14 Y CONOCIENDO Joab hijo de Sarvia, que el corazón del rey estaba por Absalom,
2 Envió Joab á Tecoa, y tomó de allá una mujer astuta, y díjole: Yo te ruego que te enlutes, y te vistas de ropas de luto, y no te unjas con óleo, antes sé como mujer que ha mucho tiempo que trae luto por algún muerto;
3 Y entrando al rey, habla con él de esta manera. Y puso Joab las palabras en su boca.
4 Entró pues aquella mujer de Tecoa al rey, y postrándose en tierra sobre su rostro hizo reverencia, y dijo: Oh rey, salva.
5 Y el rey dijo: ¿Qué tienes? Y ella respondió: Yo á la verdad soy una mujer viuda y mi marido es muerto.
6 Y tu sierva tenía dos hijos y los dos riñeron en el campo; y no habiendo quien los despartiese, hirió el uno al otro, y matólo.
7 Y he aquí toda la parentela se ha levantado contra tu sierva, diciendo: Entrega al que mató á su hermano, para que le hagamos morir por la vida de su hermano á quien él mató, y quitemos también el heredero. Así apagarán el ascua que me ha quedado, no dejando á mi marido nombre ni reliquia sobre la tierra.
8 Entonces el rey dijo á la mujer: Vete á tu casa, que yo mandaré acerca de ti.
9 Y la mujer de Tecoa dijo al rey: Rey señor mío, la maldad sea sobre mí y sobre la casa de mi padre; mas el rey y su trono sin culpa.
10 Y el rey dijo: Al que hablare contra tí, tráelo á mí, que no te tocará más.
11 Dijo ella entonces: Ruégote, oh rey, que te acuerdes de Jehová tu Dios, que no dejes á los cercanos de la sangre aumentar el daño con destruir á mi hijo. Y él respondió: Vive Jehová, que no caerá ni un cabello de la cabeza de tu hijo en tierra.
12 Y la mujer dijo: Ruégote que hable tu criada una palabra á mi señor el rey. Y él dijo: Habla.
13 Entonces la mujer dijo: ¿Por qué pues piensas tú otro tanto contra el pueblo de Dios? que hablando el rey esta palabra, es como culpado, por cuanto el rey no hace volver á su fugitivo.
14 Porque de cierto morimos, y somos como aguas derramadas por tierra, que no pueden volver á recogerse: ni Dios quita la vida, sino que arbitra medio para que su desviado no sea de él excluido.
15 Y que yo he venido ahora para decir esto al rey mi señor, es porque el pueblo me ha puesto miedo. Mas tu sierva dijo: Hablaré ahora al rey: quizá él hará lo que su sierva diga.
16 Pues el rey oirá, para librar á su sierva de mano del hombre que me quiere raer á mí, y á mi hijo juntamente, de la heredad de Dios.
17 Tu sierva pues dice: Que sea ahora la respuesta de mi señor el rey para descanso; pues que mi señor el rey es como un ángel de Dios para escuchar lo bueno y lo malo. Así Jehová tu Dios sea contigo.
18 Entonces él respondió, y dijo á la mujer: Yo te ruego que no me encubras nada de lo que yo te preguntare. Y la mujer dijo: Hable mi señor el rey.
19 Y el rey dijo: ¿No ha sido la mano de Joab contigo en todas estas cosas? Y la mujer respondió y dijo: Vive tu alma, rey señor mío, que no hay que apartarse á derecha ni á izquierda de todo lo que mi señor el rey ha hablado: porque tu siervo Joab, él me mandó, y él puso en boca de tu sierva todas estas palabras;
20 Y que trocara la forma de las palabras, Joab tu siervo lo ha hecho: mas mi señor es sabio, conforme á la sabiduría de un ángel de Dios, para conocer lo que hay en la tierra.
21 Entonces el rey dijo á Joab: He aquí yo hago esto: ve, y haz volver al mozo Absalom.
22 Y Joab se postró en tierra sobre su rostro, é hizo reverencia, y después que bendijo al rey, dijo: Hoy ha entendido tu siervo que he hallado gracia en tus ojos, rey señor mío; pues que ha hecho el rey lo que su siervo ha dicho.
23 Levantóse luego Joab, y fué á Gessur, y volvió á Absalom á Jerusalem.
24 Mas el rey dijo: Váyase á su casa, y no vea mi rostro. Y volvióse Absalom á su casa, y no vió el rostro del rey.
25 Y no había en todo Israel hombre tan hermoso como Absalom, de alabar en gran manera: desde la planta de su pie hasta la mollera no había en él defecto.
26 Y cuando se cortaba el cabello, (lo cual hacía al fin de cada año, pues le causaba molestia, y por eso se lo cortaba,) pesaba el cabello de su cabeza doscientos siclos de peso real.
27 Y Naciéronle á Absalom tres hijos, y una hija que se llamó Thamar, la cual era hermosa de ver.
28 Y estuvo Absalom por espacio de dos años en Jerusalem, y no vió la cara del rey.
29 Y mandó Absalom por Joab, para enviarlo al rey; mas no quiso venir á él; ni aunque envió por segunda vez, quiso él venir.
30 Entonces dijo á sus siervos: Bien sabéis las tierras de Joab junto á mi lugar, donde tiene sus cebadas; id, y pegadles fuego; y los siervos de Absalom pegaron fuego á las tierras.
31 Levantóse por tanto Joab, y vino á Absalom á su casa, y díjole: ¿Por qué han puesto fuego tus siervos á mis tierras?
32 Y Absalom respondió á Joab: He aquí, yo he enviado por ti, diciendo que vinieses acá, á fin de enviarte yo al rey á que le dijeses: ¿Para qué vine de Gessur? mejor me fuera estar aún allá. Vea yo ahora la cara del rey; y si hay en mí pecado, máteme.
33 Vino pues Joab al rey, é hízoselo saber. Entonces llamó á Absalom, el cual vino al rey, é inclinó su rostro á tierra delante del rey: y el rey besó á Absalom.

Bumalik si Absalom sa Jerusalem
14 Alam ni Joab, anak ni Zeruya, na nangungulila si Haring David kay Absalom. 2 Kaya nagpatawag siya ng isang matalinong babae galing sa Tekoa. Pagdating ng babae, sinabi ni Joab sa kanya, “Magkunwari kang nagluluksa. Magsuot ka ng damit na panluksa at huwag kang magpahid ng mabangong langis. Umarte kang gaya ng isang nagluluksa ng mahabang panahon. 3 Pagkatapos, pumunta ka sa hari at sabihin mo sa kanya ang sasabihin ko sa iyo.” At sinabi ni Joab sa kanya ang dapat niyang sabihin sa hari.
4 Pumunta ang babae sa hari at nagpatirapa siya bilang paggalang. Pagkatapos, sinabi ng babae, “Tulungan nʼyo po ako, Mahal na Hari!” 5 Tinanong siya ng hari, “Ano ba ang problema mo?” Sumagot siya, “Isa po akong biyuda, 6 at may dalawa akong anak na lalaki. Isang araw, nag-away po silang dalawa sa bukid, at dahil walang umawat sa kanila, napatay ang isa. 7 Pinuntahan ako ng lahat ng kamag-anak ko at sinabi, ‘Ibigay mo sa amin ang anak mo, at papatayin namin siya dahil pinatay niya ang kapatid niya. Hindi siya nararapat magmana ng mga ari-arian ng kanyang ama.’ Kung gagawin nila ito, mawawala pa ang isa kong anak na siya na lang ang inaasahan kong tutulong sa akin, at mawawala na rin ang pangalan ng asawa ko rito sa mundo.”
8 Sinabi ng hari sa babae, “Umuwi ka na, ako na ang bahala. Mag-uutos akong huwag na nilang saktan ang anak mo.” 9 Sinabi ng babae, “Mahal na Hari, kung kayo man po ay babatikusin dahil sa pagpanig nʼyo sa akin, ako po at ang aking pamilya ang mananagot at hindi kayo.” 10 Sumagot ang hari, “Kung may magbabanta sa iyo, dalhin mo siya sa akin at titiyakin kong hindi ka na niya muling gagambalain.” 11 Sinabi ng babae, “Mahal na Hari, sumumpa po kayo sa Panginoon na inyong Dios, na hindi nʼyo papayagang may maghiganti pa sa anak ko para hindi na lumala ang pangyayari, at para hindi mapatay ang anak ko.” Sumagot si Haring David, “Isinusumpa ko sa Panginoon na buhay, na hindi mapapahamak ang anak mo.”[a]
12 Sinabi ng babae, “Mahal na Hari, may isa pa po akong hihilingin sa inyo.” Sumagot ang hari, “Sige, sabihin mo.” 13 Sinabi ng babae, “Bakit hindi nʼyo po gawin sa mga mamamayan ng Dios ang ipinangako nʼyong gagawin para sa akin? Kayo na ang humatol sa inyong sarili sa ginawa nʼyong desisyon, dahil sa hindi nʼyo pagpapabalik sa itinaboy nʼyong anak. 14 Mamamatay tayong lahat; magiging gaya tayo ng tubig na natapon sa lupa at hindi na muling makukuha. Pero hindi lang po basta-basta kinukuha ng Dios ang buhay ng tao, sinisikap niyang mapanumbalik ang mga taong napalayo sa kanya.
15 “Mahal na Hari, pumunta po ako rito para sabihin ang problema ko dahil natatakot ako sa mga kamag-anak ko. Nagpasya akong makipag-usap sa inyo dahil baka magawan nʼyo ng paraan ang kahilingan ko, 16 na mailigtas nʼyo kami ng aking anak sa mga taong nagtatangkang kunin ang lupaing ibinigay sa amin ng Dios. 17 Ang desisyon nʼyo ang makapagbibigay sa akin ng kapayapaan dahil tulad kayo ng isang anghel ng Dios, na nakakaalam kung ano ang masama at mabuti. Lagi sana kayong samahan ng Panginoon na inyong Dios.” 18 Sinabi ng hari sa babae, “May itatanong ako sa iyo at gusto kong sagutin mo ako nang totoo.” Sumagot ang babae, “Sige po, Mahal na Hari.” 19 Nagtanong ang hari, “Si Joab ba ang nagturo nito sa iyo?” Sumagot ang babae, “Hindi ko po kayang magsinungaling sa inyo, Mahal na Hari. Si Joab nga po ang nag-utos sa aking gawin ito at siya rin ang nagturo sa akin kung ano ang mga dapat kong sabihin. 20 Ginawa po niya ito para magkaayos na po kayo ni Absalom. Pero matalino kayo, Mahal na Hari, gaya ng isang anghel ng Dios, nalalaman nʼyo ang lahat ng nangyayari sa bansa natin.”
21 Kaya ipinatawag ng hari si Joab at sinabi, “Sige, lumakad ka at dalhin mo pabalik dito ang binatang si Absalom.” 22 Nagpatirapa siya sa hari at sinabi, “Pagpalain sana kayo ng Panginoon, Mahal na Hari. Ngayon, nalalaman kong nalulugod kayo sa akin dahil tinupad nʼyo ang kahilingan ko.” 23 Pagkatapos, pumunta si Joab sa Geshur at dinala si Absalom pabalik sa Jerusalem. 24 Pero iniutos ng hari, “Doon siya pauwiin sa bahay niya. Ayaw ko siyang makita rito sa palasyo.” Kaya umuwi si Absalom sa sarili niyang bahay at hindi na siya nagpakita sa hari.
25 Wala nang hihigit pa sa kagwapuhan ni Absalom sa buong Israel kaya hinahangaan siya ng lahat. Wala siyang kapintasan mula ulo hanggang paa. 26 Isang beses lang siya magpagupit bawat taon kapag nabibigatan na siya sa buhok niya. Kung titimbangin ang buhok niya, aabot ito ng dalawang kilo, ayon sa timbangang ginagamit ng hari. 27 Si Absalom ay may tatlong anak na lalaki at isang napakagandang babaeng nagngangalang Tamar. 28 Nanirahan si Absalom sa Jerusalem sa loob ng dalawang taon na hindi nakikita ang hari.
29 Isang araw, ipinatawag ni Absalom si Joab para hilingin na makipag-usap ito sa hari para sa kanya. Pero hindi pumunta si Joab kay Absalom. Kaya muling ipinatawag siya ni Absalom, pero hindi na naman siya pumunta. 30 Sinabi ni Absalom sa mga lingkod niya, “Sunugin nʼyo ang bukid ni Joab na taniman ng sebada. Katabi lang ito ng bukid ko.” Kaya sinunog nila ang bukid ni Joab.
31 Pumunta si Joab kay Absalom at sinabi, “Bakit sinunog ng mga lingkod mo ang bukid ko?” 32 Sumagot si Absalom, “Dahil hindi ka pumunta rito noong ipinatawag kita. Gusto ko sanang pumunta ka sa hari at tanungin siya kung bakit ipinakuha pa niya ako sa Geshur. Mas mabuti pang nagpaiwan na lang ako roon. Gusto kong makita ang hari, kung nagkasala ako, patayin niya ako.”
33 Kaya pumunta si Joab sa hari, at ipinaabot dito ang mga sinabi ni Absalom. Pagkatapos, ipinatawag ng hari si Absalom, pagdating niya, yumukod ito sa hari bilang paggalang. At hinalikan siya ng hari.

Absalom Returns to Jerusalem
14 Joab(A) son of Zeruiah knew that the king’s heart longed for Absalom. 2 So Joab sent someone to Tekoa(B) and had a wise woman(C) brought from there. He said to her, “Pretend you are in mourning. Dress in mourning clothes, and don’t use any cosmetic lotions.(D) Act like a woman who has spent many days grieving for the dead. 3 Then go to the king and speak these words to him.” And Joab(E) put the words in her mouth.
4 When the woman from Tekoa went[a] to the king, she fell with her face to the ground to pay him honor, and she said, “Help me, Your Majesty!”
5 The king asked her, “What is troubling you?”
She said, “I am a widow; my husband is dead. 6 I your servant had two sons. They got into a fight with each other in the field, and no one was there to separate them. One struck the other and killed him. 7 Now the whole clan has risen up against your servant; they say, ‘Hand over the one who struck his brother down, so that we may put him to death(F) for the life of his brother whom he killed; then we will get rid of the heir(G) as well.’ They would put out the only burning coal I have left,(H) leaving my husband neither name nor descendant on the face of the earth.”
8 The king said to the woman, “Go home,(I) and I will issue an order in your behalf.”
9 But the woman from Tekoa said to him, “Let my lord the king pardon(J) me and my family,(K) and let the king and his throne be without guilt.(L)”
10 The king replied, “If anyone says anything to you, bring them to me, and they will not bother you again.”
11 She said, “Then let the king invoke the Lord his God to prevent the avenger(M) of blood from adding to the destruction, so that my son will not be destroyed.”
“As surely as the Lord lives,” he said, “not one hair(N) of your son’s head will fall to the ground.(O)”
12 Then the woman said, “Let your servant speak a word to my lord the king.”
“Speak,” he replied.
13 The woman said, “Why then have you devised a thing like this against the people of God? When the king says this, does he not convict himself,(P) for the king has not brought back his banished son?(Q) 14 Like water(R) spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die.(S) But that is not what God desires; rather, he devises ways so that a banished person(T) does not remain banished from him.
15 “And now I have come to say this to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid. Your servant thought, ‘I will speak to the king; perhaps he will grant his servant’s request. 16 Perhaps the king will agree to deliver his servant from the hand of the man who is trying to cut off both me and my son from God’s inheritance.’(U)
17 “And now your servant says, ‘May the word of my lord the king secure my inheritance, for my lord the king is like an angel(V) of God in discerning(W) good and evil. May the Lord your God be with you.’”
18 Then the king said to the woman, “Don’t keep from me the answer to what I am going to ask you.”
“Let my lord the king speak,” the woman said.
19 The king asked, “Isn’t the hand of Joab(X) with you in all this?”
The woman answered, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything my lord the king says. Yes, it was your servant Joab who instructed me to do this and who put all these words into the mouth of your servant. 20 Your servant Joab did this to change the present situation. My lord has wisdom(Y) like that of an angel of God—he knows everything that happens in the land.(Z)”
21 The king said to Joab, “Very well, I will do it. Go, bring back the young man Absalom.”
22 Joab fell with his face to the ground to pay him honor, and he blessed the king.(AA) Joab said, “Today your servant knows that he has found favor in your eyes, my lord the king, because the king has granted his servant’s request.”
23 Then Joab went to Geshur and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem. 24 But the king said, “He must go to his own house; he must not see my face.” So Absalom went to his own house and did not see the face of the king.
25 In all Israel there was not a man so highly praised for his handsome appearance as Absalom. From the top of his head to the sole of his foot there was no blemish in him. 26 Whenever he cut the hair of his head(AB)—he used to cut his hair once a year because it became too heavy for him—he would weigh it, and its weight was two hundred shekels[b] by the royal standard.
27 Three sons(AC) and a daughter were born to Absalom. His daughter’s name was Tamar,(AD) and she became a beautiful woman.
28 Absalom lived two years in Jerusalem without seeing the king’s face. 29 Then Absalom sent for Joab in order to send him to the king, but Joab refused to come to him. So he sent a second time, but he refused to come. 30 Then he said to his servants, “Look, Joab’s field is next to mine, and he has barley(AE) there. Go and set it on fire.” So Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.
31 Then Joab did go to Absalom’s house, and he said to him, “Why have your servants set my field on fire?(AF)”
32 Absalom said to Joab, “Look, I sent word to you and said, ‘Come here so I can send you to the king to ask, “Why have I come from Geshur?(AG) It would be better for me if I were still there!”’ Now then, I want to see the king’s face, and if I am guilty of anything, let him put me to death.”(AH)
33 So Joab went to the king and told him this. Then the king summoned Absalom, and he came in and bowed down with his face to the ground before the king. And the king kissed(AI) Absalom.

2 And Joab sent to Tekoah, and fetched thence a wise woman, and said unto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on now mourning apparel, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that had a long time mourned for the dead:
3 And come to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.
4 And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help, O king.
5 And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead.
6 And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and slew him.
7 And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.
8 And the king said unto the woman, Go to thine house, and I will give charge concerning thee.
9 And the woman of Tekoah said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father's house: and the king and his throne be guiltless.
10 And the king said, Whoever saith ought unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.
11 Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember the Lord thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the Lord liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
12 Then the woman said, Let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak one word unto my lord the king. And he said, Say on.
13 And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? for the king doth speak this thing as one which is faulty, in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished.
14 For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any person: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.
15 Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his handmaid.
16 For the king will hear, to deliver his handmaid out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.
17 Then thine handmaid said, The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad: therefore the Lord thy God will be with thee.
18 Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.
19 And the king said, Is not the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine handmaid:
20 To fetch about this form of speech hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.
21 And the king said unto Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom again.
22 And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and bowed himself, and thanked the king: and Joab said, To day thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request of his servant.
23 So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.
24 And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king's face.
25 But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.
26 And when he polled his head, (for it was at every year's end that he polled it: because the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it:) he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels after the king's weight.
27 And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.
28 So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king's face.
29 Therefore Absalom sent for Joab, to have sent him to the king; but he would not come to him: and when he sent again the second time, he would not come.
30 Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab's field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And Absalom's servants set the field on fire.
31 Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?
32 And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.

5 Then the king said to her, “What troubles you?”
And she answered, (G)“Indeed I am a widow, my husband is dead. 6 Now your maidservant had two sons; and the two fought with each other in the field, and there was no one to part them, but the one struck the other and killed him. 7 And now the whole family has risen up against your maidservant, and they said, ‘Deliver him who struck his brother, that we may execute him (H)for the life of his brother whom he killed; and we will destroy the heir also.’ So they would extinguish my ember that is left, and leave to my husband neither name nor remnant on the earth.”
8 Then the king said to the woman, “Go to your house, and I will give orders concerning you.”
9 And the woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My lord, O king, let (I)the [b]iniquity be on me and on my father’s house, (J)and the king and his throne be guiltless.”
10 So the king said, “Whoever says anything to you, bring him to me, and he shall not touch you anymore.”
11 Then she said, “Please let the king remember the Lord your God, and do not permit (K)the avenger of blood to destroy anymore, lest they destroy my son.”
And he said, (L)“As the Lord lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the ground.”
12 Therefore the woman said, “Please, let your maidservant speak another word to my lord the king.”
And he said, “Say on.”
13 So the woman said: “Why then have you schemed such a thing against (M)the people of God? For the king speaks this thing as one who is guilty, in that the king does not bring (N)his banished one home again. 14 For we (O)will surely die and become like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. Yet God does not (P)take away a life; but He (Q)devises means, so that His banished ones are not [c]expelled from Him. 15 Now therefore, I have come to speak of this thing to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid. And your maidservant said, ‘I will now speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his maidservant. 16 For the king will hear and deliver his maidservant from the hand of the man who would destroy me and my son together from the (R)inheritance of God.’ 17 Your maidservant said, ‘The word of my lord the king will now be comforting; for (S)as the angel of God, so is my lord the king in (T)discerning good and evil. And may the Lord your God be with you.’ ”
18 Then the king answered and said to the woman, “Please do not hide from me anything that I ask you.”
And the woman said, “Please, let my lord the king speak.”
19 So the king said, “Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?” And the woman answered and said, “As you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken. For your servant Joab commanded me, and (U)he put all these words in the mouth of your maidservant. 20 To bring about this change of affairs your servant Joab has done this thing; but my lord is wise, (V)according to the wisdom of the angel of God, to know everything that is in the earth.”
21 And the king said to Joab, “All right, I have granted this thing. Go therefore, bring back the young man Absalom.”
22 Then Joab fell to the ground on his face and bowed himself, and [d]thanked the king. And Joab said, “Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your sight, my lord, O king, in that the king has fulfilled the request of his servant.” 23 So Joab arose (W)and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem. 24 And the king said, “Let him return to his own house, but (X)do not let him see my face.” So Absalom returned to his own house, but did not see the king’s face.
David Forgives Absalom
25 Now in all Israel there was no one who was praised as much as Absalom for his good looks. (Y)From the sole of his foot to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him. 26 And when he cut the hair of his head—at the end of every year he cut it because it was heavy on him—when he cut it, he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels according to the king’s standard. 27 (Z)To Absalom were born three sons, and one daughter whose name was Tamar. She was a woman of beautiful appearance.
28 And Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, (AA)but did not see the king’s face. 29 Therefore Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king, but he would not come to him. And when he sent again the second time, he would not come. 30 So he said to his servants, “See, Joab’s field is near mine, and he has barley there; go and set it on fire.” And Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.
31 Then Joab arose and came to Absalom’s house, and said to him, “Why have your servants set my field on fire?”
32 And Absalom answered Joab, “Look, I sent to you, saying, ‘Come here, so that I may send you to the king, to say, “Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me to be there still.” ’ Now therefore, let me see the king’s face; but (AB)if there is iniquity in me, let him execute me.”
33 So Joab went to the king and told him. And when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king. Then the king (AC)kissed Absalom.
