For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and thou, Lord, art become their God.
25 And now, O Lord God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, establish it for ever, and do as thou hast said.
26 And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, The Lord of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee.
27 For thou, O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.
28 And now, O Lord God, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:
29 Therefore now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord God, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.

7 It happened that when the king was living in his palace, and when the Lord had given him rest from his enemies all around, 2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “Look, I live in a house of cedar, but the Ark of God sits under tent curtains.”
3 Nathan said to the king, “Go and do everything that is in your heart, because the Lord is with you.”
4 But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan. He said, 5 “Go and tell my servant David all these things.”
The Covenant
This is what the Lord says. Are you the one to build a house for me to live in? 6 I have not lived in a house from the day I brought the people of Israel up from Egypt until today. I have been moving around in the Tent and the Dwelling. 7 I have traveled everywhere with all the people of Israel. Did I ever speak a word to any of the judges[a] of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, or ask them, “Why have you not built a house of cedar for me?”
8 You are also to say the following to my servant David.
This is what the Lord of Armies says. I took you from the pasture, from following sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel. 9 I have been with you wherever you went. I have cut off all your enemies from before you. I will make your reputation great, like that of the great ones on the earth. 10 I will set up a place for my people Israel, and I will plant them there. They will dwell there, and they will not be disturbed again. Violent men will not afflict them again as they did at the beginning 11 and ever since the day I appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies.
The Lord also declares to you that the Lord himself will make a house for you. 12 When your days are complete and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up after you your seed,[b] who will come from your own body. I will establish his kingdom. 13 He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he sins, I will discipline him with a rod used by men and with blows of the sons of men. 15 My faithful mercy will not depart from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I removed to make room for you. 16 Your house will stand firm, and your kingdom will endure forever before you.[c] Your throne will be established forever.
17 Nathan told David all the words that had been revealed in this vision.
David’s Response to the Covenant
18 Then King David went and sat before the Lord and said:
Who am I, Lord God? And what is my house that you have brought me to this point? 19 Yet this was a small thing in your eyes, Lord God. You have also spoken about the house of your servant for a long time into the future. Is this the law for the man, Lord God?[d]
20 What more can David say to you? You know your servant, Lord God. 21 Because of your word and according to the plan of your heart, you have carried out this great thing in order to make your servant aware of it. 22 Therefore, you are great, Lord God, because there is none like you. There is no God except you, in keeping with everything we have heard with our ears.
23 Who is like your people Israel, the one people on earth whom God went out to redeem for himself, to make them his people and to make a name for himself? You yourself did great and awe-inspiring things for your land in the presence of your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, in the presence of the nations and their gods.[e] 24 You established your people Israel for yourself to be your people forever. You, Lord, became their God.
25 Now, Lord God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. 26 Your name will be great forever. People will say, “The Lord of Armies is God over Israel.” The house of your servant David will be established before you.
27 You, Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, have whispered into the ear[f] of your servant, saying, “I will build a house for you.” Therefore, your servant has found the heart to pray to you this prayer. 28 Now, Lord God, you are God. Your words are truth. You have promised this good thing to your servant. 29 Now, therefore, please bless the house of your servant, so that it will endure forever in your presence. For you, Lord God, have spoken. With your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever.

- 2 Samuel 7:7 The translation follows the parallel reading in 1 Chronicles 17:6. Here the Hebrew reads tribes. In Hebrew script the words for tribes and judges look almost identical.
- 2 Samuel 7:12 Or your offspring or your descendent. The literal term seed is retained to point out the continuity of the messianic promises from Eve, through Abraham, David, and the kings of Judah, until they reach their fulfillment in Christ, the Seed of the Woman. To agree with the singular noun seed, the pronouns are singular throughout (he not they).
- 2 Samuel 7:16 The reading before you is the reading of the main Hebrew text. A few Hebrew manuscripts and the Greek Old Testament read before me.
- 2 Samuel 7:19 Literally this law of the man, Adonai Yahweh. This statement is cryptic, and the meaning is much debated. Most translations take it to mean something like Is this your usual way of dealing with mankind, Lord God? Martin Luther understood it to be a direct reference to Christ: This is the way of the Man (adam), who is the Lord God. Compare 1 Chronicles 17:17.
- 2 Samuel 7:23 The word order and agreement of the nouns in this verse is unusual and requires some rearranging in English.
- 2 Samuel 7:27 Or revealed into the ear. Literally you have uncovered the ear.
