10 Después de algún tiempo murió Nahas, el rey de los amonitas, y en su lugar reinó su hijo Hanún. 2 Entonces David pensó que debía tratar a Hanún, el hijo de Nahas, con la misma bondad con que su padre lo había tratado a él, y envió a unos de sus oficiales para que le dieran a Hanún el pésame por la muerte de su padre. Pero cuando los oficiales de David llegaron al país amonita, 3 los jefes amonitas le dijeron a Hanún, su soberano: «¿Y cree Su Majestad que David ha enviado esos hombres a dar el pésame, tan sólo para honrar al padre de Su Majestad? ¡Seguramente los ha enviado para inspeccionar y espiar la ciudad, y luego destruirla!»
4 Entonces Hanún ordenó que apresaran a los oficiales de David, y que les afeitaran media barba y les rasgaran la ropa por la mitad, hasta las nalgas. Después los despidió. 5 Cuando David lo supo, mandó que fueran a recibirlos, porque estarían sumamente avergonzados, y que les ordenaran quedarse en Jericó hasta que les creciera la barba, y que entonces regresaran.
6 Los amonitas comprendieron que se habían hecho odiosos a David, por lo que tomaron a sueldo a veinte mil soldados sirios de Bet-rehob y de Sobá, al rey de Maacá con mil hombres, y a doce mil hombres de Is-tob. 7 Pero David lo supo y mandó a Joab con todos los soldados del ejército. 8 Los amonitas avanzaron y se prepararon para la batalla a la entrada misma de la ciudad, mientras que los soldados sirios de Sobá y Rehob, y las tropas de Is-tob y Maacá, tomaron posiciones en el campo. 9 Cuando Joab vio que iba a ser atacado por el frente y por la retaguardia, escogió los mejores soldados israelitas y se preparó para atacar a los sirios. 10 Luego puso el resto de la tropa bajo el mando de su hermano Abisai, para que éste hiciera frente a los amonitas, 11 y le dijo: «Si los sirios pueden más que yo, tú vendrás a ayudarme, y si los amonitas pueden más que tú, iré a ayudarte yo. 12 Ten ánimo, y luchemos con valor por nuestra nación y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios. ¡Y que el Señor haga lo que le parezca mejor!»
13 Joab avanzó con sus tropas para atacar a los sirios, pero éstos huyeron ante él. 14 Y cuando los amonitas vieron que los sirios huían, ellos también huyeron de Abisai y se metieron en la ciudad. Joab dejó entonces de luchar contra los amonitas y regresó a Jerusalén.
15 Cuando los sirios se dieron cuenta de que Israel los había vencido, se juntaron otra vez. 16 Hadad-ézer mandó traer a los sirios que estaban al otro lado del río Éufrates, los cuales llegaron a Helam. Al frente de ellos estaba Sobac, jefe del ejército de Hadad-ézer. 17 Pero le contaron esto a David, quien, movilizando en seguida a todo Israel, atravesó el río Jordán y llegó a Helam. Allí los sirios se enfrentaron con David y lucharon contra él, 18 pero finalmente huyeron de los israelitas, pues las bajas que les causó David fueron de cuarenta mil soldados de caballería y setecientos de los carros de combate; además, David hirió de muerte a Sobac, el jefe del ejército sirio, el cual murió allí. 19 Al ver todos los reyes aliados de Hadad-ézer que los israelitas los habían derrotado, hicieron la paz con los israelitas y quedaron sometidos a ellos. A partir de entonces, los sirios tuvieron miedo de volver a ayudar a los amonitas.

10 Después de esto, aconteció que murió el rey de los hijos de Amón, y reinó en lugar suyo Hanún su hijo. 2 Y dijo David: Yo haré misericordia con Hanún hijo de Nahas, como su padre la hizo conmigo. Y envió David sus siervos para consolarlo por su padre. Mas llegados los siervos de David a la tierra de los hijos de Amón, 3 los príncipes de los hijos de Amón dijeron a Hanún su señor: ¿Te parece que por honrar David a tu padre te ha enviado consoladores? ¿No ha enviado David sus siervos a ti para reconocer e inspeccionar la ciudad, para destruirla? 4 Entonces Hanún tomó los siervos de David, les rapó la mitad de la barba, les cortó los vestidos por la mitad hasta las nalgas, y los despidió. 5 Cuando se le hizo saber esto a David, envió a encontrarles, porque ellos estaban en extremo avergonzados; y el rey mandó que les dijeran: Quedaos en Jericó hasta que os vuelva a nacer la barba, y entonces volved.

9 Viendo, pues, Joab que se le presentaba la batalla de frente y a la retaguardia, entresacó de todos los escogidos de Israel, y se puso en orden de batalla contra los sirios. 10 Entregó luego el resto del ejército en mano de Abisai su hermano, y lo alineó para encontrar a los amonitas. 11 Y dijo: Si los sirios pudieren más que yo, tú me ayudarás; y si los hijos de Amón pudieren más que tú, yo te daré ayuda. 12 Esfuérzate, y esforcémonos por nuestro pueblo, y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios; y haga Jehová lo que bien le pareciere. 13 Y se acercó Joab, y el pueblo que con él estaba, para pelear contra los sirios; mas ellos huyeron delante de él. 14 Entonces los hijos de Amón, viendo que los sirios habían huido, huyeron también ellos delante de Abisai, y se refugiaron en la ciudad. Se volvió, pues, Joab de luchar contra los hijos de Amón, y vino a Jerusalén.
15 Pero los sirios, viendo que habían sido derrotados por Israel, se volvieron a reunir. 16 Y envió Hadad-ezer e hizo salir a los sirios que estaban al otro lado del Éufrates, los cuales vinieron a Helam, llevando por jefe a Sobac, general del ejército de Hadad-ezer. 17 Cuando fue dado aviso a David, reunió a todo Israel, y pasando el Jordán vino a Helam; y los sirios se pusieron en orden de batalla contra David y pelearon contra él. 18 Mas los sirios huyeron delante de Israel; y David mató de los sirios a la gente de setecientos carros, y cuarenta mil hombres de a caballo; hirió también a Sobac general del ejército, quien murió allí. 19 Viendo, pues, todos los reyes que ayudaban a Hadad-ezer, cómo habían sido derrotados delante de Israel, hicieron paz con Israel y le sirvieron; y de allí en adelante los sirios temieron ayudar más a los hijos de Amón.

Ammon and Aram Defeated
10 Now it happened later that [Nahash] the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun became king in his place. 2 Then David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, just as his father did to me.” So David sent [a letter along with] some of his servants to console him in regard to his father’s death; and David’s servants came into the land of the Ammonites. 3 But the princes of the Ammonites [were suspicious and] said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David is honoring your father because he has sent comforters to you? Has David not sent his servants to you in order to search the city, to spy it out and overthrow it?” 4 So Hanun took David’s servants and shaved off half their beards, and cut off their robes in the middle as far as their hips, and sent them away. 5 When David was informed, he sent [messengers] to meet them [before they reached Jerusalem], for the men were greatly ashamed and humiliated. And the king said, “Stay at Jericho until your beards grow, and then return.”
6 When the Ammonites saw that they had become an object of hatred to David, they sent word and hired the Arameans (Syrians) of Beth-rehob and the Arameans of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of Maacah with 1,000 men, and the men of Tob with 12,000 men [to fight for them]. 7 When David heard about it, he sent Joab and the entire army, the strong and brave men. 8 The Ammonites came out and lined up for battle at the entrance of the [city] gate, but the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were [stationed] by themselves in the field.
9 Now when Joab saw that the battlefront was against him in front and in the rear, he selected some of all the choice men in Israel and set them in battle formation to meet the Arameans (Syrians). 10 But he placed the rest of the men in the hand of his brother Abishai, and he placed them in battle formation to meet the Ammonites. 11 Joab said [to Abishai], “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I will come to help you. 12 Be courageous, and let us show ourselves courageous for the benefit of our people and the cities of our God. And may the Lord do what is good in His sight.” 13 So Joab and the people who were with him approached the battle against the Arameans, and they fled before him. 14 When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they also fled before Abishai and entered the city. So Joab returned from battling against the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.
15 When the Arameans saw that they were defeated by Israel, they gathered together. 16 Hadadezer sent word and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the River [Euphrates]; and they came to Helam; and Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer led them. 17 When David was informed, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan, and came to Helam. Then the Arameans assembled in battle formation to meet David and fought against him. 18 But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed 700 Aramean charioteers and 40,000 horsemen, and struck Shobach the commander of their army, and he died there. 19 When all the kings serving Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Arameans (Syrians) were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore.

10 Forsooth it was done after these things, that Nahash, [the] king of the sons of Ammon, died; and Hanun, his son, reigned for him (and his son Hanun reigned in his place).
2 And David said, I shall do mercy with Hanun, the son of Nahash, as his father did mercy with me. Therefore David sent comforting (to) him by his servants on the death of the father (And David said, I shall show friendship to Nahash’s son Hanun, like his father showed to me. And so, by his servants, David sent words of comfort to Hanun on the death of his father). And when the servants of David had come into the land of the sons of Ammon,
3 the princes of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun, their lord, Guessest thou, that for the honour of thy father David hath sent comforters to thee; and not rather therefore David sent his servants to thee, that he should espy, and ensearch the city, and destroy it? (and not rather, that David sent his servants to thee to spy out, and to search through the city, so that later he could destroy it?)
4 Therefore Hanun took the servants of David, and shaved half the part of the beard of them, and he cutted away the middle clothes of them, till to the buttocks; and let go them. (And so Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off half of their beards, and cut away half of their clothes, unto the buttocks, and then let them go.)
5 And when this was told to David, he sent into the coming of them, for the men were shamed full vilely (And when this was told to David, he sent men to meet them, for these men had been vilely shamed). And David commanded to them, (and said,) Dwell ye in Jericho, till your beard (hath) waxed, and then turn ye again.
6 And the sons of Ammon saw, that they had done wrong to David, and they sent, and hired with meed of Bethrehob of Syria, and of Zoba of Syria, twenty thousand of footmen, and of king Maacah, a thousand men, and of Ishtob, twelve thousand of men. (And the Ammonites saw that they had wronged David, and so they sent for, and hired for pay, Syrians from Bethrehob and from Zoba, yea, twenty thousand footmen, and a thousand men from King Maacah, and twelve thousand men from Tob.)
7 And when David had heard this, he sent (out) Joab, and all the host of fighters (and all his army of fighting men).
8 Therefore the sons of Ammon went out, and dressed battle array before them in the entering of the gate. And Zoba, and Rehob of Syria, and Ishtob, and Maacah, were asides half in the field. (And so the Ammonites went out, and dressed the battle array before them at the entrance to the city gate. And the Syrians from Zoba and from Rehob, and the men from Tob, and from Maacah, were asides half in the field.)
9 Therefore Joab saw, that the battle was made ready against him, both even against him and behind his back; and he chose to himself of all the chosen men of Israel (and he chose for himself the best men out of all Israel), and ordained (the) battle array against (the) Syrians.
10 Forsooth he betook to Abishai, his brother, the tother part of the people, which dressed (the) battle array against the sons of Ammon.
11 And Joab said, If (the) men of Syria have the mastery against me, thou shalt be to me into help; and if the sons of Ammon have the mastery against thee, I shall help thee;
12 be thou a strong man (be thou of good courage), and fight we for our people, and for the city of our God; for the Lord shall do that, that is good in his sight.
13 Therefore Joab and the people that was with him, began battle against men of Syria, which fled anon from his face. (And so Joab, and the men who were with him, began to fight against the Syrians, who fled at once from before them.)
14 And the sons of Ammon saw, that [the] men of Syria had fled; and they fled also from the face of Abishai, and entered into the city; and Joab turned again from the sons of Ammon, and came into Jerusalem (and then Joab left off fighting the Ammonites, and went back to Jerusalem).
15 And [the] men of Syria saw that they had fallen before Israel, and they were gathered together. (And when the Syrians saw that they had fallen before Israel, they gathered themselves together.)
16 And Hadadezer[a] sent, and led out [the] men of Syria that were beyond the flood, and he brought forth the host of them; and Shobach, [the] master of the chivalry of Hadadezer, was the prince of them. (And Hadadezer sent for the Syrians who were on the other side of the Euphrates River, and they came forth to Helam; and Shobach, the master of Hadadezer’s cavalry, or of his army, was their leader.)
17 And when this was told to David, he drew together all Israel, and he passed over Jordan (and he crossed over the Jordan River), and came into Helam. And [the] men of Syria dressed (the) battle array against David, and fought against him.
18 And Syrians fled from the face of Israel; and David killed of the Syrians (the men in) seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand of horsemen; and he smote Shobach, the prince of the chivalry, the which was dead anon. (And the Syrians fled from the Israelites; and David killed of those Syrians the men in seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen; and he struck down Shobach, the leader of the cavalry, or of the army, who died on the battlefield.)
19 And all the kings, that were in help of Hadadezer, saw that they were overcome of Israel, and they made peace with Israel, and served them; and the Syrians dreaded to give (more) help to the sons of Ammon. (And when all the kings, who were subject to Hadadezer, saw that they were overcome by Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them; and from then on the Syrians were afraid to give any more help to the Ammonites.)

David Defeats the Ammonites(A)
10 In the course of time, the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun succeeded him as king. 2 David thought, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash,(B) just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father.
When David’s men came to the land of the Ammonites, 3 the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Hasn’t David sent them to you only to explore the city and spy it out(C) and overthrow it?” 4 So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved off half of each man’s beard,(D) cut off their garments at the buttocks,(E) and sent them away.
5 When David was told about this, he sent messengers to meet the men, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.”
6 When the Ammonites realized that they had become obnoxious(F) to David, they hired twenty thousand Aramean(G) foot soldiers from Beth Rehob(H) and Zobah,(I) as well as the king of Maakah(J) with a thousand men, and also twelve thousand men from Tob.(K)
7 On hearing this, David sent Joab(L) out with the entire army of fighting men. 8 The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance of their city gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maakah were by themselves in the open country.
9 Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans. 10 He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai(M) his brother and deployed them against the Ammonites. 11 Joab said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to come to my rescue; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to rescue you. 12 Be strong,(N) and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.”(O)
13 Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him. 14 When the Ammonites(P) realized that the Arameans were fleeing, they fled before Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab returned from fighting the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.
15 After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they regrouped. 16 Hadadezer had Arameans brought from beyond the Euphrates River; they went to Helam, with Shobak the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
17 When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan and went to Helam. The Arameans formed their battle lines to meet David and fought against him. 18 But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers.[a] He also struck down Shobak the commander of their army, and he died there. 19 When all the kings who were vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been routed by Israel, they made peace with the Israelites and became subject(Q) to them.
So the Arameans(R) were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore.
