So Hanun took David's servants and shaved off half the beard of each and cut off their garments in the middle, (A)at their hips, and sent them away. When it was told David, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown and then return.”

When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Syrians of (B)Beth-rehob, and (C)the Syrians of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of (D)Maacah with 1,000 men, and the men of (E)Tob, 12,000 men.

So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved off half of each man’s beard,(A) cut off their garments at the buttocks,(B) and sent them away.

When David was told about this, he sent messengers to meet the men, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.”

When the Ammonites realized that they had become obnoxious(C) to David, they hired twenty thousand Aramean(D) foot soldiers from Beth Rehob(E) and Zobah,(F) as well as the king of Maakah(G) with a thousand men, and also twelve thousand men from Tob.(H)
