Răscoala lui Absalom
15 După(A) aceea, Absalom şi-a pregătit care şi cai şi cincizeci de oameni care(B) alergau înaintea lui. 2 Se scula dis-de-dimineaţă şi stătea la marginea drumului la poartă. Şi ori de câte ori avea cineva vreo neînţelegere şi se ducea la împărat la judecată, Absalom îl chema şi zicea: „Din ce cetate eşti?” După ce-i răspundea: „Sunt din cutare seminţie a lui Israel”, 3 Absalom îi zicea: „Iată, pricina ta este bună şi dreaptă, dar nimeni din partea împăratului nu te va asculta.” 4 Absalom zicea: „De(C) m-ar pune pe mine judecător în ţară! Orice om care ar avea o neînţelegere şi o judecată ar veni la mine, şi i-aş face dreptate.” 5 Şi, când se apropia cineva să se închine înaintea lui, el îi întindea mâna, îl apuca şi-l săruta. 6 Absalom se purta aşa cu toţi aceia din Israel care se duceau la împărat să ceară dreptate. Şi Absalom câştiga(D) inima oamenilor lui Israel. 7 După trecere de patruzeci[a] de ani, Absalom a zis împăratului: „Dă-mi voie să mă duc la Hebron să împlinesc o juruinţă pe care am făcut-o Domnului. 8 Căci robul(E) tău a făcut o juruinţă(F), când(G) locuiam la Gheşur, în Siria, şi am zis: ‘Dacă mă va aduce Domnul înapoi la Ierusalim, voi da cinste Domnului.’ ” 9 Împăratul i-a zis: „Du-te în pace.” Absalom s-a sculat şi a plecat la Hebron. 10 Absalom a trimis iscoade în toate seminţiile lui Israel să spună: „Când veţi auzi sunetul trâmbiţei, să ziceţi: ‘Absalom s-a făcut împărat la Hebron!’ ” 11 Două sute de oameni din Ierusalim, care fuseseră poftiţi(H), au însoţit pe Absalom, şi l-au însoţit în prostia(I) lor fără să ştie nimic. 12 Pe când aducea Absalom jertfele, a trimis în cetatea Ghilo după Ahitofel Ghilonitul(J), sfetnicul(K) lui David. Uneltirea căpăta putere şi poporul se îndrepta în număr tot mai mare(L) de partea lui Absalom.
Fuga lui David
13 Cineva a venit şi a dat de ştire lui David şi a zis: „Inima(M) oamenilor lui Israel s-a întors spre Absalom.” 14 Şi David a zis tuturor slujitorilor lui care erau cu el la Ierusalim: „Sculaţi-vă să fugim(N), căci nu vom scăpa dinaintea lui Absalom. Grăbiţi-vă de plecare, altfel, nu va întârzia să ne ajungă şi va arunca nenorocirea peste noi şi va trece cetatea prin ascuţişul sabiei.” 15 Slujitorii împăratului i-au zis: „Slujitorii tăi vor face tot ce va voi domnul nostru, împăratul.” 16 Împăratul(O) a ieşit, şi toată casa lui mergea după el, şi a lăsat zece(P) ţiitoare pentru paza casei. 17 Împăratul a ieşit astfel şi tot poporul îl urma. Şi s-au oprit la cea din urmă casă. 18 Toţi slujitorii lui, toţi cheretiţii(Q) şi toţi peletiţii au trecut alături de el şi toţi gatiţii, în număr de şase sute de oameni, veniţi din Gat după el, au trecut înaintea împăratului. 19 Împăratul a zis lui Itai(R) din Gat: „Pentru ce să vii şi tu cu noi? Întoarce-te şi rămâi cu împăratul, căci eşti străin şi ai fost luat chiar din ţara ta. 20 De ieri ai venit, şi azi să te fac să rătăceşti cu noi încoace şi încolo, când nici eu însumi nu ştiu unde(S) mă duc! Întoarce-te şi ia şi pe fraţii tăi cu tine. Domnul să se poarte cu tine cu bunătate şi credincioşie!” 21 Itai a răspuns împăratului şi a zis: „Viu(T) este Domnul şi viu este domnul meu, împăratul, că în locul unde va fi domnul meu, împăratul, fie ca să moară, fie ca să trăiască, acolo va fi şi robul tău.” 22 David a zis atunci lui Itai: „Du-te şi treci!” Şi Itai din Gat a trecut înainte, cu toţi oamenii lui şi toţi copiii care erau cu el. 23 Tot ţinutul plângea şi scotea ţipete mari la trecerea întregului popor. Împăratul a trecut apoi şi el pârâul Chedron şi tot poporul a apucat pe drumul care duce în(U) pustie. 24 Ţadoc era şi el acolo şi, cu el, toţi leviţii, ducând(V) chivotul legământului lui Dumnezeu, şi au aşezat jos chivotul lui Dumnezeu, şi Abiatar se suia, în timp ce tot poporul isprăvea de ieşit din cetate. 25 Împăratul a zis lui Ţadoc: „Du chivotul lui Dumnezeu înapoi în cetate. Dacă voi căpăta trecere înaintea Domnului, mă va aduce înapoi(W) şi mă va face să văd chivotul şi locaşul lui. 26 Dar dacă va zice: ‘Nu-mi place(X) de tine’, iată-mă, să facă ce va crede cu(Y) mine.” 27 Împăratul a mai zis preotului Ţadoc: „Înţelegi? Întoarce-te(Z) în pace în cetate, cu fiul tău Ahimaaţ şi cu Ionatan, fiul lui Abiatar, cei doi fii(AA) ai voştri. 28 Vedeţi, voi aştepta(AB) în câmpiile pustiei până ce-mi vor veni veşti din partea voastră.” 29 Astfel, Ţadoc şi Abiatar au dus înapoi chivotul lui Dumnezeu la Ierusalim şi au rămas acolo. 30 David a suit dealul măslinilor. Suia plângând şi cu capul(AC) acoperit şi mergea cu picioarele goale(AD), şi toţi cei ce erau cu el şi-au acoperit(AE) şi ei capul şi suiau plângând(AF). 31 Au venit şi au spus lui David: „Ahitofel(AG) este împreună cu Absalom printre uneltitori.” Şi David a zis: „Doamne, nimiceşte(AH) sfaturile lui Ahitofel!” 32 Când a ajuns David pe vârf, unde s-a închinat înaintea lui Dumnezeu, iată că Huşai, Architul, a venit înaintea lui, cu haina sfâşiată(AI) şi capul acoperit cu ţărână. 33 David i-a zis: „Dacă vei veni cu mine, îmi vei fi o(AJ) povară. 34 Dimpotrivă, vei nimici pentru mine sfaturile lui Ahitofel dacă te vei întoarce în cetate şi vei zice lui Absalom: ‘Împărate, eu voi fi robul(AK) tău; odinioară am fost robul tatălui tău, dar acum sunt robul tău.’ 35 Preoţii Ţadoc şi Abiatar nu vor fi acolo cu tine? Tot ce vei afla din casa împăratului spune(AL) preoţilor Ţadoc şi Abiatar. 36 Şi fiindcă ei au acolo la(AM) ei pe cei doi fii ai lor, pe Ahimaaţ, fiul lui Ţadoc, şi pe Ionatan, fiul lui Abiatar, prin ei îmi veţi trimite tot ce veţi afla.” 37 Huşai, prietenul(AN) lui David, s-a întors dar în cetate. 7 După o perioadă de patru ani[a], Absalom i-a zis regelui:
– Dă-mi voie, te rog, să merg la Hebron ca să împlinesc un jurământ pe care I l-am făcut Domnului 8 căci, pe când se afla în Aram, la Gheşur, slujitorul tău a făcut un jurământ spunând: „Dacă Domnul mă va aduce înapoi, la Ierusalim, Îi voi sluji[b] Domnului!“
9 – Mergi în pace, i-a răspuns regele.
Atunci Absalom a plecat îndată la Hebron. 10 De acolo Absalom a trimis mesageri la toate seminţiile lui Israel să le spună: „Atunci când veţi auzi sunetul cornului, să ziceţi: «Absalom s-a întronat la Hebron!»“ 11 Două sute de oameni din Ierusalim îl însoţeau pe Absalom, fiind invitaţii acestuia. În naivitatea lor, ei îl însoţeau fără să bănuiască nimic. 12 În timp ce aducea jertfele, Absalom a trimis în cetatea Ghilo după ghilonitul Ahitofel, sfetnicul lui David. Uneltirea căpăta putere şi tot mai mulţi din popor treceau de partea lui Absalom.
Fuga lui David
13 Cineva a venit şi i-a zis lui David:
– Israeliţii au trecut de partea lui Absalom.
14 Atunci David le-a zis tuturor slujitorilor săi:
– Să fugim repede! Altfel nu vom scăpa de Absalom! Să plecăm în grabă ca nu cumva să fie mai iute decât noi şi să ne ajungă. Pentru că astfel va aduce nenorocirea asupra noastră şi va trece cetatea prin ascuţişul sabiei.
15 – Slujitorii tăi sunt gata să facă tot ceea ce va hotărî stăpânul nostru, regele, i-au răspuns slujitorii.
16 Astfel, regele a plecat urmat fiind de întreaga sa familie; a lăsat totuşi zece ţiitoare ca să îngrijească de palat. 17 Regele a plecat împreună cu toţi cei care-l urmau şi s-au oprit într-un loc, la o oarecare distanţă. 18 Toţi slujitorii săi au trecut pe dinaintea lui: toţi cheretiţii, toţi peletiţii[c] şi toţi cei şase sute de ghitiţi care-l însoţiseră din Gat. 19 Regele i-a zis atunci ghititului Itai:
– Tu de ce vii cu noi? Întoarce-te şi rămâi cu regele Absalom, căci tu eşti un străin şi ai fost alungat din ţara ta. 20 Nu de mult timp ai venit şi acum să fac din tine un hoinar asemeni nouă, care nu ştim încotro vom merge!? Nu! Întoarce-te împreună cu oamenii tăi şi fie ca bunătatea şi credincioşia să te însoţească!
21 – Viu este Domnul, i-a răspuns Itai, şi viu este stăpânul meu, regele, că acolo unde se va afla stăpânul meu, regele, fie că va însemna moarte, fie viaţă, acolo se va afla şi slujitorul tău.
22 – Bine, atunci vino şi treci înainte! i-a răspuns regele.
Astfel, şi ghititul Itai, împreună cu toţi oamenii şi toţi copiii care erau cu el, au trecut înainte. 23 Toţi oamenii din acel ţinut plângeau în hohote, în timp ce treceau toţi acei oameni. Regele a trecut şi el uedul[d] Chidron şi toţi cei care-l însoţeau s-au îndreptat spre pustie. 24 Se afla acolo şi Ţadok, împreună cu toţi leviţii, ducând Chivotul Legământului cu Dumnezeu. Leviţii au aşezat Chivotul lui Dumnezeu jos, iar Abiatar a adus jertfe până când au ieşit toţi din cetate. 25 După aceea, regele i-a zis lui Ţadok: „Du Chivotul lui Dumnezeu înapoi, în cetate. Dacă voi găsi bunăvoinţă la Domnul, atunci El mă va aduce înapoi şi mă va lăsa să revăd Chivotul şi locuinţa lui. 26 Dacă însă va spune: «Nu Îmi eşti plăcut!», atunci sunt pregătit ca El să facă cu mine ce va crede de cuviinţă.“ 27 „Oare nu eşti tu un văzător? l-a întrebat apoi regele. Întoarceţi-vă în pace în cetate atât tu şi fiul tău Ahimaaţ, cât şi Abiatar cu fiul său Ionatan. 28 Eu voi aştepta la vadurile pustiei până voi primi veşti de la voi.“
29 Aşadar, Ţadok şi Abiatar au dus Chivotul lui Dumnezeu înapoi, la Ierusalim şi au rămas acolo. 30 David urca Muntele Măslinilor, plângând, cu capul acoperit şi desculţ. Toţi cei care erau cu el şi-au acoperit capetele şi urcau şi ei, plângând. 31 David a fost înştiinţat că Ahitofel se află printre trădători, de partea lui Absalom. Atunci David a zis: „Te rog, Doamne, fă ca Ahitofel să-i dea sfaturi proaste lui Absalom!“ 32 Când a ajuns în vârf, în locul unde oamenii obişnuiesc să I se închine lui Dumnezeu, architul Huşai îl aştepta acolo cu tunica sfâşiată şi cu pământ pe cap. 33 David i-a zis: „Dacă vii cu mine, vei fi doar o povară pentru mine. 34 Dacă însă te vei întoarce în cetate şi-i vei spune lui Absalom: «Slujitorul tău voi fi, o, rege. Orice vei auzi vorbindu-se în palatul regelui să le spui lor. 36 Se mai află cu ei, acolo, şi fiii lor: Ahimaaţ, fiul lui Ţadok, şi Ionatan, fiul lui Abiatar. 37 Huşai, prietenul lui David, a intrat în Ierusalim chiar atunci când Absalom intra şi el în cetate.

Absalom’s Conspiracy
15 In the course of time,(A) Absalom provided himself with a chariot(B) and horses and with fifty men to run ahead of him. 2 He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to the city gate.(C) Whenever anyone came with a complaint to be placed before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out to him, “What town are you from?” He would answer, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.” 3 Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your claims are valid and proper, but there is no representative of the king to hear you.”(D) 4 And Absalom would add, “If only I were appointed judge in the land!(E) Then everyone who has a complaint or case could come to me and I would see that they receive justice.”
5 Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him. 6 Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts(F) of the people of Israel.
7 At the end of four[a] years, Absalom said to the king, “Let me go to Hebron and fulfill a vow I made to the Lord. 8 While your servant was living at Geshur(G) in Aram, I made this vow:(H) ‘If the Lord takes me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the Lord in Hebron.[b]’”
9 The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he went to Hebron.
10 Then Absalom sent secret messengers throughout the tribes of Israel to say, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpets,(I) then say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron.’” 11 Two hundred men from Jerusalem had accompanied Absalom. They had been invited as guests and went quite innocently, knowing nothing about the matter. 12 While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel(J) the Gilonite, David’s counselor,(K) to come from Giloh,(L) his hometown. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept on increasing.(M)
David Flees
13 A messenger came and told David, “The hearts of the people of Israel are with Absalom.”
14 Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, “Come! We must flee,(N) or none of us will escape from Absalom.(O) We must leave immediately, or he will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin on us and put the city to the sword.”
15 The king’s officials answered him, “Your servants are ready to do whatever our lord the king chooses.”
16 The king set out, with his entire household following him; but he left ten concubines(P) to take care of the palace. 17 So the king set out, with all the people following him, and they halted at the edge of the city. 18 All his men marched past him, along with all the Kerethites(Q) and Pelethites; and all the six hundred Gittites who had accompanied him from Gath marched before the king.
19 The king said to Ittai(R) the Gittite, “Why should you come along with us? Go back and stay with King Absalom. You are a foreigner,(S) an exile from your homeland. 20 You came only yesterday. And today shall I make you wander(T) about with us, when I do not know where I am going? Go back, and take your people with you. May the Lord show you kindness and faithfulness.”[c](U)
21 But Ittai replied to the king, “As surely as the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be.”(V)
22 David said to Ittai, “Go ahead, march on.” So Ittai the Gittite marched on with all his men and the families that were with him.
23 The whole countryside wept aloud(W) as all the people passed by. The king also crossed the Kidron Valley,(X) and all the people moved on toward the wilderness.
24 Zadok(Y) was there, too, and all the Levites who were with him were carrying the ark(Z) of the covenant of God. They set down the ark of God, and Abiathar(AA) offered sacrifices until all the people had finished leaving the city.
25 Then the king said to Zadok, “Take the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the Lord’s eyes, he will bring me back and let me see it and his dwelling place(AB) again. 26 But if he says, ‘I am not pleased with you,’ then I am ready; let him do to me whatever seems good to him.(AC)”
27 The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Do you understand?(AD) Go back to the city with my blessing. Take your son Ahimaaz with you, and also Abiathar’s son Jonathan.(AE) You and Abiathar return with your two sons. 28 I will wait at the fords(AF) in the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.” 29 So Zadok and Abiathar took the ark of God back to Jerusalem and stayed there.
30 But David continued up the Mount of Olives, weeping(AG) as he went; his head(AH) was covered and he was barefoot. All the people with him covered their heads too and were weeping as they went up. 31 Now David had been told, “Ahithophel(AI) is among the conspirators with Absalom.” So David prayed, “Lord, turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness.”
32 When David arrived at the summit, where people used to worship God, Hushai(AJ) the Arkite(AK) was there to meet him, his robe torn and dust(AL) on his head. 33 David said to him, “If you go with me, you will be a burden(AM) to me. 34 But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, ‘Your Majesty, I will be your servant; I was your father’s servant in the past, but now I will be your servant,’(AN) then you can help me by frustrating(AO) Ahithophel’s advice. 35 Won’t the priests Zadok and Abiathar be there with you? Tell them anything you hear in the king’s palace.(AP) 36 Their two sons, Ahimaaz(AQ) son of Zadok and Jonathan(AR) son of Abiathar, are there with them. Send them to me with anything you hear.”
37 So Hushai,(AS) David’s confidant, arrived at Jerusalem as Absalom(AT) was entering the city.

2 And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.
3 And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.
4 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!
5 And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.
6 And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
7 And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the Lord, in Hebron.
8 For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the Lord shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.
9 And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron.
10 But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron.
11 And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not any thing.
12 And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.
13 And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.
14 And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.
15 And the king's servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.
16 And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house.
17 And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and tarried in a place that was far off.
18 And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.
19 Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile.
20 Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.
21 And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the Lord liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.
22 And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.
23 And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.
24 And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.
25 And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the Lord, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation:
26 But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.
27 The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art not thou a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.
28 See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me.
29 Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried there.
30 And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.
31 And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O Lord, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.
32 And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head:
33 Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me:
34 But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father's servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.
35 And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king's house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.
36 Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok's son, and Jonathan Abiathar's son; and by them ye shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear.
37 So Hushai David's friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

Absalom’s Treason
15 After this (A)it happened that Absalom (B)provided himself with chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him. 2 Now Absalom would rise early and stand beside the way to the gate. So it was, whenever anyone who had a (C)lawsuit[a] came to the king for a decision, that Absalom would call to him and say, “What city are you from?” And he would say, “Your servant is from such and such a tribe of Israel.” 3 Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your [b]case is good and right; but there is no [c]deputy of the king to hear you.” 4 Moreover Absalom would say, (D)“Oh, that I were made judge in the land, and everyone who has any suit or cause would come to me; then I would give him justice.” 5 And so it was, whenever anyone came near to bow down to him, that he would put out his hand and take him and (E)kiss him. 6 In this manner Absalom acted toward all Israel who came to the king for judgment. (F)So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
7 Now it came to pass (G)after [d]forty years that Absalom said to the king, “Please, let me go to (H)Hebron and pay the vow which I made to the Lord. 8 (I)For your servant (J)took a vow (K)while I dwelt at Geshur in Syria, saying, ‘If the Lord indeed brings me back to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.’ ”
9 And the king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron.
10 Then Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, ‘Absalom (L)reigns in Hebron!’ ” 11 And with Absalom went two hundred men (M)invited from Jerusalem, and they (N)went along innocently and did not know anything. 12 Then Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, (O)David’s counselor, from his city—from (P)Giloh—while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy grew strong, for the people with Absalom (Q)continually increased in number.
David Escapes from Jerusalem
13 Now a messenger came to David, saying, (R)“The hearts of the men of Israel are [e]with Absalom.”
14 So David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let us (S)flee, or we shall not escape from Absalom. Make haste to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly and bring disaster upon us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”
15 And the king’s servants said to the king, “We are your servants, ready to do whatever my lord the king commands.” 16 Then (T)the king went out with all his household after him. But the king left (U)ten women, concubines, to keep the house. 17 And the king went out with all the people after him, and stopped at the outskirts. 18 Then all his servants passed [f]before him; (V)and all the Cherethites, all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, (W)six hundred men who had followed him from Gath, passed before the king.
19 Then the king said to (X)Ittai the Gittite, “Why are you also going with us? Return and remain with the king. For you are a foreigner and also an exile from your own place. 20 In fact, you came only yesterday. Should I make you wander up and down with us today, since I go (Y)I know not where? Return, and take your brethren back. Mercy and truth be with you.”
21 But Ittai answered the king and said, (Z)“As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in whatever place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also your servant will be.”
22 So David said to Ittai, “Go, and cross over.” Then Ittai the Gittite and all his men and all the little ones who were with him crossed over. 23 And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people crossed over. The king himself also crossed over the Brook Kidron, and all the people crossed over toward the way of the (AA)wilderness.
24 There was (AB)Zadok also, and all the Levites with him, bearing the (AC)ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God, and (AD)Abiathar went up until all the people had finished crossing over from the city. 25 Then the king said to Zadok, “Carry the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the Lord, He (AE)will bring me back and show me both it and (AF)His dwelling place. 26 But if He says thus: ‘I have no (AG)delight in you,’ here I am, (AH)let Him do to me as seems good to Him.” 27 The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Are you not a (AI)seer?[g] Return to the city in peace, and (AJ)your two sons with you, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. 28 See, (AK)I will wait in the plains of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.” 29 Therefore Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God back to Jerusalem. And they remained there.
30 So David went up by the Ascent of the Mount of Olives, and wept as he went up; and he (AL)had his head covered and went (AM)barefoot. And all the people who were with him (AN)covered their heads and went up, (AO)weeping as they went up. 31 Then someone told David, saying, (AP)“Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” And David said, “O Lord, I pray, (AQ)turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness!”
32 Now it happened when David had come to the top of the mountain, where he worshiped God—there was Hushai the (AR)Archite coming to meet him (AS)with his robe torn and dust on his head. 33 David said to him, “If you go on with me, then you will become (AT)a burden to me. 34 But if you return to the city, and say to Absalom, (AU)‘I will be your servant, O king; as I was your father’s servant previously, so I will now also be your servant,’ then you may defeat the counsel of Ahithophel for me. 35 And do you not have Zadok and Abiathar the priests with you there? Therefore it will be that whatever you hear from the king’s house, you shall tell to (AV)Zadok and Abiathar the priests. 36 Indeed they have there (AW)with them their two sons, Ahimaaz, Zadok’s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar’s son; and by them you shall send me everything you hear.”
37 So Hushai, (AX)David’s friend, went into the city. (AY)And Absalom came into Jerusalem.
