Venganza de los gabaonitas
21 Durante el reinado de David, hubo escasez de alimentos por tres años. David oró al SEÑOR, y el SEÑOR le contestó: «Saúl y su familia asesina[a] son la causa de esta escasez de alimentos por haber matado a los gabaonitas». 2 Los gabaonitas no eran israelitas, sino amorreos, y los israelitas habían prometido no hacerles daño,[b] pero Saúl trató de matarlos debido a los celos que tenía del pueblo de Israel y Judá. El rey David reunió a los gabaonitas 3 y les preguntó:
—¿Qué puedo hacer por ustedes? ¿Cómo puedo reparar el daño del pecado de Israel para que ustedes bendigan al pueblo del SEÑOR?
4 Los gabaonitas le contestaron:
—No hay suficiente oro ni plata para que la familia de Saúl pague por lo que hizo. Pero nosotros no tenemos el derecho de matar a nadie en Israel.
David dijo:
—¿Entonces, qué puedo hacer por ustedes?
5 Los gabaonitas respondieron:
—Saúl hizo planes contra nosotros. Trató de destruir a nuestra gente que vivía en la tierra de Israel. 6 Entréganos siete de los hijos de Saúl, el elegido del SEÑOR, para que los ejecutemos ante el SEÑOR en el monte Guibeá de Saúl.[c]
El rey dijo:
—Se los entregaré.
7 Pero el rey protegió al hijo de Jonatán, Mefiboset. Jonatán era hijo de Saúl, pero como David le había hecho una promesa a Jonatán[d] con el SEÑOR como testigo, el rey no los dejó hacerle ningún daño a Mefiboset[e]. 8 David les entregó a Armoní y Mefiboset hijos de Saúl y su esposa Rizpa, hija de Aja. Saúl también tenía una hija llamada Merab, quien estaba casada con Adriel hijo de Barzilay, el mejolatita. Así que David tomó a los cinco hijos de Merab y Adriel, 9 y les entregó estos siete hombres a los gabaonitas, quienes los llevaron al monte y los ejecutaron ante el SEÑOR. Así murieron al mismo tiempo los siete durante el principio de la cosecha de cebada.
10 Entonces Rizpa hija de Ayá tomó una tela de luto y la puso sobre la roca[f]. Allí se quedó la tela desde que empezó la cosecha hasta que llegaron las lluvias. Rizpa vigilaba los cuerpos día y noche. De día, no dejaba que se acercaran las aves de rapiña y de noche no dejaba que se acercaran los animales salvajes. 11 Entonces la gente le dijo a David lo que estaba haciendo la concubina de Saúl. 12 Entonces David recogió los restos de Saúl y Jonatán que estaban en Jabés de Galaad. Los hombres de Jabés de Galaad habían tomado los restos de Saúl y Jonatán cuando los mataron en Guilboa. Los filisteos habían colgado sus cuerpos en una pared en Betsán[g], pero los hombres de Jabés de Galaad habían ido ahí y se los robaron.
13 David recogió los restos de Saúl y Jonatán que estaban en Jabés Galaad junto con los cuerpos de los siete hombres que estaban colgados. 14 Sepultaron los restos de Saúl y su hijo Jonatán en el área de Benjamín y los sepultaron en uno de los túneles en la tumba de Quis, papá de Saúl. Dios escuchó las oraciones del pueblo en esa tierra porque hacían todo lo que el rey les ordenaba.
Guerra con los filisteos
(1 Cr 20:4-8)
15 Los filisteos atacaron a Israel, así que David y sus hombres salieron a pelear contra ellos, pero David se sintió muy cansado y débil. 16 Entonces Isbibenob, uno de los soldados consagrados al dios Rafá, pensó matar a David. Tenía una espada nueva y su lanza pesaba más de 3 kilos.[h] 17 Pero Abisay hijo de Sarvia le salvó la vida a David y mató al filisteo. Entonces los hombres de David le rogaron: «De ahora en adelante ¡qué su Majestad nunca vaya con nosotros en batalla, no sea que Israel pierda su mejor líder!»
18 Después hubo otra batalla con los filisteos en Gob. Sibecay el jusatita mató a Saf, otro de los soldados consagrados al dios Rafá.[i] 19 De nuevo hubo otra batalla en Gob contra los filisteos. Eljanán hijo de Yaré Oreguín de Belén mató a Goliat el guitita[j]. Su lanza era tan grande como el rodillo de un telar. 20 Hubo otra batalla en Gat. Había allí otro soldado consagrado al dios Rafá que tenía 24 dedos, seis en cada mano y seis en cada pie. 21 Este hombre se puso a desafiar a los israelitas y a burlarse de ellos, por lo cual Jonatán hijo de Simá, que era hermano de David, lo mató. 22 David y sus hombres mataron a esos cuatro soldados consagrados al dios Rafá de Gat.

21 Durante el reinado de David pasaron tres años en que no hubo suficiente comida. David le preguntó a Dios por qué los trataba tan mal, y Dios le respondió: «Si ahora ustedes no tienen qué comer, la culpa es de Saúl y de su familia, pues él mató a muchos gabaonitas».
2-3 Los gabaonitas no eran israelitas; eran parientes de los amorreos, pero en los días de Josué, los israelitas habían hecho con ellos un pacto de paz. Sin embargo, Saúl había tratado de destruirlos para que Israel y Judá controlaran todo el territorio.
Por eso David llamó a los gabaonitas y les dijo:
—¿Qué puedo hacer para reparar el daño que Saúl les hizo, y para que ustedes le pidan a Dios que nos bendiga?
4 Los gabaonitas le contestaron:
—Nosotros no queremos dinero, ni tampoco queremos que muera ningún israelita.
El rey David volvió entonces a preguntarles:
—Pues, ¿qué quieren que haga por ustedes?
5-6 Y ellos le respondieron:
—Dios eligió a Saúl como rey de Israel, pero él trató de destruirnos. Queremos que usted nos entregue a siete de los familiares de Saúl. Vamos a matarlos frente al santuario de Dios, que está en Guibeá, pueblo de Saúl.
El rey David se comprometió a entregarles a siete familiares de Saúl. 7 Debido al juramento que ante Dios David le había hecho a Jonatán, le perdonó la vida a su hijo Mefi-bóset. 8 Sin embargo, apresó a Armoní y Mefi-bóset, los dos hijos que Saúl había tenido con Rispá, la hija de Aiá. Y también les entregó a cinco nietos de Saúl, hijos de su hija Merab y de Adriel, el hijo de Barzilai, de Meholá.
9 Los gabaonitas mataron a estos siete descendientes de Saúl al mismo tiempo. Los mataron en un cerro, frente al santuario de Dios. Esto sucedió durante la cosecha de la cebada.
10 En señal de tristeza, Rispá, la viuda de Saúl, se vistió con ropas ásperas, y se acostó sobre una piedra, cerca de los cuerpos de los siete muertos. De día y de noche alejaba de los cuerpos a los buitres y a los animales salvajes, y se quedó allí desde el día en que murieron hasta el día en que llegaron las lluvias.
11-12 Años atrás, cuando los filisteos mataron a Saúl y a Jonatán en Guilboa, habían colgado sus cuerpos en la plaza pública de Bet-sán. Sin embargo, la gente de Jabés se robó los cuerpos y los enterró en su ciudad. Por eso ahora, al saber David lo que estaba haciendo Rispá, fue a Jabés de Galaad para pedir que le entregaran los huesos de Saúl y Jonatán.
13 David juntó los huesos de Saúl y Jonatán con los huesos de los siete muertos; 14 luego mandó que los enterraran juntos en la tumba del padre de Saúl. Esa tumba estaba en Selá, en la región de Benjamín. Y tan pronto como se cumplieron las órdenes del rey David, Dios escuchó sus oraciones y bendijo al país.
Guerras contra los filisteos
15 Los filisteos volvieron a declararle la guerra a Israel, así que David fue con su ejército a pelear contra ellos. Como David ya estaba muy cansado, 16 un gigante trató de matarlo. El gigante se llamaba Isbí-benot, y la punta de su lanza pesaba más de tres kilos; tenía además una espada nueva.
17 Abisai corrió a ayudar a David, y atacó al filisteo y lo mató. Por su parte, los hombres de David le hicieron jurar que ya no saldría a las batallas, pues no querían perder a su líder y quedarse sin su guía.
Peleas contra gigantes (1 Cr 20.4-8)
18 Después de esto, hubo en Gob otra batalla contra los filisteos. Allí, Sibecai el husatita mató a un gigante llamado Saf.
19 Tiempo después, hubo también en Gob otra batalla contra los filisteos. Allí Elhanán hijo de Jaaré-oreguim, el de Belén, mató a Goliat, un hombre de Gat que tenía una lanza enorme.
20 Después hubo otra batalla en Gat. Allí, un gigante que tenía seis dedos en cada mano y en cada pie 21 desafió a los israelitas. Pero lo mató Jonatán, que era hijo de Simei y sobrino de David.
22 Estos cuatro gigantes eran de la familia de Refá, el de Gat, pero David y sus oficiales los mataron.

21 Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the Lord. And the Lord answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.
2 And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)
3 Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the Lord?
4 And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you.
5 And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts of Israel,
6 Let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto the Lord in Gibeah of Saul, whom the Lord did choose. And the king said, I will give them.
7 But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the Lord's oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.
8 But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite:
9 And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the hill before the Lord: and they fell all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.
10 And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
11 And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.
12 And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabeshgilead, which had stolen them from the street of Bethshan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa:
13 And he brought up from thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son; and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged.
14 And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.
15 Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint.
16 And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.
17 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.
18 And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant.
19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.
20 And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.
21 And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimeah the brother of David slew him.
22 These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.
