Davi e Ziba
16 Quando Davi tinha acabado de passar pelo alto do monte, Ziba, servo de Mefibosete, estava à sua espera. Tinha dois jumentos carregados com duzentos pães, cem bolos de passas,[a] cem frutas de verão e uma vasilha de couro cheia de vinho.
2 “Para que tudo isso?”, perguntou o rei.
Ziba respondeu: “Os jumentos são para a família do rei montar, e o pão e as frutas de verão são para os servos comerem. O vinho é para os que ficarem exaustos no deserto”.
3 “E onde está Mefibosete, neto de seu senhor Saul?”, perguntou o rei.
Ziba respondeu: “Ficou em Jerusalém, pois disse: ‘Hoje o povo de Israel me devolverá o reino de meu avô Saul’”.
4 Então o rei disse a Ziba: “Nesse caso, dou a você tudo que pertence a Mefibosete”.
“Humildemente me prostro”, respondeu Ziba. “Que o meu senhor, o rei, sempre se agrade de mim.”
Simei amaldiçoa Davi
5 Quando o rei Davi chegou a Baurim, um homem do povoado saiu ao seu encontro e começou a amaldiçoá-lo. Era Simei, filho de Gera, do mesmo clã da família de Saul. 6 Atirava pedras contra o rei, seus oficiais e os guerreiros que o cercavam. 7 “Saia daqui, assassino, bandido!”, gritava para Davi. 8 “O Senhor lhe está retribuindo por todo o sangue derramado no clã de Saul. Você roubou o trono, e agora o Senhor o entregou a seu filho Absalão. Finalmente está provando de seu próprio remédio, pois é assassino!”
9 Então Abisai, filho de Zeruia, disse: “Por que este cão morto amaldiçoa meu senhor, o rei? Dê a ordem, e eu cortarei a cabeça dele!”.
10 O rei, porém, disse: “Quem pediu a opinião de vocês, filhos de Zeruia? Se o Senhor mandou este homem me amaldiçoar, quem são vocês para questioná-lo?”.
11 Então Davi disse a Abisai e a todos os seus servos: “Meu próprio filho procura me matar. Não teria este parente de Saul[b] ainda mais motivos para fazer o mesmo? Deixem-no em paz. Que ele me amaldiçoe, pois foi o Senhor que o mandou. 12 Talvez o Senhor veja que tenho sido injustiçado[c] e me abençoe por causa dessas maldições de hoje”. 13 Assim, Davi e seus homens prosseguiram em seu caminho. Simei os seguia pela encosta de um monte próximo, amaldiçoando Davi e atirando pedras e terra contra ele.
14 O rei e todos que o acompanhavam chegaram exaustos ao rio Jordão[d] e, por isso, descansaram ali.
Aitofel aconselha Absalão
15 Nesse meio-tempo, Absalão e uma multidão de israelitas entraram em Jerusalém, acompanhados por Aitofel. 16 Quando Husai, o arquita, amigo de Davi, chegou à cidade, foi logo ao encontro de Absalão. “Viva o rei!”, exclamou. “Viva o rei!”
17 “É assim que você mostra lealdade a seu amigo Davi?”, perguntou-lhe Absalão. “Por que não está com ele?”
18 Husai respondeu: “Estou aqui porque pertenço àquele que é escolhido pelo Senhor e por todos os homens de Israel. 19 Além do mais, é natural que eu sirva ao filho de Davi. Assim como fui conselheiro de seu pai, agora serei seu conselheiro”.
20 Então Absalão se voltou para Aitofel e perguntou: “O que devo fazer agora?”.
21 Aitofel respondeu: “Tenha relações com as concubinas que seu pai deixou aqui para tomar conta do palácio. Então todo o Israel saberá que você insultou seu pai de tal modo que será impossível haver reconciliação; isso encorajará os que estão do seu lado”. 22 Então armaram uma tenda no terraço do palácio, e ali Absalão teve relações com as concubinas de seu pai à vista de todo o Israel.
23 Absalão seguiu os conselhos de Aitofel, como Davi tinha feito, pois as palavras de Aitofel pareciam sábias, como se fossem um conselho dado pelo próprio Deus.

16 And when Dovid was a little past the top of the hill, hinei, Tziva the na’ar of Mephivoshet met him, with a couple of chamorim saddled, and upon them 200 lechem, and 100 bunches of tzimmukim, and 100 kayitz, and a skin of yayin.
2 And HaMelech said unto Tziva, What meanest thou by these? And Tziva said, The chamorim are for the Bais HaMelech to ride on; and the lechem and kayitz for the ne’arim to eat; and the yayin, that such as be faint in the midbar may drink.
3 And HaMelech said, And where is the ben adoneicha [i.e., Sa’ul grandson Mephivoshet]? And Tziva said unto HaMelech, Hinei, he abideth at Yerushalayim; for he said, Today shall Bais Yisroel restore to me the mamlechut avi.
4 Then said HaMelech to Tziva, Hinei, thine are all that pertained unto Mephivoshet. Tziva said, I humbly prostrate myself. May I find chen in thy sight, adoni, O Melech.
5 When Dovid HaMelech came to Bachurim, hinei, from there came out an ish of the mishpakhat Bais Sha’ul; shmo Shimei Ben Gera; and he, cursing continuously, came.
6 And he cast avanim (stones) at Dovid, and at all the avadim of Dovid HaMelech; and at kol haAm and at all the Gibborim that were on his right and on his left.
7 And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come out, come out, thou ish hadamim and thou ish habeliyya’al;
8 Hashem hath returned upon thee all the dahm of the Bais Sha’ul, in whose place thou hast reigned; and Hashem hath delivered the meluchah (kingdom) into the yad Avshalom binecha; and, behold, thou art taken in thy ra’ah, because thou art an ish damim.
9 Then said Avishai Ben Tzeruyah unto HaMelech, Why should this kelev hamet (dead dog) curse adoni HaMelech? Let me go over, now and cut off his rosh.
10 And HaMelech said, What have I to do with you, ye Bnei Tzeruyah? So let him curse, because Hashem hath said unto him, Curse Dovid. Who shall then say, why hast thou done so?
11 And Dovid said to Avishai, and to all his avadim, Hinei, beni, which came forth from within me, seeketh my nefesh; how much more now may this Bin-Hayemini (Benjamite) do it? Let him alone, and let him curse; for Hashem hath bidden him.
12 It may be that Hashem will look on mine affliction, that Hashem will repay me tovah for his cursing this day.
13 And as Dovid and his anashim went by the derech, Shimei went along on the hillside opposite him, cursed as he went, threw avanim at him, and kicked up aphar.
14 And HaMelech, and kol HaAm that were with him, arrived weary, and refreshed themselves there [at the Yarden].
15 And Avshalom, and kol HaAm Ish Yisroel, came to Yerushalayim, and Achitophel with him.
16 And it came to pass, when Chushai the Archi, re’eh Dovid, was come unto Avshalom, that Chushai said unto Avshalom, Long live HaMelech, Long live HaMelech.
17 And Avshalom said to Chushai, Is this thy chesed (loyal loving-kindness) to thy re’a (friend)? Why wentest thou not with thy re’a (friend)?
18 Chushai said unto Avshalom, Lo; but whom Hashem, this people, and kol Ish Yisroel, choose, his will I be, and with him will I abide.
19 And again, whom should I serve? Should I not serve in the presence of bno? As I have served in the presence of Avicha, so will I be in thy presence.
20 Then said Avshalom to Achitophel, Give etza (counsel, advice, wisdom) among you what we shall do.
21 And Achitophel said unto Avshalom, Go in unto the pilagshim of Avicha, which he hath left to be shomer over the Bais (palace); and kol Yisroel shall hear that thou art a stench to Avicha; then shall the hands of all that are with thee be chazak (strong).
22 So they spread Avshalom an ohel upon the gag (roof); and Avshalom went in unto the pilagshim of Aviv in the sight of kol Yisroel.
23 And the etza (counsel) of Achitophel, which he counselled in those days, was as if an ish had inquired at the davar HaElohim; so was all the etza (counsel) of Achitophel both with Dovid and with Avshalom.

David and Ziba
16 When David had gone a short distance beyond the summit, there was Ziba,(A) the steward of Mephibosheth, waiting to meet him. He had a string of donkeys saddled and loaded with two hundred loaves of bread, a hundred cakes of raisins, a hundred cakes of figs and a skin of wine.(B)
2 The king asked Ziba, “Why have you brought these?”
Ziba answered, “The donkeys are for the king’s household to ride on, the bread and fruit are for the men to eat, and the wine is to refresh(C) those who become exhausted in the wilderness.”
3 The king then asked, “Where is your master’s grandson?”(D)
Ziba(E) said to him, “He is staying in Jerusalem, because he thinks, ‘Today the Israelites will restore to me my grandfather’s kingdom.’”
4 Then the king said to Ziba, “All that belonged to Mephibosheth(F) is now yours.”
“I humbly bow,” Ziba said. “May I find favor in your eyes, my lord the king.”
Shimei Curses David
5 As King David approached Bahurim,(G) a man from the same clan as Saul’s family came out from there. His name was Shimei(H) son of Gera, and he cursed(I) as he came out. 6 He pelted David and all the king’s officials with stones, though all the troops and the special guard were on David’s right and left. 7 As he cursed, Shimei said, “Get out, get out, you murderer, you scoundrel! 8 The Lord has repaid you for all the blood you shed in the household of Saul, in whose place you have reigned.(J) The Lord has given the kingdom into the hands of your son Absalom. You have come to ruin because you are a murderer!”(K)
9 Then Abishai(L) son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this dead dog(M) curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head.”(N)
10 But the king said, “What does this have to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah?(O) If he is cursing because the Lord said to him, ‘Curse David,’ who can ask, ‘Why do you do this?’”(P)
11 David then said to Abishai and all his officials, “My son,(Q) my own flesh and blood, is trying to kill me. How much more, then, this Benjamite! Leave him alone; let him curse, for the Lord has told him to.(R) 12 It may be that the Lord will look upon my misery(S) and restore to me his covenant blessing(T) instead of his curse today.(U)”
13 So David and his men continued along the road while Shimei was going along the hillside opposite him, cursing as he went and throwing stones at him and showering him with dirt. 14 The king and all the people with him arrived at their destination exhausted.(V) And there he refreshed himself.
The Advice of Ahithophel and Hushai
15 Meanwhile, Absalom(W) and all the men of Israel came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel(X) was with him. 16 Then Hushai(Y) the Arkite, David’s confidant, went to Absalom and said to him, “Long live the king! Long live the king!”
17 Absalom said to Hushai, “So this is the love you show your friend? If he’s your friend, why didn’t you go with him?”(Z)
18 Hushai said to Absalom, “No, the one chosen by the Lord, by these people, and by all the men of Israel—his I will be, and I will remain with him. 19 Furthermore, whom should I serve? Should I not serve the son? Just as I served your father, so I will serve you.”(AA)
20 Absalom said to Ahithophel, “Give us your advice. What should we do?”
21 Ahithophel answered, “Sleep with your father’s concubines whom he left to take care of the palace. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself obnoxious to your father, and the hands of everyone with you will be more resolute.” 22 So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.(AB)
23 Now in those days the advice(AC) Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God. That was how both David(AD) and Absalom regarded all of Ahithophel’s advice.

Mephibosheth’s Servant
16 When(A) David was a little past the top of the mountain, there was (B)Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth, who met him with a couple of saddled donkeys, and on them two hundred loaves of bread, one hundred clusters of raisins, one hundred summer fruits, and a skin of wine. 2 And the king said to Ziba, “What do you mean to do with these?”

3 Then the king said, “And where is your (D)master’s son?”
(E)And Ziba said to the king, “Indeed he is staying in Jerusalem, for he said, ‘Today the house of Israel will restore the kingdom of my father to me.’ ”
4 So the king said to Ziba, “Here, all that belongs to Mephibosheth is yours.”
And Ziba said, “I humbly bow before you, that I may find favor in your sight, my lord, O king!”
Shimei Curses David
5 Now when King David came to (F)Bahurim, there was a man from the family of the house of Saul, whose name was (G)Shimei the son of Gera, coming from there. He came out, cursing continuously as he came. 6 And he threw stones at David and at all the servants of King David. And all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. 7 Also Shimei said thus when he cursed: “Come out! Come out! You [a]bloodthirsty man, (H)you [b]rogue! 8 The Lord has (I)brought upon you all (J)the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned; and the Lord has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom your son. So now you are caught in your own evil, because you are a [c]bloodthirsty man!”
9 Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this (K)dead dog (L)curse my lord the king? Please, let me go over and take off his head!”
10 But the king said, (M)“What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? So let him curse, because (N)the Lord has said to him, ‘Curse David.’ (O)Who then shall say, ‘Why have you done so?’ ”
11 And David said to Abishai and all his servants, “See how (P)my son who (Q)came from my own body seeks my life. How much more now may this Benjamite? The Advice of Ahithophel
15 Meanwhile (T)Absalom and all the people, the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem; and Ahithophel was with him. 16 And so it was, when Hushai the Archite, (U)David’s friend, came to Absalom, that (V)Hushai said to Absalom, “Long live the king! Long live the king!”
17 So Absalom said to Hushai, “Is this your loyalty to your friend? (W)Why did you not go with your friend?”
18 And Hushai said to Absalom, “No, but whom the Lord and this people and all the men of Israel choose, his I will be, and with him I will remain. 19 Furthermore, (X)whom should I serve? Should I not serve in the presence of his son? As I have served in your father’s presence, so will I be in your presence.”
20 Then Absalom said to (Y)Ahithophel, “Give advice as to what we should do.”
21 And Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Go in to your father’s (Z)concubines, whom he has left to keep the house; and all Israel will hear that you (AA)are abhorred by your father. Then (AB)the hands of all who are with you will be strong.” 22 So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the top of the house, and Absalom went in to his father’s concubines (AC)in the sight of all Israel.
23 Now the advice of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if one had inquired at the oracle of God. So was all the advice of Ahithophel (AD)both with David and with Absalom.
