Absalom Plans to Take David’s Kingdom
15 After this, Absalom got a chariot and horses for himself. He got 50 men to run before him. 2 Absalom would get up early and stand near the city gate.[a] If anyone had a problem he wanted the king to settle, he would come here. When he came, Absalom would call to the man. Absalom would say, “What city are you from?”
The man would answer, “I’m from one of the tribes of Israel.”
3 Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your claims are right. But the king has no one to listen to you.” 4 Absalom would also say, “I wish someone would make me judge in this land! Then I could help everyone who comes with a problem. I could help him get a fair decision for his problem!”
5 People would come near Absalom to bow to him. When they did, Absalom would reach out his hand and take hold of them. Then he would kiss them. 6 Absalom did that to all the Israelites who came to King David for decisions. In this way, Absalom won the hearts of all Israel.
7 After four years Absalom said to King David, “Please let me go to Hebron. I want to carry out my promise that I made to the Lord. 8 I made it while I was living in Geshur in Aram. I said, ‘If the Lord takes me back to Jerusalem, I will worship him in Hebron.’”
9 The king said, “Go in peace.”
So Absalom went to Hebron. 10 But he sent secret messengers through all the tribes of Israel. They told the people, “When you hear the trumpets, say this: ‘Absalom has become the king at Hebron!’”
11 Absalom had invited 200 men to go with him. So they went from Jerusalem with him. But they didn’t know what he was planning. 12 Ahithophel was one of the people who advised David. He was from the town of Giloh. While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he called Ahithophel to come from his hometown of Giloh. So Absalom’s plans were working very well. More and more people began to support him.
13 A man came in to tell the news to David. The man said, “The Israelites are beginning to follow Absalom.”
14 Then David spoke to all his officers who were with him in Jerusalem. He said, “We must leave quickly! If we don’t, we won’t be able to get away from Absalom. We must hurry before he catches us. He would destroy us and kill the people of Jerusalem.”
15 The king’s officers said to him, “We will do anything you say.”
16 The king set out with everyone in his house. But he left ten slave women to take care of the palace. 17 The king left with all his people following him. They stopped at the last house. 18 All the king’s servants passed by him. All the Kerethites and Pelethites, the king’s bodyguards, passed by him. All those from Gath, the 600 men who had followed him, passed by him.
19 The king spoke to Ittai, a man from Gath. He said, “Why are you also going with us? Turn back and stay with King Absalom. You are a foreigner. This is not your homeland. 20 Only a short time ago you came to join me. Today should I make you go with us to other places? I don’t even know where I’m going. Turn back, and take your brothers with you. May kindness and loyalty be shown to you.”
21 But Ittai said to the king, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will stay with you. I’ll be with you wherever you are. I’ll be with you whether it means life or death.”
22 David said to Ittai, “Go, march on.” So Ittai from Gath and all his people with their children marched on. 23 All the people cried loudly as everyone passed by. King David also crossed the Kidron Valley. Then all the people went on to the desert. 24 Zadok and all the Levites with him were carrying the Ark of the Covenant with God. They set down the Ark of the Covenant. And Abiathar offered sacrifices until all the people had left the city.
25 The king said to Zadok, “Take the Ark of the Covenant of God back into the city. If the Lord is pleased with me, he will bring me back. He will let me see both it and Jerusalem again. 26 But if the Lord says he is not pleased with me, I am ready. He can do what he wants with me.”
27 The king also said to Zadok the priest, “You are a seer. Go back to the city in peace. Take your son Ahimaaz and Abiathar’s son Jonathan with you. 28 I will wait near the crossings into the desert until I hear from you.” 29 So Zadok and Abiathar took the Ark of the Covenant of God back to Jerusalem and stayed there.
30 David went up the Mount of Olives crying as he went. He covered his head and went barefoot. All the people with David covered their heads also. And they were crying as they went. 31 Someone told David, “Ahithophel is one of the people with Absalom who made secret plans against you.”
So David prayed, “Lord, please make Ahithophel’s advice foolish.”
32 David came to the top of the mountain. This was where he used to worship God. Hushai the Arkite came to meet him. Hushai’s coat was torn, and there was dirt on his head to show how sad he was. 33 David said to Hushai, “If you go with me, you will be just one more person to take care of. 34 But if you return to the city, you can make Ahithophel’s advice useless. Tell Absalom, ‘I am your servant, my king. In the past I served your father. But now I will serve you.’ 35 The priests Zadok and Abiathar will be with you. You must tell them everything you hear in the king’s palace. 36 Zadok’s son Ahimaaz and Abiathar’s son Jonathan are with them. Send them to tell me everything you hear.” 37 So David’s friend Hushai entered Jerusalem. About that time, Absalom also arrived there.

15 After this, Absalom got himself a chariot, horses, and fifty men to run before him.(A) 2 He would get up early and stand beside the road leading to the city gate.(B) Whenever anyone had a grievance to bring before the king for settlement, Absalom called out to him and asked, ‘What city are you from? ’ If he replied, ‘Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel,’ 3 Absalom said to him, ‘Look, your claims are good and right, but the king does not have anyone to listen to you.’ 4 He added, ‘If only someone would appoint me judge in the land. Then anyone who had a grievance or dispute could come to me, and I would make sure he received justice.’ 5 When a person approached to pay homage to him, Absalom reached out his hand, took hold of him, and kissed him.(C) 6 Absalom did this to all the Israelites who came to the king for a settlement. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
7 When four[a] years had passed, Absalom said to the king, ‘Please let me go to Hebron to fulfil a vow I made to the Lord. 8 For your servant made a vow when I lived in Geshur of Aram,(D) saying, “If the Lord really brings me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the Lord in Hebron.” ’[b](E)
9 ‘Go in peace,’ the king said to him.(F) So he went to Hebron.
10 Then Absalom sent agents throughout the tribes of Israel with this message: ‘When you hear the sound of the ram’s horn,(G) you are to say, “Absalom has become king in Hebron! ” ’(H)
11 Two hundred men from Jerusalem went with Absalom. They had been invited and were going innocently, for they did not know the whole situation. 12 While he was offering the sacrifices, Absalom sent for David’s adviser Ahithophel the Gilonite,(I) from his city of Giloh. So the conspiracy grew strong, and the people supporting Absalom continued to increase.
13 Then an informer came to David and reported, ‘The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.’
14 David said to all the servants with him in Jerusalem, ‘Get up. We have to flee, or we will not escape from Absalom!(J) Leave quickly, or he will overtake us quickly, heap disaster on us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.’
15 The king’s servants said to the king, ‘Whatever my lord the king decides, we are your servants.’ 16 Then the king set out, and his entire household followed him. But he left behind ten concubines to take care of the palace. 17 So the king set out, and all the people followed him. They stopped at the last house 18 while all his servants marched past him. Then all the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and the people of Gath– six hundred men who came with him from there(K) – marched past the king.
19 The king said to Ittai of Gath,(L) ‘Why are you also going with us? Go back and stay with the new king since you’re both a foreigner and an exile from your homeland. 20 Besides, you only arrived yesterday; should I make you wander around with us today while I go wherever I can? Go back and take your brothers with you. May the Lord show you[c] kindness and faithfulness.’
21 But in response, Ittai vowed to the king, ‘As the Lord lives and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king is, whether it means life or death, your servant will be there! ’(M)
22 ‘March on,’ David replied to Ittai. So Ittai of Gath marched past with all his men and the dependents who were with him. 23 Everyone in the countryside was weeping loudly while all the people were marching out of the city. As the king was crossing the Kidron Valley, all the people were marching past on the road that leads to the wilderness.
24 Zadok was also there, and all the Levites with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. They set the ark of God down, and Abiathar offered sacrifices[d] until the people had finished marching past.(N) 25 Then the king instructed Zadok, ‘Return the ark of God to the city.(O) If I find favour with the Lord, he will bring me back and allow me to see both it and its[e] dwelling place.(P) 26 However, if he should say, “I do not delight in you,” then here I am – he can do with me whatever pleases him.’[f](Q)
27 The king also said to the priest Zadok,(R) ‘Look,[g] return to the city in peace and your two sons with you: your son Ahimaaz and Abiathar’s son Jonathan. 28 Remember, I’ll wait at the fords[h] of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.’ 29 So Zadok and Abiathar returned the ark of God to Jerusalem and stayed there.
30 David was climbing the slope of the Mount of Olives,(S) weeping as he ascended. His head was covered,(T) and he was walking barefoot.(U) All of the people with him covered their heads and went up, weeping as they ascended.
31 Then someone reported to David, ‘Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.’
‘Lord,’ David pleaded, ‘please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness! ’(V)
32 When David came to the summit where he used to worship God, Hushai the Archite(W) was there to meet him with his robe torn and dust on his head. 33 David said to him, ‘If you go away with me, you’ll be a burden to me, 34 but if you return to the city and tell Absalom, “I will be your servant, Your Majesty! Previously, I was your father’s servant, but now I will be your servant,” then you can counteract Ahithophel’s counsel for me. 35 Won’t the priests Zadok and Abiathar be there with you? Report everything you hear from the palace to the priests Zadok and Abiathar. 36 Take note: their two sons are there with them – Zadok’s son Ahimaaz and Abiathar’s son Jonathan. Send them to tell me everything you hear.’ 37 So Hushai,(X) David’s personal adviser, entered Jerusalem just as Absalom was entering the city.
