4 Când a auzit Iş-Boşet, fiul lui Saul, că Abner a fost ucis în Hebron, i-a pierit curajul, iar întreg Israelul s-a îngrozit. 2 Fiul lui Saul avea două căpetenii peste cetele de prădători. Una se numea Baana, iar cealaltă se numea Recab. Aceştia erau fiii lui Rimon, din Beerot, din seminţia lui Beniamin – Beerot este considerat ca făcând parte din Beniamin 3 deoarece beerotiţii fugiseră la Ghitaim. Ei au locuit acolo ca străini până astăzi.
4 (Ionatan, fiul lui Saul, avea un fiu care era olog de ambele picioare. Acesta era în vârstă de cinci ani când a sosit din Izreel vestea morţii lui Saul şi a lui Ionatan. Doica sa l-a luat şi a fugit cu el, însă în graba ei, copilul a căzut şi a rămas olog. Numele lui era Mefiboşet).
5 Într-o zi, aceşti fii ai lui Rimon din Beerot, Recab şi Baana, au plecat spre casa lui Iş-Boşet şi au sosit acolo în arşiţa zilei, tocmai când acesta se odihnea la prânz. 6 Au pătruns până în interiorul casei ca şi cum ar fi dorit să ia nişte grâu şi l-au înjunghiat în stomac. Apoi Recab şi fratele său, Baana, au reuşit să scape. 7 Ei intraseră în casă, în timp ce acesta era culcat pe pat, în dormitorul său. După ce l-au înjunghiat şi l-au ucis, i-au tăiat capul. Apoi, luându-i capul cu ei, au străbătut Araba[a] toată noaptea. 8 Au adus capul lui Iş-Boşet la David, la Hebron şi i-au zis regelui:
– Iată capul lui Iş-Boşet, fiul lui Saul, duşmanul tău, care a căutat să-ţi ia viaţa. Astăzi, Domnul l-a răzbunat pe stăpânul meu, regele, împotriva lui Saul şi a urmaşilor săi.
9 David însă le-a răspuns lui Recab şi fratelui său, Baana, fiii lui Rimon din Beerot:
– Viu este Domnul, Care m-a izbăvit din toate necazurile, 10 că pe cel care mi-a zis: „Saul este mort!“, crezând că îmi aduce veşti bune, l-am prins şi l-am omorât la Ţiklag. Aceasta a fost răsplata pentru vestea pe care mi-a adus-o. 11 Oare nu voi face cu atât mai mult unor ticăloşi care ucid un om nevinovat în casa şi în patul său? Prin urmare, să nu cer eu sângele lui din mâinile voastre şi să nu vă şterg de pe faţa pământului?
12 David a dat ordin oamenilor săi, iar aceştia i-au ucis. Le-au tăiat mâinile şi picioarele şi le-au atârnat trupurile lângă iazul din Hebron. Capul lui Iş-Boşet însă l-au luat şi l-au înmormântat în mormântul lui Abner din Hebron.

4 And when Saul's son heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands were feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled.
2 And Saul's son had two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon a Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin: (for Beeroth also was reckoned to Benjamin.
3 And the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and were sojourners there until this day.)
4 And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.
5 And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ishbosheth, who lay on a bed at noon.
6 And they came thither into the midst of the house, as though they would have fetched wheat; and they smote him under the fifth rib: and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.
7 For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and gat them away through the plain all night.
8 And they brought the head of Ishbosheth unto David to Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of Ishbosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the Lord hath avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.
9 And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the Lord liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity,
10 When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his tidings:
11 How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth?
12 And David commanded his young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up over the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbosheth, and buried it in the sepulchre of Abner in Hebron.

Ishbosheth Is Murdered
4 When Saul’s son Ishbosheth heard that Abner had died in Hebron, he lost his courage, and all Israel was alarmed. 2 Saul’s son had two men who were captains of raiding parties. One was named Baanah, and the other was named Rechab. They were the sons of Rimmon from Beeroth from the tribe of Benjamin.
(Beeroth was considered a part of Benjamin, 3 even though the people of Beeroth had fled to Gittaim. They still live there today. 4 In addition, Saul’s son Jonathan had a son who was crippled. When the boy was five years old, the news about the death of Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel. His nurse picked him up and fled to Gittaim. She was in a hurry when she left, and he fell from her arms and became disabled. His name was Mephibosheth.)
5 Rechab and Baanah, the sons of Rimmon from Beeroth, came to Ishbosheth’s home at the hottest time of the day. Ishbosheth was taking his midday nap 6 when they came into the house as though they were going to get some flour. Instead, they stabbed him in the belly. Then Rechab and his brother Baanah escaped. 7 (They had come into the house while Ishbosheth was sleeping on his bed in his bedroom. They stabbed him, killed him, and cut off his head.) They took his head and traveled all night along the road to the plains.
8 They brought Ishbosheth’s head to David at Hebron. “Here is the head of Ishbosheth, the son of your enemy Saul who tried to kill you,” they told the king. “Today Yahweh has given Your Royal Majesty revenge on Saul and his descendants.”
9 David responded to Rechab and his brother Baanah, the sons of Rimmon from Beeroth, 10 “I once seized a man who told me that Saul had died. He thought he was bringing good news. I killed him in Ziklag to reward him for his news. 11 How much more should I reward wicked men who kill an innocent man on his own bed in his home? Yahweh has rescued me from every trouble. I solemnly swear, as Yahweh lives,[a] I’ll now seek revenge for his murder and rid the land of you.” 12 So David gave an order to his young men, who executed Rechab and Baanah, cut off their hands and feet, and hung their dead bodies by the pond in Hebron. Then they took Ishbosheth’s head and buried it in Abner’s tomb in Hebron.
