Rabbah Is Captured(A)

26 Now (B)Joab fought against (C)Rabbah of the people of Ammon, and took the royal city. 27 And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, “I have fought against Rabbah, and I have taken the city’s water supply. 28 Now therefore, gather the rest of the people together and encamp against the city and take it, lest I take the city and it be called after my name.”

The Assurance of God’s Saving Work

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

20 May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble;
May the name of the God of Jacob [a]defend you;
May He send you help from the sanctuary,
And strengthen you out of Zion;
May He remember all your offerings,
And accept your burnt sacrifice. Selah

May He grant you according to your heart’s desire,
And (A)fulfill all your [b]purpose.
We will rejoice in your salvation,
And in the name of our God we will set up our banners!
May the Lord fulfill all your petitions.

Now I know that the Lord saves His [c]anointed;
He will answer him from His holy heaven
With the saving strength of His right hand.

Some trust in chariots, and some in (B)horses;
But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.
They have bowed down and fallen;
But we have risen and stand upright.

Save, Lord!
May the King answer us when we call.

29 So David gathered all the people together and went to Rabbah, fought against it, and took it. 30 (A)Then he took their king’s crown from his head. Its weight was a talent of gold, with precious stones. And it was set on David’s head. Also he brought out the [a]spoil of the city in great abundance. 31 And he brought out the people who were in it, and put them to work with saws and iron picks and iron axes, and made them cross over to the brick works. So he did to all the cities of the people of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

Joy in the Salvation of the Lord

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

21 The king shall have joy in Your strength, O Lord;
And in Your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!
You have given him his heart’s desire,
And have not withheld the (A)request of his lips. Selah

For You meet him with the blessings of goodness;
You set a crown of pure gold upon his head.
(B)He asked life from You, and You gave it to him—
Length of days forever and ever.
His glory is great in Your salvation;
Honor and majesty You have placed upon him.
For You have made him most blessed forever;
(C)You have made him [a]exceedingly glad with Your presence.
For the king trusts in the Lord,
And through the mercy of the Most High he shall not be [b]moved.

Your hand will find all Your enemies;
Your right hand will find those who hate You.
You shall make them as a fiery oven in the time of Your anger;
The Lord shall swallow them up in His wrath,
And the fire shall devour them.
10 Their offspring You shall destroy from the earth,
And their [c]descendants from among the sons of men.
11 For they intended evil against You;
They devised a plot which they are not able to (D)perform.
12 Therefore You will make them turn their back;
You will make ready Your arrows on Your string toward their faces.

13 Be exalted, O Lord, in Your own strength!
We will sing and praise Your power.

Philistine Giants Destroyed(A)

15 When the Philistines were at war again with Israel, David and his servants with him went down and fought against the Philistines; and David grew faint. 16 Then Ishbi-Benob, who was one of the sons of [a]the (B)giant, the weight of whose bronze spear was three hundred shekels, who was bearing a new sword, thought he could kill David. 17 But (C)Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid, and struck the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, (D)“You shall go out no more with us to battle, lest you quench the (E)lamp of Israel.”

Philistine Giants Destroyed(A)

Now it happened afterward (B)that war broke out at [a]Gezer with the Philistines, at which time (C)Sibbechai the Hushathite killed [b]Sippai, who was one of the sons of [c]the giant. And they were subdued.

Again there was war with the Philistines, and Elhanan the son of [d]Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s (D)beam.

Yet again (E)there was war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, with twenty-four fingers and toes, six on each hand and six on each foot; and he also was born to [e]the giant. So when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of [f]Shimea, David’s brother, killed him.

These were born to the giant in Gath, and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

Then (A)he defeated Moab. Forcing them down to the ground, he measured them off with a line. With two lines he measured off those to be put to death, and with one full line those to be kept alive. So the Moabites became David’s (B)servants, and (C)brought tribute.

David also defeated Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of (D)Zobah, as he went to recover (E)his territory at the River Euphrates. David took from him one thousand chariots, [a]seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers. Also David (F)hamstrung all the chariot horses, except that he spared enough of them for one hundred chariots.

(G)When the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David killed twenty-two thousand of the Syrians. Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became David’s servants, and brought tribute. So (H)the Lord preserved David wherever he went. And David took (I)the shields of gold that had belonged to the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

When [a]Toi king of (A)Hamath heard that David had defeated all the army of Hadadezer, 10 then Toi sent [b]Joram his son to King David, to [c]greet him and bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him (for Hadadezer had been at war with Toi); and Joram brought with him articles of silver, articles of gold, and articles of bronze. 11 King David also (B)dedicated these to the Lord, along with the silver and gold that he had dedicated from all the nations which he had subdued— 12 from [d]Syria, from Moab, from the people of Ammon, from the (C)Philistines, from Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah.
