4 When Saul’s son heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands became feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled. 2 Saul’s son had two men who were captains of raiding bands. The name of one was Baanah and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin (for Beeroth also is considered a part of Benjamin; 3 and the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and have lived as foreigners there until today).
4 Now Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son who was lame in his feet. He was five years old when the news came about Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel; and his nurse picked him up and fled. As she hurried to flee, he fell and became lame. His name was Mephibosheth.
5 The sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went out and came at about the heat of the day to the house of Ishbosheth as he took his rest at noon. 6 They came there into the middle of the house as though they would have fetched wheat, and they struck him in the body; and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped. 7 Now when they came into the house as he lay on his bed in his bedroom, they struck him, killed him, beheaded him, and took his head, and went by the way of the Arabah all night. 8 They brought the head of Ishbosheth to David to Hebron, and said to the king, “Behold, the head of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life! Yahweh has avenged my lord the king today of Saul and of his offspring.[a]”
9 David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said to them, “As Yahweh lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity, 10 when someone told me, ‘Behold, Saul is dead,’ thinking that he brought good news, I seized him and killed him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news. 11 How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house on his bed, should I not now require his blood from your hand, and rid the earth of you?” 12 David commanded his young men, and they killed them, cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up beside the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbosheth and buried it in Abner’s grave in Hebron.

4 When Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, heard that Abner had died at Hebron, (A)his courage failed, and all Israel was dismayed. 2 Now Saul's son had two men who were captains of raiding bands; the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, sons of Rimmon a man of Benjamin from Beeroth ((B)for Beeroth also is counted part of Benjamin; 3 (C)the Beerothites fled (D)to Gittaim and have been sojourners there to this day).
4 (E)Jonathan, the son of Saul, had a son who was crippled in his feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan (F)came from Jezreel, and his nurse took him up and fled, and as she fled in her haste, he fell and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.
5 Now the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, set out, and about the heat of the day they came to the house of Ish-bosheth as he was taking his noonday rest. 6 And they came into the midst of the house as if to get wheat, and they stabbed him (G)in the stomach. Then Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.[a] 7 When they came into the house, as he lay on his bed in his bedroom, they struck him and put him to death and beheaded him. They took his head and went by the way of (H)the Arabah all night, 8 and brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron. And they said to the king, “Here is the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, (I)who sought your life. 4 Sauls zoon Isboset hoorde dat Abner in Hebron was vermoord. Toen zonk de moed hem in de schoenen. Heel Israël werd bang. 2 Isboset had twee aanvoerders: Baëna en Rechab. Zij waren zonen van Rimmon uit Beërot in het gebied van de stam van Benjamin. 3 (De mensen die daarvóór in Beërot woonden, waren naar Gittaïm gevlucht. Daar wonen ze nu nog steeds als vreemdelingen.)
4 Sauls zoon Jonatan had een zoon met kreupele voeten. Hij heette Mefiboset. Hij was vijf jaar toen Saul en Jonatan in Jizreël waren gedood. Zijn verzorgster was toen met hem gevlucht. Onderweg had ze hem in de haast laten vallen. Daardoor was hij kreupel geworden.
5 Op een keer gingen Rechab en Baëna op het heetst van de dag naar het huis van Isboset. Isboset lag op bed te rusten. 6 Ze liepen het huis in, met de smoes dat ze graan wilden komen halen. Ze staken Isboset in zijn buik en vertrokken weer. 7 Ze waren het huis binnengekomen toen hij in zijn slaapkamer op bed lag. Ze staken hem dood en hakten zijn hoofd af. Ze vertrokken en namen zijn hoofd mee. De hele nacht liepen ze door, naar Hebron, over de weg door de vlakte. 8 Ze brachten het hoofd van Isboset naar koning David in Hebron. Ze zeiden tegen hem: "Kijk, hier is het hoofd van Isboset, de zoon van uw vijand Saul. Saul heeft u altijd willen doden. Vandaag heeft de Heer daarvoor wraak genomen op Saul en zijn kinderen." 9+10 Maar David antwoordde hen: "Toen Saul dood was, was er een man die mij dat bericht kwam brengen. Hij dacht dat hij voor dat nieuws wel een beloning van mij zou krijgen. Maar ik heb hem in Ziklag gegrepen en gedood. Zo'n beloning had hij verdiend met zijn nieuws. Ik zweer bij de Heer die mij uit elk gevaar heeft gered: 11 jullie zal ik op dezelfde manier belonen! Want jullie zijn schurken, dat jullie een onschuldig man thuis in zijn bed vermoorden!" 12 En hij gaf zijn mannen het bevel om de twee te doden. Daarna hakten ze hun de handen en voeten af en hingen hen op bij de vijver in Hebron. Maar het hoofd van Isboset begroeven ze in het graf van Abner in Hebron.

4 And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.
5 And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ishbosheth, who lay on a bed at noon.
6 And they came thither into the midst of the house, as though they would have fetched wheat; and they smote him under the fifth rib: and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.
7 For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and gat them away through the plain all night.
8 And they brought the head of Ishbosheth unto David to Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of Ishbosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the Lord hath avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.
9 And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the Lord liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity,
10 When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his tidings:
11 How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth?
12 And David commanded his young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up over the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbosheth, and buried it in the sepulchre of Abner in Hebron.
