1 ¶ Y aconteció después de la muerte de Saúl, cuando regresó David de la matanza de los amalecitas, que estuvo dos días en Siclag;
2 y al tercer día aconteció, que vino uno del campamento de Saúl, rotos sus vestidos, y tierra sobre su cabeza; y llegando a David, se postró en tierra, y adoró.
3 Y le preguntó David: ¿De dónde vienes? Y él respondió: Me he escapado del campamento de Israel.
4 Y David le dijo: ¿Qué ha acontecido? Te ruego que me lo digas. Y él respondió: El pueblo huyó de la batalla, y también muchos del pueblo cayeron y están muertos; también Saúl y Jonatán su hijo murieron.
5 Y dijo David a aquel joven que le daba las nuevas: ¿Cómo sabes que Saúl está muerto, y Jonatán su hijo?
6 Y el joven que le daba las nuevas respondió: Casualmente vine al monte de Gilboa, y hallé a Saúl que estaba recostado sobre su lanza, y venían tras él carros y gente de a caballo.
7 Y cuando él miró atrás, me vio y me llamó; y yo dije: Heme aquí.
8 Y él me dijo: ¿Quién eres tú? Y yo le respondí: Soy amalecita.
9 Y él me volvió a decir: Yo te ruego que te pongas sobre mí, y me mates, porque me toman angustias, y aún toda mi alma está en mí.
10 Yo entonces me puse sobre él, y lo maté, porque sabía que no podía vivir después de su caída; y tomé la diadema que tenía en su cabeza, y el brazalete que traía en su brazo, y se los he traído acá a mi señor.
11 ¶ Entonces David tirando de sus vestidos, los rompió; y lo mismo hicieron los hombres que estaban con él.
12 Y lloraron y lamentaron, y ayunaron hasta la tarde, por Saúl y por Jonatán su hijo, y por el pueblo del SEÑOR, y por la casa de Israel; porque habían caído a espada.
13 Y David dijo a aquel joven que le había traído las nuevas: ¿De dónde eres tú? Y él respondió: Yo soy hijo de un extranjero, amalecita.
14 Y le dijo David: ¿Cómo no tuviste temor de extender tu mano para matar al ungido del SEÑOR?
15 Entonces llamó David a uno de los jóvenes, y le dijo: Ve, y mátalo. Y él lo hirió, y murió.
16 Y David le dijo: Tu sangre sea sobre tu cabeza, pues que tu boca atestiguó contra ti, diciendo: Yo maté al ungido del SEÑOR.
17 ¶ Y endechó David a Saúl y a Jonatán su hijo con esta endecha.
18 (Dijo también que enseñaran el arco a los hijos de Judá. He aquí así está escrito en el libro de la rectitud):
19 ¡La gloria de Israel, muertos sobre tus collados! ¡Cómo han caído los valientes!
20 No lo denunciéis en Gat, no deis las nuevas en las plazas de Ascalón; para que no se alegren las hijas de los filisteos, para que no salten de gozo las hijas de los incircuncisos.
21 Montes de Gilboa, ni rocío ni lluvia caiga sobre vosotros, ni seáis tierras de ofrendas; porque allí fue desechado el escudo de los valientes, el escudo de Saúl, como si no hubiera sido ungido con aceite.
22 Sin sangre de los muertos, sin grosura de los valientes, la saeta de Jonatán nunca retrocedía, ni la espada de Saúl se tornó vacía.
23 Saúl y Jonatán, amados y deseados en su vida, en su muerte tampoco fueron apartados. Más ligeros que águilas, más fuertes que leones.
24 Hijas de Israel, llorad por Saúl, que os vestía de escarlata en sus placeres, que adornaba vuestras ropas con ornamentos de oro.
25 ¡Cómo han caído los valientes en medio de la batalla! ¡Jonatán, muerto en tus alturas!
26 Angustia tengo por ti, hermano mío Jonatán, muy dulce fuiste para conmigo; maravilloso fue tu amor hacia mí, que sobrepasó el amor de las mujeres.
27 ¡Cómo han caído los valientes, y perecieron las armas de guerra!

Davide apprende la morte di Saul
1 Dopo la morte di Saul, Davide tornò dalla strage degli Amaleciti e rimase in Ziklàg due giorni. 2 Al terzo giorno ecco arrivare un uomo dal campo di Saul con la veste stracciata e col capo cosparso di polvere. Appena giunto presso Davide, cadde a terra e si prostrò. 3 Davide gli chiese: «Da dove vieni?». Rispose: «Sono fuggito dal campo d'Israele». 4 Davide gli domandò: «Come sono andate le cose? Su, raccontami!». Rispose: «E' successo che il popolo è fuggito nel corso della battaglia, molti del popolo sono caduti e sono morti; anche Saul e suo figlio Giònata sono morti». 5 Davide chiese ancora al giovane che gli portava le notizie: «Come sai che sono morti Saul e suo figlio Giònata?». 6 Il giovane che recava la notizia rispose: «Ero venuto per caso sul monte Gelboe ed ecco vidi Saul appoggiato alla lancia e serrato tra carri e cavalieri. 7 Egli si volse indietro, mi vide e mi chiamò vicino. Dissi: Eccomi! 8 Mi chiese: Chi sei tu? Gli risposi: Sono un Amalecita. 9 Mi disse: Gettati contro di me e uccidimi: io sento le vertigini, ma la vita è ancora tutta in me. 10 Io gli fui sopra e lo uccisi, perché capivo che non sarebbe sopravvissuto alla sua caduta. Poi presi il diadema che era sul suo capo e la catenella che aveva al braccio e li ho portati qui al mio signore».
11 Davide afferrò le sue vesti e le stracciò; così fecero tutti gli uomini che erano con lui. 12 Essi alzarono gemiti e pianti e digiunarono fino a sera per Saul e Giònata suo figlio, per il popolo del Signore e per la casa d'Israele, perché erano caduti colpiti di spada. 13 Davide chiese poi al giovane che aveva portato la notizia: «Di dove sei tu?». Rispose: «Sono figlio di un forestiero amalecita». 14 Davide gli disse allora: «Come non hai provato timore nello stendere la mano per uccidere il consacrato del Signore?». 15 Davide chiamò uno dei suoi giovani e gli disse: «Accostati e ammazzalo». Egli lo colpì subito e quegli morì. 16 Davide gridò a lui: «Il tuo sangue ricada sul tuo capo. Attesta contro di te la tua bocca che ha detto: Io ho ucciso il consacrato del Signore!».
Elegia di Davide su Saul e Gionata
17 Allora Davide intonò questo lamento su Saul e suo figlio Giònata 18 e ordinò che fosse insegnato ai figli di Giuda. Ecco, si trova scritto nel Libro del Giusto:
19 «Il tuo vanto, Israele,
sulle tue alture giace trafitto!
Perché sono caduti gli eroi?
20 Non fatelo sapere in Gat,
non l'annunziate per le vie di Ascalon,
non ne faccian festa le figlie dei Filistei,
non ne esultino le figlie dei non circoncisi!
21 O monti di Gelboe, non più rugiada né pioggia su
di voi
né campi di primizie,
perché qui fu avvilito lo scudo degli eroi,
lo scudo di Saul, non unto di olio,
22 ma col sangue dei trafitti, col grasso degli eroi.
L'arco di Giònata non tornò mai indietro,
la spada di Saul non tornava mai a vuoto.
23 Saul e Giònata, amabili e gentili,
né in vita né in morte furon divisi;
erano più veloci delle aquile,
più forti dei leoni.
24 Figlie d'Israele, piangete su Saul,
che vi vestiva di porpora e di delizie,
che appendeva gioielli d'oro sulle vostre vesti.
25 Perché son caduti gli eroi
in mezzo alla battaglia?
Giònata, per la tua morte sento dolore,
26 l'angoscia mi stringe per te,
fratello mio Giònata!
Tu mi eri molto caro;
la tua amicizia era per me preziosa
più che amore di donna.
27 Perché son caduti gli eroi,
son periti quei fulmini di guerra?».

David Hears of Saul’s Death(A)
1 After the death(B) of Saul, David returned from striking down(C) the Amalekites(D) and stayed in Ziklag two days. 2 On the third day a man(E) arrived from Saul’s camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head.(F) When he came to David, he fell(G) to the ground to pay him honor.(H)
3 “Where have you come from?” David asked him.
He answered, “I have escaped from the Israelite camp.”
4 “What happened?” David asked. “Tell me.”
“The men fled from the battle,” he replied. “Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.”
5 Then David said to the young man who brought him the report, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”
6 “I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,(I)” the young man said, “and there was Saul, leaning on his spear, with the chariots and their drivers in hot pursuit. 7 When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, and I said, ‘What can I do?’
8 “He asked me, ‘Who are you?’
“‘An Amalekite,(J)’ I answered.
9 “Then he said to me, ‘Stand here by me and kill me!(K) I’m in the throes of death, but I’m still alive.’
10 “So I stood beside him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not survive. And I took the crown(L) that was on his head and the band on his arm and have brought them here to my lord.”
11 Then David and all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore(M) them. 12 They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of the Lord and for the nation of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
13 David said to the young man who brought him the report, “Where are you from?”
“I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite,(N)” he answered.
14 David asked him, “Why weren’t you afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?(O)”
15 Then David called one of his men and said, “Go, strike him down!”(P) So he struck him down, and he died.(Q) 16 For David had said to him, “Your blood be on your own head.(R) Your own mouth testified against you when you said, ‘I killed the Lord’s anointed.’”
David’s Lament for Saul and Jonathan
17 David took up this lament(S) concerning Saul and his son Jonathan,(T) 18 and he ordered that the people of Judah be taught this lament of the bow (it is written in the Book of Jashar):(U)
20 “Tell it not in Gath,(X)
proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,(Y)
lest the daughters of the Philistines(Z) be glad,
lest the daughters of the uncircumcised rejoice.(AA)
21 “Mountains of Gilboa,(AB)
may you have neither dew(AC) nor rain,(AD)
may no showers fall on your terraced fields.[b](AE)
For there the shield of the mighty was despised,
the shield of Saul—no longer rubbed with oil.(AF)
22 “From the blood(AG) of the slain,
from the flesh of the mighty,
the bow(AH) of Jonathan did not turn back,
the sword of Saul did not return unsatisfied.
23 Saul and Jonathan—
in life they were loved and admired,
and in death they were not parted.
They were swifter than eagles,(AI)
they were stronger than lions.(AJ)
24 “Daughters of Israel,
weep for Saul,
who clothed you in scarlet and finery,
who adorned your garments with ornaments of gold.(AK)
25 “How the mighty have fallen in battle!
Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
26 I grieve(AL) for you, Jonathan(AM) my brother;(AN)
you were very dear to me.
Your love for me was wonderful,(AO)
more wonderful than that of women.
27 “How the mighty have fallen!
The weapons of war have perished!”(AP)
