2 David s-a dus acolo împreună cu soţiile sale, izreelita Ahinoam şi Abigail, văduva carmelitului Nabal. 3 David i-a luat cu el şi pe oamenii săi, pe fiecare cu familia lui, iar aceştia au locuit în împrejurimile Hebronului. 4 Bărbaţii din Iuda au venit şi l-au uns acolo pe David ca rege peste Casa lui Iuda. Casa lui Iuda l-a urmat însă pe David. 11 Perioada cât a domnit David la Hebron, peste Casa lui Iuda, a fost de şapte ani şi şase luni. 12 Abner, fiul lui Ner, împreună cu slujitorii lui Iş-Boşet, a ieşit din Mahanayim şi a plecat la Ghivon. 13 Atunci Ioab, fiul Ţeruiei, împreună cu slujitorii lui David au ieşit şi ei şi i-au întâlnit la iazul din Ghivon. Un grup stătea de-o parte a iazului şi un grup stătea de cealaltă parte. 14 Abner i-a zis lui Ioab:
– Să se lupte tinerii între ei, înaintea noastră!
– Bine! a răspuns Ioab.
15 Tinerii s-au înfăţişat în număr egal: doisprezece pentru Beniamin şi pentru Iş-Boşet şi doisprezece dintre slujitorii lui David. 16 Fiecare, apucându-şi adversarul de cap, i-a înfipt sabia în coastă şi au murit toţi deodată. De aceea locul acela, care se află în Ghivon, s-a numit de atunci Helkat-Haţurim[c]. 17 Lupta a fost foarte aprigă în acea zi, iar Abner şi bărbaţii lui Israel au fost bătuţi de către slujitorii lui David. 18 Se aflau acolo şi cei trei fii ai Ţeruiei: Ioab, Abişai şi Asael. Asael alerga la fel de repede ca o gazelă sălbatică. 19 A pornit în urmărirea lui Abner, fără a se abate la dreapta sau la stânga de la urmărirea acestuia. 20 Abner s-a uitat în urmă şi a întrebat:
– Tu eşti, Asael?
– Eu sunt, i-a răspuns Asael.
21 Atunci Abner i-a zis:
– Abate-te la dreapta sau la stânga, prinde pe unul dintre tineri şi ia-i armura!
Asael însă nu s-a abătut de la a-l urmări. 22 Abner i-a zis din nou lui Asael:
– Nu mă mai urmări! De ce să te ucid? Cum îl voi mai putea privi în faţă pe fratele tău Ioab?
23 Dar Asael a refuzat să se oprească din urmărire. Atunci Abner l-a lovit în stomac cu capătul suliţei care i-a ieşit prin spate. Asael a murit pe loc şi toţi cei care ajungeau la locul în care acesta a murit se opreau.
24 Ioab şi Abişai au continuat să-l urmărească pe Abner. Pe înserate au ajuns la dealul Ama, care se află la răsărit de Ghiah, pe drumul care duce spre pustia Ghivon. 25 În acelaşi timp, beniamiţii s-au adunat în jurul lui Abner, au format o ceată şi s-au aşezat pe vârful unui alt deal. 26 Abner l-a strigat pe Ioab şi i-a zis:
– Trebuie ca sabia să nimicească la nesfârşit? Nu-ţi dai seama că se va sfârşi cu amărăciune? Cât timp va mai trece până când vei porunci oamenilor tăi să nu-şi mai urmărească fraţii?
27 Ioab i-a răspuns:
– Viu este Dumnezeu că, dacă nu ai fi vorbit, oamenii mei ar fi continuat urmărirea fraţilor lor până dimineaţă.
28 Apoi Ioab a sunat din corn şi toţi oamenii săi s-au oprit; nu i-au mai urmărit pe israeliţi şi nici nu s-au mai luptat cu ei. 29 Atunci Abner, împreună cu oamenii săi, au mărşăluit toată noaptea aceea prin Araba[d]. Au trecut Iordanul, au străbătut tot Bitronul[e] şi au ajuns la Mahanayim. 30 În acelaşi timp, Ioab s-a întors de la urmărirea lui Abner şi şi-a adunat toţi oamenii. Dintre slujitorii lui David, în afară de Asael, au murit doar nouăsprezece bărbaţi. 31 Slujitorii lui David însă au ucis dintre beniamiţii care erau cu Abner trei sute şaizeci de bărbaţi. 32 Apoi au luat trupul lui Asael şi l-au îngropat în mormântul familiei sale din Betleem. Ioab şi oamenii săi au mărşăluit toată noaptea, ajungând la Hebron în zori.

David Anointed King of Judah
2 It happened after this that David (A)inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up to any of the cities of Judah?”
And the Lord said to him, “Go up.”
David said, “Where shall I go up?”
And He said, “To (B)Hebron.”
2 So David went up there, and his (C)two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite. 3 And David brought up (D)the men who were with him, every man with his household. So they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.
4 (E)Then the men of Judah came, and there they (F)anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, (G)“The men of Jabesh Gilead were the ones who buried Saul.” 5 So David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, (H)“You are blessed of the Lord, for you have shown this kindness to your lord, to Saul, and have buried him. 6 And now may (I)the Lord show kindness and truth to you. I also will repay you this kindness, because you have done this thing. 7 Now therefore, let your hands be strengthened, and be valiant; for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”
Ishbosheth Made King of Israel
8 But (J)Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, took [a]Ishbosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to (K)Mahanaim; 9 and he made him king over (L)Gilead, over the (M)Ashurites, over (N)Jezreel, over Ephraim, over Benjamin, and over all Israel. 10 Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. Only the house of Judah followed David. 11 And (O)the [b]time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
Israel and Judah at War
12 Now Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to (P)Gibeon. 13 And (Q)Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out and met them by (R)the pool of Gibeon. So they sat down, one on one side of the pool and the other on the other side of the pool. 14 Then Abner said to Joab, “Let the young men now arise and compete before us.”
And Joab said, “Let them arise.”
15 So they arose and went over by number, twelve from Benjamin, followers of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve from the servants of David. 16 And each one grasped his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his opponent’s side; so they fell down together. Therefore that place was called [c]the Field of Sharp Swords, which is in Gibeon. 17 So there was a very fierce battle that day, and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten before the servants of David.
18 Now the (S)three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab and Abishai and Asahel. And Asahel was (T)as fleet of foot (U)as a wild gazelle. 19 So Asahel pursued Abner, and in going he did not turn to the right hand or to the left from following Abner.
20 Then Abner looked behind him and said, “Are you Asahel?”
He answered, “I am.”
21 And Abner said to him, “Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and lay hold on one of the young men and take his armor for yourself.” But Asahel would not turn aside from following him. 22 So Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn aside from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I face your brother Joab?” 23 However, he refused to turn aside. Therefore Abner struck him (V)in the stomach with the blunt end of the spear, so that the spear came out of his back; and he fell down there and died on the spot. So it was that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died, stood (W)still.
24 Joab and Abishai also pursued Abner. And the sun was going down when they came to the hill of Ammah, which is before Giah by the road to the Wilderness of Gibeon. 25 Now the children of Benjamin gathered together behind Abner and became [d]a unit, and took their stand on top of a hill. 26 Then Abner called to Joab and said, “Shall the sword devour forever? Do you not know that it will be bitter in the latter end? How long will it be then until you tell the people to return from pursuing their brethren?”
27 And Joab said, “As God lives, [e]unless (X)you had spoken, surely then by morning all the people would have given up pursuing their brethren.” 28 So Joab blew a trumpet; and all the people stood still and did not pursue Israel anymore, nor did they fight anymore. 29 Then Abner and his men went on all that night through the plain, crossed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron; and they came to Mahanaim.
30 So Joab returned from pursuing Abner. And when he had gathered all the people together, there were missing of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel. 31 But the servants of David had struck down, of Benjamin and Abner’s men, three hundred and sixty men who died. 32 Then they took up Asahel and buried him in his father’s tomb, which was in (Y)Bethlehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at daybreak.

2 Después de esto aconteció que David consultó a Jehová, diciendo: ¿Subiré a alguna de las ciudades de Judá? Y Jehová le respondió: Sube. David volvió a decir: ¿Adónde subiré? Y él le dijo: A Hebrón.
2 David subió allá, y con él sus dos mujeres, Ahinoam jizreelita y Abigail, la que fue mujer de Nabal el de Carmel.
3 Llevó también David consigo a los hombres que con él habían estado, cada uno con su familia; los cuales moraron en las ciudades de Hebrón.
4 Y vinieron los varones de Judá y ungieron allí a David por rey sobre la casa de Judá. Y dieron aviso a David, diciendo: Los de Jabés de Galaad son los que sepultaron a Saúl.
5 Entonces envió David mensajeros a los de Jabés de Galaad, diciéndoles: Benditos seáis vosotros de Jehová, que habéis hecho esta misericordia con vuestro señor, con Saúl, dándole sepultura.
6 Ahora, pues, Jehová haga con vosotros misericordia y verdad; y yo también os haré bien por esto que habéis hecho.
7 Esfuércense, pues, ahora vuestras manos, y sed valientes; pues muerto Saúl vuestro señor, los de la casa de Judá me han ungido por rey sobre ellos.
Guerra entre David y la casa de Saúl
8 Pero Abner hijo de Ner, general del ejército de Saúl, tomó a Is-boset hijo de Saúl, y lo llevó a Mahanáyim,
9 y lo hizo rey sobre Galaad, sobre Asurí, sobre Jizreel, sobre Efraín, sobre Benjamín y sobre todo Israel.
10 De cuarenta años era Is-boset hijo de Saúl cuando comenzó a reinar sobre Israel, y reinó dos años. Solamente los de la casa de Judá siguieron a David.
11 Y fue el número de los días que David reinó en Hebrón sobre la casa de Judá, siete años y seis meses.

14 Y dijo Abner a Joab: Levántense ahora los jóvenes, y maniobren delante de nosotros. Y Joab respondió: Levántense.
15 Entonces se levantaron, y pasaron en número igual, doce de Benjamín por parte de Is-boset hijo de Saúl, y doce de los siervos de David.
16 Y cada uno echó mano de la cabeza de su adversario, y metió su espada en el costado de su adversario, y cayeron a una; por lo que fue llamado aquel lugar, Helcat-hazurim, el cual está en Gabaón.
17 La batalla fue muy reñida aquel día, y Abner y los hombres de Israel fueron vencidos por los siervos de David.
18 Estaban allí los tres hijos de Sarvia: Joab, Abisay y Asael. Este Asael era ligero de pies como una gacela del campo.
19 Y siguió Asael tras de Abner, sin apartarse ni a derecha ni a izquierda.
20 Y miró atrás Abner, y dijo: ¿No eres tú Asael? Y él respondió: Sí.
21 Entonces Abner le dijo: Apártate a la derecha o a la izquierda, y echa mano de alguno de los hombres, y toma para ti sus despojos. Pero Asael no quiso apartarse de en pos de él.
22 Y Abner volvió a decir a Asael: Apártate de en pos de mí; ¿por qué he de herirte hasta derribarte? ¿Cómo levantaría yo entonces mi rostro delante de Joab tu hermano?
23 Y no queriendo él irse, lo hirió Abner con el regatón de la lanza por la quinta costilla, y le salió la lanza por la espalda, y cayó allí, y murió en aquel mismo sitio. Y todos los que venían por aquel lugar donde Asael había caído y estaba muerto, se detenían.
24 Mas Joab y Abisay siguieron a Abner; y se puso el sol cuando llegaron al collado de Ammá, que está delante de Gía, junto al camino del desierto de Gabaón.
25 Y se juntaron los hijos de Benjamín en pos de Abner, formando un solo ejército; e hicieron alto en la cumbre del collado.
26 Y Abner dio voces a Joab, diciendo: ¿Consumirá la espada perpetuamente? ¿No sabes tú que el final será amargura? ¿Hasta cuándo no dirás al pueblo que se vuelva de perseguir a sus hermanos?
27 Y Joab respondió: Vive Dios, que si no hubieses hablado, el pueblo hubiera dejado de seguir a sus hermanos desde esta mañana.
28 Entonces Joab tocó el cuerno, y todo el pueblo se detuvo, y no persiguió más a los de Israel, ni peleó más.
29 Y Abner y los suyos caminaron por el Arabá toda aquella noche, y pasando el Jordán cruzaron por todo Bitrón y llegaron a Mahanáyim.
30 Joab también volvió de perseguir a Abner, y juntando a todo el pueblo, faltaron de los siervos de David diecinueve hombres y Asael.
31 Mas los siervos de David hirieron de los de Benjamín y de los de Abner, a trescientos sesenta hombres, los cuales murieron.
32 Tomaron luego a Asael, y lo sepultaron en el sepulcro de su padre en Belén. Y caminaron toda aquella noche Joab y sus hombres, y les amaneció en Hebrón.
