The Gibeonites Punish Saul’s Family
21 During the time David was king, there was a time of hunger. It continued for three years. So David prayed to the Lord.
The Lord answered, “Saul and his family of murderers are the reason for this time of hunger. It has come because Saul killed the Gibeonites.” 2 (Now the Gibeonites were not Israelites. They were a group of Amorites who were left alive. The Israelites had promised not to hurt the Gibeonites. But Saul was very eager to help the people of Israel and Judah. So he tried to kill all the Gibeonites.)
King David called the Gibeonites together and talked to them. 3 He asked them, “What can I do for you? What can I do to take away Israel’s sin so you can bless the Lord’s people?”
4 The Gibeonites said to David, “Saul and his family don’t have enough silver and gold to pay for what they did! And we don’t have the right to kill anyone in Israel.”
Then David asked, “What do you want me to do for you?”
5 The Gibeonites said to him, “Saul made plans against us. He tried to destroy all our people who are left in the land of Israel. 6 Saul was the Lord’s chosen king. So bring seven of his sons to us. Then we will kill them and hang them on stakes. We will put them in front of the Lord at Gibeah, Saul’s hometown.”
The king said, “I will give them to you.” 7 But the king protected Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth. (Jonathan was Saul’s son.) David did this because of the promise he had made to Jonathan in the Lord’s name. So the king did not let them hurt Mephibosheth. 8 But the king did take Armoni and Mephibosheth,[a] sons of Rizpah and Saul. (Rizpah was the daughter of Aiah.) And the king took the five sons of Saul’s daughter Merab. Adriel was the father of Merab’s five sons. (Adriel was the son of Barzillai the Meholathite.) 9 David gave these seven sons to the Gibeonites. Then the Gibeonites killed them and hung them on stakes on a hill before the Lord. All seven sons died together. They were put to death during the first days of the harvest season. (The barley harvest was just beginning.)
10 Aiah’s daughter Rizpah took the rough cloth that was worn to show sadness. Then she put it on a rock for herself. She stayed there from the beginning of the harvest until the rain fell on her sons’ bodies. During the day she did not let the birds of the sky touch her sons’ bodies. At night she did not let the wild animals touch them.
11 People told David what Aiah’s daughter Rizpah, Saul’s slave woman, was doing. 12 Then David took the bones of Saul and Jonathan from the men of Jabesh Gilead. (They had taken these bones secretly from the public square of Beth Shan. The Philistines had hung the bodies of Saul and Jonathan there after they had killed Saul at Gilboa.) 13 David brought the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan from Gilead. Then the people gathered the bodies of Saul’s seven sons who were hanged on stakes. 14 The people buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan at Zela in Benjamin. They buried them in the tomb of Saul’s father Kish. The people did everything the king commanded.
Then God answered the prayers of the people in the land.
Wars with the Philistines
15 Again there was war between the Philistines and Israel. David and his men went out to fight the Philistines. But David became tired and weak. 16 Ishbi-Benob was one of the sons of Rapha. His bronze spearhead weighed about seven and a half pounds. Ishbi-Benob had a new sword, and he planned to kill David. 17 But Abishai son of Zeruiah killed the Philistine. So he saved David’s life.
Then David’s men made a promise to David. They said, “Never again will you go out with us to battle. If you were killed, Israel would lose its greatest leader.”
18 Later, at Gob, there was another battle with the Philistines. Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph, another one of the sons of Rapha.
19 Later, there was another battle at Gob with the Philistines. Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim from Bethlehem killed Goliath[b] from Gath. Goliath’s spear was as large as a weaver’s rod.
20 At Gath another battle took place. A very large man was there. He had 6 fingers on each hand. And he had 6 toes on each foot. He had 24 fingers and toes in all. This man also was one of the sons of Rapha. 21 When he challenged Israel, Jonathan killed him. Jonathan was the son of Shimeah, David’s brother.
22 These four men were sons of Rapha from Gath. They all were killed by David and his men.

The Gibeonites Avenged
21 During the reign of David, there was a famine(A) for three successive years; so David sought(B) the face of the Lord. The Lord said, “It is on account of Saul and his blood-stained house; it is because he put the Gibeonites to death.”
2 The king summoned the Gibeonites(C) and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not a part of Israel but were survivors of the Amorites; the Israelites had sworn to spare them, but Saul in his zeal for Israel and Judah had tried to annihilate them.) 3 David asked the Gibeonites, “What shall I do for you? How shall I make atonement so that you will bless the Lord’s inheritance?”(D)
4 The Gibeonites answered him, “We have no right to demand silver or gold from Saul or his family, nor do we have the right to put anyone in Israel to death.”(E)
“What do you want me to do for you?” David asked.
5 They answered the king, “As for the man who destroyed us and plotted against us so that we have been decimated and have no place anywhere in Israel, 6 let seven of his male descendants be given to us to be killed and their bodies exposed(F) before the Lord at Gibeah of Saul—the Lord’s chosen(G) one.”
So the king said, “I will give them to you.”
7 The king spared Mephibosheth(H) son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the oath(I) before the Lord between David and Jonathan son of Saul. 8 But the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons of Aiah’s daughter Rizpah,(J) whom she had borne to Saul, together with the five sons of Saul’s daughter Merab,[a] whom she had borne to Adriel son of Barzillai the Meholathite.(K) 9 He handed them over to the Gibeonites, who killed them and exposed their bodies on a hill before the Lord. All seven of them fell together; they were put to death(L) during the first days of the harvest, just as the barley harvest was beginning.(M)
10 Rizpah daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it out for herself on a rock. From the beginning of the harvest till the rain poured down from the heavens on the bodies, she did not let the birds touch them by day or the wild animals by night.(N) 11 When David was told what Aiah’s daughter Rizpah, Saul’s concubine, had done, 12 he went and took the bones of Saul(O) and his son Jonathan from the citizens of Jabesh Gilead.(P) (They had stolen their bodies from the public square at Beth Shan,(Q) where the Philistines had hung(R) them after they struck Saul down on Gilboa.)(S) 13 David brought the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan from there, and the bones of those who had been killed and exposed were gathered up.
14 They buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan in the tomb of Saul’s father Kish, at Zela(T) in Benjamin, and did everything the king commanded. After that,(U) God answered prayer(V) in behalf of the land.(W)
Wars Against the Philistines(X)
15 Once again there was a battle between the Philistines(Y) and Israel. David went down with his men to fight against the Philistines, and he became exhausted. 16 And Ishbi-Benob, one of the descendants of Rapha, whose bronze spearhead weighed three hundred shekels[b] and who was armed with a new sword, said he would kill David. 17 But Abishai(Z) son of Zeruiah came to David’s rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him, saying, “Never again will you go out with us to battle, so that the lamp(AA) of Israel will not be extinguished.(AB)”
18 In the course of time, there was another battle with the Philistines, at Gob. At that time Sibbekai(AC) the Hushathite killed Saph, one of the descendants of Rapha.
19 In another battle with the Philistines at Gob, Elhanan son of Jair[c] the Bethlehemite killed the brother of[d] Goliath the Gittite,(AD) who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver’s rod.(AE)
20 In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He also was descended from Rapha. 21 When he taunted(AF) Israel, Jonathan son of Shimeah,(AG) David’s brother, killed him.
22 These four were descendants of Rapha in Gath, and they fell at the hands of David and his men.

David Avenges the Gibeonites
21 Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David (A)inquired of the Lord. And the Lord answered, “It is because of Saul and his [a]bloodthirsty house, because he killed the Gibeonites.” 2 So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but (B)of the remnant of the Amorites; the children of Israel had sworn protection to them, but Saul had sought to kill them (C)in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah.
3 Therefore David said to the Gibeonites, “What shall I do for you? And with what shall I make atonement, that you may bless (D)the inheritance of the Lord?”
4 And the Gibeonites said to him, “We will have no silver or gold from Saul or from his house, nor shall you kill any man in Israel for us.”
So he said, “Whatever you say, I will do for you.”
5 Then they answered the king, “As for the man who consumed us and plotted against us, that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the territories of Israel, 6 let seven men of his descendants be delivered (E)to us, and we will hang them before the Lord (F)in Gibeah of Saul, (G)whom the Lord chose.”
And the king said, “I will give them.”
7 But the king spared (H)Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of (I)the Lord’s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul. 8 So the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons of (J)Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bore to Saul, and the five sons of [b]Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she [c]brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite; 9 and he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them on the hill (K)before the Lord. So they fell, all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.
10 Now (L)Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it for herself on the rock, (M)from the beginning of harvest until the late rains poured on them from heaven. And she did not allow the birds of the air to rest on them by day nor the beasts of the field by night.
11 And David was told what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done. 12 Then David went and took the bones of Saul, and the bones of Jonathan his son, from the men of (N)Jabesh Gilead who had stolen them from the street of [d]Beth Shan, where the (O)Philistines had hung them up, after the Philistines had struck down Saul in Gilboa. 13 So he brought up the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from there; and they gathered the bones of those who had been hanged. 14 They buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the country of Benjamin in (P)Zelah, in the tomb of Kish his father. So they performed all that the king commanded. And after that (Q)God heeded the prayer for the land.
Philistine Giants Destroyed(R)
15 When the Philistines were at war again with Israel, David and his servants with him went down and fought against the Philistines; and David grew faint. 16 Then Ishbi-Benob, who was one of the sons of [e]the (S)giant, the weight of whose bronze spear was three hundred shekels, who was bearing a new sword, thought he could kill David. 17 But (T)Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid, and struck the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, (U)“You shall go out no more with us to battle, lest you quench the (V)lamp of Israel.”
18 (W)Now it happened afterward that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob. Then (X)Sibbechai the Hushathite killed [f]Saph, who was one of the sons of [g]the giant. 19 Again there was war at Gob with the Philistines, where (Y)Elhanan the son of [h]Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed (Z)the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.
20 Yet again (AA)there was war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number; and he also was born to [i]the giant. 21 So when he (AB)defied Israel, Jonathan the son of [j]Shimea, David’s brother, killed him.
22 (AC)These four were born to [k]the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

I Gabaoniti vendicati
21 (A)Al tempo di Davide ci fu una carestia per tre anni continui. Davide cercò il volto del Signore, e il Signore gli disse: «C’è un debito di sangue che pende su Saul e sulla sua casa, perché egli fece perire i Gabaoniti». 2 Allora il re chiamò i Gabaoniti e parlò loro. I Gabaoniti non facevano parte dei figli d’Israele, ma erano un residuo degli Amorei; i figli d’Israele si erano legati a loro per giuramento; tuttavia Saul, nel suo zelo per i figli d’Israele e di Giuda, aveva cercato di sterminarli. 3 Davide disse ai Gabaoniti: «Che cosa devo fare per voi e in che modo posso espiare il torto fattovi, perché voi benediciate l’eredità del Signore?» 4 I Gabaoniti gli risposero: «Tra noi e Saul e la sua casa non è questione d’argento o d’oro; e non spetta a noi far morire gente d’Israele». Il re disse: «Che cosa volete dunque che io faccia per voi?» 5 Essi risposero al re: «Poiché quell’uomo ci ha consumati e aveva programmato di sterminarci per farci sparire da tutto il territorio d’Israele, 6 consegnateci sette uomini tra i suoi figli e noi li impiccheremo davanti al Signore a Ghibea di Saul, l’eletto del Signore». Il re disse: «Ve li consegnerò».
7 Il re risparmiò Mefiboset, figlio di Gionatan, figlio di Saul, a causa del giuramento che Davide e Gionatan, figlio di Saul, avevano fatto tra di loro davanti al Signore; 8 ma il re prese i due figli che Rispa, figlia di Aia, aveva partoriti a Saul, Armoni e Mefiboset, e i cinque figli che Merab[a], figlia di Saul, aveva partoriti ad Adriel di Meola, figlio di Barzillai, 9 e li consegnò ai Gabaoniti, che li impiccarono sul monte, davanti al Signore. Tutti e sette perirono assieme; furono messi a morte nei primi giorni della mietitura, quando si iniziava a mietere l’orzo.
10 Rispa, figlia di Aia, prese un cilicio, lo stese sulla roccia e stette là dal principio della mietitura fino a che l’acqua non cadde dal cielo sui cadaveri; lei impedì agli uccelli del cielo di posarsi su di essi di giorno e alle bestie selvatiche di avvicinarsi di notte. 11 Fu riferito a Davide quello che Rispa, figlia di Aia, concubina di Saul, aveva fatto. 12 Davide andò a prendere le ossa di Saul e quelle di Gionatan suo figlio presso gli abitanti di Iabes di Galaad, i quali le avevano portate via dalla piazza di Bet-San, dove i Filistei avevano appeso i cadaveri quando avevano sconfitto Saul sul Ghilboa. 13 Egli riportò di là le ossa di Saul e quelle di Gionatan suo figlio; e anche le ossa di quelli che erano stati impiccati furono raccolte. 14 Le ossa di Saul e di Gionatan suo figlio furono sepolte nel paese di Beniamino, a Sela, nella tomba di Chis, padre di Saul; fu fatto tutto quello che il re aveva ordinato. Dopo questo, Dio fu placato verso il paese.
Ultime imprese contro i Filistei
15 (B)Ci fu di nuovo guerra tra i Filistei e gli Israeliti. E Davide scese con la sua gente a combattere contro i Filistei. Davide era stanco 16 e Isbi-Benob, uno dei discendenti di Rafa[b], che aveva una lancia di bronzo del peso di trecento sicli[c] e portava un’armatura nuova, manifestò il proposito di uccidere Davide; 17 ma Abisai, figlio di Seruia, venne in soccorso al re, colpì il Filisteo e lo uccise. Allora la gente di Davide gli fece questo giuramento: «Tu non uscirai più con noi a combattere ed eviterai che si spenga la lampada d’Israele».
18 Dopo questo ci fu un’altra battaglia con i Filistei, a Gob; allora Sibecai il Cusatita uccise Saf, uno dei discendenti di Rafa.
19 Ci fu di nuovo battaglia con i Filistei a Gob; ed Elcanan, figlio di Iaare-Oreghim di Betlemme, uccise Goliat di Gat, che aveva una lancia robusta come un subbio da tessitore.
20 Ci fu un’altra battaglia a Gat, dove si trovò un uomo di grande statura, che aveva sei dita in ciascuna mano e in ciascun piede, in tutto ventiquattro dita, e che era egli pure dei discendenti di Rafa. 21 Egli insultò Israele, e Gionatan, figlio di Simea, fratello di Davide, l’uccise.
22 Questi quattro uomini erano nati a Gat, della stirpe di Rafa. Essi perirono per mano di Davide e per mano della sua gente.
