24 Una vez más, la ira del Señor se encendió contra Israel, así que el Señor incitó a David contra el pueblo al decirle: «Haz un censo de Israel y de Judá».
2 Entonces el rey ordenó a Joab y a los comandantes del ejército que lo acompañaban:[a]
—Vayan por todas las tribus de Israel, desde Dan hasta Berseba, y hagan un censo militar, para que yo sepa cuántos pueden servir en el ejército.
3 Joab respondió al rey:
—¡Que el Señor su Dios multiplique cien veces las tropas, y le permita a mi señor el rey llegar a verlo con sus propios ojos! Pero ¿por qué mi señor el rey desea hacer tal cosa?
4 Sin embargo, la orden del rey prevaleció sobre la opinión de Joab y de los comandantes del ejército, de modo que salieron de su audiencia con el rey para llevar a cabo el censo militar de Israel.
5 Cruzaron el Jordán y acamparon cerca de Aroer, al sur del pueblo que está en el valle, después de lo cual siguieron hacia Gad y Jazer. 6 Fueron por Galaad y por el territorio de Tajtín Jodsí, hasta llegar a Dan Jaán y a los alrededores de Sidón. 7 Siguieron hacia la fortaleza de Tiro y recorrieron todas las ciudades de los heveos y los cananeos. Finalmente, llegaron a Berseba, en el Néguev de Judá.
8 Al cabo de nueve meses y veinte días, y después de haber recorrido todo el país, regresaron a Jerusalén.
9 Joab entregó al rey los resultados del censo militar: En Israel había ochocientos mil hombres que podían servir en el ejército, y en Judá, quinientos mil.
10 Entonces le remordió a David la conciencia por haber realizado este censo militar y dijo al Señor: «He cometido un pecado muy grande. He actuado como un necio. Yo te ruego, Señor, que perdones la maldad de tu siervo».
11 Por la mañana, antes de que David se levantara, la palabra del Señor vino al profeta Gad, vidente de David, y le dio este mensaje: 12 «Ve y dile a David que así dice el Señor: “Te doy a escoger entre estos tres castigos: dime cuál de ellos quieres que te imponga”». 13 Entonces Gad fue a ver a David y le preguntó:
—¿Qué prefieres: que vengan tres[b] años de hambre en el país, que tus enemigos te persigan durante tres meses y tengas que huir de ellos o que el país sufra tres días de plaga? Piénsalo bien y dime qué debo responderle al que me ha enviado.
14 —¡Estoy entre la espada y la pared! —respondió David—. Pero es mejor que caigamos en las manos del Señor, porque su compasión es grande, y no que yo caiga en las manos de los hombres.
15 Por lo tanto, el Señor mandó contra Israel una plaga que duró desde esa mañana hasta el tiempo señalado; y en todo el país, desde Dan hasta Berseba, murieron setenta mil personas. 16 Entonces el ángel del Señor, que estaba en el lugar donde Arauna el jebuseo limpiaba el trigo, extendió su mano hacia Jerusalén para destruirla. Pero el Señor se lamentó del castigo que había enviado y dijo al ángel destructor: «¡Basta! ¡Detén tu mano!».
17 David, al ver que el ángel destruía a la gente, dijo al Señor: «¿Qué culpa tienen estas ovejas? ¡Soy yo el que ha pecado! ¡Soy yo el que ha hecho mal! ¡Descarga tu mano sobre mí y sobre mi familia!».
David construye un altar(B)
18 Ese mismo día, Gad volvió adonde estaba David y le dijo: «Sube y construye un altar para el Señor en el lugar donde Arauna el jebuseo limpia el trigo».
19 David se puso en camino, tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado por medio de Gad. 20 Arauna se asomó y al ver que el rey y sus oficiales se acercaban, salió a recibirlo y rostro en tierra se postró delante de él.
21 —Mi señor y rey —dijo Arauna—, ¿a qué debo el honor de su visita?
—Quiero comprarte el lugar donde limpias el trigo —respondió David— y construir un altar al Señor, a fin de que se detenga la plaga que está afligiendo al pueblo.
22 —Tome mi señor el rey lo que mejor le parezca y preséntelo como ofrenda. Aquí hay bueyes para el holocausto; hay también trillos y yuntas que puede usar como leña. 23 Todo esto se lo doy a usted. ¡Que el Señor su Dios vea a Su Majestad con agrado!
24 Pero el rey respondió a Arauna:
—Eso no puede ser. No voy a ofrecer al Señor mi Dios holocaustos que nada me cuesten. Te lo compraré todo por su precio justo.
Fue así como David compró el lugar donde se limpia el trigo y los bueyes por cincuenta siclos[c] de plata. 25 Allí construyó un altar al Señor y ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión. Entonces el Señor tuvo piedad del país y se detuvo la plaga que estaba afligiendo a Israel.

24 Volvió a encenderse la ira de Jehová contra Israel, e incitó a David contra ellos a que dijese: Ve, haz un censo de Israel y de Judá. 2 Y dijo el rey a Joab, general del ejército que estaba con él: Recorre ahora todas las tribus de Israel, desde Dan hasta Beerseba, y haz un censo del pueblo, para que yo sepa el número de la gente. 3 Joab respondió al rey: Añada Jehová tu Dios al pueblo cien veces tanto como son, y que lo vea mi señor el rey; mas ¿por qué se complace en esto mi señor el rey? 4 Pero la palabra del rey prevaleció sobre Joab y sobre los capitanes del ejército. 10 Después que David hubo censado al pueblo, le pesó en su corazón; y dijo David a Jehová: Yo he pecado gravemente por haber hecho esto; mas ahora, oh Jehová, te ruego que quites el pecado de tu siervo, porque yo he hecho muy neciamente. 11 Y por la mañana, cuando David se hubo levantado, vino palabra de Jehová al profeta Gad, vidente de David, diciendo: 12 Ve y di a David: Así ha dicho Jehová: Tres cosas te ofrezco; tú escogerás una de ellas, para que yo la haga. 13 Vino, pues, Gad a David, y se lo hizo saber, y le dijo: ¿Quieres que te vengan siete años de hambre en tu tierra? ¿o que huyas tres meses delante de tus enemigos y que ellos te persigan? ¿o que tres días haya peste en tu tierra? Piensa ahora, y mira qué responderé al que me ha enviado. 14 Entonces David dijo a Gad: En grande angustia estoy; caigamos ahora en mano de Jehová, porque sus misericordias son muchas, mas no caiga yo en manos de hombres.
15 Y Jehová envió la peste sobre Israel desde la mañana hasta el tiempo señalado; y murieron del pueblo, desde Dan hasta Beerseba, setenta mil hombres. 16 Y cuando el ángel extendió su mano sobre Jerusalén para destruirla, Jehová se arrepintió de aquel mal, y dijo al ángel que destruía al pueblo: Basta ahora; detén tu mano. Y el ángel de Jehová estaba junto a la era de Arauna jebuseo. 17 Y David dijo a Jehová, cuando vio al ángel que destruía al pueblo: Yo pequé, yo hice la maldad; ¿qué hicieron estas ovejas? Te ruego que tu mano se vuelva contra mí, y contra la casa de mi padre.
18 Y Gad vino a David aquel día, y le dijo: Sube, y levanta un altar a Jehová en la era de Arauna jebuseo. 19 Subió David, conforme al dicho de Gad, según había mandado Jehová; 20 y Arauna miró, y vio al rey y a sus siervos que venían hacia él. Saliendo entonces Arauna, se inclinó delante del rey, rostro a tierra. 21 Y Arauna dijo: ¿Por qué viene mi señor el rey a su siervo? Y David respondió: Para comprar de ti la era, a fin de edificar un altar a Jehová, para que cese la mortandad del pueblo. 22 Y Arauna dijo a David: Tome y ofrezca mi señor el rey lo que bien le pareciere; he aquí bueyes para el holocausto, y los trillos y los yugos de los bueyes para leña. 23 Todo esto, oh rey, Arauna lo da al rey. Luego dijo Arauna al rey: Jehová tu Dios te sea propicio. 24 Y el rey dijo a Arauna: No, sino por precio te lo compraré; porque no ofreceré a Jehová mi Dios holocaustos que no me cuesten nada. Entonces David compró la era y los bueyes por cincuenta siclos de plata. 25 Y edificó allí David un altar a Jehová, y sacrificó holocaustos y ofrendas de paz; y Jehová oyó las súplicas de la tierra, y cesó la plaga en Israel.

The Census Taken
24 Now again the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and [a]He incited David against them to say, “Go, [b]count [the people of] Israel and Judah.” 2 So the king said to Joab the commander of the army who was with him, “Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan [in the north] to Beersheba [in the south], and conduct a census of the people, so that I may know the number of the people.” 3 But Joab said to the king, “May the Lord your God add to the people a hundred times as many as there are, and let the eyes of my lord the king see it; but why does my lord the king [c]want to do this thing?” 4 Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and the commanders of the army. So they went from the king’s presence to take a census of the people of Israel. 5 They crossed over the Jordan and camped in Aroer, on the south side of the city which is in the middle of the river valley [of the Arnon] toward Gad, and on toward Jazer. 6 Then they came to Gilead and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi, and they came to Dan-jaan and around to Sidon, 7 and they came to the stronghold of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites, and they went out to the south of Judah, to Beersheba. 8 So when they had gone about through all the land [taking the census], they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. 9 And Joab gave the sum of the census of the people to the king. In Israel there were 800,000 valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were 500,000.
10 But David’s heart (conscience) troubled him after he had counted the people. David said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, O Lord, please take away the sin of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.” 11 When David got up in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying, 12 “Go and say to David, ‘Thus says the Lord, “I am giving you three choices; select one of them for yourself, and I will do it to you.”’” 13 So Gad came to David and told him, and said to him, “Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your enemies as they pursue you? Or shall there be three days of pestilence (plague) in your land? Now consider this and decide what answer I shall return to Him who sent me.” 14 Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for His mercies are great, but do not let me fall into the hands of man.”
Pestilence Sent
15 So the Lord sent a pestilence (plague) [lasting three days] upon Israel from the morning until the appointed time, and seventy thousand men of the people from Dan to Beersheba died. 16 When the [avenging] angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the disaster and said to the angel who destroyed the people, “It is enough! Now relax your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 17 When David saw the angel who was striking down the people, he spoke to the Lord and said, “Behold, I [alone] am the one who has sinned and done wrong; but these sheep (people of Israel), what have they done [to deserve this]? Please let Your hand be [only] against me and my father’s house (family).”
David Builds an Altar
18 Then Gad [the prophet] came to David that day and said to him, “Go up, set up an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite [where you saw the angel].” 19 So David went up according to Gad’s word, as the Lord commanded. 20 Araunah looked down and saw the king and his servants crossing over toward him; and he went out and bowed before the king with his face toward the ground. 21 Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” And David said, “To buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the Lord, so that the plague may be held back from the people.” 22 Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up whatever seems good to him. Look, here are oxen for the burnt offering, and threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood. 23 All of this, O king, Araunah gives to the king.” And Araunah said to the king, “May the Lord your God be favorable to you.” 24 But the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will certainly buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God which cost me nothing.” So David purchased the [d]threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. 25 David built an altar to the Lord there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the Lord was moved [to compassion] by [David’s] prayer for the land, and the plague was held back from Israel.

- 2 Samuel 24:1 See 1 Chr 21:1. As in the case of Paul’s thorn in the flesh (2 Cor 12:7; cf 1 Cor 5:5), God sometimes accomplishes His purposes by allowing Satan to inflict injury or cause trouble.
- 2 Samuel 24:1 Ordinarily taking a census would have been a routine procedure for a nation as a way of assessing taxes or conscripting and assigning men to an army. But in Israel none of this was necessary unless it was commanded by God, and David’s action was the product of ego and an uncharacteristic shift of trust and dependence from God to human resources (as Joab suspected, v 3). To his credit, David eventually realized this and came to God in repentance.

David Enrolls the Fighting Men(A)
24 Again(B) the anger of the Lord burned against Israel,(C) and he incited David against them, saying, “Go and take a census of(D) Israel and Judah.”
2 So the king said to Joab(E) and the army commanders[a] with him, “Go throughout the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beersheba(F) and enroll(G) the fighting men, so that I may know how many there are.”
3 But Joab(H) replied to the king, “May the Lord your God multiply the troops a hundred times over,(I) and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?”
4 The king’s word, however, overruled Joab and the army commanders; so they left the presence of the king to enroll the fighting men of Israel.
5 After crossing the Jordan, they camped near Aroer,(J) south of the town in the gorge, and then went through Gad and on to Jazer.(K) 6 They went to Gilead and the region of Tahtim Hodshi, and on to Dan Jaan and around toward Sidon.(L) 7 Then they went toward the fortress of Tyre(M) and all the towns of the Hivites(N) and Canaanites. Finally, they went on to Beersheba(O) in the Negev(P) of Judah.
8 After they had gone through the entire land, they came back to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.
9 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to the king: In Israel there were eight hundred thousand able-bodied men who could handle a sword, and in Judah five hundred thousand.(Q)
10 David was conscience-stricken(R) after he had counted the fighting men, and he said to the Lord, “I have sinned(S) greatly in what I have done. Now, Lord, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.(T)”
11 Before David got up the next morning, the word of the Lord had come to Gad(U) the prophet, David’s seer:(V) 12 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’”
13 So Gad went to David and said to him, “Shall there come on you three[b] years of famine(W) in your land? Or three months of fleeing from your enemies while they pursue you? Or three days of plague(X) in your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”
14 David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy(Y) is great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”
15 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel from that morning until the end of the time designated, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beersheba died.(Z) 16 When the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the Lord relented(AA) concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was afflicting the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord(AB) was then at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
17 When David saw the angel who was striking down the people, he said to the Lord, “I have sinned; I, the shepherd,[c] have done wrong. These are but sheep.(AC) What have they done?(AD) Let your hand fall on me and my family.”(AE)

18 On that day Gad went to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah(AG) the Jebusite.” 19 So David went up, as the Lord had commanded through Gad. 20 When Araunah looked and saw the king and his officials coming toward him, he went out and bowed down before the king with his face to the ground.
21 Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?”
“To buy your threshing floor,” David answered, “so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped.”(AH)
22 Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take whatever he wishes and offer it up. Here are oxen(AI) for the burnt offering, and here are threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood. 23 Your Majesty, Araunah[d] gives(AJ) all this to the king.” Araunah also said to him, “May the Lord your God accept you.”
24 But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”(AK)
So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels[e](AL) of silver for them. 25 David built an altar(AM) to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then the Lord answered his prayer(AN) in behalf of the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.
