6 Una vez más, David reunió los treinta mil soldados escogidos de Israel. 2 Con estos soldados y todo su ejército, partió hacia Balá de Judá para trasladar de allí el arca de Dios, sobre la cual se invoca su Nombre, el nombre del Señor de los Ejércitos que reina entre los querubines. 3 Colocaron el arca de Dios en una carreta nueva y la sacaron de la casa de Abinadab, que estaba situada en una colina. Uza y Ajío, hijos de Abinadab, guiaban la carreta nueva 4 que llevaba el arca de Dios.[a] Ajío iba delante del arca, 5 mientras David y todo el pueblo de Israel danzaban ante el Señor con gran entusiasmo y cantaban al son de arpas,[b] liras, panderos, sistros y címbalos.

6 Al llegar al campo de Nacón, los bueyes tropezaron, pero Uza extendió las manos y sostuvo el arca de Dios. 7 Entonces la ira del Señor se encendió contra Uza por su atrevimiento y lo hirió de muerte, de modo que Uza murió junto al arca de Dios.

8 David se enojó porque el Señor había matado a Uza, así que llamó a aquel lugar Peres Uza,[c] nombre que conserva hasta el día de hoy.

9 Aquel día David se sintió temeroso del Señor y exclamó: «¿Cómo voy a traerme el arca del Señor?». 10 Y como ya no quería llevarse el arca del Señor a la Ciudad de David, ordenó que la trasladaran a la casa de Obed Edom, oriundo de Gat. 11 Fue así como el arca del Señor permaneció tres meses en la casa de Obed Edom de Gat, y el Señor bendijo a Obed Edom y a toda su familia.

12 En cuanto dijeron al rey David que por causa del arca el Señor había bendecido a la familia de Obed Edom y toda su hacienda, David fue a la casa de Obed Edom y, en medio de gran algarabía, trasladó el arca de Dios a la Ciudad de David. 13 Apenas habían avanzado seis pasos los que llevaban el arca del Señor cuando David sacrificó un toro y un ternero engordado. 14 Vestido con un efod de tela de lino, se puso a bailar ante el Señor con gran entusiasmo. 15 Así que entre vítores y al son de trompetas, David y todo el pueblo de Israel llevaban el arca del Señor.

16 Sucedió que al entrar el arca del Señor a la Ciudad de David, la hija de Saúl, Mical, se asomó a la ventana y, cuando vio que el rey David estaba saltando y bailando delante del Señor, sintió por él un profundo desprecio.

17 El arca del Señor fue llevada a la tienda que David había preparado. Allí la instalaron, y luego David ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión en presencia del Señor. 18 Después de ofrecer los holocaustos y los sacrificios de comunión, David bendijo al pueblo en el nombre del Señor de los Ejércitos. 19 A cada uno de los israelitas que estaban allí congregados, que eran toda una multitud de hombres y mujeres, repartió pan, una torta de dátiles y una torta de pasas. Después de eso, todos regresaron a sus casas.

20 Cuando David volvió para bendecir a su familia, Mical, la hija de Saúl, salió al encuentro y le reprochó:

—¡Qué distinguido se ha visto hoy el rey de Israel desnudándose como un cualquiera en presencia de las esclavas de sus oficiales!

21 David respondió:

—Lo hice en presencia del Señor, quien en vez de escoger a tu padre o a cualquier otro de su familia, me escogió a mí y me hizo gobernante de Israel, que es el pueblo del Señor. De modo que seguiré bailando en presencia del Señor, 22 y me rebajaré más todavía, hasta humillarme completamente. Sin embargo, esas mismas esclavas de quienes hablas me rendirán honores.

23 Y Mical hija de Saúl murió sin haber tenido hijos.

6 David reunió de nuevo a todos los soldados escogidos de Israel, que eran treinta mil, 2 y partiendo de Baalá de Judá con todas las tropas que le acompañaban, se dispuso a trasladar de allí el arca de Dios, sobre el que se invoca el nombre del Señor todopoderoso, que tiene su trono sobre los querubines. 3-4 Pusieron el arca sobre una carreta nueva y se la llevaron de la casa de Abinadab, que estaba en una colina. Uzá y Ahió, hijos de Abinadab, iban guiando la carreta en que llevaban el arca de Dios, y Ahió iba delante del arca. 5 Mientras tanto, David y todos los israelitas iban delante de Dios cantando y danzando con todas sus fuerzas, al son de la música de arpas, salterios, panderos, castañuelas y platillos. 6 Cuando llegaron al lugar conocido como Era de Nacón, Uzá alargó la mano hacia el arca de Dios, para sostenerla, porque habían tropezado los bueyes. 7 Pero el Señor se enfureció con Uzá por aquel atrevimiento, y le quitó la vida allí mismo, cayendo Uzá muerto junto al arca de Dios.

8 David se disgustó mucho porque el Señor le quitó la vida a Uzá, y por eso llamó a aquel lugar Peres-uzá, nombre que tiene hasta el presente. 9 Pero ese mismo día David tuvo mucho miedo ante el Señor, y exclamó: «¡Ni pensar en llevarme el arca del Señor!» 10 Y como ya no quiso llevarse el arca del Señor a la Ciudad de David, ordenó que lo llevaran a casa de Obed-edom, un hombre de Gat. 11 El arca del Señor se quedó tres meses en casa de Obed-edom, y el Señor lo bendijo a él y a toda su familia.

12 Cuando le contaron al rey David que por causa del arca el Señor había bendecido a la familia de Obed-edom junto con todas sus pertenencias, David fue y con gran alegría trasladó el arca de Dios de la casa de Obed-edom a la Ciudad de David. 13 Y cuando los que llevaban el arca del Señor habían dado ya seis pasos, David sacrificó un toro y un carnero gordo.

14 David iba vestido con un efod de lino, y danzaba con todas sus fuerzas, 15 y tanto él como todos los israelitas llevaban el arca del Señor entre gritos de alegría y toque de trompetas.

16 Cuando el arca del Señor llegó a la Ciudad de David, Mical, la hija de Saúl, se asomó a la ventana; y al ver al rey David saltando y bailando delante del Señor, sintió un profundo desprecio por él.

17 El arca del Señor fue llevada y puesta en su lugar, dentro de una tienda de campaña que David había levantado con ese propósito. En seguida David ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios de reconciliación delante del Señor, 18 y cuando terminó de ofrecerlos bendijo al pueblo en el nombre del Señor todopoderoso, 19 y a todos los israelitas allí presentes, hombres y mujeres, les dio un pan, una torta de dátiles y otra de pasas. Después todos se volvieron a sus casas.

20 También David volvió a su casa para bendecir a su familia; pero Mical, la hija de Saúl, salió a recibirlo y le dijo:

—¡Qué bien ha quedado hoy el rey de Israel, mostrándose delante de las esclavas de sus criados como un desvergonzado cualquiera!

21 David le respondió:

—Es verdad; he estado bailando, pero ha sido delante del Señor, que me escogió en lugar de tu padre y de toda tu familia para ser el jefe de su pueblo Israel. Por eso bailo delante de él. 22 Y aún me humillaré más que ahora; me rebajaré, según tu opinión, pero seré honrado por esas mismas esclavas de que tú hablas.

23 Y Mical no tuvo hijos en toda su vida.

David Brings the Ark to Jerusalem

6 David again assembled[a] all the best[b] men in Israel, 30,000 in number. 2 David and all the men who were with him traveled[c] to[d] Baalah[e] in Judah to bring up from there the ark of God which is called by the name[f] of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, who sits enthroned between the cherubim that are on it. 3 They loaded the ark of God on a new cart and carried it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart. 4 They brought[g] it with the ark of God from the house of Abinadab on the hill. Ahio was walking in front of the ark, 5 while David and all Israel[h] were energetically celebrating before the Lord, singing[i] and playing various stringed instruments,[j] tambourines, rattles,[k] and cymbals.

6 When they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon,[l] Uzzah reached out and grabbed hold of[m] the ark of God,[n] because the oxen stumbled. 7 The Lord was so furious with Uzzah,[o] he[p] killed him on the spot[q] for his negligence.[r] He died right there beside the ark of God.

8 David was angry because the Lord attacked[s] Uzzah; so he called that place Perez Uzzah,[t] which remains its name to this very day. 9 David was afraid of the Lord that day and said, “How will the ark of the Lord ever come to me?” 10 So David was no longer willing to bring the ark of the Lord to be with him in the City of David. David left it in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 11 The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months. The Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his family.[u] 12 King David was told,[v] “The Lord has blessed the family of Obed-Edom and everything he owns because of the ark of God.” So David went and joyfully brought the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David. 13 Those who carried the ark of the Lord took six steps and then David[w] sacrificed an ox and a fatling calf. 14 Now David, wearing a linen ephod, was dancing with all his strength before the Lord.[x] 15 David and all Israel[y] were bringing up the ark of the Lord, shouting and blowing trumpets.[z]

16 As the ark of the Lord entered the City of David, Saul’s daughter Michal looked out the window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him.[aa] 17 They brought the ark of the Lord and put it in its place[ab] in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before the Lord. 18 When David finished offering the burnt sacrifices and peace offerings, he pronounced a blessing over the people in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 19 He then handed out to each member of the entire assembly of Israel,[ac] both men and women, a portion of bread, a date cake,[ad] and a raisin cake. Then all the people went home.[ae] 20 When David went home to pronounce a blessing on his own house,[af] Michal, Saul’s daughter, came out to meet him.[ag] She said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished[ah] himself this day! He has exposed himself today before his servants’ slave girls the way a vulgar fool[ai] might do!”

21 David replied to Michal, “It was before the Lord! I was celebrating before the Lord, who chose me over your father and his entire family[aj] and appointed me as leader over the Lord’s people Israel. 22 I am willing to shame and humiliate myself even more than this.[ak] But with the slave girls whom you mentioned, let me be distinguished.” 23 Now Michal, Saul’s daughter, had no children to the day of her death.

  1. 2 Samuel 6:1 tn The translation understands the verb to be a defective spelling of וַיֶּאֱסֹף (vayyeʾesof) due to quiescence of the letter א (alef). The root therefore is אָסַף (ʾasaf, “to gather”). The Masoretes, however, pointed the verb as וַיֹּסֶף (vayyosef), understanding it to be a form of יָסַף (yasaf, “to add”). This does not fit the context, which calls for a verb of gathering.

  4. 2 Samuel 6:2 tn Heb “from,” but the following context indicates they traveled to this location.

Many medieval Hebrew mss in the first occurrence point the word differently and read the adverb שָׁם (sham, “there”). This is also the understanding of the Syriac Peshitta (Syr., taman). While this yields an acceptable understanding to the text, it is more likely that the MT reading results from dittography. If the word did occur twice, one might have expected the first occurrence to have the article. The present translation therefore reads שֵׁם only once.

  8. 2 Samuel 6:5 tn Heb “all the house of Israel.”
  9. 2 Samuel 6:5 tc Heb “were celebrating before the Lord with all woods of fir” (cf. KJV, ASV, NASB). If the text is retained, the last expression must be elliptical, referring to musical instruments made from fir wood. But it is preferable to emend the text in light of 1 Chr 13:8, which reads “were celebrating before the Lord with all strength and with songs.”
