The Rebellion of Sheba
20 And there happened to be there a [a]rebel, whose name was Sheba the son of Bichri, a Benjamite. And he blew a trumpet, and said:
(A)“We have no share in David,
Nor do we have inheritance in the son of Jesse;
(B)Every man to his tents, O Israel!”
2 So every man of Israel deserted David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the (C)men of Judah, from the Jordan as far as Jerusalem, remained loyal to their king.
3 Now David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took the ten women, (D)his concubines whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in seclusion and supported them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up to the day of their death, living in widowhood.
4 And the king said to Amasa, (E)“Assemble the men of Judah for me within three days, and be present here yourself.” 5 So Amasa went to assemble the men of Judah. But he delayed longer than the set time which David had appointed him. 6 And David said to (F)Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom. Take (G)your lord’s servants and pursue him, lest he find for himself fortified cities, and escape us.” 7 So Joab’s men, with the (H)Cherethites, the Pelethites, and (I)all the mighty men, went out after him. And they went out of Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri. 8 When they were at the large stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came before them. Now Joab was dressed in battle armor; on it was a belt with a sword fastened in its sheath at his hips; and as he was going forward, it fell out. 9 Then Joab said to Amasa, “Are you in health, my brother?” (J)And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. 10 But Amasa did not notice the sword that was in Joab’s hand. And (K)he struck him with it (L)in the stomach, and his entrails poured out on the ground; and he did not strike him again. Thus he died.
Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri. 11 Meanwhile one of Joab’s men stood near Amasa, and said, “Whoever favors Joab and whoever is for David—follow Joab!” 12 But Amasa wallowed in his blood in the middle of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he moved Amasa from the highway to the field and threw a garment over him, when he saw that everyone who came upon him halted. 13 When he was removed from the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
14 And he went through all the tribes of Israel to (M)Abel and Beth Maachah and all the Berites. So they were gathered together and also went after [b]Sheba. 15 Then they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth Maachah; and they (N)cast up a siege mound against the city, and it stood by the rampart. And all the people who were with Joab battered the wall to throw it down.
16 Then a wise woman cried out from the city, “Hear, hear! Please say to Joab, ‘Come nearby, that I may speak with you.’ ” 17 When he had come near to her, the woman said, “Are you Joab?”
He answered, “I am.”
Then she said to him, “Hear the words of your maidservant.”
And he answered, “I am listening.”
18 So she spoke, saying, “They used to talk in former times, saying, ‘They shall surely seek guidance at Abel,’ and so they would end disputes. 19 I am among the peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up (O)the inheritance of the Lord?”
20 And Joab answered and said, “Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy! 21 That is not so. But a man from the mountains of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has raised his hand against the king, against David. Deliver him only, and I will depart from the city.”
So the woman said to Joab, “Watch, his head will be thrown to you over the wall.” 22 Then the woman (P)in her wisdom went to all the people. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. Then he blew a trumpet, and they withdrew from the city, every man to his tent. So Joab returned to the king at Jerusalem.

23 And (Q)Joab was over all the army of Israel; Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; 24 Adoram was (R)in charge of revenue; (S)Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; 25 Sheva was scribe; (T)Zadok and Abiathar were the priests; 26 (U)and Ira the Jairite was [c]a chief minister under David.

Rebelión de Sebá
20 Se encontraba en Guilgal un indeseable llamado Sebá, hijo de Bicrí, de la tribu de Benjamín. Hizo sonar el cuerno y gritó:
— ¡No tenemos nada que ver con David, ni repartimos herencia con el hijo de Jesé! ¡Israel, a tus tiendas!
2 Todos los israelitas abandonaron a David y siguieron a Sebá. Los judaítas, en cambio, acompañaron fielmente a su rey desde el Jordán hasta Jerusalén.
3 Cuando David llegó a su palacio en Jerusalén, encerró en el harén a las diez concubinas que había dejado al cuidado del palacio. Las siguió manteniendo, pero no volvió a acostarse con ellas y estuvieron encerradas hasta el día de su muerte, como viudas de por vida.
4 Luego el rey dijo a Amasá:
— Convoca a la gente de Judá en el plazo de tres días y luego te presentas aquí.
5 Amasá fue a convocar a Judá, pero tardó más tiempo del previsto. 6 Entonces David dijo a Abisay:
— Ahora Sebá, el hijo de Bicrí, nos puede hacer más daño que Absalón. Sal con los hombres de tu señor a perseguirlo, antes de que llegue a las ciudades fortificadas y se nos escape.
7 Abisay partió de Jerusalén al frente de los hombres de Joab, los quereteos, los peleteos y todos los valientes y salieron en persecución de Sebá, el hijo de Bicrí. 8 Cuando estaban junto a la piedra grande que hay en Gabaón, se encontraron con Amasá. Joab llevaba sobre su vestimenta un cinturón con una espada envainada, atada al muslo. La espada se le salió y cayó. 9 Joab saludó a Amasá:
— ¿Estás bien, hermano?
Luego lo agarró de la barba con su mano derecha para besarlo. 10 Pero Amasá no reparó en la espada que Joab llevaba en la otra mano y este se la clavó en la barriga; se le salieron los intestinos a Amasá y así, de un sólo golpe, murió. Luego Joab y su hermano Abisay reanudaron la persecución de Sebá, el hijo de Bicrí.
11 Uno de los soldados de Joab se quedó junto a Amasá y gritó:
— ¡El que esté con Joab y David, que siga a Joab!
12 Amasá yacía en medio del camino, bañado en su propia sangre y, cuando el soldado aquel vio que la gente se detenía, retiró el cadáver fuera del camino y lo cubrió con un manto, pues había visto que todos los que llegaban junto a él se detenían. 13 Y cuando Amasá hubo sido retirado del camino, todo el mundo siguió a Joab en persecución de Sebá, el hijo de Bicrí.
14 Sebá recorrió todas las tribus de Israel y llegó hasta Abel Bet Maacá, donde se congregaron todos los beritas entrando tras él. 15 Llegaron también los de Joab y sitiaron a Sebá en Abel Bet Maacá; construyeron una rampa de asedio contra la ciudad, la colocaron sobre la muralla y toda la gente de Joab se puso a golpear la muralla para derribarla. 16 Entonces una mujer sensata se puso a gritar desde la ciudad:
— ¡Escuchad, escuchad! Decidle a Joab que se acerque aquí, que quiero hablarle.
17 Él se acercó y la mujer le preguntó:
— ¿Eres tú Joab?
Él respondió:
— Sí, yo soy.
La mujer le dijo:
— Por favor, escucha las palabras de tu sierva.
Joab le dijo:
— Te escucho.
18 Entonces ella dijo:
— Antiguamente se solía decir: “Que pregunten en Abel, y caso resuelto”. 19 Somos israelitas pacíficos y fieles ¡y tú pretendes destruir una ciudad importante de Israel! ¿Por qué quieres arruinar el patrimonio del Señor?
20 Joab contestó:
— ¡Líbreme Dios! ¡Líbreme Dios de arruinar y destruir! 21 No es ese el caso. Se trata de un hombre de la montaña de Efraín, llamado Sebá, hijo de Bicrí, que se ha rebelado contra el rey David. Entregádnoslo a él solo y abandonaré la ciudad.
La mujer respondió a Joab:
— Te echaremos su cabeza desde la muralla.
22 La mujer convenció a toda la gente con su sensatez: cortaron la cabeza a Sebá, el hijo de Bicrí, y se la arrojaron a Joab. Luego Joab hizo sonar el cuerno, levantaron el asedio de la ciudad y cada cual marchó a su tienda. Joab por su parte regresó a Jerusalén, junto al rey.

23 Joab era el jefe de todo el ejército de Israel; Benaías, hijo de Joyadá, estaba al mando de los quereteos y peleteos; 24 Adorán era inspector de trabajos forzados; Josafat, hijo de Ajilud, era el heraldo; 25 Seraías era secretario; y Sadoc y Abiatar, sacerdotes. 26 Irá, de Jaír, también era sacerdote de David.
