Hushai Saves David

17 Moreover, Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue David tonight. 2 I will come upon him while he is (A)weary and discouraged and throw him into a panic, and all the people who are with him will flee. (B)I will strike down only the king, 3 and I will bring all the people back to you as a bride comes home to her husband. You seek the life of only one man,[a] and all the people will be at peace.” 4 And the advice seemed right in the eyes of Absalom and all the elders of Israel.

5 Then Absalom said, “Call (C)Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear what he has to say.” 6 And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him, “Thus has Ahithophel spoken; shall we do as he says? If not, you speak.” 7 Then Hushai said to Absalom, “This time the counsel that Ahithophel has given is not good.” 8 Hushai said, “You know that your father and his men are mighty men, and that they are enraged,[b] (D)like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Besides, your father is expert in war; he will not spend the night with the people. 9 Behold, even now he has hidden himself in one of the pits or in some other place. And as soon as some of the people fall[c] at the first attack, whoever hears it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.’ 10 Then even the valiant man, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will utterly (E)melt with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and that those who are with him are valiant men. 11 But my counsel is that all Israel be gathered to you, (F)from Dan to Beersheba, (G)as the sand by the sea for multitude, and that you go to battle in person. 12 So we shall come upon him in some place where he is to be found, and we shall light upon him as the dew falls on the ground, and of him and all the men with him not one will be left. 13 If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we shall drag it into the valley, until not even a pebble is to be found there.” 14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” (H)For the Lord had ordained[d] to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the Lord might bring harm upon Absalom.

15 (I)Then Hushai said to Zadok and Abiathar the priests, “Thus and so did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel, and thus and so have I counseled. 16 Now therefore send quickly and tell David, ‘Do not stay tonight at (J)the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over, lest the king and all the people who are with him be (K)swallowed up.’” 17 Now (L)Jonathan and Ahimaaz were waiting at (M)En-rogel. A female servant was to go and tell them, and they were to go and tell King David, for they were not to be seen entering the city. 18 But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So both of them went away quickly and came to the house of a man at (N)Bahurim, who had a well in his courtyard. And they went down into it. 19 (O)And the woman took and spread a covering over the well's mouth and scattered grain on it, and nothing was known of it. 20 When Absalom's servants came to the woman at the house, they said, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” And the woman said to them, “They have gone over the brook[e] of water.” And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.

21 After they had gone, the men came up out of the well, and went and told King David. They said to David, (P)“Arise, and go quickly over the water, for thus and so has Ahithophel counseled against you.” 22 Then David arose, and all the people who were with him, and they crossed the Jordan. By daybreak not one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.

23 When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey and went off home to (Q)his own city. He (R)set his house in order and (S)hanged himself, and he died and was buried in the tomb of his father.

24 Then David came to (T)Mahanaim. And Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel. 25 Now Absalom had set (U)Amasa over the army instead of Joab. Amasa was the son of a man named Ithra the Ishmaelite,[f] who had married Abigal the daughter of (V)Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, Joab's mother. 26 And Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead.

27 When David came to Mahanaim, (W)Shobi the son of Nahash from (X)Rabbah of the Ammonites, and (Y)Machir the son of Ammiel from Lo-debar, and (Z)Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim, 28 brought beds, basins, and earthen vessels, wheat, barley, flour, parched grain, beans and lentils,[g] 29 honey and curds and sheep and cheese from the herd, for David and the people with him to eat, for they said, “The people are hungry and (AA)weary and thirsty (AB)in the wilderness.”

17 Chẳng bao lâu sau đó, ông A-hi-tô-phen đề nghị với Áp-sa-lôm: “Xin bệ hạ cho tôi chọn 12,000 quân để tôi lên đường đuổi theo Đa-vít ngay đêm nay. 2 Tôi sẽ xông vào tấn công lúc ông ta đang mệt mỏi và ngã lòng; ông ta sẽ hoảng sợ; toàn quân ở với ông ta sẽ bỏ chạy, và tôi sẽ giết một mình nhà vua thôi. 3 Tôi sẽ đem toàn quân trở về với bệ hạ; khi toàn quân trở về, ngoại trừ người mà bệ hạ đang tìm hại, lúc bấy giờ cả nước sẽ được bình an vô sự.” 4 Áp-sa-lôm và các trưởng lão Y-sơ-ra-ên đều công nhận kế hoạch đó tốt.

5 Tuy nhiên, Áp-sa-lôm nói: “Hãy mời cả ông Hu-sai, người Ạt-kít, đến nữa, để chúng ta nghe thêm ý kiến ông.” 6 Khi ông Hu-sai đến, Áp-sa-lôm nói với ông: “Ông A-hi-tô-phen sắp đặt kế hoạch như thế này. Chúng ta có nên làm theo không? Nếu không, thì xin ông cho biết ý kiến.”

7 Ông Hu-sai đáp: “Lần này, kế hoạch ông A-hi-tô-phen đưa ra không được tốt.” 8 Ông Hu-sai nói tiếp: “Bệ hạ biết rõ vua cha và người của ông là những dũng sĩ, và họ đang giận dữ như gấu mẹ bị mất con ngoài đồng hoang. Hơn nữa, vua cha là người thạo việc binh đao, ông ta sẽ không ngủ đêm với đạo quân đâu. 9 Hiện giờ có thể ông ta đang ẩn núp trong hầm hố hoặc một nơi nào đó. Nếu ngay trận đầu, có vài người trong hàng ngũ chúng ta ngã xuống, ai nghe được cũng sẽ nói: ‘Đạo quân theo Áp-sa-lôm bị đánh bại.’ 10 Bấy giờ, ngay cả những người có khí phách gan dạ như sư tử cũng khiếp sợ rụng rời, vì toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đều biết rằng cha bệ hạ là một dũng sĩ, và những người theo ông là những người có khí phách.

11 Vậy, tôi đề nghị ta nên tập hợp tất cả những chiến sĩ trong dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, từ thành Đan đến thành Bê-e-sê-ba lại chung quanh bệ hạ. Họ sẽ đông như cát biển, và bệ hạ sẽ đích thân cầm quân ra trận. 12 Chúng ta sẽ đi đánh Đa-vít, bất luận ông ở nơi nào, và chúng ta sẽ đáp xuống trên ông ta như sương rơi phủ mặt đất. Rồi ông ta và những người theo ông ấy, sẽ không một ai sống sót. 13 Còn nếu ông rút quân về một thành nào đó, toàn quân Y-sơ-ra-ên sẽ đem dây thừng đến kéo thành ấy xuống đáy sông cho đến khi không còn tìm thấy một viên sỏi tại đó.” 14 Áp-sa-lôm và toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đều đồng ý rằng kế hoạch của ông Hu-sai, người Ạt-kít, tốt hơn kế hoạch của ông A-hi-tô-phen, vì CHÚA đã quyết định phá hỏng mưu sâu của ông A-hi-tô-phen để giáng họa xuống Áp-sa-lôm.

Giô-na-than Và A-hi-mát Đem Tin Đến Cho Vua Đa-vít

15 Ông Hu-sai liền thuật lại cho hai thầy tế lễ Xa-đốc và A-bia-tha nghe: “Ông A-hi-tô-phen đã bàn như thế này với Áp-sa-lôm và các trưởng lão Y-sơ-ra-ên, còn chính tôi đã bàn như thế này. 16 Vậy bây giờ xin hai thầy sai người đem tin gấp cho vua Đa-vít, căn dặn vua đừng nghỉ đêm nơi chỗ sông cạn, trong đồng hoang, nhưng phải qua sông ngay, kẻo vua và toàn quân theo vua bị tiêu diệt.”

17 Giô-na-than và A-hi-mát đứng đợi sẵn bên suối Rô-ghên. Một nữ tỳ thường ra suối đem tin cho họ, rồi họ đem tin về cho vua Đa-vít. Họ không dám vào thành, vì sợ bị bại lộ. 18 Tuy nhiên, một thanh niên thấy họ và báo cho Áp-sa-lôm biết. Giô-na-than và A-hi-mát vội vàng ra đi, đến nhà một người kia ở Ba-hu-rim. Sân nhà ông này có một cái giếng. Họ leo xuống đó. 19 Bà vợ ông này lấy tấm bố trải lên miệng giếng rồi rải thóc lên. Không ai nghi ngờ gì cả.

20 Lính của Áp-sa-lôm đến nhà hỏi bà: “A-hi-mát và Giô-na-than ở đâu?” Bà đáp: “Họ băng qua suối rồi.” Mấy người lính tìm họ nhưng chẳng thấy, nên quay trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem.

21 Sau khi chúng đi khỏi, hai người từ dưới giếng leo lên, và đi đem tin cho vua Đa-vít. Họ tâu với vua Đa-vít: “Xin bệ hạ và quần thần mau mau đi qua sông, vì ông A-hi-tô-phen đã bày mưu như thế này để hại vua.” 22 Vua Đa-vít và toàn quân theo vua liền đi băng qua sông Giô-đanh. Khi trời hừng sáng, không còn sót lại một người nào chưa qua sông.

Ông A-hi-tô-phen Tự Tử

23 Khi ông A-hi-tô-phen thấy Áp-sa-lôm và các trưởng lão Y-sơ-ra-ên không nghe theo lời bàn của ông, ông thắng lừa về quê, về nhà ông ở thành Ghi-lô. Ông thu xếp việc nhà rồi treo cổ tự tử. Người ta chôn cất ông trong phần mộ của cha ông.

Vua Đa-vít Ở Ma-ha-na-im

24 Vua Đa-vít đến Ma-ha-na-im trong khi Áp-sa-lôm và toàn quân Y-sơ-ra-ên theo ông qua sông Giô-đanh. 25 Áp-sa-lôm cử ông A-ma-sa chỉ huy quân đội thay ông Giô-áp. Ông A-ma-sa là con ông Gít-ra, thuộc dòng họ ông Ích-ma-ên[a] Ông Gít-ra đi lại với bà A-bi-ganh; bà này là con ông Na-hách, và là em gái của bà Xê-ru-gia, mẹ của ông Giô-áp. 26 Quân Y-sơ-ra-ên và Áp-sa-lôm đóng trại trong miền Ga-la-át.

27 Khi vua Đa-vít đến Ma-ha-na-im, ông Sô-bi, con ông Na-hách, từ thành Ráp-ba của người Am-môn, ông Ma-ki, con ông Am-mi-ên, từ thành Lô-đê-ba, và ông Bát-xi-lai, người Ga-la-át, từ thành Rô-ghê-lim, 28 đem mền chiếu, chậu, chén, các thứ đồ gốm đến, cùng với lúa mì, lúa mạch, bột, hạt rang, đậu tằm, đậu lăng, 29 mật ong, sữa chua, chiên dê và phó mát lấy từ sữa bò. Họ dâng những thức ăn đó cho vua và quân binh theo vua dùng, vì họ biết ai đi qua sa mạc cũng đói, mệt, và khát lắm.

17 Ahithophel said to Absalom, “I would[a] choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David. 2 I would attack him while he is weary and weak.(A) I would strike him with terror, and then all the people with him will flee. I would strike down only the king(B) 3 and bring all the people back to you. The death of the man you seek will mean the return of all; all the people will be unharmed.” 4 This plan seemed good to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.

5 But Absalom said, “Summon also Hushai(C) the Arkite, so we can hear what he has to say as well.” 6 When Hushai came to him, Absalom said, “Ahithophel has given this advice. Should we do what he says? If not, give us your opinion.”

7 Hushai replied to Absalom, “The advice Ahithophel has given is not good this time. 8 You know your father and his men; they are fighters, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs.(D) Besides, your father is an experienced fighter;(E) he will not spend the night with the troops. 9 Even now, he is hidden in a cave or some other place.(F) If he should attack your troops first,[b] whoever hears about it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow Absalom.’ 10 Then even the bravest soldier, whose heart is like the heart of a lion,(G) will melt(H) with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a fighter and that those with him are brave.(I)

11 “So I advise you: Let all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba(J)—as numerous as the sand(K) on the seashore—be gathered to you, with you yourself leading them into battle. 12 Then we will attack him wherever he may be found, and we will fall on him as dew settles on the ground. Neither he nor any of his men will be left alive. 13 If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we will drag it down to the valley(L) until not so much as a pebble is left.”

14 Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice(M) of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.”(N) For the Lord had determined to frustrate(O) the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster(P) on Absalom.(Q)

15 Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, “Ahithophel has advised Absalom and the elders of Israel to do such and such, but I have advised them to do so and so. 16 Now send a message at once and tell David, ‘Do not spend the night at the fords in the wilderness;(R) cross over without fail, or the king and all the people with him will be swallowed up.(S)’”

17 Jonathan(T) and Ahimaaz were staying at En Rogel.(U) A female servant was to go and inform them, and they were to go and tell King David, for they could not risk being seen entering the city. 18 But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So the two of them left at once and went to the house of a man in Bahurim.(V) He had a well in his courtyard, and they climbed down into it. 19 His wife took a covering and spread it out over the opening of the well and scattered grain over it. No one knew anything about it.(W)

20 When Absalom’s men came to the woman(X) at the house, they asked, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?”

The woman answered them, “They crossed over the brook.”[c] The men searched but found no one, so they returned to Jerusalem.

21 After they had gone, the two climbed out of the well and went to inform King David. They said to him, “Set out and cross the river at once; Ahithophel has advised such and such against you.” 22 So David and all the people with him set out and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, no one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.

23 When Ahithophel saw that his advice(Y) had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order(Z) and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.

Absalom’s Death

24 David went to Mahanaim,(AA) and Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel. 25 Absalom had appointed Amasa(AB) over the army in place of Joab. Amasa was the son of Jether,[d](AC) an Ishmaelite[e] who had married Abigail,[f] the daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah the mother of Joab. 26 The Israelites and Absalom camped in the land of Gilead.

27 When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash(AD) from Rabbah(AE) of the Ammonites, and Makir(AF) son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and Barzillai(AG) the Gileadite(AH) from Rogelim 28 brought bedding and bowls and articles of pottery. They also brought wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans and lentils,[g] 29 honey and curds, sheep, and cheese from cows’ milk for David and his people to eat.(AI) For they said, “The people have become exhausted and hungry and thirsty in the wilderness.(AJ)”
