11 Aconteció al año siguiente, en el tiempo que salen los reyes a la guerra, que David envió a Joab, y con él a sus siervos y a todo Israel, y destruyeron a los amonitas, y sitiaron a Rabá; pero David se quedó en Jerusalén.(A)
2 Y sucedió un día, al caer la tarde, que se levantó David de su lecho y se paseaba sobre el terrado de la casa real; y vio desde el terrado a una mujer que se estaba bañando, la cual era muy hermosa. 3 Envió David a preguntar por aquella mujer, y le dijeron: Aquella es Betsabé hija de Eliam, mujer de Urías heteo. 4 Y envió David mensajeros, y la tomó; y vino a él, y él durmió con ella. Luego ella se purificó de su inmundicia, y se volvió a su casa. 5 Y concibió la mujer, y envió a hacerlo saber a David, diciendo: Estoy encinta.
6 Entonces David envió a decir a Joab: Envíame a Urías heteo. Y Joab envió a Urías a David. 7 Cuando Urías vino a él, David le preguntó por la salud de Joab, y por la salud del pueblo, y por el estado de la guerra. 8 Después dijo David a Urías: Desciende a tu casa, y lava tus pies. Y saliendo Urías de la casa del rey, le fue enviado presente de la mesa real. 9 Mas Urías durmió a la puerta de la casa del rey con todos los siervos de su señor, y no descendió a su casa. 10 E hicieron saber esto a David, diciendo: Urías no ha descendido a su casa. Y dijo David a Urías: ¿No has venido de camino? ¿Por qué, pues, no descendiste a tu casa? 11 Y Urías respondió a David: El arca e Israel y Judá están bajo tiendas, y mi señor Joab, y los siervos de mi señor, en el campo; ¿y había yo de entrar en mi casa para comer y beber, y a dormir con mi mujer? Por vida tuya, y por vida de tu alma, que yo no haré tal cosa. 12 Y David dijo a Urías: Quédate aquí aún hoy, y mañana te despacharé. Y se quedó Urías en Jerusalén aquel día y el siguiente. 13 Y David lo convidó a comer y a beber con él, hasta embriagarlo. Y él salió a la tarde a dormir en su cama con los siervos de su señor; mas no descendió a su casa.
14 Venida la mañana, escribió David a Joab una carta, la cual envió por mano de Urías. 15 Y escribió en la carta, diciendo: Poned a Urías al frente, en lo más recio de la batalla, y retiraos de él, para que sea herido y muera. 16 Así fue que cuando Joab sitió la ciudad, puso a Urías en el lugar donde sabía que estaban los hombres más valientes. 17 Y saliendo luego los de la ciudad, pelearon contra Joab, y cayeron algunos del ejército de los siervos de David; y murió también Urías heteo. 18 Entonces envió Joab e hizo saber a David todos los asuntos de la guerra. 19 Y mandó al mensajero, diciendo: Cuando acabes de contar al rey todos los asuntos de la guerra, 20 si el rey comenzare a enojarse, y te dijere: ¿Por qué os acercasteis demasiado a la ciudad para combatir? ¿No sabíais lo que suelen arrojar desde el muro? 21 ¿Quién hirió a Abimelec hijo de Jerobaal? ¿No echó una mujer del muro un pedazo de una rueda de molino, y murió en Tebes?(B) ¿Por qué os acercasteis tanto al muro? Entonces tú le dirás: También tu siervo Urías heteo es muerto.
22 Fue el mensajero, y llegando, contó a David todo aquello a que Joab le había enviado. 23 Y dijo el mensajero a David: Prevalecieron contra nosotros los hombres que salieron contra nosotros al campo, bien que nosotros les hicimos retroceder hasta la entrada de la puerta; 24 pero los flecheros tiraron contra tus siervos desde el muro, y murieron algunos de los siervos del rey; y murió también tu siervo Urías heteo. 25 Y David dijo al mensajero: Así dirás a Joab: No tengas pesar por esto, porque la espada consume, ora a uno, ora a otro; refuerza tu ataque contra la ciudad, hasta que la rindas. Y tú aliéntale.
26 Oyendo la mujer de Urías que su marido Urías era muerto, hizo duelo por su marido. 27 Y pasado el luto, envió David y la trajo a su casa; y fue ella su mujer, y le dio a luz un hijo. Mas esto que David había hecho, fue desagradable ante los ojos de Jehová.
Natán amonesta a David
12 Jehová envió a Natán a David;(C) y viniendo a él, le dijo: Había dos hombres en una ciudad, el uno rico, y el otro pobre. 2 El rico tenía numerosas ovejas y vacas; 3 pero el pobre no tenía más que una sola corderita, que él había comprado y criado, y que había crecido con él y con sus hijos juntamente, comiendo de su bocado y bebiendo de su vaso, y durmiendo en su seno; y la tenía como a una hija. 4 Y vino uno de camino al hombre rico; y este no quiso tomar de sus ovejas y de sus vacas, para guisar para el caminante que había venido a él, sino que tomó la oveja de aquel hombre pobre, y la preparó para aquel que había venido a él. 5 Entonces se encendió el furor de David en gran manera contra aquel hombre, y dijo a Natán: Vive Jehová, que el que tal hizo es digno de muerte. 6 Y debe pagar la cordera con cuatro tantos, porque hizo tal cosa, y no tuvo misericordia.
7 Entonces dijo Natán a David: Tú eres aquel hombre. Así ha dicho Jehová, Dios de Israel: Yo te ungí por rey sobre Israel, y te libré de la mano de Saúl, 8 y te di la casa de tu señor, y las mujeres de tu señor en tu seno; además te di la casa de Israel y de Judá; y si esto fuera poco, te habría añadido mucho más. 9 ¿Por qué, pues, tuviste en poco la palabra de Jehová, haciendo lo malo delante de sus ojos? A Urías heteo heriste a espada, y tomaste por mujer a su mujer, y a él lo mataste con la espada de los hijos de Amón. 10 Por lo cual ahora no se apartará jamás de tu casa la espada, por cuanto me menospreciaste, y tomaste la mujer de Urías heteo para que fuese tu mujer. 11 Así ha dicho Jehová: He aquí yo haré levantar el mal sobre ti de tu misma casa, y tomaré tus mujeres delante de tus ojos, y las daré a tu prójimo, el cual yacerá con tus mujeres a la vista del sol. 12 Porque tú lo hiciste en secreto; mas yo haré esto delante de todo Israel y a pleno sol.(D) 13 Entonces dijo David a Natán: Pequé contra Jehová. Y Natán dijo a David: También Jehová ha remitido tu pecado; no morirás. 14 Mas por cuanto con este asunto hiciste blasfemar a los enemigos de Jehová, el hijo que te ha nacido ciertamente morirá. 15 Y Natán se volvió a su casa.
Y Jehová hirió al niño que la mujer de Urías había dado a David, y enfermó gravemente. 16 Entonces David rogó a Dios por el niño; y ayunó David, y entró, y pasó la noche acostado en tierra. 17 Y se levantaron los ancianos de su casa, y fueron a él para hacerlo levantar de la tierra; mas él no quiso, ni comió con ellos pan. 18 Y al séptimo día murió el niño; y temían los siervos de David hacerle saber que el niño había muerto, diciendo entre sí: Cuando el niño aún vivía, le hablábamos, y no quería oír nuestra voz; ¿cuánto más se afligirá si le decimos que el niño ha muerto? 19 Mas David, viendo a sus siervos hablar entre sí, entendió que el niño había muerto; por lo que dijo David a sus siervos: ¿Ha muerto el niño? Y ellos respondieron: Ha muerto. 20 Entonces David se levantó de la tierra, y se lavó y se ungió, y cambió sus ropas, y entró a la casa de Jehová, y adoró. Después vino a su casa, y pidió, y le pusieron pan, y comió. 21 Y le dijeron sus siervos: ¿Qué es esto que has hecho? Por el niño, viviendo aún, ayunabas y llorabas; y muerto él, te levantaste y comiste pan. 22 Y él respondió: Viviendo aún el niño, yo ayunaba y lloraba, diciendo: ¿Quién sabe si Dios tendrá compasión de mí, y vivirá el niño? 23 Mas ahora que ha muerto, ¿para qué he de ayunar? ¿Podré yo hacerle volver? Yo voy a él, mas él no volverá a mí.
24 Y consoló David a Betsabé su mujer, y llegándose a ella durmió con ella; y ella le dio a luz un hijo, y llamó su nombre Salomón, al cual amó Jehová, 25 y envió un mensaje por medio de Natán profeta; así llamó su nombre Jedidías,[a] a causa de Jehová.
David captura Rabá

26 Joab peleaba contra Rabá de los hijos de Amón, y tomó la ciudad real. 27 Entonces envió Joab mensajeros a David, diciendo: Yo he puesto sitio a Rabá, y he tomado la ciudad de las aguas. 28 Reúne, pues, ahora al pueblo que queda, y acampa contra la ciudad y tómala, no sea que tome yo la ciudad y sea llamada de mi nombre. 29 Y juntando David a todo el pueblo, fue contra Rabá, y combatió contra ella, y la tomó. 30 Y quitó la corona de la cabeza de su rey, la cual pesaba un talento de oro, y tenía piedras preciosas; y fue puesta sobre la cabeza de David. Y sacó muy grande botín de la ciudad. 31 Sacó además a la gente que estaba en ella, y los puso a trabajar con sierras, con trillos de hierro y hachas de hierro, y además los hizo trabajar en los hornos de ladrillos; y lo mismo hizo a todas las ciudades de los hijos de Amón. Y volvió David con todo el pueblo a Jerusalén.

11 In the spring,(A) at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab(B) out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army.(C) They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah.(D) But David remained in Jerusalem.
2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof(E) of the palace. From the roof he saw(F) a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba,(G) the daughter of Eliam(H) and the wife of Uriah(I) the Hittite.” 4 Then David sent messengers to get her.(J) She came to him, and he slept(K) with her. (Now she was purifying herself from her monthly uncleanness.)(L) Then she went back home. 5 The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”
6 So David sent this word to Joab: “Send me Uriah(M) the Hittite.” And Joab sent him to David. 7 When Uriah came to him, David asked him how Joab was, how the soldiers were and how the war was going. 8 Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.”(N) So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from the king was sent after him. 9 But Uriah slept at the entrance to the palace with all his master’s servants and did not go down to his house.
10 David was told, “Uriah did not go home.” So he asked Uriah, “Haven’t you just come from a military campaign? Why didn’t you go home?”
11 Uriah said to David, “The ark(O) and Israel and Judah are staying in tents,[a] and my commander Joab and my lord’s men are camped in the open country. How could I go to my house to eat and drink and make love(P) to my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing!”
12 Then David said to him, “Stay here one more day, and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. 13 At David’s invitation, he ate and drank with him, and David made him drunk. But in the evening Uriah went out to sleep on his mat among his master’s servants; he did not go home.
14 In the morning David wrote a letter(Q) to Joab and sent it with Uriah. 15 In it he wrote, “Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down(R) and die.(S)”
16 So while Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest defenders were. 17 When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of the men in David’s army fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died.
18 Joab sent David a full account of the battle. 19 He instructed the messenger: “When you have finished giving the king this account of the battle, 20 the king’s anger may flare up, and he may ask you, ‘Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Didn’t you know they would shoot arrows from the wall? 21 Who killed Abimelek(T) son of Jerub-Besheth[b]? Didn’t a woman drop an upper millstone on him from the wall,(U) so that he died in Thebez? Why did you get so close to the wall?’ If he asks you this, then say to him, ‘Moreover, your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.’”
22 The messenger set out, and when he arrived he told David everything Joab had sent him to say. 23 The messenger said to David, “The men overpowered us and came out against us in the open, but we drove them back to the entrance of the city gate. 24 Then the archers shot arrows at your servants from the wall, and some of the king’s men died. Moreover, your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.”
25 David told the messenger, “Say this to Joab: ‘Don’t let this upset you; the sword devours one as well as another. Press the attack against the city and destroy it.’ Say this to encourage Joab.”
26 When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. 27 After the time of mourning(V) was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased(W) the Lord.
Nathan Rebukes David(X)
12 The Lord sent Nathan(Y) to David.(Z) When he came to him,(AA) he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, 3 but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.
4 “Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.”
5 David(AB) burned with anger(AC) against the man(AD) and said to Nathan, “As surely as the Lord lives,(AE) the man who did this must die! 6 He must pay for that lamb four times over,(AF) because he did such a thing and had no pity.”
7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man!(AG) This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed(AH) you(AI) king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. 8 I gave your master’s house to you,(AJ) and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. 9 Why did you despise(AK) the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down(AL) Uriah(AM) the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed(AN) him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now, therefore, the sword(AO) will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’
11 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Out of your own household(AP) I am going to bring calamity on you.(AQ) Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight.(AR) 12 You did it in secret,(AS) but I will do this thing in broad daylight(AT) before all Israel.’”
13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned(AU) against the Lord.”
Nathan replied, “The Lord has taken away(AV) your sin.(AW) You are not going to die.(AX) 14 But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for[c] the Lord,(AY) the son born to you will die.”
15 After Nathan had gone home, the Lord struck(AZ) the child that Uriah’s wife had borne to David, and he became ill. 16 David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and spent the nights lying(BA) in sackcloth[d] on the ground. 17 The elders of his household stood beside him to get him up from the ground, but he refused,(BB) and he would not eat any food with them.(BC)
18 On the seventh day the child died. David’s attendants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they thought, “While the child was still living, he wouldn’t listen to us when we spoke to him. How can we now tell him the child is dead? He may do something desperate.”
19 David noticed that his attendants were whispering among themselves, and he realized the child was dead. “Is the child dead?” he asked.
“Yes,” they replied, “he is dead.”
20 Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed,(BD) put on lotions and changed his clothes,(BE) he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate.
21 His attendants asked him, “Why are you acting this way? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept,(BF) but now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!”
22 He answered, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, ‘Who knows?(BG) The Lord may be gracious to me and let the child live.’(BH) 23 But now that he is dead, why should I go on fasting? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him,(BI) but he will not return to me.”(BJ)
24 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba,(BK) and he went to her and made love to her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon.(BL) The Lord loved him; 25 and because the Lord loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah.[e](BM)
26 Meanwhile Joab fought against Rabbah(BN) of the Ammonites and captured the royal citadel. 27 Joab then sent messengers to David, saying, “I have fought against Rabbah and taken its water supply. 28 Now muster the rest of the troops and besiege the city and capture it. Otherwise I will take the city, and it will be named after me.”
29 So David mustered the entire army and went to Rabbah, and attacked and captured it. 30 David took the crown(BO) from their king’s[f] head, and it was placed on his own head. It weighed a talent[g] of gold, and it was set with precious stones. David took a great quantity of plunder from the city 31 and brought out the people who were there, consigning them to labor with saws and with iron picks and axes, and he made them work at brickmaking.[h] David did this to all the Ammonite(BP) towns. Then he and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.
