Dumnezeu mustră pe David prin Natan
12 Domnul a trimis pe Natan la David. Şi Natan(A) a venit la el şi i-a zis(B): „Într-o cetate erau doi oameni: unul bogat şi altul sărac. 2 Bogatul avea foarte multe oi şi foarte mulţi boi. 3 Săracul n-avea nimic decât o mieluşea, pe care o cumpărase; o hrănea şi o creştea la el împreună cu copiii lui; ea mânca din aceeaşi bucată de pâine cu el, bea din acelaşi pahar cu el, dormea la sânul lui şi o privea ca pe fata lui. 4 A venit un călător la omul acela bogat. Şi bogatul nu s-a îndurat să se atingă de oile sau de boii lui ca să pregătească un prânz călătorului care venise la el, ci a luat oaia săracului şi a gătit-o pentru omul care venise la el.” 5 David s-a aprins foarte tare de mânie împotriva omului acestuia şi a zis lui Natan: „Viu este Domnul că omul care a făcut lucrul acesta este vrednic de moarte! 6 Şi să dea înapoi patru miei(C), pentru că a săvârşit fapta aceasta şi n-a avut milă.” 7 Şi Natan a zis lui David: „Tu eşti omul acesta! Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Eu te-am uns(D) împărat peste Israel şi te-am scăpat din mâna lui Saul; 8 te-am făcut stăpân pe casa stăpânului tău, am pus la sânul tău nevestele stăpânului tău şi ţi-am dat casa lui Israel şi Iuda. Şi dacă ar fi fost puţin atâta, aş mai fi adăugat. 9 Pentru ce(E) dar ai dispreţuit(F) tu Cuvântul Domnului, făcând ce este rău înaintea Lui? Ai lovit cu sabia pe Urie(G), Hetitul, ai luat de nevastă pe nevastă-sa şi pe el l-ai ucis cu sabia fiilor lui Amon. 10 Acum, niciodată nu se va depărta sabia(H) din casa ta, pentru că M-ai dispreţuit şi pentru că ai luat de nevastă pe nevasta lui Urie, Hetitul.’ 11 Aşa vorbeşte Domnul: ‘Iată, din casa ta voi ridica nenorocirea împotriva ta şi voi lua de sub ochii tăi pe nevestele tale(I) şi le voi da altuia, care se va culca cu ele în faţa soarelui acestuia. 12 Căci ai lucrat pe ascuns; Eu însă(J) voi face lucrul acesta în faţa întregului Israel şi în faţa soarelui’.” 13 David(K) a zis lui Natan: „Am(L) păcătuit împotriva Domnului!” Şi Natan a zis lui David: „Domnul îţi iartă păcatul(M), nu vei muri. 14 Dar, pentru că ai făcut pe vrăjmaşii Domnului să-L hulească(N) săvârşind fapta aceasta, fiul care ţi s-a născut va muri.”
Moartea copilului. Solomon
15 Şi Natan a plecat acasă. Domnul a lovit copilul pe care-l născuse lui David nevasta lui Urie şi a fost greu bolnav. 16 David s-a rugat lui Dumnezeu pentru copil şi a postit şi, când a venit acasă, toată noaptea a stat culcat(O) pe pământ. 17 Bătrânii casei au stăruit de el să se scoale de la pământ, dar n-a voit şi n-a mâncat nimic cu ei. 18 A şaptea zi, copilul a murit. Slujitorii lui David s-au temut să-i dea de veste că a murit copilul. Căci ziceau: „Când copilul trăia încă, i-am vorbit, şi nu ne-a ascultat. Cum să îndrăznim să-i spunem: ‘A murit copilul’? Are să se întristeze şi mai mult.” 19 David a băgat de seamă că slujitorii lui vorbeau în şoaptă între ei şi a înţeles că murise copilul. El a zis slujitorilor săi: „A murit copilul?” Şi ei au răspuns: „A murit.” 20 Atunci, David s-a sculat de la pământ. S-a spălat, s-a uns(P) şi şi-a schimbat hainele, apoi s-a dus în Casa Domnului şi s-a închinat(Q). Întorcându-se acasă, a cerut să i se dea să mănânce şi a mâncat. 21 Slujitorii lui i-au zis: „Ce înseamnă ceea ce faci? Când trăia copilul, posteai şi plângeai, şi acum, când a murit copilul, te scoli şi mănânci!” 22 El a răspuns: „Când trăia copilul, posteam şi plângeam, căci(R) ziceam: ‘Cine ştie dacă nu Se va îndura Domnul de mine şi dacă nu va trăi copilul?’ 23 Acum, când a murit, pentru ce să mai postesc? Pot să-l întorc în viaţă? Eu mă voi duce la el, dar el nu se va(S) întoarce la mine.” 24 David a mângâiat pe nevastă-sa Bat-Şeba şi a intrat la ea şi s-a culcat cu ea. Ea(T) a născut un fiu, pe care l-a numit(U) Solomon şi care a fost iubit de Domnul. 25 El l-a încredinţat în mâinile prorocului Natan şi Natan i-a pus numele Iedidia (Iubitul Domnului), pentru Domnul.
Luarea Rabei şi supunerea amoniţilor
26 Ioab(V), care împresura Raba(W) fiilor lui Amon, a pus mâna pe cetatea împărătească 27 şi a trimis soli lui David să-i spună: „Am început lupta împotriva Rabei şi am pus stăpânire pe cetatea apelor; 28 strânge acum cealaltă parte a poporului, tabără împotriva cetăţii şi ia-o, ca să n-o iau eu şi să vină asupra mea cinstea.” 29 David a strâns tot poporul şi a mers asupra cetăţii Raba; a bătut-o şi a luat-o. 30 A(X) luat cununa de pe capul împăratului ei, care cântărea un talant de aur şi era împodobită cu pietre scumpe. Au pus-o pe capul lui David, care a luat o foarte mare pradă din cetate. 31 A scos pe locuitori şi i-a trecut prin fierăstraie, prin grape de fier şi securi de fier şi i-a pus în cuptoarele de cărămizi; aşa a făcut tuturor cetăţilor fiilor lui Amon. David s-a întors la Ierusalim cu tot poporul.

Nathan Rebukes David
12 And the Lord sent (A)Nathan to David. He came to him and said to him, (B)“There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds, 3 but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children. It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms,[a] and it was like a daughter to him. 4 Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.” 5 Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, (C)“As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, 6 and he shall restore the lamb (D)fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.”
7 Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, (E)‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. 8 And I gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your arms and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. And if this were too little, I would add to you as much more. 9 (F)Why have you despised the word of the Lord, (G)to do what is evil in his sight? (H)You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and (I)have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ 11 Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house. And I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12 For you did it secretly, (J)but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun.’” 13 (K)David said to Nathan, (L)“I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, (M)“The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die. 14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly (N)scorned the Lord,[b] the child who is born to you shall die.” 15 Then Nathan went to his house.
David's Child Dies
And the Lord afflicted the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and he became sick. 16 David therefore sought God on behalf of the child. And David (O)fasted and went in (P)and lay all night on the ground. 17 And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them. 18 On the seventh day the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he did not listen to us. How then can we say to him the child is dead? He may do himself some harm.” 19 But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David understood that the child was dead. And David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.” 20 Then David arose from the earth (Q)and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothes. And he went into the house of the Lord (R)and worshiped. He then went to his own house. And when he asked, they set food before him, and he ate. 21 Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child died, you arose and ate food.” 22 He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, (S)‘Who knows whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ 23 But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, (T)but he will not return to me.”
Solomon's Birth
24 Then David comforted his wife, Bathsheba, and went in to her and lay with her, and (U)she bore a son, and he called his name (V)Solomon. And the Lord loved him 25 and sent a message by Nathan the prophet. So he called his name Jedidiah,[c] because of the Lord.
Rabbah Is Captured
26 (W)Now Joab (X)fought against (Y)Rabbah of the Ammonites and took the royal city. 27 And Joab sent messengers to David and said, “I have fought against Rabbah; moreover, I have taken the city of waters. 28 Now then gather the rest of the people together and encamp against the city and take it, lest I take the city and it be called by my name.” 29 So David gathered all the people together and went to Rabbah and fought against it and took it. 30 And he took the crown of their king from his head. The weight of it was a talent[d] of gold, and in it was a precious stone, and it was placed on David's head. And he brought out the spoil of the city, a very great amount. 31 And he brought out the people who were in it and set them to labor with saws and iron picks and iron axes and made them toil at[e] the brick kilns. And thus he did to all the cities of the Ammonites. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

Nathan’s Parable and David’s Confession
12 Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And (A)he came to him, and (B)said to him: “There were two men in one city, one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had exceedingly many flocks and herds. 3 But the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb which he had bought and nourished; and it grew up together with him and with his children. It ate of his own food and drank from his own cup and lay in his bosom; and it was like a daughter to him. 4 And a traveler came to the rich man, who refused to take from his own flock and from his own herd to prepare one for the wayfaring man who had come to him; but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”
5 So David’s anger was greatly aroused against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this [a]shall surely die! 6 And he shall restore (C)fourfold for the lamb, because he did this thing and because he had no pity.”
7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘I (D)anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. 8 I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your keeping, and gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if that had been too little, I also would have given you much more! 9 (E)Why have you (F)despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in His sight? And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has (M)put away your sin; you shall not die. 14 However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord (N)to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die.” 15 Then Nathan departed to his house.
The Death of David’s Son
And the (O)Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it became ill. 16 David therefore pleaded with God for the child, and David fasted and went in and (P)lay all night on the ground. 17 So the elders of his house arose and went to him, to raise him up from the ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food with them. 18 Then on the seventh day it came to pass that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. For they said, “Indeed, while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not heed our voice. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He may do some harm!”
19 When David saw that his servants were whispering, David perceived that the child was dead. Therefore David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?”
And they said, “He is dead.”
20 So David arose from the ground, washed and (Q)anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the Lord and (R)worshiped. Then he went to his own house; and when he requested, they set food before him, and he ate. 21 Then his servants said to him, “What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive, but when the child died, you arose and ate food.”
22 And he said, “While the child was alive, I fasted and wept; (S)for I said, ‘Who can tell whether [b]the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ 23 But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go (T)to him, but (U)he shall not return to me.”
Solomon Is Born

Its weight was a talent of gold, with precious stones. And it was set on David’s head. Also he brought out the [f]spoil of the city in great abundance. 31 And he brought out the people who were in it, and put them to work with saws and iron picks and iron axes, and made them cross over to the brick works. So he did to all the cities of the people of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

Nathan Confronts David
12 Then Adonai sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said to him, “There were two men in the same city—one was rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had an exceedingly huge flock and herd, 3 but the poor man had nothing at all, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished, and it grew up together with him and his children. It ate from his own morsel and drank from his own cup, and nestled in his bosom, and it was to him like a daughter. 4 Now a traveler came to the rich man, but he was unwilling to take one from his own flock or herd to prepare a meal for the wayfarer who had come to him. Rather, he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man that had come to him.”
5 Then David’s anger blazed hot against the man and he said to Nathan, “As Adonai lives, the man that did this deserves to die! 6 So he must make restitution for the lamb fourfold, because he did such a thing and showed no pity.”
7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says Adonai, God of Israel: It is I who anointed you king over Israel, and it is I who delivered you from the hand of Saul. 8 I also gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your bosom, and I gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. Now if that were too little, then I would have added to you so much more. 9 Why then have you despised the word of Adonai by doing such evil in My eyes? Uriah the Hittite you have struck down with the sword, and his wife you have taken to be your wife, and him you have slain with the sword of the children of Ammon 10 So now the sword will never depart from your house—because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.
11 “Thus says Adonai: Behold, I am going to raise up evil against you from your own household, and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12 Indeed you have done it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and under the sun.”
13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against Adonai.”
Nathan replied to David, “Adonai also has made your sin pass away—you will not die. 14 However, because by this deed you have made the enemies of Adonai greatly blaspheme, so even the child born to you will surely die.” 15 Then Nathan went to his house.
Then Adonai struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David and he became very sick. 16 David therefore sought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in and lay all night on the floor. 17 The elders of his household stood beside him in order to get him up from the floor but he was unwilling and would not eat food with them. 18 Then it came to pass on the seventh day that the child died. But David’s servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they thought, “Behold, while the child was still alive, we spoke to him and he didn’t listen to our voice. So how can we tell him that the child is dead? He might do something terrible!”
19 But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead. So David asked his servants, “Is the child dead?”
“He is dead,” they said.
20 Then David got up from the floor, washed and anointed himself, and changed his clothes. Then he went to the House of Adonai and worshipped. When he came back to his own palace, he asked for food, so they set food before him and he ate.
21 His servants asked him, “What is this thing you have done? You fasted and wept while the child was still alive, but as soon as the child died, you got up and ate food.”
22 He replied, “While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept, for I thought, ‘Who knows? Adonai might be gracious to me and let the child live.’ 23 But now that he has died, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? It is I who will be going to him, but he will never return to me.”
24 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba. He went to her and lay with her, and she bore a son and called his name Solomon. Adonai loved him, 25 and He sent word by the hand of the prophet Nathan. So he called his name Jedidiah[a], for Adonai’s sake.
26 Now Joab attacked Rabbah of the children of Ammon and captured the royal city. 27 So Joab sent messengers to David and said, “I have attacked Rabbah and captured the city’s water supply. 28 So now gather the rest of the troops together, camp against the city and capture it. Otherwise I will capture the city myself and it will be named after me.” 29 So David gathered all the troops, went to Rabbah, attacked it and captured it. 30 Then he took the crown of their king from off his head—its weight was a talent of gold and in it was a precious stone—and then it was placed on David’s head. He also brought a vast amount of spoils out of the city. 31 Then he brought out the people who were there and put them to work under saws, iron threshing boards and iron axes, and assigned them to brick making; and thus he did to all the cities of the children of Ammon. Then David and all the troops returned to Jerusalem.
