17 Achitophel dit à Absalom: Laisse-moi choisir douze mille hommes! Je me lèverai, et je poursuivrai David cette nuit même.
2 Je le surprendrai pendant qu'il est fatigué et que ses mains sont affaiblies, je l'épouvanterai, et tout le peuple qui est avec lui s'enfuira. Je frapperai le roi seul,
3 et je ramènerai à toi tout le peuple; la mort de l'homme à qui tu en veux assurera le retour de tous, et tout le peuple sera en paix.
4 Cette parole plut à Absalom et à tous les anciens d'Israël.
5 Cependant Absalom dit: Appelez encore Huschaï, l'Arkien, et que nous entendions aussi ce qu'il dira.
6 Huschaï vint auprès d'Absalom, et Absalom lui dit: Voici comment a parlé Achitophel: devons-nous faire ce qu'il a dit, ou non? Parle, toi!
7 Huschaï répondit à Absalom: Pour cette fois le conseil qu'a donné Achitophel n'est pas bon.
8 Et Huschaï dit: Tu connais la bravoure de ton père et de ses gens, ils sont furieux comme le serait dans les champs une ourse à qui l'on aurait enlevé ses petits. Ton père est un homme de guerre, et il ne passera pas la nuit avec le peuple;
9 voici maintenant, il est caché dans quelque fosse ou dans quelque autre lieu. Et si, dès le commencement, il en est qui tombent sous leurs coups, on ne tardera pas à l'apprendre et l'on dira: Il y a une défaite parmi le peuple qui suit Absalom!
10 Alors le plus vaillant, eût-il un coeur de lion, sera saisi d'épouvante; car tout Israël sait que ton père est un héros et qu'il a des braves avec lui.
11 Je conseille donc que tout Israël se rassemble auprès de toi, depuis Dan jusqu'à Beer Schéba, multitude pareille au sable qui est sur le bord de la mer. Tu marcheras en personne au combat.
12 Nous arriverons à lui en quelque lieu que nous le trouvions, et nous tomberons sur lui comme la rosée tombe sur le sol; et pas un n'échappera, ni lui ni aucun des hommes qui sont avec lui.
13 S'il se retire dans une ville, tout Israël portera des cordes vers cette ville, et nous la traînerons au torrent, jusqu'à ce qu'on n'en trouve plus une pierre.
14 Absalom et tous les gens d'Israël dirent: Le conseil de Huschaï, l'Arkien, vaut mieux que le conseil d'Achitophel. Or l'Éternel avait résolu d'anéantir le bon conseil d'Achitophel, afin d'amener le malheur sur Absalom.
15 Huschaï dit aux sacrificateurs Tsadok et Abiathar: Achitophel a donné tel et tel conseil à Absalom et aux anciens d'Israël; et moi, j'ai conseillé telle et telle chose.
16 Maintenant, envoyez tout de suite informer David et faites-lui dire: Ne passe point la nuit dans les plaines du désert, mais va plus loin, de peur que le roi et tout le peuple qui est avec lui ne soient exposés à périr.
17 Jonathan et Achimaats se tenaient à En Roguel. Une servante vint leur dire d'aller informer le roi David; car ils n'osaient pas se montrer et entrer dans la ville.
18 Un jeune homme les aperçut, et le rapporta à Absalom. Mais ils partirent tous deux en hâte, et ils arrivèrent à Bachurim à la maison d'un homme qui avait un puits dans sa cour, et ils y descendirent.
19 La femme prit une couverture qu'elle étendit sur l'ouverture du puits, et elle y répandit du grain pilé pour qu'on ne se doutât de rien.
20 Les serviteurs d'Absalom entrèrent dans la maison auprès de cette femme, et dirent: Où sont Achimaats et Jonathan? La femme leur répondit: Ils ont passé le ruisseau. Ils cherchèrent, et ne les trouvant pas, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem.
21 Après leur départ, Achimaats et Jonathan remontèrent du puits et allèrent informer le roi David. Ils dirent à David: Levez-vous et hâtez-vous de passer l'eau, car Achitophel a conseillé contre vous telle chose.
22 David et tout le peuple qui était avec lui se levèrent et ils passèrent le Jourdain; à la lumière du matin, il n'y en avait pas un qui fût resté à l'écart, pas un qui n'eût passé le Jourdain.
23 Achitophel, voyant que son conseil n'était pas suivi, sella son âne et partit pour s'en aller chez lui dans sa ville. Il donna ses ordres à sa maison, et il s'étrangla. C'est ainsi qu'il mourut, et on l'enterra dans le sépulcre de son père.
24 David arriva à Mahanaïm. Et Absalom passa le Jourdain, lui et tous les hommes d'Israël avec lui.
25 Absalom mit Amasa à la tête de l'armée, en remplacement de Joab; Amasa était fils d'un homme appelé Jithra, l'Israélite, qui était allé vers Abigal, fille de Nachasch et soeur de Tseruja, mère de Joab.
26 Israël et Absalom campèrent dans le pays de Galaad.
27 Lorsque David fut arrivé à Mahanaïm, Schobi, fils de Nachasch, de Rabba des fils d'Ammon, Makir, fils d'Ammiel, de Lodebar, et Barzillaï, le Galaadite, de Roguelim,
28 apportèrent des lits, des bassins, des vases de terre, du froment, de l'orge, de la farine, du grain rôti, des fèves, des lentilles, des pois rôtis,
29 du miel, de la crème, des brebis, et des fromages de vache. Ils apportèrent ces choses à David et au peuple qui était avec lui, afin qu'ils mangeassent; car ils disaient: Ce peuple a dû souffrir de la faim, de la fatigue et de la soif, dans le désert.

The Advice of Ahithophel and Hushai
17 Moreover Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Now let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue David tonight. 2 I will come upon him while he is (A)weary and weak, and make him [a]afraid. And all the people who are with him will flee, and I will (B)strike only the king. 3 Then I will bring back all the people to you. When all return except the man whom you seek, all the people will be at peace.” 4 And the saying pleased Absalom and all the (C)elders of Israel.
The Advice of Hushai
5 Then Absalom said, “Now call Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear what he (D)says too.” 6 And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom spoke to him, saying, “Ahithophel has spoken in this manner. Shall we do as he says? If not, speak up.”
7 So Hushai said to Absalom: “The advice that Ahithophel has given is not good at this time. 8 For,” said Hushai, “you know your father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are enraged in their minds, like (E)a bear robbed of her cubs in the field; and your father is a man of war, and will not camp with the people. 9 Surely by now he is hidden in some pit, or in some other place. And it will be, when some of them are overthrown at the first, that whoever hears it will say, ‘There is a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.’ 10 And even he who is valiant, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will (F)melt completely. For all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and those who are with him are valiant men. 11 Therefore I advise that all Israel be fully gathered to you, (G)from Dan to Beersheba, (H)like the sand that is by the sea for multitude, and that you go to battle in person. 12 So we will come upon him in some place where he may be found, and we will fall on him as the dew falls on the ground. And of him and all the men who are with him there shall not be left so much as one. 13 Moreover, if he has withdrawn into a city, then all Israel shall bring ropes to that city; and we will (I)pull it into the river, until there is not one small stone found there.”
14 So Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Archite is better than the advice of Ahithophel.” For (J)the Lord had purposed to defeat the good advice of Ahithophel, to the intent that the Lord might bring disaster on Absalom.
Hushai Warns David to Escape
15 (K)Then Hushai said to Zadok and Abiathar the priests, “Thus and so Ahithophel advised Absalom and the elders of Israel, and thus and so I have advised. 16 Now therefore, send quickly and tell David, saying, ‘Do not spend this night (L)in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily cross over, lest the king and all the people who are with him be swallowed up.’ ” 17 (M)Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz (N)stayed at (O)En Rogel, for they dared not be seen coming into the city; so a female servant would come and tell them, and they would go and tell King David. 18 Nevertheless a lad saw them, and told Absalom. But both of them went away quickly and came to a man’s house (P)in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down into it. 19 (Q)Then the woman took and spread a covering over the well’s mouth, and spread ground grain on it; and the thing was not known. 20 And when Absalom’s servants came to the woman at the house, they said, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?”
So (R)the woman said to them, “They have gone over the water brook.”
And when they had searched and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. 21 Now it came to pass, after they had departed, that they came up out of the well and went and told King David, and said to David, (S)“Arise and cross over the water quickly. For thus has Ahithophel advised against you.” 22 So David and all the people who were with him arose and crossed over the Jordan. By morning light not one of them was left who had not gone over the Jordan.
23 Now when Ahithophel saw that his advice was not followed, he saddled a donkey, and arose and went home to (T)his house, to his city. Then he [b]put his (U)household in order, and (V)hanged himself, and died; and he was buried in his father’s tomb.
24 Then David went to (W)Mahanaim. And Absalom crossed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him. 25 And Absalom made (X)Amasa captain of the army instead of Joab. This Amasa was the son of a man whose name was [c]Jithra, an [d]Israelite, who had gone in to (Y)Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, Joab’s mother. 26 So Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead.
27 Now it happened, when David had come to Mahanaim, that (Z)Shobi the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the people of Ammon, (AA)Machir the son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and (AB)Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim, 28 brought beds and basins, earthen vessels and wheat, barley and flour, parched grain and beans, lentils and parched seeds, 29 honey and curds, sheep and cheese of the herd, for David and the people who were with him to eat. For they said, “The people are hungry and weary and thirsty (AC)in the wilderness.”

Hushai Saves David
17 Moreover, Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue David tonight. 2 I will come upon him while he is (A)weary and discouraged and throw him into a panic, and all the people who are with him will flee. (B)I will strike down only the king, 3 and I will bring all the people back to you as a bride comes home to her husband. You seek the life of only one man,[a] and all the people will be at peace.” 4 And the advice seemed right in the eyes of Absalom and all the elders of Israel.
5 Then Absalom said, “Call (C)Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear what he has to say.” 6 And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him, “Thus has Ahithophel spoken; shall we do as he says? If not, you speak.” 7 Then Hushai said to Absalom, “This time the counsel that Ahithophel has given is not good.” 8 Hushai said, “You know that your father and his men are mighty men, and that they are enraged,[b] (D)like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Besides, your father is expert in war; he will not spend the night with the people. 9 Behold, even now he has hidden himself in one of the pits or in some other place. And as soon as some of the people fall[c] at the first attack, whoever hears it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.’ 10 Then even the valiant man, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will utterly (E)melt with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and that those who are with him are valiant men. 11 But my counsel is that all Israel be gathered to you, (F)from Dan to Beersheba, (G)as the sand by the sea for multitude, and that you go to battle in person. 12 So we shall come upon him in some place where he is to be found, and we shall light upon him as the dew falls on the ground, and of him and all the men with him not one will be left. 13 If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we shall drag it into the valley, until not even a pebble is to be found there.” 14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” (H)For the Lord had ordained[d] to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the Lord might bring harm upon Absalom.
15 (I)Then Hushai said to Zadok and Abiathar the priests, “Thus and so did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel, and thus and so have I counseled. 16 Now therefore send quickly and tell David, ‘Do not stay tonight at (J)the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over, lest the king and all the people who are with him be (K)swallowed up.’” 17 Now (L)Jonathan and Ahimaaz were waiting at (M)En-rogel. A female servant was to go and tell them, and they were to go and tell King David, for they were not to be seen entering the city. 18 But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So both of them went away quickly and came to the house of a man at (N)Bahurim, who had a well in his courtyard. And they went down into it. 19 (O)And the woman took and spread a covering over the well's mouth and scattered grain on it, and nothing was known of it. 20 When Absalom's servants came to the woman at the house, they said, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” And the woman said to them, “They have gone over the brook[e] of water.” And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.
21 After they had gone, the men came up out of the well, and went and told King David. They said to David, (P)“Arise, and go quickly over the water, for thus and so has Ahithophel counseled against you.” 22 Then David arose, and all the people who were with him, and they crossed the Jordan. By daybreak not one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.
23 When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey and went off home to (Q)his own city. He (R)set his house in order and (S)hanged himself, and he died and was buried in the tomb of his father.
24 Then David came to (T)Mahanaim. And Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel. 25 Now Absalom had set (U)Amasa over the army instead of Joab. 17 亚希多弗又对押沙龙说：“求你准我挑选一万二千人，今夜我就起身追赶大卫， 2 趁他疲乏手软，我忽然追上他，使他惊惶。跟随他的民必都逃跑，我就单杀王一人， 3 使众民都归顺你。你所寻找的人既然死了，众民就如已经归顺你。这样，也都平安无事了。” 4 押沙龙和以色列的长老都以这话为美。
5 押沙龙说：“要召亚基人户筛来，我们也要听他怎样说。” 6 户筛到了押沙龙面前，押沙龙向他说：“亚希多弗是如此如此说的，我们照着他的话行可以不可以？若不可，你就说吧。” 7 户筛对押沙龙说：“亚希多弗这次所定的谋不善。” 8 户筛又说：“你知道，你父亲和跟随他的人都是勇士，现在他们心里恼怒，如同田野丢崽子的母熊一般，而且你父亲是个战士，必不和民一同住宿。 9 他现今或藏在坑中或在别处，若有人首先被杀，凡听见的必说，跟随押沙龙的民被杀了。 10 虽有人胆大如狮子，他的心也必消化。因为以色列人都知道你父亲是英雄，跟随他的人也都是勇士。 11 依我之计，不如将以色列众人从但直到别是巴，如同海边的沙那样多聚集到你这里来，你也亲自率领他们出战。 12 这样，我们在何处遇见他，就下到他那里，如同露水下在地上一般，连他带跟随他的人，一个也不留下。 13 他若进了哪一座城，以色列众人必带绳子去，将那城拉到河里，甚至连一块小石头都不剩下。” 14 押沙龙和以色列众人说：“亚基人户筛的计谋比亚希多弗的计谋更好。”这是因耶和华定意破坏亚希多弗的良谋，为要降祸于押沙龙。

15 户筛对祭司撒督和亚比亚他说：“亚希多弗为押沙龙和以色列的长老所定的计谋是如此如此，我所定的计谋是如此如此。 16 现在你们要急速打发人去，告诉大卫说，今夜不可住在旷野的渡口，务要过河，免得王和跟随他的人都被吞灭。” 17 那时，约拿单和亚希玛斯在隐罗结那里等候，不敢进城，恐怕被人看见。有一个使女出来，将这话告诉他们，他们就去报信给大卫王。 18 然而有一个童子看见他们，就去告诉押沙龙。他们急忙跑到巴户琳某人的家里。那人院中有一口井，他们就下到井里。 19 那家的妇人用盖盖上井口，又在上头铺上碎麦，事就没有泄漏。 20 押沙龙的仆人来到那家，问妇人说：“亚希玛斯和约拿单在哪里？”妇人说：“他们过了河了。”仆人找他们，找不着，就回耶路撒冷去了。
亚希多弗缢死
21 他们走后，二人从井里上来，去告诉大卫王说：“亚希多弗如此如此定计害你，你们务要起来，快快过河。” 22 于是大卫和跟随他的人都起来，过约旦河。到了天亮，无一人不过约旦河的。 23 亚希多弗见不依从他的计谋，就备上驴，归回本城。到了家，留下遗言，便吊死了，葬在他父亲的坟墓里。
押沙龙追袭大卫
24 大卫到了玛哈念，押沙龙和跟随他的以色列人也都过了约旦河。 25 押沙龙立亚玛撒做元帅，代替约押。亚玛撒是以实玛利人[a]以特拉的儿子，以特拉曾与拿辖的女儿亚比该亲近，这亚比该与约押的母亲洗鲁雅是姐妹。 26 押沙龙和以色列人都安营在基列地。
27 大卫到了玛哈念，亚扪族的拉巴人拿辖的儿子朔比，罗底巴人亚米利的儿子玛吉，基列的罗基琳人巴西莱， 28 带着被、褥、盆、碗、瓦器、小麦、大麦、麦面、炒谷、豆子、红豆、炒豆、 29 蜂蜜、奶油、绵羊、奶饼，供给大卫和跟随他的人吃。他们说：“民在旷野，必饥渴困乏了。”
