1 Après la mort de Saül, David, qui avait battu les Amalécites, était depuis deux jours revenu à Tsiklag.
2 Le troisième jour, un homme arriva du camp de Saül, les vêtements déchirés et la tête couverte de terre. Lorsqu'il fut en présence de David, il se jeta par terre et se prosterna.
3 David lui dit: D'où viens-tu? Et il lui répondit: Je me suis sauvé du camp d'Israël.
4 David lui dit: Que s'est-il passé? dis-moi donc! Et il répondit: Le peuple s'est enfui du champ de bataille, et un grand nombre d'hommes sont tombés et ont péri; Saül même et Jonathan, son fils, sont morts.
5 David dit au jeune homme qui lui apportait ces nouvelles: Comment sais-tu que Saül et Jonathan, son fils, sont morts?
6 Et le jeune homme qui lui apportait ces nouvelles répondit: Je me trouvais sur la montagne de Guilboa; et voici, Saül s'appuyait sur sa lance, et voici, les chars et les cavaliers étaient près de l'atteindre.
7 S'étant retourné, il m'aperçut et m'appela. Je dis: Me voici!
8 Et il me dit: Qui es-tu? Je lui répondis: Je suis Amalécite.
9 Et il dit: Approche donc, et donne-moi la mort; car je suis pris de vertige, quoique encore plein de vie.
10 Je m'approchai de lui, et je lui donnai la mort, sachant bien qu'il ne survivrait pas à sa défaite. J'ai enlevé le diadème qui était sur sa tête et le bracelet qu'il avait au bras, et je les apporte ici à mon seigneur.
11 David saisit ses vêtements et les déchira, et tous les hommes qui étaient auprès de lui firent de même.
12 Ils furent dans le deuil, pleurèrent et jeûnèrent jusqu'au soir, à cause de Saül, de Jonathan, son fils, du peuple de l'Éternel, et de la maison d'Israël, parce qu'ils étaient tombés par l'épée.
13 David dit au jeune homme qui lui avait apporté ces nouvelles: D'où es-tu? Et il répondit: Je suis le fils d'un étranger, d'un Amalécite.
14 David lui dit: Comment n'as-tu pas craint de porter la main sur l'oint de l'Éternel et de lui donner la mort?
15 Et David appela l'un de ses gens, et dit: Approche, et tue-le! Cet homme frappa l'Amalécite, qui mourut.
16 Et David lui dit: Que ton sang retombe sur ta tête, car ta bouche a déposé contre toi, puisque tu as dit: J'ai donné la mort à l'oint de l'Éternel!
17 Voici le cantique funèbre que David composa sur Saül et sur Jonathan, son fils,
18 et qu'il ordonna d'enseigner aux enfants de Juda. C'est le cantique de l'arc: il est écrit dans le livre du Juste.
19 L'élite d'Israël a succombé sur tes collines! Comment des héros sont-ils tombés?
20 Ne l'annoncez point dans Gath, N'en publiez point la nouvelle dans les rues d'Askalon, De peur que les filles des Philistins ne se réjouissent, De peur que les filles des incirconcis ne triomphent.
21 Montagnes de Guilboa! Qu'il n'y ait sur vous ni rosée ni pluie, Ni champs qui donnent des prémices pour les offrandes! Car là ont été jetés les boucliers des héros, Le bouclier de Saül; L'huile a cessé de les oindre.
22 Devant le sang des blessés, devant la graisse des plus vaillants, L'arc de Jonathan n'a jamais reculé, Et l'épée de Saül ne retournait point à vide.
23 Saül et Jonathan, aimables et chéris pendant leur vie, N'ont point été séparés dans leur mort; Ils étaient plus légers que les aigles, Ils étaient plus forts que les lions.
24 Filles d'Israël! pleurez sur Saül, Qui vous revêtait magnifiquement de cramoisi, Qui mettait des ornements d'or sur vos habits.
25 Comment des héros sont-ils tombés au milieu du combat? Comment Jonathan a-t-il succombé sur tes collines?
26 Je suis dans la douleur à cause de toi, Jonathan, mon frère! Tu faisais tout mon plaisir; Ton amour pour moi était admirable, Au-dessus de l'amour des femmes.

David Hears of Saul's Death
1 After the death of Saul, when David had returned (A)from striking down the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag. 2 And on the third day, behold, (B)a man came from Saul's camp, (C)with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And when he came to David, (D)he fell to the ground and paid homage. 3 David said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.” 4 And David said to him, (E)“How did it go? Tell me.” And he answered, “The people fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead, and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead.” 5 Then David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?” 6 And the young man who told him said, (F)“By chance I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear, and behold, the chariots and the horsemen were close upon him. 7 And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’ 8 And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’ 9 And he said to me, (G)‘Stand beside me and kill me, for anguish has seized me, and yet my life still lingers.’ 10 So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. (H)And I took the crown that was on his head and the armlet that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”
11 Then David took hold of his clothes and (I)tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. 12 And they mourned and wept (J)and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. 13 And David said to the young man who told him, “Where do you come from?” And he answered, “I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite.” 14 David said to him, “How is it you were not (K)afraid to put out your hand to destroy (L)the Lord's anointed?” 15 Then (M)David called one of the young men and said, “Go, execute him.” And he struck him down so that he died. 16 And David said to him, (N)“Your blood be on your head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed (O)the Lord's anointed.’”
David's Lament for Saul and Jonathan
17 And David (P)lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son, 18 and he said it[a] should be taught to the people of Judah; behold, it is written in (Q)the Book of Jashar.[b] He said:
19 “Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places!
(R)How the mighty have fallen!
20 (S)Tell it not in Gath,
(T)publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon,
(U)lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,
lest the daughters of (V)the uncircumcised exult.
21 (W)“You mountains of Gilboa,
let there be no dew or rain upon you,
nor fields of offerings![c]
For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,
the shield of Saul, not (X)anointed with oil.
22 “From the blood of the slain,
from the fat of the mighty,
(Y)the bow of Jonathan turned not back,
and the sword of Saul returned not empty.
23 “Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely!
In life and in death they were not divided;
they were (Z)swifter than eagles;
they were (AA)stronger than lions.
24 “You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet,
(AB)who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.
25 (AC)“How the mighty have fallen
in the midst of the battle!
“Jonathan lies slain on your high places.
26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
very pleasant have you been to me;
(AD)your love to me was extraordinary,
surpassing the love of women.
27 (AE)“How the mighty have fallen,
and the weapons of war perished!”

5 – De unde ştii că Saul şi fiul său Ionatan au murit? l-a mai întrebat David pe tânărul care i-a adus veştile.
6 – S-a întâmplat să mă aflu pe muntele Ghilboa, a răspuns tânărul, unde l-am văzut pe Saul, sprijinit pe suliţa sa, iar carele şi călăreţii îl ajungeau din urmă. 7 Când Saul s-a uitat în urmă şi m-a văzut, m-a chemat, iar eu i-am răspuns:
– Iată-mă!
8 – Cine eşti? m-a întrebat el.
– Sunt amalekit, i-am răspuns eu.
9 Atunci el mi-a zis:
– Apropie-te de mine şi ucide-mă pentru că sunt în agonia morţii, cu toate că sunt încă în viaţă.
10 Aşadar, m-am apropiat de el şi l-am ucis deoarece ştiam că, odată rănit, nu va mai trăi. I-am luat apoi coroana de pe cap şi brăţara de la braţ şi le-am adus aici, stăpânului meu.
11 Atunci David şi-a apucat hainele şi le-a sfâşiat, iar toţi bărbaţii care erau cu el au făcut acelaşi lucru. 12 Au bocit, au plâns şi au postit până seara pentru Saul, pentru fiul său Ionatan, pentru oştirea Domnului şi pentru Casa lui Israel, căci au murit de sabie. 13 Apoi David l-a întrebat pe tânărul care i-a adus veştile:
– De unde eşti?
– Sunt fiul unui străin, un amalekit, i-a răspuns el.
14 Atunci David i-a zis:
– Cum de nu ţi-a fost frică să-ţi ridici mâna şi să ucizi pe unsul Domnului?
15 Apoi David l-a chemat pe unul dintre oamenii lui şi i-a zis:
– Apropie-te şi doboară-l!
El l-a lovit şi acesta a murit. 16 David i-a zis:
– Sângele tău să cadă asupra capului tău, căci gura ta a mărturisit împotriva ta când ai zis: „L-am ucis pe unsul Domnului.“
Cântarea de jale a lui David
17 David a cântat această cântare de jale despre Saul şi despre fiul acestuia Ionatan 18 şi a poruncit ca cei din Iuda să înveţe această Cântare a Arcului (ea se află scrisă în Cartea lui Iaşar[a]):
19 Gloria ta, Israele, zace ucisă pe înălţimile tale.
Cum au căzut vitejii!
20 Nu faceţi cunoscut acest lucru în Gat
şi nu-l vestiţi pe străzile Aşchelonului,
ca nu cumva să se bucure fiicele filistenilor
şi să tresalte de bucurie fiicele celor necircumcişi.
21 O, munţi ai Ghilboei!
Nici roua şi nici ploaia să nu mai cadă peste voi!
Nici câmpii să nu mai aveţi care să dea roade pentru darurile de mâncare![b]
Căci acolo au fost pângărite scuturile vitejilor,
scutul lui Saul care nu va mai fi uns cu untdelemn.
22 De la sângele celor ucişi,
de la grăsimea vitejilor,
săgeata[c] lui Ionatan nu venea înapoi,
iar sabia lui Saul nu se învârtea în gol.
23 Saul şi Ionatan,
care în viaţă s-au iubit şi s-au plăcut,
nici măcar în moarte n-au fost despărţiţi.
Erau mai iuţi decât vulturii
şi mai puternici decât leii.
24 Voi, fiice ale lui Israel, plângeţi-l pe Saul!
Pe cel care vă îmbrăca în stacojiu şi cu mult fast,
pe cel care vă împodobea veşmintele cu ornamente de aur.
25 Cum au căzut vitejii în mijlocul luptei!
Ionatan zace ucis pe înălţimile tale.
26 Sunt mâhnit din pricina ta, frate Ionatane!
Mi-ai fost atât de drag!
Dragostea ta pentru mine a fost minunată,
mai minunată chiar decât dragostea femeilor.
27 Cum au căzut vitejii
şi cum au pierit armele!
