17 Aitofel disse a Absalão: “Permita-me escolher doze mil homens para sair em perseguição a Davi ainda esta noite. 2 Eu o alcançarei enquanto está exausto e desanimado. Farei que ele entre em pânico, e assim todos os seus soldados fugirão. Então matarei apenas o rei 3 e trarei todo o exército para o senhor. A morte do homem a quem o senhor busca lhe trará de volta os demais. Assim, ficará em paz com todo o povo”. 4 O plano pareceu bom a Absalão e a todas as autoridades de Israel.
Husai contesta o conselho de Aitofel
5 Depois, porém, Absalão disse: “Tragam Husai, o arquita. Vejamos qual é a opinião dele”. 6 Quando Husai chegou, Absalão lhe contou o que Aitofel tinha dito. Então perguntou: “Qual é sua opinião? Devemos seguir o conselho de Aitofel? Se não, o que você sugere?”.
7 Husai respondeu a Absalão: “Desta vez o conselho de Aitofel está equivocado. 8 O senhor conhece seu pai e os homens dele; são guerreiros valentes. No momento, estão tão furiosos quanto uma ursa da qual roubaram os filhotes. E lembre-se de que seu pai é um soldado experiente; ele não passará a noite com o povo. 9 É provável que já esteja escondido em alguma cova ou caverna. Quando ele sair e atacar, e alguns de nossos soldados forem mortos, a notícia de que os homens de Absalão foram massacrados se espalhará. 10 Então, até os soldados mais destemidos, embora sejam corajosos como um leão, serão tomados de pavor. Afinal, todo o Israel sabe como seu pai é um guerreiro poderoso e como são valentes os homens que o acompanham.
11 “Recomendo que o senhor reúna todo o exército de Israel e convoque soldados desde Dã, ao norte, até Berseba, ao sul, tão numerosos quanto a areia da praia. Aconselho, também, que o senhor mesmo vá à frente das tropas. 12 Quando encontrarmos Davi, cairemos sobre ele como o orvalho cai sobre a terra. Nem ele nem nenhum de seus homens sobreviverão. 13 E, caso Davi consiga escapar para alguma cidade, o senhor terá todo o Israel sob seu comando. Levaremos cordas e arrastaremos os muros da cidade para o vale mais próximo, até que não reste uma pedrinha sequer”.
14 Então Absalão e todos os homens de Israel disseram: “O conselho de Husai é melhor que o de Aitofel”, pois o Senhor havia decidido frustrar o sensato conselho de Aitofel a fim de trazer desgraça sobre Absalão.
Husai avisa Davi
15 Husai contou aos sacerdotes Zadoque e Abiatar o que Aitofel tinha dito a Absalão e às autoridades de Israel e o que ele próprio havia aconselhado. 16 “Rápido!”, disse ele aos sacerdotes. “Encontrem Davi e insistam para que ele não passe esta noite nos pontos de travessia do Jordão,[a] mas que atravesse o rio e vá para o deserto. Do contrário, ele e todos que o acompanham morrerão.”
17 Jônatas e Aimaás haviam ficado em En-Rogel, para não serem vistos entrando e saindo da cidade. Tinham pedido que uma serva lhes trouxesse a mensagem que deviam transmitir ao rei Davi. 18 Contudo, um rapaz os viu em En-Rogel e avisou Absalão. Por isso, fugiram depressa para Baurim, onde um homem os escondeu dentro de um poço em seu quintal. 19 A esposa desse homem estendeu um grande pedaço de pano sobre o poço e em cima espalhou grãos de cereal para secar ao sol, para que ninguém suspeitasse que estivessem ali.
20 Os homens de Absalão chegaram e perguntaram à mulher: “Você viu Aimaás e Jônatas?”.
A mulher respondeu: “Estiveram aqui, mas atravessaram o riacho”. Os homens de Absalão os procuraram sem sucesso e voltaram para Jerusalém.
21 Jônatas e Aimaás saíram do poço e correram para onde o rei Davi estava. “Depressa!”, disseram ao rei. “Atravessem o Jordão ainda esta noite!” E lhe contaram que Aitofel havia aconselhado que ele fosse capturado e morto. 22 Então Davi e todos que o acompanhavam atravessaram o rio durante a noite e chegaram à outra margem antes do amanhecer.
23 Quando Aitofel viu que Absalão não havia seguido seu conselho, selou seu jumento, foi para sua cidade natal, pôs seus negócios em ordem e se enforcou. Assim morreu, e foi sepultado no túmulo da família.
24 Davi chegou logo a Maanaim. A essa altura, Absalão havia reunido todo o exército de Israel e conduzia as tropas até o outro lado do Jordão. 25 Absalão havia nomeado Amasa para comandar seu exército em lugar de Joabe. (Amasa era primo de Joabe. Seu pai era Jéter,[b] um ismaelita,[c] e sua mãe, Abigail, era filha de Naás, irmã de Zeruia, mãe de Joabe.) 26 Absalão e o exército israelita acamparam na terra de Gileade.
27 Quando Davi chegou a Maanaim, foi recebido por Sobi, filho de Naás, de Rabá dos amonitas, e por Maquir, filho de Amiel, de Lo-Debar, e por Barzilai, de Rogelim, em Gileade. 28 Trouxeram camas, vasilhas, tigelas, trigo e cevada, farinha e grãos tostados, feijão e lentilha, 29 mel, coalhada, ovelhas e queijo para Davi e os que o acompanhavam, pois disseram: “Vocês devem estar muito famintos, cansados e sedentos depois da longa caminhada pelo deserto”.

17 Disse mais Aitofel a Absalão: Deixa-me escolher doze mil homens, e me levantarei e seguirei após Davi esta noite. 2 E irei sobre ele, pois está cansado e fraco das mãos; e o espantarei, e fugirá todo o povo que está com ele; e, então, ferirei o rei só. 3 E farei tornar a ti todo o povo, pois o homem a quem tu buscas é como se tornassem todos; assim, todo o povo estará em paz. 4 E esta palavra pareceu boa aos olhos de Absalão, e aos olhos de todos os anciãos de Israel. 5 Disse, porém, Absalão: Chamai agora também a Husai, o arquita, e ouçamos também o que ele dirá. 6 E, chegando Husai a Absalão, lhe falou Absalão, dizendo: Desta maneira falou Aitofel: Faremos conforme à sua palavra? Se não, fala tu. 7 Então, disse Husai a Absalão: O conselho que Aitofel esta vez aconselhou não é bom. 8 Disse mais Husai: Bem conheces tu a teu pai e a seus homens, que são valorosos e que estão com o espírito amargurado, como a ursa no campo, roubada dos cachorros; também teu pai é homem de guerra, e não passará a noite com o povo. 9 Eis que agora estará escondido nalguma cova, ou em qualquer outro lugar; e será que, caindo no princípio alguns dentre eles, cada um que ouvir então dirá: Houve derrota no povo que segue Absalão. 10 Então, até o homem valente, cujo coração é como o coração de leão, sem dúvida desmaiará; porque todo o Israel sabe que teu pai é valoroso, e homens valentes, os que estão com ele. 11 Eu, porém, aconselho que, com toda a pressa, se ajunte a ti todo o Israel, desde Dã até Berseba, em multidão como a areia do mar, e que tu em pessoa vás à peleja. 12 Então, iremos a ele, em qualquer lugar que se achar, e facilmente viremos sobre ele, como o orvalho cai sobre a terra; e não ficará dele e de todos os homens que estão com ele nem ainda um só. 13 E, se ele se retirar para alguma cidade, todo o Israel trará cordas àquela cidade: e arrastá-la-emos até ao ribeiro, até que não se ache ali nem uma só pedrinha. 14 Então, disse Absalão e todos os homens de Israel: Melhor é o conselho de Husai, o arquita, do que o conselho de Aitofel (porém assim o Senhor o ordenara, para aniquilar o bom conselho de Aitofel, para que o Senhor trouxesse o mal sobre Absalão).
15 E disse Husai a Zadoque e a Abiatar, sacerdotes: Assim e assim aconselhou Aitofel a Absalão e aos anciãos de Israel; porém assim e assim aconselhei eu. 16 Agora, pois, enviai apressadamente, e avisai a Davi, dizendo: Não passes esta noite nas campinas do deserto, mas passa depressa à outra banda, para que o rei e todo o povo que com ele está não seja devorado. 17 Estavam, pois, Jônatas e Aimaás junto à fonte de Rogel, e foi uma criada, e lho disse, e eles foram, e disseram ao rei Davi, porque não podiam ser vistos entrar na cidade. 18 Mas viu-os, todavia, um moço, e avisou a Absalão; porém ambos logo partiram apressadamente, e entraram em casa de um homem, em Baurim, o qual tinha um poço no seu pátio, e para ali desceram. 19 E tomou a mulher a tampa, e a estendeu sobre a boca do poço, e espalhou grão descascado sobre ela; assim, nada se soube. 20 Chegando, pois, os servos de Absalão à mulher, àquela casa, disseram: Onde estão Aimaás e Jônatas? E a mulher lhes disse: Já passaram o vau das águas. E, havendo-os buscado, e não os achando, voltaram para Jerusalém. 21 E sucedeu que, depois que partiram, saíram do poço, e foram, e anunciaram a Davi; e disseram a Davi: Levantai-vos, e passai depressa as águas, porque assim aconselhou contra vós Aitofel. 22 Então, Davi e todo o povo que com ele estava se levantou, e passaram o Jordão: e já pela luz da manhã nem ainda faltava um só que não passasse o Jordão.
23 Vendo, pois, Aitofel que se não tinha seguido o seu conselho, albardou o jumento e levantou-se, e foi para sua casa e para a sua cidade, e pôs em ordem a sua casa, e se enforcou: e morreu, e foi sepultado na sepultura de seu pai.
24 E Davi veio a Maanaim; e Absalão passou o Jordão, ele e todo o homem de Israel com ele. 25 E Absalão constituiu a Amasa em lugar de Joabe sobre o arraial: e era Amasa filho de um homem cujo nome era Itra, o israelita, o qual entrara a Abigail, filha de Naás, irmã de Zeruia, mãe de Joabe. 26 Israel, pois, e Absalão acamparam na terra de Gileade.
A vitória do exército de Davi sobre o de Absalão
27 E sucedeu que, chegando Davi a Maanaim, Sobi, filho de Naás, de Rabá, dos filhos de Amom, e Maquir, filho de Amiel, de Lo-Debar, e Barzilai, o gileadita, de Rogelim, 28 tomaram camas, e bacias, e vasilhas de barro, e trigo, e cevada, e farinha, e grão torrado, e favas, e lentilhas, também torradas, 29 e mel, e manteiga, e ovelhas, e queijos de vacas, e os trouxeram a Davi e ao povo que com ele estava, para comerem, porque disseram: Este povo no deserto está faminto, e cansado, e sedento.

17 Moreover Achitophel said unto Avshalom, Let me now choose out shneym asar elef ish, and I will arise and pursue after Dovid halailah (this night);
2 And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak of hands, and will make him tremble with fear; and kol haAm that are with him shall flee; and I will strike HaMelech only;
3 When I return kol HaAm to you, all except the ish whom thou seekest, it is as if [kol HaAm] returned; so kol haAm shall be in shalom.
4 And the saying pleased Avshalom well, and kol Ziknei Yisroel.
5 Then said Avshalom, Call now Chushai the Archi also, and let us hear likewise from his peh (mouth).
6 And when Chushai was come to Avshalom, Avshalom spoke unto him, saying, Achitophel hath spoken after this manner; shall we do after his saying? If not; speak thou.
7 And Chushai said unto Avshalom, The etza (counsel) that Achitophel hath given is not tovah at this time.
8 For, said Chushai, thou knowest Avicha and his anashim, that they be Gibborim, and they be enraged in their nefesh, as a dov (bear) robbed of her cubs in the sadeh; and Avicha is ish milchamah, and will not spend the night with HaAm (the troops).
9 Hinei, he is hid now in one of the pits, or in some other makom; and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown at the outset, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a magefah (slaughter) among the people that follow Avshalom.
10 And he also that is chayil (valiant), whose lev is as the lev ha’aryeh (heart of a lion), shall utterly melt; for kol Yisroel knoweth that Avicha is a Gibbor, and they that be with him are Bnei Chayil (valiant men).
11 Therefore, I counsel that kol Yisroel be fully gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-Sheva, as the chol (sand) that is by the yam for multitude; and that thou thyself go into battle in person.
12 So shall we come upon him in some makom where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the tal (dew) falleth on the adamah; and of him and of kol ha’anashim that are with him there shall not be left so much as one.
13 Moreover, if he has withdrawn into a city, then shall kol Yisroel bring chavalim (ropes) to that city, and we will draw it into the ravine, until there be not one small stone found there.
14 And Avshalom and kol Ish Yisroel said, The etza (counsel) of Chushai the Arki is better than the etza of Achitophel. For Hashem had resolved to annul the etza of Achitophel, to the intent that Hashem might bring ra’ah upon Avshalom.
15 Then said Chushai unto Tzadok and to Evyatar (Abiathar) the kohanim, Thus and thus did Achitophel counsel Avshalom and the Ziknei Yisroel; and thus and thus have I counselled.
16 Now therefore send quickly, and tell Dovid, saying, Spend not halailah (this night) in the plains of the midbar, but speedily cross over; lest HaMelech be swallowed up, and kol haAm that are with him.
17 Now Yonatan and Achima’atz stayed by Ein-Rogel; for they dared not be seen to come into the Ir; and a shifchah went and told them; and they went and told Dovid HaMelech.
18 Nevertheless a na’ar saw them, and told Avshalom; but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a bais ish in Bachurim, which had a be’er (well) in his khatzer; to where they went down.
19 And the isha took and spread a masakh (covering, curtain) over the mouth of the be’er, and spread hulled grain thereon; and the thing was not known.
20 And when the avadim of Avshalom came to the bais to the isha, they said, Where is Achima’atz and Yonatan? And the isha said unto them, They are gone over the brook of mayim. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Yerushalayim.
21 And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they climbed up out of the be’er (well), and went and told Dovid HaMelech, and said unto Dovid, Arise, and cross quickly over the mayim; for thus hath Achitophel counselled against you.
22 Then Dovid arose, and kol haAm that were with him, and they crossed over Yarden; by the ohr haboker there lacked not one of them that was not gone over Yarden.
23 And when Achitophel saw that his etza (counsel, advice) was not followed, he saddled his chamor, and arose, and went home to his bais, to his town, and put his bais (household) in order, vayyekhanak (and he strangled, hanged himself), and died, and was buried in the kever aviv (tomb of his father).
24 Then Dovid came to Machanayim. And Avshalom passed over Yarden, he and all the Ish Yisroel with him.
25 And Avshalom appointed Amasa over the tzava (army) instead of Yoav; now Amasa was ben ish shmo Yitra a Yisroeli, that went in to Avigal Bat Nachash Achot Tzeruyah Em Yoav.
26 So Yisroel and Avshalom encamped in Eretz Gil‘ad.
27 And it came to pass, when Dovid was come to Machanayim, that Shovi Ben Nachash of Rabbah of the Bnei Ammon, and Machir Ben Ammiel of Lo-Devar, and Barzillai the Gileadi of Roglim,
28 Brought mishkav (bedding) and sappot (bowls) and earthen vessels, and chittim (wheat), and se’orim (barley), and kemakh (flour), and roasted grain, and pol (beans), and adashim (lentils), and roasted seeds,
29 And devash, and khemah (curds), and tzon, and cheeses of the herd, for Dovid, and for HaAm that were with him, to eat; for they said, HaAm are hungry, and weary, and tzameh (thirsty), in the midbar.

17 Ahithophel said to Absalom, “I would[a] choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David. 2 I would attack him while he is weary and weak.(A) I would strike him with terror, and then all the people with him will flee. I would strike down only the king(B) 3 and bring all the people back to you. The death of the man you seek will mean the return of all; all the people will be unharmed.” 4 This plan seemed good to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.
5 But Absalom said, “Summon also Hushai(C) the Arkite, so we can hear what he has to say as well.” 6 When Hushai came to him, Absalom said, “Ahithophel has given this advice. Should we do what he says? If not, give us your opinion.”
7 Hushai replied to Absalom, “The advice Ahithophel has given is not good this time. 8 You know your father and his men; they are fighters, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs.(D) Besides, your father is an experienced fighter;(E) he will not spend the night with the troops. 9 Even now, he is hidden in a cave or some other place.(F) If he should attack your troops first,[b] whoever hears about it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow Absalom.’ 10 Then even the bravest soldier, whose heart is like the heart of a lion,(G) will melt(H) with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a fighter and that those with him are brave.(I)
11 “So I advise you: Let all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba(J)—as numerous as the sand(K) on the seashore—be gathered to you, with you yourself leading them into battle. 12 Then we will attack him wherever he may be found, and we will fall on him as dew settles on the ground. Neither he nor any of his men will be left alive. 13 If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we will drag it down to the valley(L) until not so much as a pebble is left.”
14 Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice(M) of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.”(N) For the Lord had determined to frustrate(O) the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster(P) on Absalom.(Q)
15 Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, “Ahithophel has advised Absalom and the elders of Israel to do such and such, but I have advised them to do so and so. 16 Now send a message at once and tell David, ‘Do not spend the night at the fords in the wilderness;(R) cross over without fail, or the king and all the people with him will be swallowed up.(S)’”
17 Jonathan(T) and Ahimaaz were staying at En Rogel.(U) A female servant was to go and inform them, and they were to go and tell King David, for they could not risk being seen entering the city. 18 But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So the two of them left at once and went to the house of a man in Bahurim.(V) He had a well in his courtyard, and they climbed down into it. 19 His wife took a covering and spread it out over the opening of the well and scattered grain over it. No one knew anything about it.(W)
20 When Absalom’s men came to the woman(X) at the house, they asked, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?”
The woman answered them, “They crossed over the brook.”[c] The men searched but found no one, so they returned to Jerusalem.
21 After they had gone, the two climbed out of the well and went to inform King David. They said to him, “Set out and cross the river at once; Ahithophel has advised such and such against you.” 22 So David and all the people with him set out and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, no one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.
23 When Ahithophel saw that his advice(Y) had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order(Z) and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.
Absalom’s Death
24 David went to Mahanaim,(AA) and Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel. 25 Absalom had appointed Amasa(AB) over the army in place of Joab. Amasa was the son of Jether,[d](AC) an Ishmaelite[e] who had married Abigail,[f] the daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah the mother of Joab. 26 The Israelites and Absalom camped in the land of Gilead.
27 When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash(AD) from Rabbah(AE) of the Ammonites, and Makir(AF) son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and Barzillai(AG) the Gileadite(AH) from Rogelim 28 brought bedding and bowls and articles of pottery. They also brought wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans and lentils,[g] 29 honey and curds, sheep, and cheese from cows’ milk for David and his people to eat.(AI) For they said, “The people have become exhausted and hungry and thirsty in the wilderness.(AJ)”
