Joab consigue que vuelva Absalón
14 Joab, hijo de Seruiá, sabía que el rey echaba mucho de menos a Absalón, 2 así que mandó traer de Tecoa a una mujer muy astuta que allí vivía. Le dijo: «Finge que estás de duelo y vístete de luto; y no te eches perfume, pues debes parecer una mujer que durante mucho tiempo ha estado de luto por algún muerto. 3 Luego preséntate ante el rey y repite exactamente lo que te voy a decir.»
Luego que Joab le dijo lo que tenía que repetir, 4 aquella mujer de Tecoa fue ante el rey, e inclinándose hasta tocar el suelo con la frente en señal de reverencia, le dijo:
—¡Dígnese Su Majestad ayudarme!
5 —¿Qué te pasa? —le preguntó el rey.
Ella respondió:
—Yo soy viuda, mi marido ha muerto, 6 y dos hijos que tenía esta servidora de Su Majestad tuvieron una pelea en el campo; y como no hubo quien los separara, uno de ellos hirió al otro y lo mató. 7 Y ahora todos mis parientes se han puesto en contra mía y quieren que yo les entregue al que mató a su hermano, para vengar la muerte del que fue asesinado y al mismo tiempo quitar de en medio al único heredero. Así van a apagar la única brasa que me ha quedado, y van a dejar a mi marido sin ningún descendiente que lleve su nombre en la tierra.
8 Entonces el rey respondió a la mujer:
—Vete a tu casa, que yo voy a dar órdenes en favor tuyo.
9 La mujer le contestó:
—Mi rey y señor, si alguien ha de cargar con la culpa, que seamos yo y mi familia paterna, pero no Su Majestad ni su gobierno.
10 Y el rey contestó:
—Al que te amenace, tráemelo, y no volverá a molestarte más.
11 Pero ella insistió:
—¡Ruego a Su Majestad que invoque al Señor su Dios, para que el pariente que quiera vengar la muerte de mi hijo no aumente la destrucción matando a mi otro hijo!
El rey afirmó:
—¡Te juro por el Señor que no caerá al suelo ni un pelo de la cabeza de tu hijo!
12 Pero la mujer siguió diciendo:
—Permita Su Majestad que esta servidora suya diga tan sólo una palabra más.
—Habla —dijo el rey.
13 Entonces la mujer preguntó:
—¿Por qué, pues, piensa Su Majestad hacer esto mismo contra el pueblo de Dios? Según lo que Su Majestad mismo ha dicho, resulta culpable por no dejar que regrese su hijo desterrado. 14 Es un hecho que todos tenemos que morir; somos como agua que se derrama en el suelo, que no se puede recoger. Sin embargo, Dios no quita la vida a nadie, sino que pone los medios para que el desterrado no siga alejado de él. 15 Ahora bien, si yo he venido a decir esto a Su Majestad, mi señor, es porque la gente me atemorizó. Por eso decidió esta servidora suya hablar, por si acaso Su Majestad aceptaba hacer lo que he pedido. 16 Si Su Majestad me atiende, podrá librarme de quien quiere arrancarnos, a mi hijo y a mí, de esta tierra que pertenece a Dios. 17 Esta servidora suya espera que la respuesta de Su Majestad la tranquilice, pues Su Majestad sabe distinguir entre lo bueno y lo malo, igual que un ángel de Dios. ¡Que Dios el Señor quede con Su Majestad!
18 El rey respondió a la mujer:
—Te ruego que no me ocultes nada de lo que voy a preguntarte.
—Hable Su Majestad —contestó la mujer.
19 Entonces el rey le preguntó:
—¿No es verdad que Joab te ha metido en todo esto?
Y la mujer contestó:
—Juro por Su Majestad que nada hay más cierto que lo que Su Majestad ha dicho. En efecto, Joab, oficial de Su Majestad, es quien me ordenó venir, y él mismo me dijo todo lo que yo tenía que decir. 20 Pero lo hizo con el deseo de que cambien las cosas. Sin embargo, Su Majestad es tan sabio que conoce como un ángel de Dios todo lo que ocurre en el país.
21 Como consecuencia de esto, el rey dijo a Joab:
—Mira, ya he resuelto este asunto. Ve y haz que regrese el joven Absalón.
22 Entonces Joab se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo con la frente en señal de reverencia, bendijo al rey y le dijo:
—Hoy he podido ver que cuento con el favor de Su Majestad, ya que Su Majestad ha hecho lo que este servidor suyo le sugirió hacer.
23 En seguida Joab se levantó y fue a Guesur para traer a Absalón a Jerusalén. 24 Pero el rey ordenó que se fuera directamente a su casa y no se presentara ante él; por tanto, Absalón se fue a su casa sin ver al rey.
25 En todo Israel no había un hombre tan bien parecido como Absalón, y tan alabado por ello. De pies a cabeza no tenía defecto alguno. 26 Cuando se cortaba el pelo, lo cual hacía cada fin de año, porque le molestaba, sus cabellos pesaban más de dos kilos, según el peso real. 27 Y Absalón tenía tres hijos y una hija, llamada Tamar, que era muy hermosa.
28 Durante dos años, Absalón estuvo en Jerusalén sin poder presentarse ante el rey 29 así que Absalón pidió a Joab que fuera a visitar al rey de su parte; pero Joab no quiso ir. Por segunda vez Absalón le pidió que fuera, pero Joab tampoco fue. 30 Entonces ordenó Absalón a sus criados:
—Miren, el campo de Joab está junto al mío, y lo tiene sembrado de cebada; ¡vayan y préndanle fuego!
Los criados de Absalón fueron y prendieron fuego al campo de Joab, 31 el cual fue inmediatamente a casa de Absalón y le preguntó:
—¿Por qué han prendido fuego tus criados a mi campo?
32 Absalón le respondió:
—Te mandé a decir que vinieras aquí para enviarte a ver al rey y decirle de mi parte que no tuvo objeto que yo me viniera de Guesur; que hubiera sido mejor que me quedara allá. Yo quiero ver al rey, y si soy culpable de algo, que me mate.
33 Entonces Joab fue a ver al rey y le comunicó lo que decía Absalón, y el rey lo mandó llamar. Y al llegar Absalón ante el rey, se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo con la frente. El rey, por su parte, lo recibió con un beso.

Joab procura el regreso de Absalón
14 Conociendo Joab hijo de Sarvia que el corazón del rey se inclinaba por Absalón, 2 envió Joab a Tecoa, y tomó de allá una mujer astuta, y le dijo: Yo te ruego que finjas estar de duelo, y te vistas ropas de luto, y no te unjas con óleo, sino preséntate como una mujer que desde mucho tiempo está de duelo por algún muerto; 3 y entrarás al rey, y le hablarás de esta manera. Y puso Joab las palabras en su boca.
4 Entró, pues, aquella mujer de Tecoa al rey, y postrándose en tierra sobre su rostro, hizo reverencia, y dijo: ¡Socorro, oh rey! 5 El rey le dijo: ¿Qué tienes? Y ella respondió: Yo a la verdad soy una mujer viuda y mi marido ha muerto. 6 Tu sierva tenía dos hijos, y los dos riñeron en el campo; y no habiendo quien los separase, hirió el uno al otro, y lo mató. 7 Y he aquí toda la familia se ha levantado contra tu sierva, diciendo: Entrega al que mató a su hermano, para que le hagamos morir por la vida de su hermano a quien él mató, y matemos también al heredero. Así apagarán el ascua que me ha quedado, no dejando a mi marido nombre ni reliquia sobre la tierra.
8 Entonces el rey dijo a la mujer: Vete a tu casa, y yo daré órdenes con respecto a ti. 9 Y la mujer de Tecoa dijo al rey: Rey señor mío, la maldad sea sobre mí y sobre la casa de mi padre; mas el rey y su trono sean sin culpa. 10 Y el rey dijo: Al que hablare contra ti, tráelo a mí, y no te tocará más. 11 Dijo ella entonces: Te ruego, oh rey, que te acuerdes de Jehová tu Dios, para que el vengador de la sangre no aumente el daño, y no destruya a mi hijo. Y él respondió: Vive Jehová, que no caerá ni un cabello de la cabeza de tu hijo en tierra.
12 Y la mujer dijo: Te ruego que permitas que tu sierva hable una palabra a mi señor el rey. Y él dijo: Habla. 13 Entonces la mujer dijo: ¿Por qué, pues, has pensado tú cosa semejante contra el pueblo de Dios? Porque hablando el rey esta palabra, se hace culpable él mismo, por cuanto el rey no hace volver a su desterrado. 14 Porque de cierto morimos, y somos como aguas derramadas por tierra, que no pueden volver a recogerse; ni Dios quita la vida, sino que provee medios para no alejar de sí al desterrado. 15 Y el haber yo venido ahora para decir esto al rey mi señor, es porque el pueblo me atemorizó; y tu sierva dijo: Hablaré ahora al rey; quizá él hará lo que su sierva diga. 16 Pues el rey oirá, para librar a su sierva de mano del hombre que me quiere destruir a mí y a mi hijo juntamente, de la heredad de Dios. 17 Tu sierva, pues, dice: Sea ahora de consuelo la respuesta de mi señor el rey, pues que mi señor el rey es como un ángel de Dios para discernir entre lo bueno y lo malo. Así Jehová tu Dios sea contigo.
18 Entonces David respondió y dijo a la mujer: Yo te ruego que no me encubras nada de lo que yo te preguntare. Y la mujer dijo: Hable mi señor el rey. 19 Y el rey dijo: ¿No anda la mano de Joab contigo en todas estas cosas? La mujer respondió y dijo: Vive tu alma, rey señor mío, que no hay que apartarse a derecha ni a izquierda de todo lo que mi señor el rey ha hablado; porque tu siervo Joab, él me mandó, y él puso en boca de tu sierva todas estas palabras. 20 Para mudar el aspecto de las cosas Joab tu siervo ha hecho esto; pero mi señor es sabio conforme a la sabiduría de un ángel de Dios, para conocer lo que hay en la tierra.
21 Entonces el rey dijo a Joab: He aquí yo hago esto; ve, y haz volver al joven Absalón. 22 Y Joab se postró en tierra sobre su rostro e hizo reverencia, y después que bendijo al rey, dijo: Hoy ha entendido tu siervo que he hallado gracia en tus ojos, rey señor mío, pues ha hecho el rey lo que su siervo ha dicho. 23 Se levantó luego Joab y fue a Gesur, y trajo a Absalón a Jerusalén. 24 Mas el rey dijo: Váyase a su casa, y no vea mi rostro. Y volvió Absalón a su casa, y no vio el rostro del rey.
25 Y no había en todo Israel ninguno tan alabado por su hermosura como Absalón; desde la planta de su pie hasta su coronilla no había en él defecto. 26 Cuando se cortaba el cabello (lo cual hacía al fin de cada año, pues le causaba molestia, y por eso se lo cortaba), pesaba el cabello de su cabeza doscientos siclos de peso real. 27 Y le nacieron a Absalón tres hijos, y una hija que se llamó Tamar, la cual era mujer de hermoso semblante.
28 Y estuvo Absalón por espacio de dos años en Jerusalén, y no vio el rostro del rey. 29 Y mandó Absalón por Joab, para enviarlo al rey, pero él no quiso venir; y envió aun por segunda vez, y no quiso venir. 30 Entonces dijo a sus siervos: Mirad, el campo de Joab está junto al mío, y tiene allí cebada; id y prendedle fuego. Y los siervos de Absalón prendieron fuego al campo. 31 Entonces se levantó Joab y vino a casa de Absalón, y le dijo: ¿Por qué han prendido fuego tus siervos a mi campo? 32 Y Absalón respondió a Joab: He aquí yo he enviado por ti, diciendo que vinieses acá, con el fin de enviarte al rey para decirle: ¿Para qué vine de Gesur? Mejor me fuera estar aún allá. Vea yo ahora el rostro del rey; y si hay en mí pecado, máteme. 33 Vino, pues, Joab al rey, y se lo hizo saber. Entonces llamó a Absalón, el cual vino al rey, e inclinó su rostro a tierra delante del rey; y el rey besó a Absalón.

Joab y la mujer de Tecoa
14 Joab, hijo de Sarvia, comprendió que el corazón del rey se inclinaba hacia Absalón(A). 2 Y Joab envió a Tecoa(B) a traer[a] a una mujer sabia de allí, y le dijo: Te ruego que finjas estar de duelo, te pongas ahora ropas de luto y no te unjas con óleo, sino pórtate como una mujer que por muchos días ha estado de duelo por un muerto(C); 3 después ve al rey y háblale de esta manera. Y Joab puso las palabras en su boca(D).
4 Cuando la mujer de Tecoa habló[b] al rey, cayó sobre su rostro en tierra, y postrándose(E), dijo: ¡Socorro, oh rey(F)! 5 Y el rey le dijo: ¿Qué te sucede? Y ella respondió: Ciertamente soy viuda, pues mi marido ha muerto. 6 Tu sierva tenía dos hijos; lucharon entre sí en el campo, y no habiendo quien los apartara[c], uno hirió al otro y lo mató. 7 Y he aquí que toda la familia se ha levantado contra tu sierva, y dicen: «Entrega al que hirió a su hermano, para que le demos muerte por la vida de su hermano a quien mató(G), y destruyamos al heredero también(H)». Así extinguirán el ascua que me queda, no dejando[d] a mi marido nombre ni remanente sobre la faz de la tierra.
8 Respondió el rey a la mujer: Ve a tu casa, y daré órdenes respecto a ti. 9 Y la mujer de Tecoa dijo al rey: Oh rey mi señor(I), la iniquidad sea sobre mí y sobre la casa de mi padre, pero el rey y su trono sean sin culpa(J). 10 Entonces el rey dijo: Cualquiera que te hable, tráemelo, y no te molestará más. 11 Y ella dijo: Te ruego, oh rey, que te acuerdes del Señor tu Dios, para que el vengador de sangre no aumente el daño(K), no sea que destruya a mi hijo. Y él dijo: Vive el Señor, ni un pelo de tu hijo caerá a tierra(L).
12 Dijo entonces la mujer: Permite que tu sierva diga una palabra a mi señor el rey. Y él dijo: Habla. 13 Y la mujer dijo: ¿Por qué, pues, has pensado tal cosa contra el pueblo de Dios(M)? Porque al decir esta palabra, el rey se hace como uno que es culpable, ya que el rey no hace volver a su desterrado(N). 14 Pues ciertamente moriremos(O); somos como el agua derramada(P) en tierra que no se vuelve a recoger. Pero Dios no quita la vida, sino designa medios para que el desterrado no sea alejado de él(Q). 15 Ahora, la razón por la cual[e] he venido a decir esta palabra a mi señor el rey, es porque el pueblo me ha atemorizado; por eso tu sierva se dijo: «Hablaré ahora al rey, tal vez el rey cumpla la petición[f] de su sierva. 16 Pues el rey oirá y librará[g] a su sierva de mano[h] del hombre que destruiría a ambos[i], a mí y a mi hijo, de la heredad de Dios(R)». 17 Se dijo además tu sierva: «Sea consuelo[j] la palabra de mi señor el rey, pues como el ángel de Dios, así es mi señor el rey para discernir el bien(S) y el mal. ¡Que el Señor tu Dios sea contigo!».
18 Respondió el rey y dijo a la mujer: Te ruego que no me ocultes nada de lo que voy a preguntarte. Y la mujer dijo: Hable mi señor el rey. 19 Y el rey dijo: ¿Está contigo la mano de Joab en todo esto? Y la mujer respondió y dijo: Vive tu alma, mi señor el rey, nadie puede desviarse ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda de todo lo que mi señor el rey ha hablado. En verdad fue tu siervo Joab quien me mandó, y fue él quien puso todas estas palabras en boca de tu sierva(T); 20 tu siervo Joab ha hecho esto con el fin de cambiar el aspecto de las cosas. Pero mi señor es sabio, como con la sabiduría del ángel de Dios(U), para saber todo lo que hay en la tierra.
Regreso de Absalón
21 Entonces el rey dijo a Joab: He aquí, ciertamente ahora haré esto; ve y trae al joven Absalón(V). 22 Joab cayó rostro en tierra, y postrándose, bendijo al rey; entonces Joab dijo: Oh rey mi señor, hoy tu siervo sabe que he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, puesto que el rey ha concedido la petición[k] de su siervo. 23 Joab se levantó, fue a Gesur y trajo a Absalón(W) a Jerusalén. 24 Pero el rey dijo: Que vuelva a su casa y no vea mi rostro. Y Absalón(X) volvió a su casa, y no vio el rostro del rey.
25 En todo Israel no había nadie tan bien parecido ni tan celebrado como Absalón; desde la planta de su pie hasta su coronilla no había defecto en él(Y). 26 Cuando se cortaba el cabello(Z) (y era al final de cada año que se lo cortaba, pues le pesaba mucho y por eso se lo cortaba), el cabello pesaba doscientos siclos[l] según el peso real. 27 Y a Absalón le nacieron tres hijos(AA) y una hija que se llamaba Tamar; era ella una mujer de hermosa apariencia(AB).
28 Absalón residió dos años completos en Jerusalén sin ver el rostro del rey(AC). 29 Entonces Absalón mandó a buscar a Joab para enviarlo al rey, pero él no quiso venir. Y por segunda vez envió por él, pero no quiso venir. 30 Dijo, pues, a sus siervos: Mirad, el campo[m] de Joab está junto al mío(AD), y allí tiene cebada; id y prendedle fuego. Y los siervos de Absalón prendieron fuego al campo[n]. 31 Entonces Joab se levantó, vino a la casa de Absalón y le dijo: ¿Por qué tus siervos han prendido fuego a mi campo[o]? 32 Y Absalón respondió a Joab: He aquí, envié por ti, diciendo: «Ven acá, para enviarte al rey a decirle: “¿Para qué vine de Gesur? Mejor me hubiera sido estar aún allá”». Ahora pues, vea yo el rostro del rey; y si hay iniquidad en mí, que me dé muerte(AE). 33 Cuando Joab vino al rey y se lo hizo saber, este llamó a Absalón, y este vino ante el rey y se postró sobre su rostro en tierra delante del rey. Y el rey besó a Absalón(AF).

Absalom Returns to Jerusalem
14 Joab(A) son of Zeruiah knew that the king’s heart longed for Absalom. 2 So Joab sent someone to Tekoa(B) and had a wise woman(C) brought from there. He said to her, “Pretend you are in mourning. Dress in mourning clothes, and don’t use any cosmetic lotions.(D) Act like a woman who has spent many days grieving for the dead. 3 Then go to the king and speak these words to him.” And Joab(E) put the words in her mouth.
4 When the woman from Tekoa went[a] to the king, she fell with her face to the ground to pay him honor, and she said, “Help me, Your Majesty!”
5 The king asked her, “What is troubling you?”
She said, “I am a widow; my husband is dead. 6 I your servant had two sons. They got into a fight with each other in the field, and no one was there to separate them. One struck the other and killed him. 7 Now the whole clan has risen up against your servant; they say, ‘Hand over the one who struck his brother down, so that we may put him to death(F) for the life of his brother whom he killed; then we will get rid of the heir(G) as well.’ They would put out the only burning coal I have left,(H) leaving my husband neither name nor descendant on the face of the earth.”
8 The king said to the woman, “Go home,(I) and I will issue an order in your behalf.”
9 But the woman from Tekoa said to him, “Let my lord the king pardon(J) me and my family,(K) and let the king and his throne be without guilt.(L)”
10 The king replied, “If anyone says anything to you, bring them to me, and they will not bother you again.”
11 She said, “Then let the king invoke the Lord his God to prevent the avenger(M) of blood from adding to the destruction, so that my son will not be destroyed.”
“As surely as the Lord lives,” he said, “not one hair(N) of your son’s head will fall to the ground.(O)”
12 Then the woman said, “Let your servant speak a word to my lord the king.”
“Speak,” he replied.
13 The woman said, “Why then have you devised a thing like this against the people of God? When the king says this, does he not convict himself,(P) for the king has not brought back his banished son?(Q) 14 Like water(R) spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die.(S) But that is not what God desires; rather, he devises ways so that a banished person(T) does not remain banished from him.
15 “And now I have come to say this to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid. Your servant thought, ‘I will speak to the king; perhaps he will grant his servant’s request. 16 Perhaps the king will agree to deliver his servant from the hand of the man who is trying to cut off both me and my son from God’s inheritance.’(U)
17 “And now your servant says, ‘May the word of my lord the king secure my inheritance, for my lord the king is like an angel(V) of God in discerning(W) good and evil. May the Lord your God be with you.’”
18 Then the king said to the woman, “Don’t keep from me the answer to what I am going to ask you.”
“Let my lord the king speak,” the woman said.
19 The king asked, “Isn’t the hand of Joab(X) with you in all this?”
The woman answered, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything my lord the king says. Yes, it was your servant Joab who instructed me to do this and who put all these words into the mouth of your servant. 20 Your servant Joab did this to change the present situation. My lord has wisdom(Y) like that of an angel of God—he knows everything that happens in the land.(Z)”
21 The king said to Joab, “Very well, I will do it. Go, bring back the young man Absalom.”
22 Joab fell with his face to the ground to pay him honor, and he blessed the king.(AA) Joab said, “Today your servant knows that he has found favor in your eyes, my lord the king, because the king has granted his servant’s request.”
23 Then Joab went to Geshur and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem. 24 But the king said, “He must go to his own house; he must not see my face.” So Absalom went to his own house and did not see the face of the king.
25 In all Israel there was not a man so highly praised for his handsome appearance as Absalom. From the top of his head to the sole of his foot there was no blemish in him. 26 Whenever he cut the hair of his head(AB)—he used to cut his hair once a year because it became too heavy for him—he would weigh it, and its weight was two hundred shekels[b] by the royal standard.
27 Three sons(AC) and a daughter were born to Absalom. His daughter’s name was Tamar,(AD) and she became a beautiful woman.
28 Absalom lived two years in Jerusalem without seeing the king’s face. 29 Then Absalom sent for Joab in order to send him to the king, but Joab refused to come to him. So he sent a second time, but he refused to come. 30 Then he said to his servants, “Look, Joab’s field is next to mine, and he has barley(AE) there. Go and set it on fire.” So Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.
31 Then Joab did go to Absalom’s house, and he said to him, “Why have your servants set my field on fire?(AF)”
32 Absalom said to Joab, “Look, I sent word to you and said, ‘Come here so I can send you to the king to ask, “Why have I come from Geshur?(AG) It would be better for me if I were still there!”’ Now then, I want to see the king’s face, and if I am guilty of anything, let him put me to death.”(AH)
33 So Joab went to the king and told him this. Then the king summoned Absalom, and he came in and bowed down with his face to the ground before the king. And the king kissed(AI) Absalom.

3 And come to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.
4 And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help, O king.
5 And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead.
6 And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and slew him.
7 And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.
8 And the king said unto the woman, Go to thine house, and I will give charge concerning thee.
9 And the woman of Tekoah said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father's house: and the king and his throne be guiltless.
10 And the king said, Whoever saith ought unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.
11 Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the Lord thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the Lord liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
12 Then the woman said, Let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak one word unto my lord the king. And he said, Say on.
13 And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? for the king doth speak this thing as one which is faulty, in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished.
14 For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any person: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.
15 Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his handmaid.
16 For the king will hear, to deliver his handmaid out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.
17 Then thine handmaid said, The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad: therefore the Lord thy God will be with thee.
18 Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.
19 And the king said, Is not the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine handmaid:
20 To fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.
21 And the king said unto Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom again.
22 And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and thanked the king: and Joab said, To day thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his servant.
23 So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.
24 And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king's face.
25 But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.
26 And when he polled his head, (for it was at every year's end that he polled it: because the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it:) he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels after the king's weight.
27 And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.
28 So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king's face.
29 Therefore Absalom sent for Joab, to have sent him to the king; but he would not come to him: and when he sent again the second time, he would not come.
30 Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab's field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And Absalom's servants set the field on fire.
31 Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?
32 And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
33 So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.
