Héroes en el ejército de David(A)
8 Estos son los nombres de los soldados más valientes de David:
Joseb Basébet el tacmonita, que era el principal de los tres más famosos, en una batalla mató con su lanza[a] a ochocientos hombres.
9 En segundo lugar estaba Eleazar, hijo de Dodó, el ajojita, que también era uno de los tres más famosos. Estuvo con David cuando desafiaron a los filisteos que se habían concentrado en Pasdamín[b] para la batalla. Los israelitas se retiraron, 10 pero Eleazar se mantuvo firme y derrotó a tantos filisteos que, por la fatiga, la mano se le quedó pegada a la espada. Aquel día el Señor dio una gran victoria. Las tropas regresaron adonde estaba Eleazar, pero solo para tomar los despojos.
11 El tercer valiente era Sama, hijo de Agué, el ararita. En cierta ocasión, los filisteos formaron sus tropas[c] en un campo sembrado de lentejas. El ejército de Israel huyó ante ellos, 12 pero Sama se plantó en medio del campo y lo defendió, derrotando a los filisteos. El Señor les dio una gran victoria.
13 En otra ocasión, tres de los treinta más valientes fueron a la cueva de Adulán, donde estaba David. Era el comienzo de la siega y una tropa filistea acampaba en el valle de Refayin. 14 David se encontraba en su fortaleza. En ese tiempo había una guarnición filistea en Belén. 15 Como David tenía mucha sed, exclamó: «¡Ojalá pudiera yo beber agua del pozo que está a la entrada de Belén!». 16 Entonces los tres valientes se metieron en el campamento filisteo, sacaron agua del pozo de Belén y se la llevaron a David. Pero él no quiso beberla, sino que derramó el agua en honor al Señor 17 y declaró solemnemente: «¡Que el Señor me libre de beberla! ¡Eso sería como beber la sangre de hombres que han puesto su vida en peligro!». Y no quiso beberla.
Tales hazañas hicieron estos tres héroes.
18 Abisay, el hermano de Joab, hijo de Sarvia, estaba al mando de los tres y ganó fama entre ellos. En cierta ocasión, lanza en mano atacó y mató a trescientos hombres. 19 Se destacó más que los tres valientes y llegó a ser su comandante, pero no fue contado entre ellos.
20 Benaías, hijo de Joyadá, era un guerrero de Cabsel que realizó muchas hazañas. Derrotó a dos de los mejores hombres[d] de Moab y, en otra ocasión, cuando estaba nevando, se metió en una cisterna y mató un león. 21 También derrotó a un egipcio de gran estatura. El egipcio empuñaba una lanza, pero Benaías, que no llevaba más que un palo, le arrebató la lanza y lo mató con ella. 22 Tales hazañas hizo Benaías, hijo de Joyadá. También él ganó fama como los tres valientes, 23 pero no fue contado entre ellos, aunque se destacó más que los treinta valientes. Además, David lo puso al mando de su guardia real.
24 Entre los treinta valientes estaban:

Eljanán, hijo de Dodó, que era de Belén;

32 Elijaba, el salbonita;
los hijos de Jasén;

8 Estos son los nombres de los valientes que tuvo David: Joseb-basebet el tacmonita, principal de los capitanes; este era Adino el eznita, que mató a ochocientos hombres en una ocasión.
9 Después de este, Eleazar hijo de Dodo, ahohíta, uno de los tres valientes que estaban con David cuando desafiaron a los filisteos que se habían reunido allí para la batalla, y se habían alejado los hombres de Israel. 10 Este se levantó e hirió a los filisteos hasta que su mano se cansó, y quedó pegada su mano a la espada. Los filisteos se habían reunido en Lehi, donde había un pequeño terreno lleno de lentejas, y el pueblo había huido delante de los filisteos. 12 Él entonces se paró en medio de aquel terreno y lo defendió, y mató a los filisteos; y Jehová dio una gran victoria. 13 Y tres de los treinta jefes descendieron y vinieron en tiempo de la siega a David en la cueva de Adulam; y el campamento de los filisteos estaba en el valle de Refaim. 14 David entonces estaba en el lugar fuerte, y había en Belén una guarnición de los filisteos. 15 Y David dijo con vehemencia: ¡Quién me diera a beber del agua del pozo de Belén que está junto a la puerta! 16 Entonces los tres valientes irrumpieron por el campamento de los filisteos, y sacaron agua del pozo de Belén que estaba junto a la puerta; y tomaron, y la trajeron a David; mas él no la quiso beber, sino que la derramó para Jehová, diciendo: 17 Lejos sea de mí, oh Jehová, que yo haga esto. ¿He de beber yo la sangre de los varones que fueron con peligro de su vida? 18 Y Abisai hermano de Joab, hijo de Sarvia, fue el principal de los treinta. Este alzó su lanza contra trescientos, a quienes mató, y ganó renombre con los tres. 19 Él era el más renombrado de los treinta, y llegó a ser su jefe; mas no igualó a los tres primeros.
20 Después, Benaía hijo de Joiada, hijo de un varón esforzado, grande en proezas, de Cabseel. Este mató a dos leones de Moab; y él mismo descendió y mató a un león en medio de un foso cuando estaba nevando. 21 También mató él a un egipcio, hombre de gran estatura; y tenía el egipcio una lanza en su mano, pero descendió contra él con un palo, y arrebató al egipcio la lanza de la mano, y lo mató con su propia lanza. 22 Esto hizo Benaía hijo de Joiada, y ganó renombre con los tres valientes. 23 Fue renombrado entre los treinta, pero no igualó a los tres primeros. Y lo puso David como jefe de su guardia personal.

23 Now these are the last words of David.
David the son of Jesse declares,
The man who was raised on high declares,
The anointed of the God of Jacob,
And the sweet psalmist of Israel,

“The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me,
And His word was on my tongue.
3
“The God of Israel,
The Rock of Israel spoke to me,
‘He who rules over men righteously,
Who rules in the fear of God,
4
Is like the morning light when the sun rises,
A morning without clouds,
When the fresh grass springs out of the earth
Through sunshine after rain.’
5
“Truly is not my house so [blessed] with God?
For He has made an everlasting covenant with me,
Ordered in all things, and secured.
For will He not cause to grow and prosper
All my salvation and my every wish?
Will He not make it grow and prosper?
6
“But the wicked and worthless are all to be thrown away like thorns,
Because they cannot be taken with the hand;
7
“But the man who touches them
Must be armed with iron and the shaft of a spear,
And they are utterly burned and consumed by fire in their place.”
His Mighty Men
8 These are the names of the mighty men (warriors) whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth, a Tahchemonite, chief of the [a]captains, also called Adino the Eznite (spear) because of the [b]eight hundred men killed [by him] at one time.(A) 9 Next to him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the son of Ahohi. He was one of the three mighty men with David when they taunted and defied the Philistines assembled there for battle, and the men of Israel had gone. 10 Eleazar stood up and struck down the Philistines until his hand was weary and clung to the sword. The Lord brought about a great victory that day; the people returned after him only to take the spoil [of the slain].
11 Next to Eleazar was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. The Philistines were gathered into an army where there was a plot of ground full of lentils, and the people [of Israel] fled from the Philistines. 12 But he took his stand in the center of the plot and defended it and struck down the Philistines; and the Lord brought about a great victory.
13 Then three of the thirty chief men went down and came to David at harvest time in the cave of Adullam, while an army of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. 14 David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. 15 And David had a craving and said, “Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!” 16 So the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, and drew water from the well of Bethlehem by the gate, and carried and brought it to David. But he would not drink it, but poured it out [in worship] to the Lord. 17 And he said, “Far be it from me, O Lord, that I should drink this. [Is it not the same as] the blood of the men who went at the risk of their lives?” So he would not drink it. These things the [c]three mighty men did.
18 Now Abishai the brother of Joab the son of Zeruiah was chief of the [d]thirty. He wielded his spear against three hundred men and killed them, and gained a reputation beside the three. 19 He was the most honored of the thirty, so he became their commander; however, he did not attain to the [greatness of the] three.
20 Then Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many notable acts, killed two [famous] warriors of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in the middle of a pit on a snowy day. 21 And he killed an Egyptian, an impressive and handsome man. The Egyptian had a spear in his hand, but Benaiah went down to him with a club, snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed the man with his own spear. 22 These things Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did, and gained a reputation beside the three mighty men. 23 He was honored among the thirty, but he did not attain to the [greatness of the] three. David appointed him over his guard.
24 Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; then Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, 25 Shammah of Harod, Elika of Harod, 26 Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh of Tekoa, 27 Abiezer of Anathoth, Mebunnai the Hushathite, 28 Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai of Netophah, 29 Heleb the son of Baanah of Netophah, Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the Benjamites, 30 Benaiah of Pirathon, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash, 31 Abi-albon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite, 32 Eliahba of Shaalbon, the sons of Jashen, Jonathan, 33 Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Ararite, 34 Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai the son of Maacah, Eliam the son of Ahithophel of Giloh, 35 Hezro (Hezrai) of Carmel, Paarai the Arbite, 36 Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite, 37 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai of Beeroth, armor bearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah, 38 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, 39 Uriah the Hittite—thirty-seven in all.

- 2 Samuel 23:8 1 Chr 11:11 lists the number as three hundred, and the number here is thought by some to be a textual error or exaggeration. But there is nothing in the text to suggest a scribal error, and if 800 slain by one man seems incredible, 300—though a much smaller number—still strains credibility. Perhaps divine intervention is the explanation (cf v 12), or Josheb was actually commanding other men but was credited with the victory as if he were alone, a common way to describe military victories.
