5 3 David is made King over all Israel. 7 He taketh the fort of Zion. 19 He asketh counsel of the Lord. 23 And overcometh the Philistines twice.
1 Then (A)came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and said thus, Behold, we are thy [a]bones and thy flesh.
2 And in time past when Saul was our King, thou leddest Israel in and out: and the Lord hath said to thee, (B)Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel.
3 So all the Elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron: and King David made a covenant with them in Hebron [b]before the Lord, and they anointed David King over Israel.
4 ¶ David was thirty years old when he began to reign: and he reigned forty years.
5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah (C)seven years, and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.
6 ¶ The King also and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: who spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the [c]blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking that David could not come thither:
7 But David took the fort of Zion: this is the city of David.
8 Now David had said the same day, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites, and getteth up to the gutters and smiteth the lame and blind, which David’s soul hateth, I will prefer him: (D)therefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not [d]come into that house.
9 So David dwelt in that fort, and called it the city of David, and David built round about it, from [e]Millo, and inward.
10 And David prospered and grew: for the Lord God of hosts was with him.
11 ¶ Hiram also king of [f]Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons for walls: and they built David an house.
12 Then David knew that the Lord had established him King over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel’s sake.
13 And David took him more (E)concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron, and more sons and daughters were born to David.
14 (F)And these be the names of the sons, that were born unto him in Jerusalem, Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon,
15 And Ibhar, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia,
16 And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphelet.
17 ¶ (G)But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David: and when David heard, he went down to a fort.
18 But the Philistines came, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.
19 Then David [g]asked counsel of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hands? And the Lord answered David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hands.
20 ¶ (H)Then David came to Baal Perazim, and smote them there, and said, The Lord hath divided mine enemies asunder before me, as waters be divided asunder: therefore he called the name of that place, [h]Baal Perazim.
21 And there they left their images, and David and his men (I)burnt them.
22 Again the Philistines came up, and spread themselves in the valley of [i]Rephaim.
23 And when David asked counsel of the Lord, he answered, Thou shalt not go up, but turn about behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.
24 And when thou hearest the noise of one going in the tops of the mulberry trees, then remove: for then shall the Lord go out before thee to smite the host of the Philistines.
25 Then David did so as the Lord had commanded him, and smote the Philistines from Geba, until thou come to [j]Gezer.

5 Derefter kom alle Nordrigets stammeledere til David i Hebron. „Vi tilhører jo et og samme folk,” sagde de. 2 „Og du har altid været vores leder i krig, selvom Saul var vores konge! 10 I de følgende år styrkede David sit kongedømme, for Herren, den Almægtige, var med ham.
11 Kong Hiram af Tyrus sendte kong David en masse cedertræ som venskabsgave. Samtidig sendte han tømrere og stenhuggere, der skulle hjælpe med at bygge et flot palads til ham. 12 Da forstod David, at Herren havde valgt ham til konge og styrket hans kongemagt for sit udvalgte folks skyld.

13 Efter at David var flyttet fra Hebron til Jerusalem, tog han flere koner og medhustruer, og han fik mange sønner og døtre. 14 Her følger navnene på de sønner, der blev født i Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Natan, Salomon, 15 Jibhar, Elishua, Nefeg, Jafia, 16 Elishama, Eljada og Elifelet.

17 Da filistrene hørte, at David også var blevet kronet til konge over Nordriget, mobiliserede de deres styrker og tog af sted for at tage ham til fange. Men David fik meddelelse om det og tog ned til sin klippeborg. 18 Filistrenes hær kom og slog lejr i Refaimdalen.
19 Da spurgte David Herren til råds: „Skal jeg gå ud og kæmpe imod dem? Vil du give mig sejr over dem?”
Herren svarede: „Ja, jeg vil udlevere dem til dig.”
20 Derefter rykkede David ud og besejrede dem. „Det var Herren, der gjorde det!” erklærede han. „Herren brød gennem fjendens slagrækker som en flodbølge!” Derfor kaldte han stedet for Ba’al-Peratzim.[a]
21 De flygtende filistre havde efterladt deres afgudsbilleder på slagmarken, og David konfiskerede dem.
22 Men filistrene kom tilbage og slog atter lejr i Refaimdalen. 23 David rådførte sig igen med Herren, og svaret lød: „Undgå et frontalt angreb! Gå bag om fjenden og slå til ud for baka-træerne.[b] 24 Så snart du hører lyden af taktfaste skridt i toppen af træerne, skal du gå til angreb, for det betyder, at Herren selv er gået i forvejen for at tilintetgøre fjendens hær.”
25 David gjorde, som Herren havde sagt, og hans hær huggede filistrene ned fra Gibeon og helt til Gezer.

5 All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron(A) and said, “Here we are, your own flesh and blood.[a](B) 2 Even while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led us out to battle and brought us back.(C) The Lord also said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will be ruler over Israel.’”
3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron. King David made a covenant with them(D) at Hebron in the Lord’s presence, and they anointed David king over Israel.
4 David was thirty years old when he began his reign;(E) he reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.
6 The king and his men marched to Jerusalem against the Jebusites(F) who inhabited the land. The Jebusites had said to David, “You will never get in here. Even the blind and lame can repel you” thinking, “David can’t get in here.”
7 Yet David did capture the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David.(G) 8 He said that day, “Whoever attacks the Jebusites must go through the water shaft to reach the lame and the blind who are despised by David.”[b] For this reason it is said, “The blind and the lame will never enter the house.”[c]
9 David took up residence in the stronghold, which he named the city of David. He built it up all the way around from the supporting terraces inward. 10 David became more and more powerful,(H) and the Lord God of Armies was with him.(I) 11 King Hiram of Tyre sent envoys to David; he also sent cedar logs, carpenters, and stonemasons,(J) and they built a palace for David. 12 Then David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.
13 After he arrived from Hebron, David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to him. 14 These are the names of those born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan,(K) Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.(L)
17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel,(M) they all went in search of David, but he heard about it and went down to the stronghold.(N) 18 So the Philistines came and spread out in Rephaim Valley.
19 Then David inquired of the Lord:(O) “Should I attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?”
The Lord replied to David, “Attack, for I will certainly hand the Philistines over to you.”
20 So David went to Baal-perazim and defeated them there and said, “Like a bursting flood, the Lord has burst out against my enemies before me.”(P) Therefore, he named that place The Lord Bursts Out.[d] 21 The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them off.
22 The Philistines came up again and spread out in Rephaim Valley. 23 So David inquired of the Lord, and he answered, “Do not attack directly, but circle around behind them and come at them opposite the balsam trees. 24 When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, act decisively, for then the Lord will have gone out ahead of you to strike down the army of the Philistines.”(Q) 25 So David did exactly as the Lord commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Geba to Gezer.
