Husai deshace el plan de Ahitófel

17 Después Ahitófel le dijo a Absalón:

—Déjame escoger a doce mil hombres, y esta misma noche saldré en persecución de David. 2 Y cuando él esté débil y cansado, caeré sobre él y lo llenaré de miedo, y toda la gente que está con él, huirá. No mataré más que al rey, 3 y luego haré que todo el pueblo se reconcilie contigo, como cuando la recién casada se reconcilia con su esposo. Lo que tú buscas es la muerte de un hombre; y todo el pueblo quedará en paz.

4 El plan pareció bueno a Absalón y a todos los consejeros de Israel. 5 Pero Absalón ordenó que llamaran también a Husai el arquita, para que diera su opinión. 6 Cuando Husai llegó ante Absalón, éste le dijo:

—El plan de Ahitófel es este. ¿Lo llevaremos a cabo, o no? Danos tu opinión.

7 Husai le contestó:

—Esta vez el plan de Ahitófel no es conveniente. 8 Tú bien sabes que tu padre y sus hombres son muy valientes, y que ahora deben estar furiosos como una osa salvaje a la que le han quitado sus crías. Además, tu padre es un hombre acostumbrado a la guerra y no pasará la noche con la demás gente. 9 Ahora mismo ha de estar escondido en una cueva o en algún otro lugar. Por otra parte, apenas corra la voz de que en el primer encuentro han caído algunos de los tuyos, no faltará quien piense que tus seguidores han sido derrotados, 10 y hasta el más valiente, aun el que sea bravo como un león, se desanimará por completo; porque todos en Israel saben que tu padre y sus seguidores son gente valiente. 11 Ahora bien, yo te aconsejaría que se reúnan contigo todos los israelitas que hay desde Dan hasta Beerseba, que son tantos como los granos de arena que hay a la orilla del mar, y que tú personalmente los dirijas en la batalla. 12 Entonces atacaremos a tu padre en cualquier lugar donde se encuentre. Caeremos sobre él como el rocío sobre la tierra, y no quedarán con vida ni él ni ninguno de sus hombres. 13 Incluso si se refugia en alguna ciudad, todos los israelitas llevaremos cuerdas y, piedra por piedra, arrastraremos esa ciudad hasta el arroyo, y no quedará allí ni una sola piedra.

14 Absalón y todos los israelitas estuvieron de acuerdo en que el plan de Husai era mejor que el de Ahitófel. (Y es que el Señor había determinado frustrar el plan acertado de Ahitófel, para acarrear el desastre sobre Absalón.) 15 Después Husai informó a los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar del consejo que Ahitófel había dado a Absalón y a los ancianos de Israel, y del consejo que él mismo les había dado, 16 a fin de que avisaran rápidamente a David, advirtiéndole que no pasara aquella noche en los llanos del desierto, sino que pasara sin falta al otro lado del Jordán para que no los mataran ni a él ni a sus hombres.

17 Como Jonatán y Ahimaas estaban en En-roguel, pues no podían arriesgarse a que los vieran en la ciudad, una criada fue a avisarles, e inmediatamente ellos salieron a contárselo al rey David. 18 Sin embargo, un muchacho los vio y fue a decírselo a Absalón. Entonces ellos se dieron prisa y llegaron a la casa de un vecino de Bahurim, y se metieron en un pozo que había en el patio. 19 Luego la esposa de ese hombre puso una tapa sobre el pozo, y encima esparció trigo trillado. De esto nadie supo nada. 20 Y cuando llegaron los seguidores de Absalón, preguntaron a la mujer:

—¿Dónde están Ahimaas y Jonatán?

—Pasaron por aquí, en dirección al río —les contestó la mujer.

Entonces los seguidores de Absalón fueron en su busca, pero al no encontrarlos regresaron a Jerusalén. 21 Y después que aquéllos se fueron, Ahimaas y Jonatán salieron del pozo y corrieron a poner sobre aviso al rey David; le dijeron que se levantara en seguida y cruzara el río, porque Ahitófel había aconsejado que los atacaran. 22 Entonces David y toda la gente que le acompañaba se levantaron rápidamente y cruzaron el río Jordán. Al amanecer del día siguiente, no había nadie que no lo hubiera cruzado.

23 Cuando Ahitófel vio que su plan no se había puesto en práctica, aparejó su asno y se fue a su casa, en su pueblo natal, y después de arreglar sus asuntos familiares, se ahorcó. Así murió, y fue enterrado en el sepulcro de su padre.

David en Mahanaim

24 David llegó a Mahanaim en el momento en que Absalón cruzaba el Jordán con todos los israelitas. 25 Absalón había puesto a Amasá al frente del ejército, en lugar de Joab. Amasá era hijo de un ismaelita llamado Itrá, que había tenido relaciones íntimas con Abigail, hija de Nahas y hermana de Seruiá, la madre de Joab.

26 Absalón acampó con los israelitas en territorio de Galaad, 27 y cuando David llegó a Mahanaim, salieron a recibirlo Sobí, hijo de Nahas, que era de Rabá de Amón; Maquir, hijo de Amiel, que era de Lodebar; y Barzilai, que era de Roguelim de Galaad. 28 Y le llevaron camas, palanganas y ollas de barro, y también trigo, cebada, harina, grano tostado, habas, lentejas, 29 miel, cuajada y queso de vaca y de oveja, para que comiera David y la gente que lo acompañaba; pues pensaron que, viniendo del desierto, estarían cansados, hambrientos y sedientos.

17 Además, Ajitofel propuso a Absalón lo siguiente:

—Yo escogería doce mil soldados y esta misma noche saldría en busca de David. 2 Como él debe estar cansado y débil, lo atacaría, le haría sentir mucho miedo y pondría en fuga al resto de la gente que está con él. Pero mataría solamente al rey 3 y los demás se los traería a usted. La muerte del hombre que usted busca dará por resultado el regreso de los otros,[a] y todo el pueblo quedará en paz.

4 La propuesta le pareció acertada a Absalón, lo mismo que a todos los jefes de Israel, 5 pero Absalón dijo:

—Llamemos también a Husay, el arquita, para ver cuál es su opinión.

6 Cuando Husay llegó, Absalón preguntó:

—¿Debemos adoptar el plan que Ajitofel nos ha propuesto? Si no, ¿qué propones tú?

7 —Esta vez el plan de Ajitofel no es bueno —respondió Husay—. 8 Usted conoce bien a su padre David y a sus soldados: son valientes y deben estar furiosos como una osa salvaje a la que le han robado su cría. Además, su padre tiene mucha experiencia como hombre de guerra y no ha de pasar la noche con las tropas. 9 Ya debe de estar escondido en alguna cueva o en otro lugar. Si él ataca primero,[b] cualquiera que se entere dirá: “Ha habido una matanza entre las tropas de Absalón”. 10 Entonces aun los soldados más valientes, que son tan bravos como un león, se van a acobardar, pues todos los israelitas saben que David, su padre, es un gran soldado y cuenta con hombres muy valientes.

11 »El plan que yo propongo es el siguiente: Convoque usted a todos los israelitas que hay, desde Dan hasta Berseba. Son tan numerosos como la arena a la orilla del mar, y usted mismo debe dirigirlos en la batalla. 12 Atacaremos a David, no importa dónde se encuentre; caeremos sobre él como el rocío que cae sobre la tierra. No quedarán vivos ni él ni ninguno de sus soldados. 13 Y si llega a refugiarse en algún pueblo, todos los israelitas llevaremos sogas a ese lugar y juntos arrastraremos a ese pueblo hasta el arroyo, de modo que no quede allí ni una piedra».

14 Absalón y todos los israelitas dijeron:

—El plan de Husay, el arquita, es mejor que el de Ajitofel.

Esto sucedió porque el Señor había determinado hacer fracasar el consejo de Ajitofel, aunque era el más acertado, y de ese modo llevar a Absalón a la ruina.

15 Entonces Husay dijo a los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar:

—Ajitofel propuso tal y tal plan a Absalón y a los jefes de Israel, pero yo propuse este otro. 16 Dense prisa y mándenle este mensaje a David: “No pase usted la noche en las llanuras del desierto; más bien, cruce de inmediato al otro lado, no vaya a ser que Su Majestad y quienes lo acompañan sean aniquilados”.

17 Jonatán y Ajimaz se habían quedado en Enroguel. Como no se podían arriesgar a que los vieran entrar en la ciudad, una criada estaba encargada de darles la información para que ellos se la pasaran al rey David. 18 Sin embargo, un joven los vio y se lo hizo saber a Absalón, así que ellos se fueron de allí enseguida. Cuando llegaron a la casa de cierto hombre en Bajurín, se metieron en un pozo que él tenía en el patio. 19 La esposa de aquel hombre cubrió el pozo y esparció trigo sobre la tapa. De esto nadie se enteró.

20 Al pasar los soldados de Absalón por la casa, preguntaron a la mujer:

—¿Dónde están Jonatán y Ajimaz?

—Cruzaron el arroyo[c] —respondió ella.

Los soldados salieron en busca de ellos, pero como no pudieron encontrarlos, regresaron a Jerusalén. 21 Después de que los soldados se fueron, Jonatán y Ajimaz salieron del pozo y se dirigieron adonde estaba David para ponerlo sobre aviso. Le dijeron:

—Crucen el río a toda prisa, pues Ajitofel ha aconsejado que los ataquen.

22 Por tanto, David y quienes lo acompañaban se fueron y cruzaron el Jordán antes de que amaneciera. Todos sin excepción lo cruzaron.

23 Ajitofel, por su parte, al ver que Absalón no había seguido su consejo, aparejó el asno y se fue a su pueblo. Cuando llegó a su casa, luego de arreglar sus asuntos, fue y se ahorcó. Así murió, y fue enterrado en la tumba de su padre.

24 David se dirigió a Majanayin y Absalón lo siguió, cruzando el Jordán con todos los israelitas. 25 Ahora bien, en lugar de Joab, Absalón había nombrado general de su ejército a Amasá, que era hijo de un hombre llamado Itrá,[d] el cual era israelita[e] y se había casado con Abigaíl, hija de Najás y hermana de Sarvia, la madre de Joab. 26 Los israelitas que estaban con Absalón acamparon en el territorio de Galaad.

27 Cuando David llegó a Majanayin, allí estaban Sobí, hijo de Najás, oriundo de Rabá, ciudad amonita; Maquir, hijo de Amiel, que era de Lo Debar; y Barzilay, el galaadita, habitante de Roguelín. 28 Estos habían llevado camas, vasijas y ollas de barro, y también trigo, cebada, harina, grano tostado, habas, lentejas,[f] 29 miel, cuajada, queso de vaca y ovejas. Ofrecieron esos alimentos a David y a su comitiva para que se los comieran, pues pensaban que en el desierto esta gente habría pasado hambre y sed, y estaría muy cansada.

Husai dwarsboomt de plannen van Achitofel

17 Achitofel zei tegen Absalom: "Laat mij vannacht nog met 12.000 mannen David achtervolgen. 2 Dan kan ik hem overvallen terwijl hij moe en moedeloos is. Hij zal bang worden en alle mensen die bij hem zijn, zullen vluchten. Zo hoef ik alleen de koning te doden. 3 De mannen die bij hem waren, zullen bij u terugkomen. Want als David dood is, kiest iedereen uw kant. Dan zal er weer vrede in het land zijn." 4 Absalom en de leiders van Israël vonden dit een goed plan.

5 Maar Absalom zei: "Roep ook Husai. Laten we ook horen wat híj te zeggen heeft." 6 Toen Husai bij Absalom kwam, zei Absalom tegen hem: "Dit-en-dit heeft Achitofel aangeraden. Zullen we doen wat hij zegt? Als jij een beter plan hebt, zeg het dan." 7 Husai zei tegen Absalom: "Achitofel heeft deze keer geen goede raad gegeven. 8 U weet dat uw vader en zijn mannen helden zijn. Bovendien zijn ze net zo woedend als een berin waarvan de jongen zijn gedood. Uw vader is ook nog eens een heel goed krijgsman. Hij zal het volk vannacht geen rust gunnen. 9 Hij houdt zich nu verborgen in een grot of bergkloof. Als Achitofel hen nu al overvalt, kunnen zij zich van daaruit gemakkelijk verdedigen. Achitofel zal door David verslagen worden. Dat zullen de mensen horen. 10 Dan zullen zelfs uw dapperste mannen alle moed verliezen. Want heel Israël weet dat uw vader een held is en dat er dappere mannen bij hem zijn. 11 Daarom raad ik u aan: verzamel eerst alle mannen uit heel Israël, vanaf Dan in het noorden tot aan Berseba in het zuiden. Vorm met hen een leger, zo ontelbaar als het zand bij de zee. Ga zelf met dat leger mee. 12 Dan zullen we hem met dat leger in zijn schuilplaats overvallen. We zullen ons op hem storten, zoals de dauw de aarde bedekt. Van al zijn mannen zal er niet één in leven blijven. 13 En als hij zich in een stad heeft teruggetrokken, zal heel Israël touwen brengen en om die stad slaan. Daarmee slepen we de hele stad mee. We werpen die stad in de rivier, zodat er zelfs geen steentje van overblijft."

14 Absalom en zijn mannen vonden de raad van Husai beter dan de raad van Achitofel. Want de Heer had ervoor gezorgd dat ze niet wilden luisteren naar het verstandige plan van Achitofel. De Heer wilde Absalom ten val brengen.

David wordt gewaarschuwd

15 Daarna ging Husai naar de priesters Zadok en Abjatar. Hij vertelde: "Dit-en-dit heeft Achitofel als raad gegeven aan Absalom en de leiders van Israël. Maar ik heb dat-en-dat aangeraden. 16 Ga nu snel naar David. Zeg tegen hem: 'Blijf vannacht niet aan deze kant van de woestijn. Steek snel over naar de andere kant, anders zult u gedood worden met iedereen die bij u is.' "

17 Jonatan en Ahimaäz wachtten bij de bron Rogel. Een slavin kwam hun dit bericht brengen. Zij brachten het bericht weer over aan koning David. Ze deden het zo, omdat ze zelf niet in de stad gezien mochten worden. 18 Maar een jongen zag hen en vertelde het aan Absalom. De twee mannen vluchtten en kwamen bij het huis van een man in Bahurim. Deze man had in zijn tuin een waterput in de grond. Daar klommen ze in. 19 De vrouw van de man legde een kleed over de put en strooide er graankorrels overheen. Zo was er niets van de put te zien. 20 Toen de mannen van Absalom bij het huis kwamen, vroegen ze de vrouw: "Waar zijn Ahimaäz en Jonatan?" De vrouw antwoordde: "Ze zijn dat beekje overgestoken." De mannen vertrokken weer om hen te zoeken. Toen ze hen niet konden vinden, gingen ze terug naar Jeruzalem.

21 Toen Absaloms mannen waren vertrokken, klommen de twee uit de put. Haastig gingen ze naar koning David om hem alles te vertellen. Ze zeiden tegen David: "Steek zo snel mogelijk de Jordaan over. Want Achitofel heeft zo-en-zo aan Absalom aangeraden." 22 Toen stak David met alle mensen die bij hem waren de Jordaan over. Toen het dag werd, was iedereen aan de overkant.

23 Achitofel vond het vreselijk dat Absalom niet had gedaan wat hij hem had aangeraden. Hij ging op zijn ezel naar huis in de stad waar hij woonde. Daar regelde hij alles voor zijn familie. Toen hing hij zich op. Zo stierf hij. Hij werd begraven in het graf van zijn vader.

De strijd tussen David en Absalom

24 David was intussen bij Mahanaïm aangekomen. Absalom was met het leger van Israël de Jordaan overgestoken. 25 Hij had Amasa legeraanvoerder gemaakt in de plaats van Joab. (Amasa was de zoon van een Israëliet die Jetra heette. Jetra was getrouwd met Abigaïl, een dochter van Nahas en een zus van Zeruja, de moeder van Joab.[a]) 26 Absalom zette zijn legerkamp op in Gilead.

27 In Mahanaïm kwamen Sobi de zoon van Nahas (uit Rabba van de Ammonieten), Machir de zoon van Ammiël (uit Lodebar) en Barzillai (uit Rogelim in Gilead) naar David toe. 28 Ze brachten van alles voor hem en zijn mannen mee: dekens, schalen, potten en pannen, graan, meel, geroosterd graan, bonen, geroosterde linzen, honing, boter, 29 schapen, geiten en kaas. "Want," zeiden ze, "de mannen zullen wel hongerig, dorstig en moe zijn geworden in de woestijn." (lees verder)

17 Ahithophel said to Absalom, “I would[a] choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David. 2 I would attack him while he is weary and weak.(A) I would strike him with terror, and then all the people with him will flee. I would strike down only the king(B) 3 and bring all the people back to you. The death of the man you seek will mean the return of all; all the people will be unharmed.” 4 This plan seemed good to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.

5 But Absalom said, “Summon also Hushai(C) the Arkite, so we can hear what he has to say as well.” 6 When Hushai came to him, Absalom said, “Ahithophel has given this advice. Should we do what he says? If not, give us your opinion.”

7 Hushai replied to Absalom, “The advice Ahithophel has given is not good this time. 8 You know your father and his men; they are fighters, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs.(D) Besides, your father is an experienced fighter;(E) he will not spend the night with the troops. 9 Even now, he is hidden in a cave or some other place.(F) If he should attack your troops first,[b] whoever hears about it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow Absalom.’ 10 Then even the bravest soldier, whose heart is like the heart of a lion,(G) will melt(H) with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a fighter and that those with him are brave.(I)

11 “So I advise you: Let all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba(J)—as numerous as the sand(K) on the seashore—be gathered to you, with you yourself leading them into battle. 12 Then we will attack him wherever he may be found, and we will fall on him as dew settles on the ground. Neither he nor any of his men will be left alive. 13 If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we will drag it down to the valley(L) until not so much as a pebble is left.”

14 Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice(M) of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.”(N) For the Lord had determined to frustrate(O) the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster(P) on Absalom.(Q)

15 Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, “Ahithophel has advised Absalom and the elders of Israel to do such and such, but I have advised them to do so and so. 16 Now send a message at once and tell David, ‘Do not spend the night at the fords in the wilderness;(R) cross over without fail, or the king and all the people with him will be swallowed up.(S)’”

17 Jonathan(T) and Ahimaaz were staying at En Rogel.(U) A female servant was to go and inform them, and they were to go and tell King David, for they could not risk being seen entering the city. 18 But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So the two of them left at once and went to the house of a man in Bahurim.(V) He had a well in his courtyard, and they climbed down into it. 19 His wife took a covering and spread it out over the opening of the well and scattered grain over it. No one knew anything about it.(W)

20 When Absalom’s men came to the woman(X) at the house, they asked, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?”

The woman answered them, “They crossed over the brook.”[c] The men searched but found no one, so they returned to Jerusalem.

21 After they had gone, the two climbed out of the well and went to inform King David. They said to him, “Set out and cross the river at once; Ahithophel has advised such and such against you.” 22 So David and all the people with him set out and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, no one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.

23 When Ahithophel saw that his advice(Y) had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order(Z) and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.

Absalom’s Death

24 David went to Mahanaim,(AA) and Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel. 25 Absalom had appointed Amasa(AB) over the army in place of Joab. Amasa was the son of Jether,[d](AC) an Ishmaelite[e] who had married Abigail,[f] the daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah the mother of Joab. 26 The Israelites and Absalom camped in the land of Gilead.

27 When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash(AD) from Rabbah(AE) of the Ammonites, and Makir(AF) son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and Barzillai(AG) the Gileadite(AH) from Rogelim 28 brought bedding and bowls and articles of pottery. They also brought wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans and lentils,[g] 29 honey and curds, sheep, and cheese from cows’ milk for David and his people to eat.(AI) For they said, “The people have become exhausted and hungry and thirsty in the wilderness.(AJ)”
