6 David samlet atter alt utvalgt mannskap i Israel - tretti tusen mann.

2 Og David og alt folket som var hos ham, tok ut og drog fra Ba'ale-Juda[a] for å føre Guds ark op derfra, den som kalles med Herrens navn - med Herrens, hærskarenes Guds navn, han som troner på kjerubene[b].

3 De satte Guds ark på en ny vogn og førte den bort fra Abinadabs hus, som lå på haugen; og Ussa og Ahjo, Abinadabs sønner, kjørte den nye vogn.

4 Således førte de Guds ark bort fra Abinadabs hus, som lå på haugen, og fulgte med den, og Ahjo gikk foran arken.

5 Og David og hele Israels hus lekte for Herrens åsyn til alle slags strengelek av cypresstre, både citarer og harper og trommer og bjeller og cymbler.

6 Da de kom til Nakons treskeplass, rakte Ussa sin hånd ut og tok fatt i Guds ark; for oksene var blitt ustyrlige.

7 Da optendtes Herrens vrede mot Ussa, og Gud slo ham der for hans forseelse, så han døde der ved Guds ark.

8 Men David blev ille til mote, fordi Herren hadde slått Ussa ned; derfor er dette sted blitt kalt Peres-Ussa[c] like til denne dag.

9 Den dag blev David opfylt av frykt for Herren og sa: Hvorledes skulde Herrens ark kunne komme inn til mig?

10 Og David vilde ikke flytte Herrens ark op til sig i Davids stad, men lot den føre bort til gittitten Obed-Edoms hus.

11 Herrens ark blev stående i gittitten Obed-Edoms hus i tre måneder, og Herren velsignet Obed-Edom og alt hans hus.

12 Så kom det nogen og fortalte kong David at Herren hadde velsignet Obed-Edoms hus og alt det han hadde, for Guds arks skyld. Da tok David avsted og førte Guds ark fra Obed-Edoms hus op til Davids stad med stor glede.

13 Og da de som bar Herrens ark, hadde gått seks skritt frem, ofret han okser og gjøkalver.

14 Og David danset av all makt for Herrens åsyn - han hadde en livkjortel av lerret på.

15 Således førte David og hele Israels hus Herrens ark op med fryderop og basunklang.

16 Da nu Herrens ark kom inn i Davids stad, så Mikal, Sauls datter, ut igjennem vinduet, og hun så kong David hoppe og danse for Herrens åsyn, og hun foraktet ham i sitt hjerte.

17 Så førte de da Herrens ark inn og satte den på sitt sted midt i det telt som David hadde reist for den, og David ofret brennoffer for Herrens åsyn og takkoffer.

18 Og da David var ferdig med å ofre brennofferet og takkofferne, velsignet han folket i Herrens, hærskarenes Guds navn.

19 Og han utdelte til alt folket, til hver enkelt av hele Israels mengde, både mann og kvinne, et brød og et stykke kjøtt og en rosinkake. Så drog alt folket hjem, hver til sitt hus.

20 Da David kom hjem igjen for å velsigne sitt hus, gikk Mikal, Sauls datter, ut imot ham og sa: Hvor høit Israels konge er blitt æret idag - han som idag har blottet sig for øinene på sine tjeneres piker, som løse folk pleier å gjøre!

21 Da sa David til Mikal: For Herrens åsyn, han som utvalgte mig fremfor din far og fremfor hele hans hus og satte mig til fyrste over Herrens folk, over Israel - for Herrens åsyn har jeg danset;

22 og jeg vil gjøre mig ennu ringere enn så og bli liten i mine egne øine, og de tjenestepiker du talte om, sammen med dem vil jeg æres.

23 Men Mikal, Sauls datter, blev barnløs til sin dødsdag.

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

6 (A)David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2 And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from (B)Baale-judah (C)to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts (D)who sits enthroned on the cherubim. 3 And they carried the ark of God (E)on a new cart and brought it (F)out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio,[a] the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart, 4 with the ark of God,[b] and Ahio went before the ark.

Uzzah and the Ark

5 And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, with (G)songs[c] and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals. 6 And when they came to the threshing floor of (H)Nacon, Uzzah (I)put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. 7 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and (J)God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God. 8 And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzah[d] to this day. 9 And David was afraid of the Lord that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” 10 So David was not willing to take the ark of the Lord into the city of David. But David took it aside (K)to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 11 And the ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, (L)and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and all his household.

12 And it was told King David, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” (M)So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom (N)to the city of David with rejoicing. 13 And when (O)those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six steps, (P)he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal. 14 And David (Q)danced before the Lord with all his might. And David was (R)wearing a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the horn.

16 As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart. 17 And they brought in the ark of the Lord and set it (S)in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it. (T)And David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 18 And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, (U)he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts 19 and distributed among all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, a cake of bread, a portion of meat,[e] and a cake of raisins to each one. (V)Then all the people departed, each to his house.

20 And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel honored himself today, (W)uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants' female servants, as one of the (X)vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” 21 And David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, (Y)who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince[f] over Israel, the people of the Lord—and I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your[g] eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.” 23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.

6 David again gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2 David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale Judah, to bring up from there God’s ark, which is called by the Name, even the name of Yahweh of Armies who sits above the cherubim. 3 They set God’s ark on a new cart, and brought it out of Abinadab’s house that was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart. 4 They brought it out of Abinadab’s house which was in the hill, with God’s ark; and Ahio went before the ark. 5 David and all the house of Israel played before Yahweh with all kinds of instruments made of cypress wood, with harps, with stringed instruments, with tambourines, with castanets, and with cymbals.

6 When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached for God’s ark and took hold of it, for the cattle stumbled. 7 Yahweh’s anger burned against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error; and he died there by God’s ark. 8 David was displeased because Yahweh had broken out against Uzzah; and he called that place Perez Uzzah[a] to this day. 9 David was afraid of Yahweh that day; and he said, “How could Yahweh’s ark come to me?” 10 So David would not move Yahweh’s ark to be with him in David’s city; but David carried it aside into Obed-Edom the Gittite’s house. 11 Yahweh’s ark remained in Obed-Edom the Gittite’s house three months; and Yahweh blessed Obed-Edom and all his house. 12 King David was told, “Yahweh has blessed the house of Obed-Edom, and all that belongs to him, because of God’s ark.”

So David went and brought up God’s ark from the house of Obed-Edom into David’s city with joy. 13 When those who bore Yahweh’s ark had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened calf. 14 David danced before Yahweh with all his might; and David was clothed in a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up Yahweh’s ark with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet.

16 As Yahweh’s ark came into David’s city, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out through the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before Yahweh; and she despised him in her heart. 17 They brought in Yahweh’s ark, and set it in its place in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before Yahweh. 18 When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of Yahweh of Armies. 19 He gave to all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, both to men and women, to everyone a portion of bread, dates, and raisins. So all the people departed, each to his own house.

20 Then David returned to bless his household. Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious the king of Israel was today, who uncovered himself today in the eyes of his servants’ maids, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!”

21 David said to Michal, “It was before Yahweh, who chose me above your father, and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of Yahweh, over Israel. Therefore I will celebrate before Yahweh. 22 I will be yet more undignified than this, and will be worthless in my own sight. But the maids of whom you have spoken will honor me.”

23 Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.

6 David again brought together all the able young men of Israel—thirty thousand. 2 He and all his men went to Baalah[a](C) in Judah to bring up from there the ark(D) of God, which is called by the Name,[b](E) the name of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned(F) between the cherubim(G) on the ark. 3 They set the ark of God on a new cart(H) and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill.(I) Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart 4 with the ark of God on it,[c] and Ahio was walking in front of it. 5 David and all Israel were celebrating(J) with all their might before the Lord, with castanets,[d] harps, lyres, timbrels, sistrums and cymbals.(K)

6 When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of(L) the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. 7 The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act;(M) therefore God struck him down,(N) and he died there beside the ark of God.

8 Then David was angry because the Lord’s wrath(O) had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.[e](P)

9 David was afraid of the Lord that day and said, “How(Q) can the ark of the Lord ever come to me?” 10 He was not willing to take the ark of the Lord to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom(R) the Gittite. 11 The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed him and his entire household.(S)

12 Now King David(T) was told, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God.” So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13 When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed(U) a bull and a fattened calf. 14 Wearing a linen ephod,(V) David was dancing(W) before the Lord with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts(X) and the sound of trumpets.(Y)

16 As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David,(Z) Michal(AA) daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart.

17 They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it,(AB) and David sacrificed burnt offerings(AC) and fellowship offerings before the Lord. 18 After he had finished sacrificing(AD) the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed(AE) the people in the name of the Lord Almighty. 19 Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins(AF) to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and women.(AG) And all the people went to their homes.

20 When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked(AH) in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!”

21 David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed(AI) me ruler(AJ) over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.”

23 And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.
