Amnón deshonra a Tamar
13 Absalón, hijo de David, tenía una hermana muy hermosa, llamada Tamar. Y sucedió que Amnón, hijo también de David, se enamoró de ella, 2 a tal grado que acabó por enfermarse de angustia, pues como su hermana Tamar no había tenido aún relaciones con ningún hombre, él encontraba muy difícil hacerle algo. 3 Pero Amnón tenía un amigo muy astuto, llamado Jonadab, que era hijo de Simá, hermano de David. 4 Un día Jonadab le preguntó:
—¿Qué te pasa, príncipe? ¿Por qué estás cada día más desmejorado? ¿No me lo vas a contar?
Amnón le respondió:
—Es que estoy enamorado de Tamar, la hermana de mi hermano Absalón.
5 Entonces Jonadab le aconsejó:
—Métete en la cama y hazte el enfermo. Y cuando vaya a verte tu padre, dile que, por favor, mande a tu hermana Tamar para que te dé de comer y prepare alguna comida allí mismo, para que tú la veas y comas lo que ella te dé.
6 Amnón se metió en la cama y se hizo el enfermo. Y cuando el rey fue a verlo, Amnón le dijo:
—¡Por favor! Que venga mi hermana Tamar y haga aquí mismo un par de tortas, y que ella misma me sirva.
7 Entonces David mandó a Tamar a la casa, y le dijo:
—Ve, por favor, a casa de tu hermano Amnón, y prepárale algo de comer.
8 Tamar fue a casa de su hermano Amnón, que estaba acostado. Y tomó ella harina, y la amasó, y allí mismo preparó las tortas y las coció; 9 luego tomó la sartén y le sirvió las tortas; pero Amnón no quiso comer, y ordenó que salieran todos los que allí estaban. 10 Cuando ya todos habían salido, Amnón le dijo a Tamar:
—Trae la comida a mi habitación, y sírveme tú misma.
Tamar tomó las tortas que había hecho y se las llevó a su hermano Amnón a su habitación, 11 pero cuando se las acercó para que comiera, él la sujetó y le dijo:
—Ven, hermana mía, acuéstate conmigo.
12 Ella le respondió:
—No, hermano mío, no me deshonres, porque esto no se hace en Israel. ¡No cometas tal infamia! 13 ¿A dónde podría ir yo con mi vergüenza? Y por lo que a ti toca, serías considerado en Israel como un necio. Te ruego que hables con el rey, que él no se opondrá a que yo sea tuya.
14 Amnón no quiso hacerle caso, y como era más fuerte que Tamar, la forzó y se acostó con ella. 15 Pero fue tal el odio que Amnón sintió después hacia ella, que terminó aborreciéndola más de lo que la había amado. Así que le ordenó:
—Levántate y vete.
16 Tamar le contestó:
—¡No, hermano mío, porque el echarme ahora de aquí sería una maldad peor que la que has cometido conmigo!
Amnón no quiso hacerle caso; 17 por el contrario, llamó a su criado y le ordenó:
—¡Echa de aquí a esta mujer, y luego cierra bien la puerta!
18 El criado la echó fuera de la casa, y luego cerró bien la puerta. Entonces Tamar, que llevaba puesta una túnica muy elegante, ropa que acostumbraban usar las princesas solteras, 19 se echó ceniza en la cabeza, rasgó la túnica que llevaba puesta y, con las manos sobre la cabeza, se fue llorando por el camino. 20 Entonces su hermano Absalón le preguntó:
—¿Así que fue tu hermano Amnón quien te hizo esto? En tal caso, guarda silencio, hermana mía, pues es tu hermano. No te preocupes demasiado por este asunto.
Tamar, al verse abandonada, se quedó en casa de su hermano Absalón. 21 Cuando el rey David se enteró de todo lo sucedido, se puso muy furioso; pero no reprendió a su hijo Amnón porque, como era su hijo mayor, lo quería mucho. 22 Absalón, por su parte, no le dijo nada a Amnón, pero lo odiaba por haber deshonrado a su hermana Tamar.
Absalón se venga de Amnón
23 Dos años después, la gente de Absalón estaba trasquilando sus ovejas en Baal-hasor, cerca del pueblo de Efraín, y Absalón invitó a comer a todos los hijos del rey. 24 Además fue a ver al rey, y le dijo:
—Ahora que mis hombres están trasquilando mis ovejas, desearía que Su Majestad y sus oficiales honraran con su compañía a este siervo suyo.
25 Pero el rey le respondió:
—No, hijo mío, no podemos ir todos nosotros, para no ocasionarte demasiados gastos.
Y aunque Absalón insistió, el rey no quiso ir, pero le dio su bendición. 26 Entonces Absalón dijo:
—Si eso no es posible, permita al menos Su Majestad que nos acompañe mi hermano Amnón.
—¿Y por qué quieres que te acompañe Amnón? —preguntó el rey.
27 Pero Absalón insistió tanto, que el rey permitió que Amnón y sus demás hijos fueran con él.
Absalón había preparado un banquete digno de un rey, 28 y había ordenado a sus criados: «Fíjense bien cuando a Amnón ya se le haya subido el vino, y cuando yo les diga que lo maten, mátenlo. No tengan miedo de hacerlo, pues son órdenes mías. Así que tengan ánimo y valor.»
29 Por lo tanto, cumpliendo las órdenes de Absalón, sus criados mataron a Amnón. Entonces todos los hijos del rey se levantaron, y montando en sus mulas huyeron.
30 Cuando aún estaban de camino, le llegó a David el rumor de que Absalón había matado a todos sus hijos, y que ninguno de ellos había quedado vivo. 31 Entonces el rey se levantó, se rasgó la ropa en señal de dolor y se tendió en el suelo. Todos sus oficiales allí presentes se rasgaron también la ropa; 32 pero Jonadab, el hijo de Simá, hermano de David, tomó la palabra y dijo:
—No piense Su Majestad que han matado a todos sus hijos. Sólo han matado a Amnón, pues así lo había decidido Absalón desde el día que Amnón violó a su hermana Tamar. 33 Por lo tanto, no crea Su Majestad que todos los príncipes han muerto. El único que ha muerto es Amnón.
34 Mientras Absalón se daba a la fuga, el joven que estaba de centinela alzó la vista y vio un grupo numeroso de gente que bajaba por el camino de Horonaim, por la ladera de la montaña. Entonces el centinela fue a decirle al rey que había visto gente bajando por el camino de Horonaim. 35 Y Jonadab dijo al rey:
—Ya vienen los hijos de Su Majestad, tal como había pensado este servidor suyo.
36 Apenas había terminado él de hablar, cuando llegaron los hijos del rey y se pusieron a llorar a voz en cuello. También el rey y todos sus oficiales lloraron muchísimo. 37-38 Absalón, por su parte, huyó y se fue con Talmai, hijo de Amihud, rey de Guesur, y allí se quedó durante tres años. Y David lloraba todos los días por la muerte de su hijo Amnón, 39 pero cuando se consoló de su muerte, sintió un profundo deseo de ver a Absalón.

Amnón y Tamar
13 Pasado algún tiempo sucedió lo siguiente. Absalón, hijo de David, tenía una hermana muy bella que se llamaba Tamar; y Amnón, otro hijo de David, se enamoró de ella.
2 Pero como Tamar era virgen, Amnón se enfermó de angustia al pensar que sería muy difícil llevar a cabo sus intenciones con su hermana. 3 Sin embargo, Amnón tenía un amigo muy astuto que se llamaba Jonadab, hijo de Simá y sobrino de David. 4 Jonadab preguntó a Amnón:
—¿Cómo es que tú, todo un príncipe, te ves cada día peor? ¿Por qué no me cuentas lo que te pasa?
—Es que estoy muy enamorado de Tamar, la hermana de mi medio hermano Absalón —respondió Amnón.
5 Jonadab sugirió:
—Acuéstate y finge que estás enfermo. Cuando tu padre vaya a verte, dile: “Por favor, que venga mi hermana Tamar a darme de comer. Quisiera verla preparar la comida aquí mismo, y que ella me la sirva”.
6 Así que Amnón se acostó y fingió estar enfermo. Y cuando el rey fue a verlo, Amnón dijo:
—Por favor, que venga mi hermana Tamar a prepararme aquí mismo dos tortas y que me las sirva.
7 David envió un mensajero a la casa de Tamar, para que diera este recado: «Ve a casa de tu hermano Amnón y prepárale la comida». 8 Tamar fue a casa de su hermano Amnón y lo encontró acostado. Tomó harina, la amasó, preparó las tortas allí mismo y las coció. 9 Luego tomó la sartén para servirle, pero Amnón se negó a comer y ordenó:
—¡Fuera de aquí todos!
Una vez que todos salieron, 10 Amnón dijo a Tamar:
—Trae la comida a mi habitación y dame de comer tú misma.
Ella tomó las tortas que había preparado y se las llevó a su hermano Amnón a la habitación, 11 pero cuando se acercó para darle de comer, él la agarró por la fuerza y dijo:
—¡Ven, hermana mía, acuéstate conmigo!
12 Pero ella exclamó:
—¡No, hermano mío! No me fuerces, que esto no se hace en Israel. ¡No cometas esta infamia! 13 ¿A dónde iría yo con mi vergüenza? ¿Y qué sería de ti? ¡Serías visto en Israel como un depravado! Yo te ruego que hables con el rey; con toda seguridad, no se opondrá a que yo sea tu esposa.
14 Pero Amnón no hizo caso, sino que, aprovechándose de su fuerza, se acostó con ella y la violó. 15 Pero el odio que sintió por ella después de violarla fue mayor que el amor que antes había tenido. Así que dijo:
—¡Levántate y vete!
16 —¡No me eches de aquí! —respondió ella—. Después de lo que has hecho conmigo, ¡echarme de aquí sería una maldad aún más terrible!
Pero él no hizo caso, 17 sino que llamó a su criado y ordenó:
—¡Echa de aquí a esta mujer y cierra la puerta!
18 Así que el criado la echó de la casa y luego cerró bien la puerta.
Tamar llevaba puesta una túnica muy elegante,[a] pues así se vestían las princesas vírgenes. 19 Al salir, se echó ceniza en la cabeza, se rasgó la túnica y con las manos a la cabeza se fue por el camino llorando a gritos.
20 Entonces su hermano Absalón dijo:
—¡Así que tu hermano Amnón ha estado contigo! Pues bien, hermana mía, cálmate y no digas nada. Toma en cuenta que es tu hermano.
Desolada, Tamar se quedó a vivir en casa de su hermano Absalón.
21 El rey David, al enterarse de todo lo que había pasado, se enfureció. 22 Absalón, por su parte, no le dirigía la palabra a Amnón, pues lo odiaba por haber violado a su hermana Tamar.
Asesinato de Amnón
23 Pasados dos años, Absalón convidó a todos los hijos del rey a un banquete en Baal Jazor, cerca de la frontera de Efraín, donde sus hombres estaban esquilando ovejas. 24 Además, se presentó ante el rey y dijo:
—Este siervo suyo tiene esquiladores trabajando. Le ruego a Su Majestad venir con su corte.
25 —No, hijo mío —respondió el rey—. No debemos ir todos, pues te seríamos una carga.
Absalón insistió, pero el rey no quiso ir; sin embargo, le dio su bendición. 26 Entonces Absalón dijo:
—Ya que usted no viene, ¿por qué no permite que nos acompañe mi hermano Amnón?
—¿Y para qué va a ir contigo? —preguntó el rey.
27 Pero tanto insistió Absalón que el rey dejó que Amnón y sus otros hijos fueran con Absalón.
28 Este, por su parte, había dado instrucciones a sus criados: «No pierdan de vista a Amnón. Y cuando se le alegre el corazón por el vino, yo daré la señal de ataque y ustedes lo matarán. No tengan miedo, pues soy yo quien da la orden. Ánimo; sean valientes».
29 Los criados hicieron con Amnón tal como Absalón había ordenado. Entonces los otros hijos del rey se levantaron, montó cada uno su mula y salieron huyendo.
30 Todavía estaban en camino cuando llegó este rumor a oídos de David: «¡Absalón ha matado a todos los hijos del rey! ¡Ninguno de ellos ha quedado con vida!».
31 El rey se levantó y, rasgándose las vestiduras en señal de duelo, se tiró al suelo. También todos los oficiales que estaban con él se rasgaron las vestiduras.
32 Pero Jonadab, el hijo de Simá y sobrino de David, intervino:
—No piense mi señor que todos los príncipes han sido asesinados, solo Amnón. Absalón ya lo tenía decidido desde el día en que Amnón violó a su hermana Tamar. 33 Mi señor el rey no debe dejarse llevar por el rumor de que han muerto todos sus hijos, pues el único que ha muerto es Amnón.
34 El centinela de la ciudad alzó la vista y vio que del oeste, por la ladera del monte, venía bajando una gran multitud.
Entonces fue a decirle al rey: «Veo venir gente por el camino de Joronayin, por la ladera del monte».[b] Mientras tanto, Absalón había huido.
35 Jonadab comentó al rey:
—Aquí llegan los hijos del rey, tal como yo le había dicho.
36 Apenas había terminado de hablar cuando entraron los hijos del rey; todos ellos lloraban a voz en cuello. También el rey y sus oficiales se pusieron a llorar desconsoladamente.
37 Absalón, en su huida, fue a refugiarse con Talmay, hijo de Amiud, rey de Guesur. Pero el rey David lloraba todos los días por su hijo Amnón. 38 Absalón se quedó en Guesur tres años. 39 Y cuando el rey David se consoló por la muerte de Amnón, comenzó a sentir grandes deseos de ver a Absalón.

13 Now it was after this that (A)Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister whose name was (B)Tamar, and (C)Amnon the son of David was in love with her. 2 But Amnon was so frustrated on account of his sister Tamar that he made himself ill, for she was a virgin, and it [a]seemed too difficult to Amnon to do anything to her. 3 But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab, the son of [b](D)Shimeah, David’s brother; and Jonadab was a very clever man. 4 And he said to him, “Why are you, the king’s son, so depressed morning after morning? Will you not tell me?” So Amnon said to him, “I am in love with Tamar, the sister of my brother Absalom.” 5 Jonadab then said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill; when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please have my sister Tamar come and give me food to eat, and have her prepare the [c]food in my sight, so that I may see it and eat from her hand.’” 6 So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill; when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please have my sister Tamar come and (E)make me a couple of pastries in my sight, so that I may eat from her hand.”
7 Then David sent a messenger to the house for Tamar, saying, “Go now to your brother Amnon’s house, and prepare [d]food for him.” 8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house, and he was lying in bed. And she took dough, kneaded it, made pastries in his sight, and baked the pastries. 9 Then she took the tray and served them to him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, “(F)Have everyone leave me.” So everyone left him. 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the [e]bedroom, so that I may eat from your hand.” So Tamar took the pastries which she had made and brought them into the bedroom to her brother Amnon. 11 When she brought them to him to eat, he (G)took hold of her and said to her, “Come, sleep with me, my sister.” 12 But she said to him, “No, my brother, do not violate me, for (H)such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this (I)disgraceful sin! 13 As for me, where could I [f]get rid of my shame? And as for you, you will be like one of the [g]fools in Israel. Now then, please speak to the king, for (J)he will not [h]withhold me from you.” 14 However, he would not listen to [i]her; since he was stronger than she, he (K)violated her and slept with her.
15 Then Amnon hated her with a very great hatred; indeed, the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Get up, go away!” 16 But she said to him, “No, because this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you have done to me!” Yet he would not listen to her. 17 Then he called his young man who attended him and said, “Now throw this woman out of my presence, and lock the door behind her!” 18 Now she had on (L)a [j]long-sleeved garment; for this is how the virgin daughters of the king dressed themselves in robes. Then his attendant took her out and locked the door behind her. 19 (M)Tamar took ashes and put them on her head, and (N)tore her [k]long-sleeved garment which was on her; and (O)she put her hand on her head and went on her way, crying out as she went.
20 Then Absalom her brother said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? But now keep silent, my sister, he is your brother; do not take this matter to heart.” So Tamar remained and was isolated in her brother Absalom’s house. 21 Now when King David heard about all these matters, he became very angry. 22 But Absalom did not speak with Amnon (P)either good or bad; for (Q)Absalom hated Amnon because he had violated his sister Tamar.
23 Now it came about after two full years that Absalom (R)had sheepshearers in Baal-hazor, which is near Ephraim, and Absalom invited all the king’s sons to celebrate.
Absalom Avenges Tamar
24 And Absalom came to the king and said, “Behold now, your servant has sheepshearers; may the king and his servants please go with your servant.” 25 But the king said to Absalom, “No, my son, we should not all go, so that we will not be a burden to you.” Though he urged him, he would not go; but he blessed him. 26 Then (S)Absalom said, “If not, please have my brother Amnon go with us.” But the king said to him, “Why should he go with you?” 27 Nevertheless Absalom urged him, so he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.
28 Then Absalom commanded his servants, saying, “See now, (T)when Amnon’s heart is cheerful with wine, and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then put him to death. Do not fear; have I not commanded you myself? Be courageous and be [l]valiant.” 29 And the servants of Absalom did to Amnon just as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons got up and each mounted (U)his mule and fled.
30 Now it was while they were on the way that the report came to David, saying, “Absalom has struck and killed all the king’s sons, and not one of them is left.” 31 Then the king stood up, (V)tore his clothes, and (W)lay on the ground; and all his servants were standing by with clothes torn. 32 (X)And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, [m]responded, “Let my lord not [n]assume that they have put to death all the young men, the king’s sons, for only Amnon is dead; because this has been set up by the [o]intent of Absalom since the day that he violated his sister Tamar. 33 So now, may my lord the king not (Y)take the report to [p]heart, [q]claiming, ‘all the king’s sons are dead’; but only Amnon is dead.”
34 Now (Z)Absalom had fled. And (AA)the young man who was the watchman raised his eyes and looked, and behold, many people were coming from the road behind him by the side of the mountain. 35 And Jonadab said to the king, “Behold, the king’s sons have come; so it has happened according to your servant’s word.” 36 As soon as he had finished speaking, behold, the king’s sons came and raised their voices and wept; and the king and all his servants also wept [r]very profusely.
37 Now (AB)Absalom had fled and gone to (AC)Talmai the son of Ammihud, the king of (AD)Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day. 38 (AE)So Absalom had fled and gone to Geshur, and was there for three years. 39 And the heart of King David longed to go out to Absalom; for (AF)he was comforted regarding Amnon, since he was dead.

Amnon and Tamar
13 In the course of time, Amnon(A) son of David fell in love with Tamar,(B) the beautiful sister of Absalom(C) son of David.
2 Amnon became so obsessed with his sister Tamar that he made himself ill. She was a virgin, and it seemed impossible for him to do anything to her.
3 Now Amnon had an adviser named Jonadab son of Shimeah,(D) David’s brother. Jonadab was a very shrewd man. 4 He asked Amnon, “Why do you, the king’s son, look so haggard morning after morning? Won’t you tell me?”
Amnon said to him, “I’m in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.”
5 “Go to bed and pretend to be ill,” Jonadab said. “When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘I would like my sister Tamar to come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare the food in my sight so I may watch her and then eat it from her hand.’”
6 So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. When the king came to see him, Amnon said to him, “I would like my sister Tamar to come and make some special bread in my sight, so I may eat from her hand.”
7 David sent word to Tamar at the palace: “Go to the house of your brother Amnon and prepare some food for him.” 8 So Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon, who was lying down. She took some dough, kneaded it, made the bread in his sight and baked it. 9 Then she took the pan and served him the bread, but he refused to eat.
“Send everyone out of here,”(E) Amnon said. So everyone left him. 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food here into my bedroom so I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the bread she had prepared and brought it to her brother Amnon in his bedroom. 11 But when she took it to him to eat, he grabbed(F) her and said, “Come to bed with me, my sister.”(G)
12 “No, my brother!” she said to him. “Don’t force me! Such a thing should not be done in Israel!(H) Don’t do this wicked thing.(I) 13 What about me?(J) Where could I get rid of my disgrace? And what about you? You would be like one of the wicked fools in Israel. Please speak to the king; he will not keep me from being married to you.” 14 But he refused to listen to her, and since he was stronger than she, he raped her.(K)
15 Then Amnon hated her with intense hatred. In fact, he hated her more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, “Get up and get out!”
16 “No!” she said to him. “Sending me away would be a greater wrong than what you have already done to me.”
But he refused to listen to her. 17 He called his personal servant and said, “Get this woman out of my sight and bolt the door after her.” 18 So his servant put her out and bolted the door after her. She was wearing an ornate[a] robe,(L) for this was the kind of garment the virgin daughters of the king wore. 19 Tamar put ashes(M) on her head and tore the ornate robe she was wearing. She put her hands on her head and went away, weeping aloud as she went.
20 Her brother Absalom said to her, “Has that Amnon, your brother, been with you? Be quiet for now, my sister; he is your brother. Don’t take this thing to heart.” And Tamar lived in her brother Absalom’s house, a desolate woman.
21 When King David heard all this, he was furious.(N) 22 And Absalom never said a word to Amnon, either good or bad;(O) he hated(P) Amnon because he had disgraced his sister Tamar.
Absalom Kills Amnon
23 Two years later, when Absalom’s sheepshearers(Q) were at Baal Hazor near the border of Ephraim, he invited all the king’s sons to come there. 24 Absalom went to the king and said, “Your servant has had shearers come. Will the king and his attendants please join me?”
25 “No, my son,” the king replied. “All of us should not go; we would only be a burden to you.” Although Absalom urged him, he still refused to go but gave him his blessing.
26 Then Absalom said, “If not, please let my brother Amnon come with us.”
The king asked him, “Why should he go with you?” 27 But Absalom urged him, so he sent with him Amnon and the rest of the king’s sons.
28 Absalom(R) ordered his men, “Listen! When Amnon is in high(S) spirits from drinking wine and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon down,’ then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Haven’t I given you this order? Be strong and brave.(T)” 29 So Absalom’s men did to Amnon what Absalom had ordered. Then all the king’s sons got up, mounted their mules and fled.
30 While they were on their way, the report came to David: “Absalom has struck down all the king’s sons; not one of them is left.” 31 The king stood up, tore(U) his clothes and lay down on the ground; and all his attendants stood by with their clothes torn.
32 But Jonadab son of Shimeah, David’s brother, said, “My lord should not think that they killed all the princes; only Amnon is dead. This has been Absalom’s express intention ever since the day Amnon raped his sister Tamar. 33 My lord the king should not be concerned about the report that all the king’s sons are dead. Only Amnon is dead.”
34 Meanwhile, Absalom had fled.
Now the man standing watch looked up and saw many people on the road west of him, coming down the side of the hill. The watchman went and told the king, “I see men in the direction of Horonaim, on the side of the hill.”[b]
35 Jonadab said to the king, “See, the king’s sons have come; it has happened just as your servant said.”
36 As he finished speaking, the king’s sons came in, wailing loudly. The king, too, and all his attendants wept very bitterly.
37 Absalom fled and went to Talmai(V) son of Ammihud, the king of Geshur. But King David mourned many days for his son.
38 After Absalom fled and went to Geshur, he stayed there three years. 39 And King David longed to go to Absalom,(W) for he was consoled(X) concerning Amnon’s death.

13 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.
2 And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her.
3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David's brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man.
4 And he said unto him, Why art thou, being the king's son, lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister.
5 And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.
6 So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.
7 Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon's house, and dress him meat.
8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes.
9 And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.
10 And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.
11 And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister.
12 And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly.
13 And I, whither shall I cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee.
14 Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her.
15 Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.
16 And she said unto him, There is no cause: this evil in sending me away is greater than the other that thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her.
17 Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her.
18 And she had a garment of divers colours upon her: for with such robes were the king's daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.
19 And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colours that was on her, and laid her hand on her head, and went on crying.
20 And Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; regard not this thing. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom's house.
21 But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth.
22 And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.
23 And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baalhazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king's sons.
24 And Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheepshearers; let the king, I beseech thee, and his servants go with thy servant.
25 And the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable unto thee. And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him.
26 Then said Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee?
27 But Absalom pressed him, that he let Amnon and all the king's sons go with him.
28 Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.
29 And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons arose, and every man gat him up upon his mule, and fled.
30 And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king's sons, and there is not one of them left.
31 Then the king arose, and tare his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent.
32 And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David's brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king's sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.
33 Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king's sons are dead: for Amnon only is dead.
34 But Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill side behind him.
35 And Jonadab said unto the king, Behold, the king's sons come: as thy servant said, so it is.
36 And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king's sons came, and lifted up their voice and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore.
37 But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day.
38 So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years.
39 And the soul of king David longed to go forth unto Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.
