10 După aceea, împăratul(A) fiilor lui Amon a murit, şi în locul lui a domnit fiul său Hanun. 2 David a zis: „Voi arăta bunăvoinţă lui Hanun, fiul lui Nahaş, cum a arătat şi tatăl lui faţă de mine”. Şi David a trimis pe slujitorii săi să-l mângâie pentru moartea tatălui său. Când au ajuns slujitorii lui David în ţara fiilor lui Amon, 3 căpeteniile fiilor lui Amon au zis stăpânului lor Hanun: „Crezi că David îţi trimite oameni să te mângâie, ca să cinstească pe tatăl tău? Ori ca să cunoască şi să cerceteze cetatea, ca s-o nimicească îşi trimite el slujitorii la tine?” 4 Atunci, Hanun a luat pe slujitorii lui David, le-a ras barba pe jumătate şi le-a tăiat hainele pe jumătate până la coapse(B). Apoi le-a dat drumul. 5 David, înştiinţat de lucrul acesta, a trimis nişte oameni înaintea lor, căci oamenii aceia erau foarte batjocoriţi, şi împăratul a spus să le spună: „Rămâneţi la Ierihon până vă va creşte barba şi pe urmă să vă întoarceţi.” 6 Fiii lui Amon, văzând că se făcuseră urâţi(C) lui David, au tocmit douăzeci de mii de pedeştri de la sirienii din Bet-Rehob şi de la sirienii din Ţoba, o mie de oameni de la împăratul din Maaca şi douăsprezece mii de oameni de la oamenii din Tob. 7 La auzul acestei veşti, David a trimis împotriva lor pe Ioab şi toată oştirea, numai(D) oameni viteji. 8 Fiii lui Amon au ieşit şi s-au aşezat în şiruri de bătaie la intrarea porţii; sirienii(E) din Ţoba şi din Rehob şi oamenii din Tob şi din Maaca erau deoparte în câmpie. 9 Ioab a văzut că avea să lupte şi înainte, şi înapoi. A ales atunci din toţi aleşii lui Israel o ceată, pe care a aşezat-o împotriva sirienilor, 10 şi a pus sub porunca fratelui său Abişai ce mai rămăsese din popor, ca să ţină piept fiilor lui Amon. 11 El a zis: „Dacă sirienii vor fi mai tari decât mine, să vii în ajutorul meu şi dacă fiii lui Amon vor fi mai tari decât tine, voi veni eu să te ajut. 12 Fii tare(F) şi să ne arătăm plini(G) de bărbăţie pentru poporul nostru şi pentru cetăţile Dumnezeului nostru, şi Domnul(H) să facă ce va crede!” 13 Ioab, cu poporul lui, a înaintat la luptă împotriva sirienilor, şi ei au luat-o la fugă dinaintea lui. 14 Şi când au văzut fiii lui Amon că sirienii o luaseră la fugă, au fugit şi ei dinaintea lui Abişai şi au intrat în cetate. Ioab a plecat de la fiii lui Amon şi s-a întors la Ierusalim. 15 Sirienii, văzând că fuseseră bătuţi de Israel, şi-au strâns puterile. 16 Hadadezer a trimis după sirienii care erau de cealaltă parte a Râului şi au venit la Helam, în frunte cu Şobac, căpetenia oştirii lui Hadadezer. 17 Au dat de veste lui David, care a strâns tot Israelul, a trecut Iordanul şi a venit la Helam: sirienii s-au pregătit de au ieşit înaintea lui David şi au început lupta cu el. 18 Dar sirienii au fugit dinaintea lui Israel. Şi David le-a tăiat şapte sute de cai de trăsură şi patruzeci de mii de călăreţi(I); a lovit şi pe căpetenia oştirii lor Şobac, care a murit pe loc. 19 Toţi împăraţii supuşi lui Hadadezer, văzându-se bătuţi de Israel, au făcut pace cu Israel şi i s-au supus(J). Şi sirienii n-au mai îndrăznit să ajute pe fiii lui Amon.

The Ammonites and Syrians Defeated(A)
10 It happened after this that the (B)king of the people of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. 2 Then David said, “I will show (C)kindness to Hanun the son of (D)Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.”
So David sent by the hand of his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the people of Ammon. 3 And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Has David not rather sent his servants to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?”
4 Therefore Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off half of their beards, cut off their garments in the middle, (E)at their buttocks, and sent them away. 5 When they told David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly [a]ashamed. And the king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”
6 When the people of Ammon saw that they (F)had made themselves repulsive to David, the people of Ammon sent and hired (G)the Syrians of (H)Beth Rehob and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand foot soldiers; and from the king of (I)Maacah one thousand men, and from (J)Ish-Tob twelve thousand men. 7 Now when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of (K)the mighty men. 8 Then the people of Ammon came out and put themselves in battle array at the entrance of the gate. And (L)the Syrians of Zoba, Beth Rehob, Ish-Tob, and Maacah were by themselves in the field.
9 When Joab saw that the battle line was against him before and behind, he chose some of Israel’s best and put them in battle array against the Syrians. 10 And the rest of the people he put under the command of (M)Abishai his brother, that he might set them in battle array against the people of Ammon. 11 Then he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. 12 (N)Be of good courage, and let us (O)be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. And may (P)the Lord do what is good in His sight.”
13 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near for the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. 14 When the people of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fleeing, they also fled before Abishai, and entered the city. So Joab returned from the people of Ammon and went to (Q)Jerusalem.
15 When the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered together. 16 Then [b]Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond [c]the River, and they came to Helam. And [d]Shobach the commander of Hadadezer’s army went before them. 17 When it was told David, he gathered all Israel, crossed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in battle array against David and fought with him. 18 Then the Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven hundred charioteers and forty thousand (R)horsemen of the Syrians, and struck Shobach the commander of their army, who died there. 19 And when all the kings who were servants to [e]Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and (S)served them. So the Syrians were afraid to help the people of Ammon anymore.

10 It came about after this that the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son Hanun reigned in his place. 2 Then David thought, “Let me show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent word by the hand of his servants to comfort him concerning his father. But when David’s servants arrived at the land of the children of Ammon, 3 the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David is really honoring your father because he has sent consolers to you? Has not David sent his servants to you in order to explore the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?” 4 So Hanun seized David’s servants, shaved off one side of their beards, cut off their garments in the middle at their buttocks, and sent them away.
5 When they informed David, he sent word to meet them, for the men were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay in Jericho until your beards grow, then return.” 6 Now when the children of Ammon saw that they had become a stench to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Arameans of Beth-Rehob and the Arameans of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of Maacah with 1,000 men, plus 12,000 men from Tob.
7 When David heard about it, he sent Joab and the whole army—the mighty warriors. 8 The children of Ammon came out and lined up in battle array at the entrance of the gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the field. 9 When Joab saw that there was a battle line against him front and rear, he chose of all the best troops of Israel and arrayed them against the Arameans, 10 but the rest of the troops he committed to the command of his brother Abishai, and he arrayed them against the children of Ammon. 11 Then he said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you will help me, but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come to help you. 12 Chazak! And let us take courage for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God, and may Adonai do what is good in His eyes.”
13 So Joab and the troops with him advanced to battle against the Arameans—and they fled before him. 14 When the children of Ammon saw that the Arameans had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai and withdrew into the city. Then Joab returned from assaulting the children of Ammon, and went to Jerusalem.
15 When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they regrouped. 16 Hadadezer sent word and brought out the Arameans from across the River[a], and they came to Helam, with Hadadezer’s army commander Shobach before them. 17 When David was told, he gathered all Israel together, crossed the Jordan and went to Helam. The Arameans arrayed their lines against David and fought him. 18 But the Arameans fled before Israel—David killed 700 charioteers of the Arameans and 40,000 horsemen, and struck down Shobach the commander of their army, so he died there.
19 When the vassal kings of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became servants to them. Then the Arameans were afraid to help the children of Ammon anymore.

David Defeats the Ammonites(A)
10 In the course of time, the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun succeeded him as king. 2 David thought, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash,(B) just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father.
When David’s men came to the land of the Ammonites, 3 the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Hasn’t David sent them to you only to explore the city and spy it out(C) and overthrow it?” 4 So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved off half of each man’s beard,(D) cut off their garments at the buttocks,(E) and sent them away.
5 When David was told about this, he sent messengers to meet the men, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.”
6 When the Ammonites realized that they had become obnoxious(F) to David, they hired twenty thousand Aramean(G) foot soldiers from Beth Rehob(H) and Zobah,(I) as well as the king of Maakah(J) with a thousand men, and also twelve thousand men from Tob.(K)
7 On hearing this, David sent Joab(L) out with the entire army of fighting men. 8 The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance of their city gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maakah were by themselves in the open country.
9 Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans. 10 He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai(M) his brother and deployed them against the Ammonites. 11 Joab said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to come to my rescue; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to rescue you. 12 Be strong,(N) and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.”(O)
13 Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him. 14 When the Ammonites(P) realized that the Arameans were fleeing, they fled before Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab returned from fighting the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.
15 After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they regrouped. 16 Hadadezer had Arameans brought from beyond the Euphrates River; they went to Helam, with Shobak the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
17 When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan and went to Helam. The Arameans formed their battle lines to meet David and fought against him. 18 But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers.[a] He also struck down Shobak the commander of their army, and he died there. 19 When all the kings who were vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been routed by Israel, they made peace with the Israelites and became subject(Q) to them.
So the Arameans(R) were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore.
