3 This battle was the beginning of a long war between the followers of Saul and the followers of David. Saul's power grew weaker, but David's grew stronger.
David's Sons Born in Hebron
(1 Chronicles 3.1-4)
2-5 Several of David's sons were born while he was living in Hebron. His oldest son was Amnon, whose mother was Ahinoam from Jezreel. David's second son was Chileab, whose mother was Abigail, who had been married to Nabal from Carmel. Absalom was the third. His mother was Maacah, the daughter of King Talmai of Geshur. The fourth was Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith. The fifth was Shephatiah, whose mother was Abital. The sixth was Ithream, whose mother was Eglah, another one of David's wives.
Abner Decides To Help David
6 As the war went on between the families of David and Saul, Abner was gaining more power than ever in Saul's family. 7 He had even slept with a wife[a] of Saul by the name of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah. But Saul's son Ishbosheth[b] told Abner, “You shouldn't have slept with one of my father's wives!”
8 Abner was very angry because of what Ishbosheth had said, and he told Ishbosheth:
Am I some kind of worthless dog from Judah? I've always been loyal to your father's family and to his relatives and friends. I haven't turned you over to David. And yet you talk to me as if I've committed a crime with this woman.
9 I ask God to punish me if I don't help David get what the Lord promised him! 10 (A) God said that he wouldn't let anyone in Saul's family ever be king again and that David would be king instead. He also said that David would rule both Israel and Judah, all the way from Dan in the north to Beersheba in the south.[c]
11 Ishbosheth was so afraid of Abner that he could not even answer.
12 Abner sent some of his men to David with this message: “You should be the ruler of the whole nation. If you make an agreement with me, I will persuade everyone in Israel to make you their king.”
13 David sent this message back: “Good! I'll make an agreement with you. But before I will even talk with you about it, you must get Saul's daughter Michal back for me.”
14 (B) David sent a few of his officials to Ishbosheth to give him this message: “Give me back my wife Michal! I killed 100 Philistines so I could marry her.”[d]
15 Ishbosheth sent some of his men to take Michal away from her new husband, Paltiel the son of Laish. 16 Paltiel followed Michal and the men all the way to Bahurim, crying as he walked. But he went back home after Abner ordered him to leave.
17 Abner talked with the leaders of the tribes of Israel and told them, “You've wanted to make David your king for a long time now. 18 So do it! After all, God said he would use his servant David to rescue his people Israel from their enemies, especially from the Philistines.”
19 Finally, Abner talked with the tribe of Benjamin. Then he left for Hebron to tell David everything that the tribe of Benjamin and the rest of the people of Israel wanted to do. 20 Abner took 20 soldiers with him, and when they got to Hebron, David gave a big feast for them.
21 After the feast, Abner said, “Your Majesty, let me leave now and bring Israel here to make an agreement with you. You'll be king of the whole nation, just as you've been wanting.”
David told Abner he could leave, and he left without causing any trouble.
Joab Kills Abner
22 Soon after Abner had left Hebron, Joab and some of David's soldiers came back, bringing a lot of things they had taken from an enemy village. 23 Right after they arrived, someone told Joab, “Abner visited the king, and the king let him go. Abner even left without causing any trouble.”
24 Joab went to David and said, “What have you done? Abner came to you, and you let him go. Now he's long gone! 25 You know Abner—he came to trick you. He wants to find out how strong your army is and to know everything you're doing.”
26 Joab left David, then he sent some messengers to catch up with Abner. They brought him back from the well at Sirah,[e] but David did not know anything about it. 27 When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab pretended he wanted to talk privately with him. So he took Abner into one of the small rooms that were part of the town gate and stabbed him in the stomach. Joab killed him because Abner had killed Joab's brother Asahel.
Abner's Funeral
28 David heard how Joab had killed Abner, and he said, “I swear to the Lord that I am completely innocent of Abner's death! 29 Joab and his family are the guilty ones. I pray that Joab's family will always be sick with sores and other skin diseases. May they all be cowards,[f] and may they die in war or starve to death.”
30 Joab and his brother Abishai killed Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle at Gibeon.
31 David told Joab and everyone with him, “Show your sorrow by tearing your clothes and wearing sackcloth![g] Walk in front of Abner's body and cry!”
David walked behind the stretcher on which Abner's body was being carried. 32 Abner was buried in Hebron, while David and everyone else stood at the tomb and cried loudly. 33 Then the king sang a funeral song about Abner:
Abner, why should you
have died like an outlaw?[h]
34 No one tied your hands
or chained your feet,
yet you died as a victim
of murderers.
Everyone started crying again. 35 Then they brought some food to David and told him he would feel better if he had something to eat. It was still daytime, and David said, “I swear to God that I won't take a bite of bread or anything else until sunset!”
36 Everyone noticed what David did, and they liked it, just as they always liked what he did. 37 Now the people of Judah and Israel were certain that David had nothing to do with killing Abner.
38 David said to his officials, “Don't you realize that today one of Israel's great leaders has died? 39 I am the chosen king, but Joab and Abishai have more power than I do. So God will have to pay them back[i] for the evil thing they did.”

Joab Kills Abner
3 Now there was a long (A)war between the house of Saul and the house of David. But David grew stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.
Sons of David
2 Sons were born (B)to David in Hebron: His firstborn was Amnon (C)by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; 3 his second, [a]Chileab, by Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite; the third, (D)Absalom the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king (E)of Geshur; 4 the fourth, (F)Adonijah the son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; 5 and the sixth, Ithream, by David’s wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.
Abner Joins Forces with David
6 Now it was so, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner was strengthening his hold on the house of Saul.
7 And Saul had a concubine, whose name was (G)Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah. So Ishbosheth said to Abner, “Why have you (H)gone in to my father’s concubine?”
8 Then Abner became very angry at the words of Ishbosheth, and said, “Am I (I)a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show loyalty to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman? 9 (J)May God do so to Abner, and more also, if I do not do for David (K)as the Lord has sworn to him— 10 to transfer the kingdom from the [b]house of Saul, and set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, (L)from Dan to Beersheba.” 11 And he could not answer Abner another word, because he feared him.
12 Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to David, saying, “Whose is the land?” saying also, “Make your covenant with me, and indeed my hand shall be with you to bring all Israel to you.”
13 And David said, “Good, I will make a covenant with you. But one thing I require of you: (M)you shall not see my face unless you first bring (N)Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.” 14 So David sent messengers to (O)Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself (P)for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.” 15 And Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband, from [c]Paltiel the son of Laish. 16 Then her husband went along with her to (Q)Bahurim, [d]weeping behind her. So Abner said to him, “Go, return!” And he returned.
17 Now Abner had communicated with the elders of Israel, saying, “In time past you were seeking for David to be king over you. 18 Now then, do it! (R)For the Lord has spoken of David, saying, ‘By the hand of My servant David, [e]I will save My people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and the hand of all their enemies.’ ” 19 And Abner also spoke in the hearing of (S)Benjamin. Then Abner also went to speak in the hearing of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel and the whole house of Benjamin.
20 So Abner and twenty men with him came to David at Hebron. And David made a feast for Abner and the men who were with him. 21 Then Abner said to David, “I will arise and go, and (T)gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may (U)reign over all that your heart desires.” So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.
Joab Murders Abner
22 At that moment the servants of David and Joab came from a raid and brought much [f]spoil with them. But Abner was not with David in Hebron, for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace. 23 When Joab and all the troops that were with him had come, they told Joab, saying, “Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he sent him away, and he has gone in peace.” 24 Then Joab came to the king and said, “What have you done? Look, Abner came to you; why is it that you sent him away, and he has already gone? 25 Surely you realize that Abner the son of Ner came to deceive you, to know (V)your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you are doing.”
26 And when Joab had gone from David’s presence, he sent messengers after Abner, who brought him back from the well of Sirah. But David did not know it. 27 Now when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab (W)took him aside in the gate to speak with him privately, and there [g]stabbed him (X)in the stomach, so that he died for the blood of (Y)Asahel his brother.
28 Afterward, when David heard it, he said, “My kingdom and I are [h]guiltless before the Lord forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner. 29 (Z)Let it rest on the head of Joab and on all his father’s house; and let there never fail to be in the [i]house of Joab one (AA)who has a discharge or is a leper, who leans on a staff or falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.” 30 So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had killed their brother (AB)Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.
David’s Mourning for Abner
31 Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, (AC)“Tear your clothes, (AD)gird yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn for Abner.” And King David followed the coffin. 32 So they buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner, and all the people wept. 33 And the king sang a lament over Abner and said:
“Should Abner die as a (AE)fool dies?
34 Your hands were not bound
Nor your feet put into fetters;
As a man falls before wicked men, so you fell.”
Then all the people wept over him again.
35 And when all the people came (AF)to persuade David to eat food while it was still day, David took an oath, saying, (AG)“God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else (AH)till the sun goes down!” 36 Now all the people took note of it, and it pleased them, since whatever the king did pleased all the people. 37 For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it had not been the king’s intent to kill Abner the son of Ner. 38 Then the king said to his servants, “Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel? 39 And I am weak today, though anointed king; and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, (AI)are too harsh for me. (AJ)The Lord shall repay the evildoer according to his wickedness.”

Abner pentru David

Fă legământ cu mine, şi mâna mea te va ajuta să întorci la tine pe tot Israelul”. 13 El a răspuns: „Bine, voi face legământ cu tine, dar îţi cer un lucru: să nu-mi vezi faţa(K) decât dacă-mi vei aduce mai întâi pe Mical(L), fata lui Saul, când vei veni la mine”. 14 Şi David a trimis soli lui Iş-Boşet, fiul lui Saul, să-i spună: „Dă-mi pe nevastă-mea Mical, cu care m-am logodit pentru(M) o sută de prepuţuri de la filisteni”. 15 Iş-Boşet a trimis s-o ia de la bărbatul ei, Paltiel(N), fiul lui Laiş. 16 Şi bărbatul ei a mers după ea plângând până la Bahurim(O). Atunci, Abner i-a zis: „Pleacă şi întoarce-te!” Şi el s-a întors. 17 Abner a stat de vorbă cu bătrânii lui Israel şi le-a zis: „Odinioară voi doreaţi să aveţi împărat pe David; 18 puneţi-l acum, căci Domnul(P) a zis despre el: ‘Prin robul Meu David voi izbăvi pe poporul Meu Israel din mâna filistenilor şi din mâna tuturor vrăjmaşilor lui’.” 19 Abner a vorbit şi lui Beniamin şi s-a dus să spună în auzul lui David la Hebron ce hotărâse Israel şi toată casa lui(Q) Beniamin. 20 A ajuns la David în Hebron, însoţit de douăzeci de oameni, şi David a dat un ospăţ în cinstea lui Abner şi a celor care erau cu el. 21 Abner a zis lui David: „Mă voi scula şi voi pleca să(R) strâng tot Israelul la domnul meu, împăratul, ca să facă legământ cu tine şi să domneşti(S) în totul după dorinţa ta”. Abner este omorât de Ioab
22 Ioab şi oamenii lui David s-au întors de la urmărirea unei cete şi au adus cu ei o mare pradă. Abner nu mai era la David, în Hebron, căci David îi dăduse drumul şi plecase în pace. 23 Când a venit Ioab cu toată ceata lui, i s-a spus: „Abner, fiul lui Ner, a venit la împărat, care i-a dat drumul şi s-a dus în pace”. 24 Ioab s-a dus la împărat şi a zis: „Ce ai făcut? Abner a venit la tine. Pentru ce i-ai dat drumul şi l-ai lăsat să plece? 25 Tu cunoşti pe Abner, fiul lui Ner! A venit să te înşele, ca să-ţi pândească paşii(T) şi să ştie tot ce faci.” 26 Şi Ioab, după ce a plecat de la David, a trimis pe urmele lui Abner nişte soli care l-au adus înapoi de la fântâna fără apă Sira: David nu ştia nimic. 27 Când s-a întors Abner la Hebron, Ioab l-a tras deoparte(U) în mijlocul porţii ca să-i vorbească în taină şi l-a lovit acolo în pântece(V) şi l-a omorât, ca să răzbune moartea fratelui său Asael(W).
Plângerea lui David pentru Abner
28 David a aflat apoi şi a zis: „Nevinovat sunt eu şi împărăţia mea pe vecie înaintea Domnului de sângele lui Abner, fiul lui Ner. 29 Sângele acesta să cadă(X) asupra lui Ioab şi asupra întregii case a tatălui său! Totdeauna să fie în casa lui Ioab cineva atins de o scurgere(Y) de sămânţă sau de lepră, sau care să se rezeme în cârjă, sau să cadă ucis de sabie, sau să ducă lipsă de pâine!” 30 Astfel, Ioab şi fratele său Abişai au omorât pe Abner pentru că omorâse pe fratele lor Asael(Z) în lupta de la Gabaon. 31 David a zis lui Ioab şi întregului popor care era cu el: „Rupeţi-vă(AA) hainele, încingeţi-vă(AB) cu saci şi bociţi-vă înaintea lui Abner!” Şi împăratul David mergea în urma sicriului. 32 Au îngropat pe Abner la Hebron. Împăratul a ridicat glasul şi a plâns la mormântul lui Abner, şi tot poporul plângea.
33 Împăratul a făcut următoarea cântare de jale pentru Abner şi a zis:
„Să moară Abner cum moare(AC) un mişel?
34 N-aveai nici mâinile legate,
Nici picioarele puse în lanţuri
Ai căzut cum cade cineva înaintea celor răi!”
Şi tot poporul a plâns şi mai mult după Abner.
35 Tot poporul s-a apropiat de David ca(AD) să-l facă să mănânce ceva cât era încă ziuă, dar David a jurat zicând: „Să mă pedepsească(AE) Dumnezeu cu toată asprimea dacă voi gusta pâine sau altceva înainte de(AF) apusul soarelui!” 36 Lucrul acesta a fost cunoscut şi plăcut la tot poporul; toţi au găsit că era bine ce făcuse împăratul. 37 Tot poporul şi tot Israelul au înţeles în ziua aceea că Abner, fiul lui Ner, nu fusese ucis din porunca împăratului. 38 Împăratul a zis slujitorilor săi: „Nu ştiţi că o căpetenie, un om mare, a căzut astăzi în Israel? 39 Eu sunt încă slab, măcar că am primit ungerea împărătească, şi oamenii aceştia, fiii Ţeruiei, sunt(AG) prea puternici pentru mine. Domnul(AH) să răsplătească după răutatea celui ce a făcut răul!”
