David proclamado rey de Judá
2 Después de esto David consultó al Señor(A): «¿Subiré a alguna de las ciudades de Judá?». Y el Señor le dijo: «Sube». «¿Adónde subiré?», dijo David. Y Él dijo: «A Hebrón(B)». 2 Entonces David subió allá, y también sus dos mujeres, Ahinoam la jezreelita y Abigail(C), viuda[a] de Nabal, el de Carmel. 3 Y David trajo a los hombres que estaban con él, cada uno con su familia(D); y habitaron en las ciudades de Hebrón. 4 Los hombres de Judá vinieron y ungieron allí a David como rey sobre la casa de Judá(E).
Y avisaron a David: «Fueron los hombres de Jabes de Galaad los que sepultaron a Saúl(F)». 5 Y David envió mensajeros a los hombres de Jabes de Galaad, a decirles: «Benditos sean del Señor, porque han mostrado[b] esta bondad a Saúl su señor(G), y lo han sepultado. 6 Ahora, que el Señor les muestre[c] misericordia y verdad(H); y yo también les haré bien por esto que han hecho. 7 Fortalezcan, pues, sus manos, y sean valientes[d] porque Saúl su señor ha muerto, y[e] la casa de Judá me ha ungido rey sobre ellos».
Isboset proclamado rey de Israel
8 Pero Abner, hijo de Ner(I), comandante del ejército de Saúl, había tomado a Isboset[f], hijo de Saúl, y lo llevó a Mahanaim(J). 9 Y le hizo rey sobre Galaad(K), sobre Gesuri[g](L), sobre Jezreel(M), sobre Efraín, sobre Benjamín y sobre todo Israel. 10 Isboset, hijo de Saúl, tenía cuarenta años cuando comenzó a reinar sobre Israel, y reinó dos años. La casa de Judá, sin embargo, siguió a David. 11 El tiempo[h] que David reinó en Hebrón sobre la casa de Judá fue de siete años y seis meses(N).
12 Abner, hijo de Ner, salió de Mahanaim a Gabaón(O) con los siervos de Isboset, hijo de Saúl. 13 Y Joab, hijo de Sarvia(P), y los siervos de David salieron y los encontraron[i] junto al estanque de Gabaón; y se sentaron, unos a un[j] lado del estanque y los otros al otro lado[k]. 14 Entonces Abner(Q) dijo a Joab: «Que se levanten ahora los jóvenes y compitan[l] delante de nosotros». «Que se levanten», respondió Joab. 15 Se levantaron y pasaron en igual número, doce por Benjamín e Isboset, hijo de Saúl, y doce de los siervos de David. 16 Cada uno agarró a su adversario[m] por la cabeza, y metió su espada en el costado del adversario[n] de manera que cayeron juntos. Por eso aquel lugar fue llamado Helcat Hazurim[o], el cual está en Gabaón. 17 Aquel día la batalla fue muy reñida, y Abner y los hombres de Israel fueron derrotados delante de los siervos de David(R).
18 Estaban allí los tres hijos de Sarvia: Joab, Abisai y Asael(S). Y Asael era tan ligero de pies como una gacela del campo(T). 19 Asael persiguió a Abner, y no se desvió[p] ni a derecha ni a izquierda de ir tras Abner. 20 Entonces Abner, miró atrás y dijo: «¿Eres tú Asael?». «Yo soy», respondió él. 21 Abner le dijo: «Desvíate a tu derecha o a tu izquierda, apodérate de uno de los jóvenes y toma para ti sus despojos». Pero Asael no quería dejar de perseguirlo. 22 Abner volvió a decirle a Asael: «Deja de perseguirme. ¿Por qué he de derribarte en tierra? ¿Cómo podría entonces levantar mi rostro ante tu hermano Joab(U)?». 23 Pero él rehusó apartarse; por tanto, Abner lo hirió en el estómago con la parte trasera de la lanza, y la lanza le salió por la espalda; allí cayó, y allí mismo murió. Y todos los que venían al lugar donde Asael había caído y muerto, se detenían(V).
24 Pero Joab y Abisai persiguieron a Abner, y cuando el sol se ponía, llegaron a la colina de Amma, que está frente a Gía junto al camino del desierto de Gabaón. 25 Los benjamitas se agruparon detrás de Abner formando una sola banda, y se detuvieron en la cumbre de una colina. 26 Abner llamó a Joab, y dijo: «¿Devorará la espada para siempre? ¿No sabes que el final será amargo? ¿Hasta cuándo esperarás para decirles[q] que dejen de perseguir a sus hermanos?». 27 Respondió Joab: «Vive Dios, que si no hubieras hablado, ciertamente el pueblo, después de perseguir cada cual a su hermano, no se hubiera ido hasta la mañana». 28 Entonces Joab tocó la trompeta y todo el pueblo se detuvo; no persiguieron más a Israel ni continuaron peleando más(W). 29 Abner y sus hombres marcharon toda aquella noche por el Arabá, cruzaron el Jordán, y caminando toda la mañana[r], llegaron a Mahanaim(X).
30 Joab volvió también de perseguir a Abner, y cuando reunió a todo el pueblo, faltaban de los siervos de David, diecinueve hombres, además de Asael. 31 Pero los siervos de David habían herido de Benjamín y de los hombres de Abner, a 360 hombres, los cuales murieron. 32 Se llevaron a Asael y lo sepultaron en el sepulcro de su padre, que estaba en Belén. Joab y sus hombres caminaron toda la noche hasta que les amaneció[s] en Hebrón(Y).

2 Después de esto, David consultó al Señor y le dijo:
—¿Debo ir a alguna de las ciudades de Judá?
El Señor le contestó:
—Sí, debes ir.
Entonces David preguntó:
—¿A dónde debo ir?
Y el Señor respondió:
—A Hebrón.
2 David fue allá con sus dos mujeres: Ahinóam, la del pueblo de Jezreel, y Abigail, la viuda de Nabal, el de Carmel. 3 También se llevó a sus compañeros, con sus respectivas familias, y se establecieron en las ciudades de Hebrón. 4 Llegaron después los hombres de Judá, y consagraron allí a David como rey de Judá.
Cuando le contaron a David que los de Jabés de Galaad eran los que habían enterrado a Saúl, 5 envió David unos mensajeros a decirles: «Que el Señor los bendiga por tratar con tanta bondad a Saúl, su señor, dándole sepultura. 6 Y que el Señor los trate a ustedes con bondad y fidelidad. Yo, por mi parte, los trataré bien a ustedes por esto que han hecho. 7 Pero ahora, cobren ustedes ánimo y valor, pues aunque ha muerto Saúl, su señor, la tribu de Judá me ha consagrado para que yo sea su rey.»
Israel y Judá, en guerra
8 Pero Abner, hijo de Ner, jefe del ejército de Saúl, tomó a Is-bóset, el hijo de Saúl, y lo llevó a Mahanaim, 9 donde lo consagró como rey de Galaad, de Guesurí, de Jezreel, de Efraín, de Benjamín y de todo Israel. 10 Cuando Is-bóset comenzó a reinar en Israel, tenía cuarenta años, y reinó durante dos años. Pero la tribu de Judá reconocía como rey a David, 11 así que David fue rey de Judá durante siete años y seis meses, y la capital de su reino fue Hebrón.
12 Abner salió entonces de Mahanaim a Gabaón, al frente de las tropas de Is-bóset. 13 Por su parte Joab, hijo de Seruiá, y las tropas de David, salieron de Hebrón y se encontraron con ellos junto al depósito de agua de Gabaón. Los dos ejércitos tomaron posiciones, unos a un lado del depósito y otros al lado opuesto. 14 Entonces Abner le propuso a Joab:
—Que salgan a luchar los jóvenes delante de todos nosotros.
—De acuerdo —contestó Joab.
15 Así pues, para luchar por parte de Benjamín y de Is-bóset, hijo de Saúl, pasaron al frente doce jóvenes soldados, y otros doce por parte de las tropas de David. 16 Cada cual agarró a su contrario por la cabeza y le clavó la espada en el costado, de modo que cayeron todos muertos a la vez. Por eso aquel lugar, que está en Gabaón, fue llamado Helcat-hasurim. 17 El combate fue muy duro aquel día, y Abner y las tropas de Israel fueron derrotados por los soldados de David. 18 Allí estaban los tres hijos de Seruiá: Joab, Abisai y Asael. Este último corría veloz, como un ciervo a campo abierto, 19 y se lanzó en persecución de Abner sin darle ninguna oportunidad de escapar. 20 Y cuando Abner miró hacia atrás, exclamó:
—¡Pero si eres tú, Asael!
—¡Claro que soy yo! —respondió él.
21 Entonces Abner le dijo:
—Deja ya de perseguirme. Mejor agarra a alguno de los criados y quédate con todo lo que lleva encima.
Pero como Asael no quiso dejar de perseguirlo, 22 Abner volvió a decirle:
—¡Deja ya de perseguirme, o me veré obligado a derribarte por tierra! Y luego, ¿con qué cara voy a presentarme ante tu hermano Joab?
23 Como Asael no quiso apartarse, Abner le clavó en el vientre la punta posterior de su lanza, la cual le salió por la espalda, y Asael cayó muerto allí mismo. Y todos los que llegaban al sitio donde había caído muerto Asael, se paraban a verlo. 24 Pero Joab y Abisai siguieron persiguiendo a Abner. A la puesta del sol llegaron a la colina de Amá, que está frente a Guíah, en el camino al desierto de Gabaón. 25 Allí los benjaminitas se reunieron con Abner, y formando un solo ejército tomaron posiciones en la cumbre de un cerro. 26 Entonces Abner le gritó a Joab:
—¿No va a tener fin esta matanza? ¿No te das cuenta de que esto sólo nos traerá amargura? ¿Cuándo vas a ordenar a tu gente que deje de perseguir a sus hermanos?
27 Y Joab contestó:
—Te juro por Dios que si no hubieras dicho esto, mi gente habría seguido persiguiendo a sus hermanos hasta el amanecer.
28 En seguida Joab ordenó que tocaran las trompetas, y toda la gente se detuvo, dejando de perseguir a los israelitas y de luchar contra ellos. 29 Abner y sus hombres caminaron por la llanura de Arabá toda aquella noche, y cortando camino a través del Jordán y de todo Bitrón, llegaron a Mahanaim.
30 Joab dejó de perseguir a Abner y reunió todas sus tropas, y al pasar lista resultó que habían muerto diecinueve oficiales de David, además de Asael. 31 Sin embargo, los seguidores de David habían matado a trescientos sesenta hombres de Benjamín y de Abner.
32 Más tarde, el cuerpo de Asael fue llevado a Belén y enterrado allí, en el sepulcro de su padre. Joab y sus hombres caminaron toda aquella noche, y al amanecer estaban en Hebrón.

2 Pasado algún tiempo, David consultó al Señor:
—¿Debo ir a alguna de las ciudades de Judá?
—Sí, debes ir —respondió el Señor.
—¿Y a qué ciudad quieres que vaya?
—A Hebrón.
2 Así que David fue allá con sus dos esposas, Ajinoán la jezrelita y Abigaíl, la viuda de Nabal de Carmel. 3 Se llevó además a sus hombres, cada cual acompañado de su familia, y todos se establecieron en Hebrón y sus aldeas. 4 Entonces los habitantes de Judá fueron a Hebrón y allí ungieron a David como rey de su tribu. Además, le comunicaron que los habitantes de Jabés de Galaad habían sepultado a Saúl. 5 Entonces David envió a los de Jabés el siguiente mensaje: «Que el Señor los bendiga por haberle sido fieles a su señor Saúl y por darle sepultura. 6 Y ahora, que el Señor muestre a ustedes su amor y fidelidad, aunque yo también quiero recompensarlos por esto que han hecho. 7 Cobren ánimo y sean valientes, pues aunque su señor Saúl ha muerto, la tribu de Judá me ha ungido como su rey».

8 Entretanto, Abner, hijo de Ner, comandante del ejército de Saúl, llevó a Isboset, hijo de Saúl, a la ciudad de Majanayin. 9 Allí lo instauró rey de Galaad, de Asurí, de Jezrel, de Efraín, de Benjamín y de todo Israel.
10 Isboset, hijo de Saúl, tenía cuarenta años cuando fue instaurado rey de Israel y reinó dos años. La tribu de Judá, por su parte, reconoció a David, 11 quien desde Hebrón reinó sobre la tribu de Judá durante siete años y seis meses.
12 Abner, hijo de Ner, salió de Majanayin con las tropas de Isboset, hijo de Saúl, y llegó a Gabaón. 13 Joab, hijo de Sarvia, por su parte, salió al frente de las tropas de David. Los dos ejércitos se encontraron en el estanque de Gabaón y tomaron posiciones en lados opuestos. 14 Entonces Abner dijo a Joab:
—Propongo que salgan unos cuantos jóvenes y midan sus armas en presencia de nosotros.
—De acuerdo —respondió Joab.
15 Así que pasaron al frente doce jóvenes del ejército benjamita de Isboset, hijo de Saúl, y doce de los siervos de David. 16 Cada soldado agarró a su rival por la cabeza y le clavó la espada en el costado, de modo que ambos combatientes murieron al mismo tiempo. Por eso a aquel lugar, que queda cerca de Gabaón, se le llama Jelcat Hazurín.[a]
17 Aquel día la batalla fue muy dura y los siervos de David derrotaron a Abner y a los soldados de Israel.
18 Allí se encontraban Joab, Abisay y Asael, los tres hijos de Sarvia. Asael, que corría tan ligero como una gacela en campo abierto, 19 se lanzó tras Abner y lo persiguió sin vacilar. 20 Al mirar hacia atrás, Abner preguntó:
—¿Acaso no eres tú, Asael?
—¡Claro que sí! —respondió.
21 —¡Déjame tranquilo! —exclamó Abner—. Más te vale que agarres a algún otro y que te quedes con sus armas.
Pero Asael no hizo caso, 22 así que Abner advirtió una vez más:
—¡Deja ya de perseguirme o me veré obligado a matarte! Y entonces, ¿cómo podría mirar a la cara a tu hermano Joab?
23 Como Asael no dejaba de perseguirlo, Abner le dio un golpe con la punta trasera de su lanza y le atravesó el vientre. La lanza salió por la espalda y ahí mismo Asael cayó muerto.
Todos los que pasaban por ahí se detenían a ver el cuerpo de Asael, 24 pero Joab y Abisay se lanzaron tras Abner. Ya se ponía el sol cuando llegaron al collado de Amá, frente a Guiaj, en el camino que lleva al desierto de Gabaón. 25 Entonces los soldados benjamitas se reunieron para apoyar a Abner y, formando un grupo cerrado, tomaron posiciones en lo alto de una colina.
26 Abner gritó a Joab:
—¿Vamos a dejar que siga esta matanza? ¿No te das cuenta de que esto solo traerá amargura? ¿Qué esperas para ordenarles a tus soldados que dejen de perseguir a sus hermanos?
27 Joab respondió:
—Tan cierto como que Dios vive, si no hubieras hablado, mis soldados habrían perseguido a sus hermanos hasta el amanecer.
28 Enseguida Joab hizo tocar la trompeta y todos los soldados, dejando de perseguir a los israelitas, se detuvieron y ya no pelearon más.
29 Toda esa noche Abner y sus hombres atravesaron el Arabá. Después de cruzar el Jordán, siguieron por todo el territorio de Bitrón[b] hasta llegar a Majanayin.
30 Una vez que Joab dejó de perseguir a Abner, regresó y reunió a todo su ejército para contarlo. Además de Asael, faltaban diecinueve de los soldados de David. 31 Sin embargo, los soldados de David habían matado a trescientos sesenta de los soldados benjamitas de Abner. 32 Tomaron luego el cuerpo de Asael y lo sepultaron en Belén, en la tumba de su padre. David Anointed King Over Judah
2 In the course of time, David inquired(A) of the Lord. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked.
The Lord said, “Go up.”
David asked, “Where shall I go?”
“To Hebron,”(B) the Lord answered.
2 So David went up there with his two wives,(C) Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail,(D) the widow of Nabal of Carmel. 3 David also took the men who were with him,(E) each with his family, and they settled in Hebron(F) and its towns. 4 Then the men of Judah came to Hebron,(G) and there they anointed(H) David king over the tribe of Judah.
When David was told that it was the men from Jabesh Gilead(I) who had buried Saul, 5 he sent messengers to them to say to them, “The Lord bless(J) you for showing this kindness to Saul your master by burying him. 6 May the Lord now show you kindness and faithfulness,(K) and I too will show you the same favor because you have done this. 7 Now then, be strong(L) and brave, for Saul your master is dead, and the people of Judah have anointed me king over them.”
War Between the Houses of David and Saul(M)
8 Meanwhile, Abner(N) son of Ner, the commander of Saul’s army, had taken Ish-Bosheth(O) son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.(P) 9 He made him king over Gilead,(Q) Ashuri(R) and Jezreel, and also over Ephraim, Benjamin and all Israel.(S)
10 Ish-Bosheth son of Saul was forty years old when he became king over Israel, and he reigned two years. The tribe of Judah, however, remained loyal to David. 11 The length of time David was king in Hebron over Judah was seven years and six months.(T)
12 Abner son of Ner, together with the men of Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, left Mahanaim and went to Gibeon.(U) 13 Joab(V) son of Zeruiah and David’s men went out and met them at the pool of Gibeon. One group sat down on one side of the pool and one group on the other side.
14 Then Abner said to Joab, “Let’s have some of the young men get up and fight hand to hand in front of us.”
“All right, let them do it,” Joab said.
15 So they stood up and were counted off—twelve men for Benjamin and Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, and twelve for David. 16 Then each man grabbed his opponent by the head and thrust his dagger(W) into his opponent’s side, and they fell down together. So that place in Gibeon was called Helkath Hazzurim.[a]
17 The battle that day was very fierce, and Abner and the Israelites were defeated(X) by David’s men.(Y)
18 The three sons of Zeruiah(Z) were there: Joab,(AA) Abishai(AB) and Asahel.(AC) Now Asahel was as fleet-footed as a wild gazelle.(AD) 19 He chased Abner, turning neither to the right nor to the left as he pursued him. 20 Abner looked behind him and asked, “Is that you, Asahel?”
“It is,” he answered.
21 Then Abner said to him, “Turn aside to the right or to the left; take on one of the young men and strip him of his weapons.” But Asahel would not stop chasing him.
22 Again Abner warned Asahel, “Stop chasing me! Why should I strike you down? How could I look your brother Joab in the face?”(AE)
23 But Asahel refused to give up the pursuit; so Abner thrust the butt of his spear into Asahel’s stomach,(AF) and the spear came out through his back. He fell there and died on the spot. And every man stopped when he came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died.(AG)
24 But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner, and as the sun was setting, they came to the hill of Ammah, near Giah on the way to the wasteland of Gibeon. 25 Then the men of Benjamin rallied behind Abner. They formed themselves into a group and took their stand on top of a hill.
26 Abner called out to Joab, “Must the sword devour(AH) forever? Don’t you realize that this will end in bitterness? How long before you order your men to stop pursuing their fellow Israelites?”
27 Joab answered, “As surely as God lives, if you had not spoken, the men would have continued pursuing them until morning.”
28 So Joab(AI) blew the trumpet,(AJ) and all the troops came to a halt; they no longer pursued Israel, nor did they fight anymore.
29 All that night Abner and his men marched through the Arabah.(AK) They crossed the Jordan, continued through the morning hours[b] and came to Mahanaim.(AL)
30 Then Joab stopped pursuing Abner and assembled the whole army. Besides Asahel, nineteen of David’s men were found missing. 31 But David’s men had killed three hundred and sixty Benjamites who were with Abner. 32 They took Asahel and buried him in his father’s tomb(AM) at Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men marched all night and arrived at Hebron by daybreak.

10 Ishbosheth Saul's son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
12 And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
14 And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.
15 Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
16 And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkathhazzurim, which is in Gibeon.
17 And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
18 And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.
19 And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.
20 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.
21 And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
22 And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?
23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
24 Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
25 And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.
26 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?
27 And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.
28 So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
29 And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.
30 And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David's servants nineteen men and Asahel.
31 But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.
32 And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Bethlehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.
