David Escapes from Jerusalem

13 Now a messenger came to David, saying, (A)“The hearts of the men of Israel are [a]with Absalom.”

14 So David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let us (B)flee, or we shall not escape from Absalom. Make haste to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly and bring disaster upon us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”

Shimei Curses David

Now when King David came to (A)Bahurim, there was a man from the family of the house of Saul, whose name was (B)Shimei the son of Gera, coming from there. He came out, cursing continuously as he came. And he threw stones at David and at all the servants of King David. And all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. Also Shimei said thus when he cursed: “Come out! Come out! You [a]bloodthirsty man, (C)you [b]rogue! The Lord has (D)brought upon you all (E)the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned; and the Lord has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom your son. So now you are caught in your own evil, because you are a [c]bloodthirsty man!”

Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this (F)dead dog (G)curse my lord the king? Please, let me go over and take off his head!”

10 But the king said, (H)“What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? So let him curse, because (I)the Lord has said to him, ‘Curse David.’ (J)Who then shall say, ‘Why have you done so?’ ”

11 And David said to Abishai and all his servants, “See how (K)my son who (L)came from my own body seeks my life. How much more now may this Benjamite? Let him alone, and let him curse; for so the Lord has ordered him. 12 It may be that the Lord will look on [d]my affliction, and that the Lord will (M)repay me with (N)good for his cursing this day.” 13 And as David and his men went along the road, Shimei went along the hillside opposite him and cursed as he went, threw stones at him and [e]kicked up dust.

Many are they who say of me,
There is no help for him in God.” Selah

But You, O Lord, are (A)a shield [a]for me,
My glory and (B)the One who lifts up my head.
I cried to the Lord with my voice,
And (C)He heard me from His (D)holy hill. Selah

(E)I lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the Lord sustained me.
(F)I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people
Who have set themselves against me all around.

Arise, O Lord;
Save me, O my God!

You have broken the teeth of the ungodly.

A Demon-Possessed Man Healed(A)

Then (B)they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the [a]Gadarenes. And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an (C)unclean spirit, who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind [b]him, not even with chains, because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.

When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I (D)implore[c] You by God that You do not torment me.”

For He said to him, (E)“Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” Then He asked him, “What is your name?”

And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” 10 Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country.

11 Now a large herd of (F)swine was feeding there near the mountains. 12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us to the swine, that we may enter them.” 13 And [d]at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.

14 So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened. 15 Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been (G)demon-possessed and had the legion, (H)sitting and (I)clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 16 And those who saw it told them how it happened to him who had been demon-possessed, and about the swine. 17 Then (J)they began to plead with Him to depart from their region.

18 And when He got into the boat, (K)he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him. 19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.” 20 And he departed and began to (L)proclaim in [e]Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all (M)marveled.
