The commander of Saul's army, Abner son of Ner, had fled with Saul's son Ishbosheth across the Jordan to Mahanaim. There Abner made Ishbosheth king of the territories of Gilead, Asher,[a] Jezreel, Ephraim, and Benjamin, and indeed over all Israel.
