Absalom’s Treason
15 After this (A)it happened that Absalom (B)provided himself with chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him. 2 Now Absalom would rise early and stand beside the way to the gate. So it was, whenever anyone who had a (C)lawsuit[a] came to the king for a decision, that Absalom would call to him and say, “What city are you from?” And he would say, “Your servant is from such and such a tribe of Israel.” 3 Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your [b]case is good and right; but there is no [c]deputy of the king to hear you.” 4 Moreover Absalom would say, (D)“Oh, that I were made judge in the land, and everyone who has any suit or cause would come to me; then I would give him justice.” 5 And so it was, whenever anyone came near to bow down to him, that he would put out his hand and take him and (E)kiss him. 6 In this manner Absalom acted toward all Israel who came to the king for judgment. (F)So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
7 Now it came to pass (G)after [d]forty years that Absalom said to the king, “Please, let me go to (H)Hebron and pay the vow which I made to the Lord. 8 (I)For your servant (J)took a vow (K)while I dwelt at Geshur in Syria, saying, ‘If the Lord indeed brings me back to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.’ ”
9 And the king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron.
10 Then Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, ‘Absalom (L)reigns in Hebron!’ ” 11 And with Absalom went two hundred men (M)invited from Jerusalem, and they (N)went along innocently and did not know anything. 12 Then Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, (O)David’s counselor, from his city—from (P)Giloh—while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy grew strong, for the people with Absalom (Q)continually increased in number.
David Escapes from Jerusalem
13 Now a messenger came to David, saying, (R)“The hearts of the men of Israel are [e]with Absalom.”
14 So David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let us (S)flee, or we shall not escape from Absalom. Make haste to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly and bring disaster upon us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”
15 And the king’s servants said to the king, “We are your servants, ready to do whatever my lord the king commands.” 16 Then (T)the king went out with all his household after him. But the king left (U)ten women, concubines, to keep the house. 17 And the king went out with all the people after him, and stopped at the outskirts. 18 Then all his servants passed [f]before him; (V)and all the Cherethites, all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, (W)six hundred men who had followed him from Gath, passed before the king.
19 Then the king said to (X)Ittai the Gittite, “Why are you also going with us? Return and remain with the king. For you are a foreigner and also an exile from your own place. 20 In fact, you came only yesterday. Should I make you wander up and down with us today, since I go (Y)I know not where? Return, and take your brethren back. Mercy and truth be with you.”
21 But Ittai answered the king and said, (Z)“As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in whatever place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also your servant will be.”
22 So David said to Ittai, “Go, and cross over.” Then Ittai the Gittite and all his men and all the little ones who were with him crossed over. 23 And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people crossed over. The king himself also crossed over the Brook Kidron, and all the people crossed over toward the way of the (AA)wilderness.
24 There was (AB)Zadok also, and all the Levites with him, bearing the (AC)ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God, and (AD)Abiathar went up until all the people had finished crossing over from the city. 25 Then the king said to Zadok, “Carry the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the Lord, He (AE)will bring me back and show me both it and (AF)His dwelling place. 26 But if He says thus: ‘I have no (AG)delight in you,’ here I am, (AH)let Him do to me as seems good to Him.” 27 The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Are you not a (AI)seer?[g] Return to the city in peace, and (AJ)your two sons with you, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. 28 See, (AK)I will wait in the plains of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.” 29 Therefore Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God back to Jerusalem. And they remained there.
30 So David went up by the Ascent of the Mount of Olives, and wept as he went up; and he (AL)had his head covered and went (AM)barefoot. And all the people who were with him (AN)covered their heads and went up, (AO)weeping as they went up. 31 Then someone told David, saying, (AP)“Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” And David said, “O Lord, I pray, (AQ)turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness!”
32 Now it happened when David had come to the top of the mountain, where he worshiped God—there was Hushai the (AR)Archite coming to meet him (AS)with his robe torn and dust on his head. 33 David said to him, “If you go on with me, then you will become (AT)a burden to me. 34 But if you return to the city, and say to Absalom, (AU)‘I will be your servant, O king; as I was your father’s servant previously, so I will now also be your servant,’ then you may defeat the counsel of Ahithophel for me. 35 And do you not have Zadok and Abiathar the priests with you there? Therefore it will be that whatever you hear from the king’s house, you shall tell to (AV)Zadok and Abiathar the priests. 36 Indeed they have there (AW)with them their two sons, Ahimaaz, Zadok’s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar’s son; and by them you shall send me everything you hear.”
37 So Hushai, (AX)David’s friend, went into the city. (AY)And Absalom came into Jerusalem.

Absalón se subleva contra David
15 Algún tiempo después, Absalón se hizo de carros de combate y de caballos, y de cincuenta hombres que marchaban al frente de él. 2 Todas las mañanas se levantaba y se ponía a un lado del camino, junto a la puerta de la ciudad, y a quien acudía al rey para resolver un pleito o para pedir justicia, lo llamaba y le preguntaba: «¿Tú, de qué ciudad vienes?» Si el interrogado respondía: «Tu siervo es de una de las tribus de Israel», 3 Absalón le decía: «Tus razones son buenas y justas, pero de parte del rey no tienes quién te oiga.» 4 Incluso añadía: «¡Cómo quisiera ser el juez de este país! ¡Así, los que tuvieran algún pleito o negocio vendrían a verme, y yo les haría justicia!» 5 Y si alguien se acercaba y se inclinaba ante él, Absalón le tendía los brazos y lo besaba. 6 Esto lo hacía con todos los israelitas que acudían al rey para que les hiciera justicia, y así se iba ganando la buena voluntad del pueblo de Israel.
7 Así pasaron cuatro años, y un día Absalón le dijo al rey:
«Ruego a Su Majestad me permita ir a Hebrón. Debo cumplir con mis votos al Señor. 8 Cuando este siervo de Su Majestad aún vivía en Gesur, en Siria, le hizo esta promesa al Señor: “Si tú, Señor, me permites volver a Jerusalén, yo te serviré.”»
9 El rey le dijo:
«Puedes irte en paz.»
Entonces Absalón se puso en camino hacia Hebrón, 10 pero envió mensajeros por todas las tribus de Israel para que dijeran: «Cuando escuchen el sonido de la trompeta, anuncien que Absalón reina en Hebrón.» 11 Además, Absalón invitó a doscientos hombres de Jerusalén para que lo acompañaran, los cuales fueron inocentemente, sin saber cuáles eran sus intenciones. 12 Y mientras Absalón presentaba sus ofrendas al Señor, mando llamar a Ajitofel, que era consejero del rey y vivía en la ciudad de Gilo. Con esto la conspiración ganó fuerza y los seguidores de Absalón aumentaron.
13 Entonces un mensajero fue a decirle a David que Absalón se estaba ganando la buena voluntad del pueblo de Israel y que muchos lo seguían, 14 y David ordenó a todos sus servidores:
“«¡De prisa! ¡Vayámonos de aquí, o no podremos escapar de Absalón! ¡Si él llega antes, nos alcanzará y acabará con nosotros, y destruirá la ciudad a filo de espada!»
15 Sus siervos le respondieron:
«Su Majestad puede contar con estos siervos suyos. Haremos todo lo que Su Majestad decida hacer.»
16 El rey David salió de Jerusalén, seguido de toda su familia, pero dejo a diez de sus concubinas para que cuidaran del palacio. 17 Una vez que salió, él y todos sus seguidores se detuvieron en un lugar alejado. 18 Todos sus hombres fieles, incluidos los cretenses y peleteos, desfilaron a su lado; la vanguardia la formaban los seiscientos geteos que habían venido caminando desde Gat.
19 El rey David llamó a Itay el gatita, y le preguntó:
«¿Y tú por qué vienes con nosotros? Regresa a Jerusalén, y quédate con el rey, pues eres extranjero y también has sido desterrado de tu país. 20 Apenas llegaste ayer, así que no puedo pedirte que nos acompañes. Yo tengo que ir a donde pueda, pero tú, regresa, y haz que tus hermanos también regresen. Que el Señor te muestre su amor constante y su fidelidad.»
21 Pero Itay le respondió:
«Juro por el Señor y por Su Majestad que, sea para vida o para muerte, este siervo estará dondequiera que Su Majestad esté.»
22 Entonces David le dijo:
«Adelante, pues. Ven conmigo.»
Así fue como Itay el gatita, y todos sus hombres y su familia, siguieron al rey. 23 Todo el pueblo lloraba amargamente, y junto con el rey cruzaron el torrente de Cedrón y tomaron el camino que lleva al desierto. 24 Entre los que huían estaban el sacerdote Sadoc y los levitas que llevaban el arca del pacto de Dios. Mientras todo el pueblo salía de la ciudad, ellos descansaron el arca, y luego los siguió Sadoc. 25 Cuando el rey vio esto, le dijo a Sadoc:
«Lleva el arca de Dios de regreso a la ciudad. Si el Señor se digna verme con buenos ojos, me permitirá volver a ver el arca y su tabernáculo. 26 Pero si él me dice que ya no soy de su agrado, entonces que haga de mí lo que mejor le parezca.»
27 Además, el rey le dijo al sacerdote:
«Tú, Sadoc, eres vidente. Así que regresa en paz a la ciudad, y llévate a tu hijo Ajimaz y a Jonatán, el hijo de Abiatar. 28 Yo me detendré en los vados del desierto,(A) hasta que reciba noticias de ustedes.»
29 Entonces Sadoc y Abiatar se llevaron el arca de Dios de vuelta a la ciudad, y ellos también se quedaron allá. 30 David, por su parte, subió por la cuesta de los olivos. Iba llorando, con los pies descalzos y la cabeza cubierta, y todos sus hombres fieles subieron con él, también llorando y con la cabeza cubierta. 31 Pero cuando David se enteró de que Ajitofel estaba entre los conspiradores, dijo: «Señor, ¡haz que Ajitofel se equivoque cada vez que aconseje a Absalón!»
32 Cuando David llegó a la cima del monte para adorar a Dios, le salió al encuentro Jusay el arquita, que iba con la ropa hecha girones y con tierra sobre la cabeza. 33 Y David le dijo:
«Si vienes conmigo, vas a serme una carga. 34 Pero si regresas a la ciudad y te pones a las órdenes de Absalón, y le aseguras que lo servirás con el mismo fervor que me has servido a mí, entonces podrás anular los consejos de Ajitofel. 35 Recuerda que allá están los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar; a ellos les puedes decir todo lo que oigas en la casa del rey. 36 Con ellos también están Ajimaz, el hijo de Sadoc, y Jonatán, el hijo de Abiatar; con ellos puedes mandar a decirme todo lo que llegue a tus oídos.»
37 Así fue como Jusay, que era amigo de David, se fue a la ciudad, cuando Absalón entró en Jerusalén.

15 ACONTECIO después de esto, que Absalom se hizo de carros y caballos, y cincuenta que corriesen delante de él.
2 Y levantábase Absalom de mañana, y poníase á un lado del camino de la puerta; y á cualquiera que tenía pleito y venía al rey á juicio, Absalom le llamaba á sí, y decíale: ¿De qué ciudad eres? Y él respondía: Tu siervo es de una de las tribus de Israel.
3 Entonces Absalom le decía: Mira, tus palabras son buenas y justas: mas no tienes quien te oiga por el rey.
4 Y decía Absalom: Quién me pusiera por juez en la tierra, para que viniesen á mí todos los que tienen pleito ó negocio, que yo les haría justicia!
5 Y acontecía que, cuando alguno se llegaba para inclinarse á él, él extendía su mano, y lo tomaba, y lo besaba.
6 Y de esta manera hacía con todo Israel que venía al rey á juicio: y así robaba Absalom el corazón de los de Israel.
7 Y al cabo de cuarenta años aconteció que Absalom dijo al rey: Yo te ruego me permitas que vaya á Hebrón, á pagar mi voto que he prometido á Jehová:
8 Porque tu siervo hizo voto cuando estaba en Gessur en Siria, diciendo: Si Jehová me volviere á Jerusalem, yo serviré á Jehová.
9 Y el rey dijo: Ve en paz. Y él se levantó, y se fué á Hebrón.
10 Empero envió Absalom espías por todas las tribus de Israel, diciendo: Cuando oyereis el sonido de la trompeta, diréis: Absalom reina en Hebrón.
11 Y fueron con Absalom doscientos hombres de Jerusalem por él convidados, los cuales iban en su sencillez, sin saber nada.
12 También envió Absalom por Achitophel Gilonita, del consejo de David, á Gilo su ciudad, mientras hacía sus sacrificios. Y la conjuración vino á ser grande, pues se iba aumentando el pueblo con Absalom.
13 Y vino el aviso á David, diciendo: El corazón de todo Israel va tras Absalom.
14 Entonces David dijo á todos sus siervos que estaban con él en Jerusalem: Levantaos, y huyamos, porque no podremos escapar delante de Absalom; daos priesa á partir, no sea que apresurándose él nos alcance, y arroje el mal sobre nosotros, y hiera la ciudad á filo de espada.
15 Y los siervos del rey dijeron al rey: He aquí, tus siervos están prestos á todo lo que nuestro señor el rey eligiere.
16 El rey entonces salió, con toda su familia en pos de él. Y dejó el rey diez mujeres concubinas para que guardasen la casa.
17 Salió pues el rey con todo el pueblo que le seguía, y paráronse en un lugar distante.
18 Y todos sus siervos pasaban á su lado, con todos los Ceretheos y Peletheos; y todos los Getheos, seiscientos hombres que habían venido á pie desde Gath, iban delante del rey.
19 Y dijo el rey á Ittai Getheo: ¿Para qué vienes tú también con nosotros? vuélvete y quédate con el rey; porque tú eres extranjero, y desterrado también de tu lugar.
20 ¿Ayer viniste, y téngote de hacer hoy que mudes lugar para ir con nosotros? Yo voy como voy: tú vuélvete, y haz volver á tus hermanos: en ti haya misericordia y verdad.
21 Y respondió Ittai al rey, diciendo: Vive Dios, y vive mi señor el rey, que, ó para muerte ó para vida, donde mi señor el rey estuviere, allí estará también tu siervo.
22 Entonces David dijo á Ittai: Ven pues, y pasa. Y pasó Ittai Getheo, y todos sus hombres, y toda su familia.
23 Y todo el país lloró en alta voz; pasó luego toda la gente el torrente de Cedrón; asimismo pasó el rey, y todo el pueblo pasó, al camino que va al desierto.
24 Y he aquí, también iba Sadoc, y con él todos los Levitas que llevaban el arca del pacto de Dios; y asentaron el arca del pacto de Dios. Y subió Abiathar después que hubo acabado de salir de la ciudad todo el pueblo.
25 Pero dijo el rey á Sadoc: Vuelve el arca de Dios á la ciudad; que si yo hallare gracia en los ojos de Jehová, él me volverá, y me hará ver á ella y á su tabernáculo:
26 Y si dijere: No me agradas: aquí estoy, haga de mí lo que bien le pareciere.
27 Dijo aún el rey á Sadoc sacerdote: ¿No eres tú el vidente? Vuélvete en paz á la ciudad; y con vosotros vuestros dos hijos, tu hijo Ahimaas, y Jonathán hijo de Abiathar.
28 Mirad, yo me detendré en los campos del desierto, hasta que venga respuesta de vosotros que me dé aviso.
29 Entonces Sadoc y Abiathar volvieron el arca de Dios á Jerusalem; y estuviéronse allá.
30 Y David subió la cuesta de las olivas; y subió la llorando, llevando la cabeza cubierta, y los pies descalzos. También todo el pueblo que tenía consigo cubrió cada uno su cabeza, y subieron llorando así como subían.
31 Y dieron aviso á David, diciendo: Achitophel está entre los que conspiraron con Absalom. Entonces dijo David: Entontece ahora, oh Jehová, el consejo de Achitophel.
32 Y como David llegó á la cumbre del monte para adorar allí á Dios, he aquí Husai Arachîta que le salió al encuentro, trayendo rota su ropa, y tierra sobre su cabeza.
33 Y díjole David: Si pasares conmigo, serme has de carga;
34 Mas si volvieres á la ciudad, y dijeres á Absalom: Rey, yo seré tu siervo; como hasta aquí he sido siervo de tu padre, así seré ahora siervo tuyo, entonces tú me disiparás el consejo de Achitophel.
35 ¿No estarán allí contigo Sadoc y Abiathar sacerdotes? Por tanto, todo lo que oyeres en la casa del rey, darás aviso de ello á Sadoc y á Abiathar sacerdotes.
36 Y he aquí que están con ellos sus dos hijos, Ahimaas el de Sadoc, y Jonathán el de Abiathar: por mano de ellos me enviaréis aviso de todo lo que oyereis.
37 Así se vino Husai amigo de David á la ciudad; y Absalom entró en Jerusalem.

15 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.
2 And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.
3 And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.
4 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!
5 And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.
6 And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
7 And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the Lord, in Hebron.
8 For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the Lord shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.
9 And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron.
10 But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron.
11 And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not any thing.
12 And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.
13 And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.
14 And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.
15 And the king's servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.
16 And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house.
17 And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and tarried in a place that was far off.
18 And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.
19 Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile.
20 Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.
21 And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the Lord liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.
22 And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.
23 And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.
24 And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.
25 And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the Lord, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation:
26 But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.
27 The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art not thou a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.
28 See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me.
29 Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried there.
30 And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.
31 And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O Lord, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.
32 And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head:
33 Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me:
34 But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father's servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.
35 And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king's house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.
36 Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok's son, and Jonathan Abiathar's son; and by them ye shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear.
37 So Hushai David's friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.
